Elizabeth Bennet made it quite clear that Mr. Darcy was the last man in the world she would marry. But when her father dies, only marriage could keep her from destitution. When Darcy offered for her hand a second time, Elizabeth felt duty-bound to accept. Yet, never did she dream that their alliance would soon flame into something far more passionate.
Fitzwilliam Darcy had renewed his offer of marriage for only one reason: he needed a chaperone for his sister as she entered her first London Season. Love, this time, didn't enter into it. But now his marriage of convenience was proving most inconvenient. And all because Elizabeth's captivating charms drove him to near distraction. And when Darcy and his new bride became embroiled in scandal that endangered their very lives, it was Elizabeth who showed him how love could mend even the most jaded of hearts.
Librarian Note: There is more than one author by this name in the Goodreads database.
Born disabled and made motherless at the age of 11, Mary Baker (nee Cutler) spent her early childhood in hospitals and workhouses in Dorset, and her teenage years in a home for disabled and/or mentally-handicapped girls in London, before pursuing a promising nursing career. Against all her expectations she married, raised a family of her own, and went on to foster nearly 50 babies.
This had me scratching my head and thinking I was missing something. Story line, with continuity-that is seriously missing from this one.
The opening scene makes out like there is some big drama regarding Elizabeth now that her father has passed. She either marries Darcy (her father's recommendation) or...??? Never tells us. And no way would Jane and Bingley not have offered for her to live with them at Netherfield. So we never really understand why she chooses Darcy instead of her freedom ... as opposed to what? Bizarro! Also bizarro is the traveling, which while spoken of takes 2 days, but then miraculously they are where they are going in half an hour (WHAT??) and that happens every single time.
To make matters worse, Darcy such an anti-hero (but he gets explained later) still while reading it you can't help but go, THIS is what her father wanted for her?
Anyway, there is too much else going on that would make a good drinking game. Every time something is wonky take a shot.
This book had lots of positives. Darcy and Elizabeth marry due to Mr. Bennets request in a letter after he dies. Why Darcy ? we never find out but have to assume they became friends after as Bingley is married to Jane. Mr Philips encouraged Elizabeth to think over her future and safety and it was touching as Mr. Philips is rarely seen and usually left out. Darcy and Elizabeth seem to take a separate approach to marriage and don’t talk and that is their problem. The additional characters bring the couple together finally after they overcome those who wish them harm. I will say I enjoyed the story until the end. I spent time with the couple and to have the abrupt ending is disappointing.
I hate it when Elizabeth calls Mr. Darcy, Darcy after they are married really, who calls their husband by their last name.
Where is the rest of the story, the idea was great, but i felt like half the words are missing. It just wasn't smooth. Why did Miss Bingley and Miss Grantley basically get away with their actions. What ever happened to Miss Bingley?
Why did Frederick do what he did. It didn't make sense that he forged bank drafts with out either Darcy knowing. And why.
Darcy's and Elizabeth's relationship was off, Darcy's makes an alliance with Mr. Bennett for the wedding and then waits a year after his death, am I missing something?
The time frames were off and as i mentioned above some of the storyline is missing.
While its a good plot the execution is lacking. The last few chapters were devoid of real information and so much is glossed over or simply dropped from the story. Who was poisoning Elizabeth and Darcy? We assume it was the cousin but no idea. Who set up the accident that was potentially lethal? Why was Darcy working for the British government as a spy at night? This story needs to be fleshed out and answers given. Otherwise its just a ghost of a story.
Could of been a good story... poor execution. The Elizabeth we know, would of thrown Miss Bingley father's trade business back in her face, of course, not in a public setting. How Elizabeth let this Miss Grantly slander her? We never knew why this cousin of Elizabeth's (Older son of the Gardiners) wanted her dead nor why he didn't like her. We never know any reason why Mr. And Mrs. Gardiner were not around. Just disappointed.
This was a confusing plot in lots of ways I felt like it began in the middle with implications not explained well. Went along ok then went weird again. I kept reading thinking it would get better it didn't. 3 stars was generous in hindsight.
Interesting premise with misunderstandings and doubting. Four stars because of the lack of involvement or even kindly mention of Elizabeth’s fav aunt and uncle. The story for me was a little disjointed. It was not one that I couldn’t put down.
I am so confused, is there another book before this one? Who are this people? Darcy, Elizabeth and Georgiana are strangers! Lady Madlock nasty one moment then helpful the next with no explanation. Didn’t enjoy this at all!
An enjoyable and interesting variation inspired by Jane Austen's classic novel Pride and Prejudice. I would have liked to know more of the reasons for the villain's actions and to see their punishment. But it was good.
<*spoiler> One year from incident at Kent. Mr. Bennet dead. Jane married to Bingly. Something about Mama Bennet and Collins working together and only way out is marriage to Darcy. <*/spoiler>
