Breathwork – ‘a special type of exercise to manipulate breathing rate and depth’
Author Jane Rivers made her publishing debut with PAGANISM FOR BEGINNERS, followed by TAOISM FOR BEGINNERS, AYURVEDA FOR BEGINNERS, and now BREATHWORK - a refreshing concept to explore! While there are many self-help books on health matters, Jane brings an accessible mode of writing to assist us in understanding various forms of achieving and maintaining good health.
The Introduction to this new book sets the tone for the information Jane shares so well: ‘When it comes to humans, animals, and just about every single living thing that you can think of, they are going to have one thing in common: breathing. This is why the absolute first concern an emergency responder will look for in any type of emergency will be if the distressed person is breathing. This is an essential question as it will also be the first one asked about newborn babies, and the last one asked when somebody is dying. With all of this being said, have you ever wondered why breathing is so important? And since breathing is so vital, are you then able to practice and improve how you breathe through breathwork, with the ultimate goal of improving your mind, body, and spirit?’
Having challenged the reader as to the importance of breathing, Jane then details the definition of ‘breathwork’ – ‘Breathwork is defined as any type of conscious breathing technique or exercise.’ In this easily accessible manual, she discusses all aspects of respiration – O2 needs, CO2 tolerance, ways to use breathing to alter stress, to enhance workouts, improving the musculature that increases energy for breathing, and the exercises of breathwork that deliver better overall health, all related in realistic terms – and actionable results.
Erudite yet wonderfully entertaining to read, this is a fine way to broaden our horizons of health and body/mind care practices.
I have been looking into the concept of using breathing as a way of enhancing my spirituality so it was interesting to come across this book. It is very detailed on the topic of breathing, its benefits and how to do it properly. All bases were covered and now I need to go back and begin to practice and incorporate some of the exercises in the book.
