Thomas Wolsey has risen higher than anyone thought possible, but he’s keen on rising even higher. If he could only become Lord Chancellor, Thomas knows he can change England forever.
The nobility has been abusing their position for years, while the Church has become openly corrupt. As Thomas works to right these wrongs at home, his diplomatic skills are severely tested abroad as foreign rulers either seek alliances with England or try to rob her blind!
There’s trouble at court, too. Royal feathers have been ruffled. The king still lacks a son to carry on the Tudor line, while he is being outshone in Europe by younger rivals. King Henry looks to his clever cardinal to restore his tarnished reputation.
Thomas comes up with an extraordinary idea. He will make his king the figurehead of a bold new treaty that will bring peace to all Europe.
And make himself the greatest statesman of the age!
We see Wolsey reach his full power as he arranges the Field of the Cloth of Gold, blithely giving orders to kings, popes and emperors. Plenty of people give him warnings about the road ahead, but we see him stride forward smugly, absolutely sure in his ability to run a kingdom and please a king.
The best period in Thomas’ life. He is close to the king, practically king’s major influencer. He is a Cardinal, becomes a Chancellor, then papal legate in England, all riches and titles fall on him, with some amount of encouragement from himself. Wolsey is a known figure not only in England, but internationally. He speaks to European kings and Emperors on behalf of Henry VIII. He is organizing Universal Peace Treaty between England, Spain and France. The culmination of this part is 1520’s event , the organization of the Field of Cloth of Gold, in an attempt to cement the alliance with France. In his private life major events happen - Hampton court is almost completed, it is magnificent, but... Joan leaves him, not able to bear a life in hiding anymore.
Excellent read. I have always wanted to read something about wolsey and finally ms. Dowers has done an excellent job of bringing master wolsey to life. Bravo ms. Dowers
This was the 2nd chapter in the Wolsey Trilogy....rather repetitive with a fairly predictable narrative that never really challenged the reader....book 3 is "Forsaken "...the final chapter and Wolseys downfall....with Anne Boleyn as his nemesis...looking forward to the Conclusion.
