#1 New York Times bestselling author Rachel Van Dyken delivers a laugh-out-loud romantic comedy with this hilarious, standalone new adult romance.

Have you ever hated someone so much that you actually wondered if prison would be worth it?
I have.
And I had to bear witness to Mark's cocky smile for four miserable years watching girl after girl tumble in and out of his bed while he had nothing but scorn for me.
After we graduated college and, thank God, finally parted ways, I thought that I was done having to deal with the enemy. And then I got fired, sending me careening right into a local bar—and Mark's bed.

My nightmare came true as we both soon realized that we would be fighting for the same job at Emory Enterprises.
We had to live together under the same roof, and as the challenges got weirder and weirder, we got closer and closer—united by the trauma that is CEO Max Emory.
When I signed up for this internship, I envisioned coffee runs, not gecko sitting—long story.
Soon one thing led to another, and somehow my enemy quickly turned into my best friend.

But what happens when the games are over? Furthermore, how do I tell the guy I used to hate that he owns my heart when I wasn't even aware I'd given it away?

Prison time or Mark?
A few days ago, I would have chosen prison.
Now? He's all I see.

If you want a light book, with lot of laugh, this one is for you.
Sometimes we just need to take things light and laugh out loud.
description
I've loved Max Emory, he's completely insane, and the pets he have...
But he's also so sweet and a really matchmaker.
Olivia hated Mark through all the college years, Mark... Not so much, but when one says no...
description
So when both apply to the same job at Emory's corporation, is every "man" to itself.
description
Oh, I forgot to mention they have a hell of a chemistry and when they lost their jobs they had drunken sex, to be more accurate, morning sex after a night drunk, and they had the best sex ever...
So we have here a lot of mix up feelings covered with hate for each other.
description
Max Emory have a funny way to select his employees and even more strange standards.
This is sort of hunger games but with laugh instead of the hunger.
𝓢𝓸...
description
They have to face their fears, will they do it alone or they'll fall in love with each other?
Mark is such a sweet guy...
And of course, we have Max's pets!
Little G and Dante. Not the ordinary pets.

The one word that basically sums up this book: chaotic 🤡

Sorry, I just wasn't a huge fan of this one. And judging by the high praise and positive reviews, it looks like a classic case of 'It's not the book, it's me'. I'm normally a big fan of RVD's style of humour but for some reason, this one missed its mark.

I didn't really understand the chemistry between the main characters. Their love/hate relationship just seemed sort of bizarre. Their first sex scene was weird to say the least.

Overall, if you're looking for an OTT rom-com, this might be worth looking into?

ANYWAYS~

Office Hate is a standalone RomCom just shy of 160 pages. It is mainly told from a dual perspective — Mark and Olivia. It also includes two confessionals told from Max Emory POV. I wanted to like this book but bottom line this book was not for me.

STORY PLOT

🐍 Olivia = main heroine, competitive, afraid of heights
🐍 Mark = main hero, afraid of snakes, cocky, attention span of a gnat when Olivia is near him

Olivia and Mark have hated each other since freshman year of college. That hate fueled competition between them to outdo each other with grades and landing jobs. Unfortunately, they are stuck in a dead end job that coincidentally are across from each other. Convenient, am I right? Anyways, they are both fired the same day and to wallow in their sorrows end up at the same bar where they get drunk, and eventually hook up. They ceased their ‘hate’ for the time being until an email that states to report to Emory Enterprises comes through to both of them. This employment process is peculiar as they are competing in the “Emory Games” in order to get the internship. The games begin but they end up falling for each other through the process, then they are separated for 5 years to only come back together when Mark becomes Olivia’s boss.

Thank you for attending my Ted Talk about Office Hate, here are the talking points for today
— OTT plot line
— The relationship
— Tacky pop culture references
— Constant jabs at millennials
— Typos. Typos. Typos

Let’s tackle all of my issues one by one, shall we?

ISSUE #1: OTT PLOT LINES

— Challenge as interns:
(1) Olivia and Mark had to watch a gecko for 24 hrs which they swear winks at them and only calms down to the humming of Star Wars

(2) Spartan race, enough said

(3) Being filmed for a reality show without their knowledge and challenges is Max’s just being eccentric... seeing if they’ll fit with the company. HR complaints? Lawsuit in the making?

(4) Mark tells Olivia his fear of snakes and • 5 minutes later • a snake meat for dinner is delivered

The whole ‘Emory Games’ was OTT and really unrealistic.

ISSUE #2: THE RELATIONSHIP

Theme Song How Bizarre

Initial Meeting: Mark accidentally breaking Olivia’s nose. He didn’t apologize or help her, just walked by like nothing happened. Her hate? ✦ understandable ✦
College Years: Competitive | they were in the same major + minor. Plus Olivia made it known she hated him ✦ still understandable // normal ✦

Where it became bizarre

⊰1⊱ They go back to his apartment to hook up and she falls asleep while giving a BJ but this is still one of the best experiences for Mark.

⊰2⊱ Mark claimed he always wanted her since the moment he saw her freshman year.

Ok. Ok. Ok. Mark, my man, was this before, during or after you hit her nose and didn’t care to check if she was alright?

⊰3⊱ After a 5 year separation and murky clarification if they were with anyone else, they profess that they love each other

⊰4⊱ Within a few hours of seeing each other again, they move into the apartment they lived in together as interns and are engaged

description

ISSUE #3: OVERSATURATED WITH POP CULTURE REFERENCES

Some people may say it is ‘witty’ or not a big deal because it is a RomCom but for me there were too many pop culture references that it just made the book sorta tacky. I get what RVD was trying to do with humoring us readers with the references. Yet, the inclusion of pop culture in 90% of the dialogue was not necessary.

- EXAMPLES -
scrambled away like Smeagol on Lord of the Rings

“Son of a bitch!” he roared, coming to life like I’d given him a hit of adrenaline directly down the middle of his chest, Pulp Fiction style. “I’m aliiiiiive.”

ISSUE #4: EDITING WAS NEEDED - TYPOS. TYPOS. TYPOS

RVD, what happened with editing? Usually, I am not one to get annoyed with typos in a book, it happens… but there were several typos with misspelling of words and dialogue that was written in the wrong person’s POV.

Example - Dialogue between Mark and Olivia that is told from Mark’s POV

“Are we crazy?” I said between hasty kisses and heavy pants.

An adorable moan escaped between her teeth as she tilted her head, taking my kiss in deeper and deeper; a man could die this way with a giant smile on his face and an explosion of stars in his eyes.

“Yes,” I finally said, my voice cracked with emotion

Good to know Mark answered himself for such a vulnerable question.

ISSUE #4: JABS AT MILLENNIALS

Max Emory is considered a millennial being in his 30’s. He has a conversation with Mark and Olivia about Snapchat and TikTok. He was portrayed as unknowing/too old for these platforms I found it annoying that she stereotyped the character with the “you-are-not-supposed-to-used-these-social-media-platforms-if-you-are-an-older-millennial.”

FINAL VERDICT ON BOOK

Generally, I would not recommend this book, but this may be for you if you enjoyed The Consequence of Revenge (which is Max’s story) or like OTT RomCom stories.

Clearly I’ve been sleeping on the hilarious side of Rachel Van Dyken. My RVD experience has always been in the broody, steamy, bloody mafia world, so it was fun to see her stretch some muscles I personally hadn’t experienced before. At this point, what can’t she do?

This is fast paced, quirky, at times ridiculous and often hilarious and always fun enemies to lovers office romance read. While I personally haven’t met them, fans also seem to be excited to revisit some characters from the Consequences series, too- including our eccentric boss Max and all his scene stealing antics. Olivia and Mark are competing interns with that sizzling love-hate connection. Consistently stuck together as they embark on the infamous “Emory Games” they are finally forced to confront their sizzling connection and the blurry line between love and hate.

Whether she’s writing bloody mafia or quirky humor, RVD always seems to excel at character connection. Here we get the right balance of witty banter, sizzling chemistry, and hot steam between Max and Olivia. All in all, loads of fun.

Oh how I have missed RVD’s rom-coms!! and Max Emory! OMG that man is so ridiculous and so outrageous he had me rolling my eyes one minute and snorting in laughter the next and I absolutely loved it.

Olivia and Mark are up for an internship at Emory Enterprises. These two have been rivals since their freshman year in college but deep down the sexual tension just radiates off of them. But with a new job on the line neither can afford to give into their attraction until they are forced into living together and some crazy situations that make it impossible not to give in.

This was such an entertaining read. It is a quick read that I had a hard time putting down. I loved the competitiveness, flirtiness and ridiculous antics! If you love a good enemies to lovers story and need something that will make smile and laugh pick this one up! You will not be disappointed.

I love RVD. She does Rom-Com like no one else. This started so good in her usual dry humor style. I laughed, and I loved visiting with Maxx for the Consequence series, but the MCs just never took off for me. They realize it was more love than hate through a series of odd adventures to land a job, but then they don’t fight for each other. They walk away for a FIVE YEAR separation at 90%? Why? So they can mature, which is told by progressing through their jobs and dating other people. Then they see each other again and profess their love within five minutes and that is the HEA? << The book was just okay until the end, which KILLED the romance. Ehh, very disappointed to give my favorite Rom Com author one star.

Office Hate is perfect for a quick, fun escape read! Olivia and Mark will delight readers with their crazy antics and sizzling chemistry.

Olivia and Mark are competing for the same job at Emory Enterprise (Max's company from the Consequence series). These 2 competed through college as well and Olivia thought she was done with Mark. As with all enemies to lovers stories, there is scorching sexual tension. If you read the Consequence series (not necessary, but it is seriously so good), you know to expect some crazy hijinks and Office Hate delivers. It is seriously over the top, but that is what makes it so fun.

Office Hate will have you laughing out loud with its hilarious characters and swooning with the enemies to lovers romance. Overall, Office Hate is a super quick read, so if you have time, it's perfect for a Saturday binge! Bonus: It is in Kindle Unlimited so you can read for free if you're a member.

Office Hate is a stand-alone novel written by Rachel Van Dyken. Max from The Consequence of Revenge has a nice guest spot so if you are a fan of his you have a good reason to read this book.

I have so many conflicting emotions to the point where I don't know how to begin writing this review.

You see, I was actually liking the plot despite the fact that is over the top. Maybe I liked it because of that. I honestly cannot tell. What matters is that for quite some time I considered this book to be a good one. Then the separation came and I was completely thrown off. I wasn't expecting it to last as long as it did for one. Then, Mark and Olivia just got their reunion, kissed and boom we got the "happy ending". It was a big "Blink and you miss it" moment. Hours later and I still cannot get over it. It was very rushed. I understand why the characters needed some time apart, but not that much time.

The second thing that is probably the main reason I am giving this rating to the book is that it was implied that Olivia was celibate and Mark wasn't during their separation. She just was going out on blind dates while he was dating many women, one of which was a supermodel. That does not scream dedication and it made their reunion even less convincing. I felt like these two needed a little bit more time to get to know each other again before they jumped into the "I love you" wagon.

Max Emory is back, so hold onto your hats!!!

Olivia and Mark know each other from college and have this rivalry going on since Freshman year.
They can barely stand one one another and now they are interns at Max Emory's company vying for the same job.

Max has a very , shall we say, interesting way of testing out his interns. He calls it the "Emory Games. Will either one of them survive it?

Along the way, of being in such close proximity, of course feelings start to develop. There will be a choice....the job or the relationship?

This book is hilarious, sexy and makes you smile while reading it.

Thank you to Rachel Van Dyken for the advanced copy.

This book was hilarious, I couldn’t put it down! I enjoyed the banter in this enemies to lovers romance. All the characters were wonderful from Olivia to Mark, Little G and even ME... not me but I do mean the eccentric billionaire boss Max Emory—I can’t even imagine him as my boss! I couldn’t get enough of the Emory Games... so clever! Office Hate by Rachel Van Dyken is an EPIC read that will join the ranks of the BIBLIO-ARISTOCRACY!!!

But how do you stop hating someone from afar when the only thing you want is to love her up close?

Office Hate was a ton of fun, had the most irresistible banter and was beyond addicting! Plus, it was one of the funniest books I have ever read! RVD is the queen of writing stories that are heartwarming, sexy and hilarious. So if you’re a fan of that, then you definitely need this book in your life!
“Bad boys always taste better, Olivia, thought every girl knew that,” I teased as I laid her in my bed and pulled up the covers.

A year after college graduation, Olivia and Mark worked across the street from one another. In college, they were each other's nemesis. But now they found themselves jobless and pitted against one another for an internship they both desperately wanted at Emory Enterprise. What they didn’t realize was that the owner of Emory Enterprise, Max, was eccentric to say the least. What unfolded felt like an office style hunger games that had me laughing hysterically!
He was the devil.
And damn, did I want to sin.
Heaven was overrated, right?

Olivia cracked me up and painted the perfect picture of her past with Mark Huxley. He came across as a total douche and jerk. And while Olivia was a little intense and could also be cold, I loved the fire in her and how hard she worked. But we also got to spend chapters with Mark, and I was obsessed. Mark was beyond sexy and could be thoughtful and caring. When he wanted to lol. Anytime Olive and Mark were together, they were like fire and gasoline fire!
Hating him more than I had ever thought possible.
For being the man I’d always compare every other man to.
For being cruel when I needed him to be the bigger person.
And for agreeing to draw that line back in the sand when all I wanted was for him to say no, and keep me in his arms just a bit longer.

Oliva and Mark played a dangerous game. They both hurt each other. They both weren’t innocent. And they both messed with one another in the most epic of ways! But underneath it all was a ridiculous amount of sexual attraction and lust. It was addictive how much they toyed with the other….while also wanting to rip each other’s clothes off.
I leaned down and pressed a heated kiss to her neck, then sucked her skin near her ear. “Still needs practice…though I weirdly only want to do it with my enemy.”
“Good…because…” She lifted her hips. “…I would hate to see how you treat your friends.”

With this internship, they had to learn to work together as a team. So they wouldn’t fail. So they could get their dream job. But they were both nervous, how can you truly trust someone that you’re scared is going to screw you over?! Their internship “tests” involved an iguana, race, food, the rooms LOL and the whole time their traitorous bodies wanted the other. And when they did give in time and again *fans face*, it was HOT! But hold on because there was a lot that unfolded, and I was obsessed with every way the events played out! Office Hate was laugh out loud hilarious, over the top fun and such a huge win!
“I’m very proud of you guys. You finished the race even though you had no reason to.”
“Proud?” I repeated. “But Max, we lost?”
“Some of the best things in life are gained…by losing.”

PS The "confessionals"?! OMG I didn't realize how much I needed those chapters! All I can say is good luck not having an open mouth or laughing at the craziness of it all ha!

There's not a single genre that Rachel cannot make me love or devour with such ease.

If you're looking for a romantic comedy that can be binged in one sitting. Has a visit from the lovable, annoying Max Emory from the Consequences Series, then this my friends is the book for you!

Mind you it can be read without knowledge of Max Emory but be warned you may want to see more of his antics later so be sure to grab Consequences Series after.

Now Olivia and Mark have been hating each other since college, it's been in this nature to compete against one another. They're both very alike in their way to life and so of course they hate each other.

When they both end up at the same internship fighting for the same role at a company the notoriously eccentric Max Emory owns, it only adds to the drama of them maybe rolling in the sheets together a few drunk nights ago.

It can't be too bad right? Wrong!

Max is involved and well no one can understand his mind however this internship is unlike no other.

Challenges are thrown Olivia and Mark's way as they're forced into close proximity in order to survive they must work together. But being so close means hatred and love blurs as they realise they both love for the same thing and was there really any hate between them at the start.

This story was sooo much fun! So many laughs. There's a few games and challenges that someone's end with a mystery romp but overall there is magic to Max's madness which is revealed at the end. And once again, I love to hate him him because as crazy as he can be, he's lovable and an evil genius.

Grab Office Hate NOW if you need a light, funny read to help you escape the world!

I voluntarily received an early copy for an honest review.

This was the weirdest most fun book I've read in a while! If you've read RVD's Consequences series, you'll be familiar with Max Emory. (I've unfortunately only read the first and fourth books in that series so far, so have missed out on Max's personal book, but have met him in one of the ones I did read). Even if you haven't, this book will still make complete sense, you just won't have experienced Max's quirks before.

But, this story isn't about Max. He's just a huge background, secondary character in this. Olivia and Mark are our two main characters, and these two have hated each other for quite some time. But, there's a thin line between love and hate, right?

This story was so much fun to read. At times, I was like what on earth is going on? What has Max got them doing? Because the kicker - these two are fighting for the same job, working for Max's company. And through his internship tests, so many weird and wonderful things happen.

I don't want to spoil anything, so lets just say you need to grab this one right now, and be ready for all the gloriously fun and crazy times ahead! I also hope that this is the start of a new series maybe, there's definitely room for this continue, which I would love. Please Rachel?

Highly recommend, and can't wait for more RVD goodness in the future.

That. Was. MAGNIFICENT!!!
Just.... I don’t even know how to put into words how much I loved it! I read this as soon as it came onto my Kindle and didn’t put it down until there were no more words left!

Max puts his interns through hell for the opportunity to win their dream job with Emory Enterprise. Or what he’s calling it.... The Emory Games! Mark and Olivia have been enemies all through school as they tried to be the best. Now they’re fighting for that dream job.... only, as the games go on, and the two grow closer - it’s hard to tell where that office hate line is drawn.
I collapsed back against the ground. “What the hell is this?” Mark crawled over to me. “Actual Hell and Max is Satan.”

These two are so hilarious! The banter. The heat. The need to be the best and to try and not let the other distract them from their goal!
Get it together, Olivia! One orgasm, and you’re ready to take a nap on his shoulder? No. Be cold. Ruthless. Be you!

Let’s not even get started on the games Max puts these two through. He’s always got his advice to give and more sneak attacks right around the corner! I mean... this IS Max Emory! So get ready for the full effect that is Max! Lots of laughter, lots of surprises, lots of banter and lots of heat! And get ready for the next poor soul that catches Max’s eye! 😉

You’re going to LOVE this story! And you’re going to love Mark and Olivia! 🖤

Max is back! You know I really missed Max. But then I remember how crazy he is and remember why I can only take him in small doses. He is completely crazy and an evil genius. This story is completely wack and if I had a boss like him I am not sure if I would survive. Then again life would more more interesting. Mark and Olivia are the perfect couple. The hate and the love goes together seamlessly and we all kind of want a relationship just like it. They have chemistry and passion for both the good and the bad. There were many times that I felt the need to punch both of them and tell them to wake up and stop being stupid. Olivia is smart, driven, and hardworking. She isn't looking for a guy to fix her life she will do that herself. Mark is pretty unexpected. Some of the things he says will make you love him and you are surprised he said them. Definitely recommend this book. I do think that reading the Consequences Series will make it SO MUCH better but you definitely don't need to in order to read this book.

Rachel Van Dyken has done it again and created another laugh-out-loud romantic comedy! If you’ve read the Consequence series, you will love that Max Emory is back with his scheming and crazy ideas! (If you haven’t, you are missing out on some hilarious and swoon-worthy reading, my friend!) Max Emory is absolutely one of my favorite characters and he doesn’t disappoint in this great book that features his latest ‘victims’, Mark and Olivia. These two have had chemistry for as long as they’ve known each other but their competition with each other has sadly increased their hate…or so they think. Now as interns at Max’s company, they have to fight to win their coveted dream job but it’s a fight neither ever imagined they’d do. I mean, babysitting a gecko?? What?!There are many fun and steamy times that you won’t want to miss. Loved this book!

Soo... Time for another surprise, as I know this author from completely different ones - mafia, bloody, full of family dynamics. Yet here Ms. Van Dyken showed her other face, and you know what - it worked
In this somehow sad time we need laugh-out-loud books, so if you need one - grab Office Hate! From the very beginning, we have a relationship made of hate. And we know what sometimes this hate can blow into something else - hate is sometimes a great relationship indicator, you know what I mean right? And it will have a witty side, that I fell for! Oliva and Mark were great in their relationship that was evolving so much! Loved it!
I can't forget about Max - my gosh, this man was so eccentric and hilarious in it, he will be 'victimizing' our characters and bring out their inner self in quite a game of his own!

What in the world did I just read?

Not a rom-com of the RVD kind that I've read before.

In fact I didn't find anything romantic or comedic about it at all.

Every one and everything about it was immature and annoying.

Neither Mark nor Olivia were particularly likable, they just came across as childish and entitled, and certainly didn't deserve any of the opportunities they were afforded.

And WTF is with Max? I loved him in his own HEA book, but when recently relistening to another of the Consequences books he annoyed me. And in this he was completely unlikable and a lawsuit or 12 in the making. This has completely taken any like I had for Max at all away and now I pretty much hate him.

Something I did like about the book -Little G (a gecko)

This one really was a big miss for me - sorry RVD

Okay, I was kindly provided the ARC for Office Hate! I truly adore this story about Max Emory’s interns, Olivia and Mark! It’s witty, cutest banters, and Max Emory’s silly shenanigans with these 2, watch out! If you are a fan of Max Emory, in this book - he is a little older, more successful, CEO of his company, in fact and he will pop out every now and then in the story for you. Soon enough, you will get to know more about his interns & his version of hunger games to get the job spot are totally hilarious!!! Let’s not forget his pet, Little G! The story plot flows well, the characters were fantastic, plenty of sizzle factor, and a whole lot of fun times! If you want something light and full of giggles, this is the book for you!!!

Office Hate is a quick, amazingly fun read. It was just what I needed!

With a job competition unlike any other, Mark and Olivia’s hate for each other gears up! However their hate is continually clouded by their sizzling attraction.

The witty banter, the eccentric boss, and the crazy antics are so damn funny, I found myself laughing, giggling, and smiling big throughout.

A must read, steamy and highly entertaining feel good story!

Fantastic! Max Emory may not be the main character here but he still shines through. The return of Little-G was nothing short of spectacular.
Olivia and Mark are competitive and that may be putting it lightly. Sparks fly immediately when they are near each other. The quick ignite of their chemistry paired with hilarious antics brought on by the one and only Max Emory, will set a course for either complete destruction or a forever after.

I’m not entirely sure what I just read! I loved the enemies to lovers storyline, the insane attraction and chemistry, the can’t keep my hands off you energy, the fighting for the same position competition vibe. It was all so so fun and steamy!

But the whole hunger games internship was so bizarre, at times funny yes but I just found it and Max so weird omg.

Mark and Olivia were great though! And I did really like their romance story. But I think their ending was a bit rushed to be honest. After spending some time apart and in different parts of the country, they see each other again and it’s all forgotten like it never even happened. I don’t know I wish there had been a little more groveling and catching up with each other in the end.

But anyway, Office Hate is a fast, super entertaining and sexy read! If you like enemies to lovers, office type romances with lots of steam and funny moments, this is a book for you!

"But how do you stop hating someone from afar when the only thing you want is to love her up close?"

GAHHHHH Rachel just slays me sometimes. You're just reading along, minding your own business, and then she jumps out of nowhere with a line that punches you right in the f'king feels. Every time I read one of her books she does this to me.

This is funny, flirty, and very very sexy. I've never wanted to hate/love someone so much in my life. They do say it's a thin line between love and hate, and Rachel truly displayed that saying in Office Hate.

I've been a very bad fan, I haven't read the Consequences series yet. I KNOW! I get it. Bad Heather!! I'm going to rectify that very soon.

"Hope I didn't crack something that couldn't be fixed with Flex Seal."

I don't know where she comes up with this stuff sometimes. I was not expecting that line anywhere near any romance genre book. I was legit LOL so hard I was crying. Bravo to Rachel for doing what most can't - make me laugh.
