Hailey Edwards writes about questionable applications of otherwise perfectly good magic, the transformative power of love, the family you choose for yourself, and blowing stuff up. Not necessarily all at once. That could get messy.
This book is by far my favourite in the series so far, it has brought some answers to many questions and solidified some of the many potential questions that would be looming over future books.
I love Hadley, Midas, Ford, Bishop, Remy and all of the other characters that bring this world together but the one character that has surpassed these ones, the one character that isn't really a main character is Kinase (Midas's mum). I loved her bit of 'revenge' (sorry, not spoilers)
What has been as absolute surprise is Ambrose and his change of persona around Hadley and as most know, this relationship is extraordinarily unique in that Ambrose is magically tied to Hadley because of her past. He is her shadow and I can't wait to see where this is going. There are so many things I am looking forward to.
The storyline is becoming so exciting, the Coven are being hunted and there seems to be one way to infiltrate their boundaries and that one way just could be Hadley and Ambrose. I can't wait to see what happens there!!!
I am sad to say this but this book is about nothing.
This book went nowhere, the mystery sucked , it ended abruptly without resolution and it kinda would have sucked even with the resolution. The relationship between Hadley and Midas went nowhere, the only new thing is that they had sex, that's it.
This was a very huge filler filled with juvenile quips and unimportant details. I love this author but I'm being more than generous with my rating. This deserves one star, if I hadn't gotten this book I would have asked for a refund.
The story was great is you don't mind rehashing the same arguments and wise cracks, I'm more upset because I was looking forward to this book and this is a huge letdown.
I would never, never have guessed it as I was starting book 1, but this series has landed firmly on my favourites list. I'll admit this book was a little bit of a bridge, because the end feels more like a pause button as the story careens towards a wrap-up in the next, but that didn't bother me. There was just so much awesome continuing character development, and deepening understanding of Hadley/Ambrose. Plus, Grier and Linus came for a visit, so really, I just ate up every minute of it.
So much so that I think rather than put the series away until the next book is released, I'm going to so a re-read starting from book 1.
So damn good.
Re-read of series finished, like 5 days later...
Man, I really loved it. The character development is so strong, and I am thrilled by every minute of it. Plus, I can't wait to see how things continue to unfold with Hadley and Ambrose. Waiting until January may kill me...
This is fourth in an Urban Fantasy series and character and story arcs build from book to book. I definitely recommend reading them in order. In addition, this one has lots of Linus and Grier and Lethe from the Beginners Guide to Necromancy series so having read those wouldn't hurt, either.
So this story felt like a placeholder, really. There's a mad bomber stalking Hadley so there's extra deaths and unearned guilt. And a high-level traitor that wasn't hard to figure out. Frankly, I hated that reveal more than a little because I don't like it.
And it doesn't help that this one ends on a weak resolution. Yeah, they find a thing, but there's no confrontation and no real victory so the climax was a huge dud. And nobody likes dud climaxes. The only real culmination in this book was that Hadley and Midas finally do the deed. So one climax works out, I suppose. Yeah, I went there.
Anyway, three stars for a weak story that the relationship resolution couldn't boost.
A note about Steamy: They finally do it! Yay. It was sweet, but we only get the one, so it's on the low end of my steam tolerance. Bonus points for making it as weird as only Hadley can and still be all it needed to be.
While I was able to complete this book in a timely manner I was disappointed with the direction the characters have taken. Hadley has been growing into her role at the Potentate of Atlanta. It's a role she had seemed unready for but she was showing personal growth. All that stopped in "Proof of Life." Hadley, Midas, and the some of the crew seem to have regressed to young adults with their eye rolls, longing stares, making out during the worst moments, and lacking the maturity I appreciate in urban fantasy. It's hard to work up any enthusiasm to read the next book if this is the direction the series is going. "Proof of Life" also felt incomplete. I wanted more resolution with the overarching plot. That wasn't to be.
“None of us are who we were born. We evolve from the day we enter the world until the day we leave it. That’s life.”
Well...I was excited to see how the families coming to town would turn out, and how the crazy dynamics were going to affect the characters in this book (I was expecting some explosive confrontations and serious revelations going down)...But my hopes were a tad bit dashed on that front.
Also, our couple is still dealing with the fall out from the last book- but the retaliation (if you can call it that) is...not an all out attack per se, but more like sneaky hits here an there that inched along the plot. This actually kind of felt more like a novella instead of a full fledge book.
However, while we get a bit but I guess I didn't really feel the punch of that for some reason. We also did get more on the relationship front-but that was also a bit of a let down for moi.
I did like Midas mom in this book and how understanding she was- but at the same time the characters from her other series How to Dance an Undead Waltz were kind of annoying me in this one sad to say. Mixed bag all around.
Double dang...I dunno...I was really waiting for this one to come out, but I didn't really enjoy it as much as I'd hoped. ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
I am loving this series. Hadley is slowing come into her own and finding her happy. She and Midas her mate/fiancé are growing as a couple and I enjoyed their moments together.
Midas is working really hard to court Hadley, including a romantic date involving chocolate, unfortunately the coven is up to no good and blowing things up.
Visits from her family, a traitor in their ranks and pack problems keep Hadley on her toes. Edwards put Hadley through the ringer as people she knows are killed in these magical bombings. Can they stop them before it’s too late? A beef with another pack had me roaring with laughter. I really wish I could ee Midas and his mama’s face.
The developments with Ambrose is fantastic and I am curious to see what it means for Hadley.
While each of the books deals with a case, the overall series ARC and relationships have me recommending that you read this series in order. You can find it in Kindle Unlimited and on audio. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer
Everyone who knows me knows the entire Necromancer world of Hailey Edwards is one of my favorites of all time. The last Potentate of Atlanta book was also one of the best of the best. This one... not so much.
I still love the characters, love the relationships but the story just didn’t grab me... or go anywhere. The action was almost completely absent and what little there is mostly happens off page. Hadley and Midas’s relationship was much the same. They are together but... not. They are mated but are just too busy to actually do anything about it.
Then, just as things start looking up with the story-line... the book ends. Truly, just stops. No climax, no resolution to anything (although Hadley and Midas did FINALLY have a moment) just... “buy the next book!”
5 Stars... There was so much to love about this book from the action sequences, to the humor and wit, to the supernatural elements of the witchborn fae, the twists and turns and heartbreaking betrayal of beloved characters, the reconnection with Linus and Grier, and of course the interplay between Hadley and Midas... SO MUCH TO LOVE!!! I was glued to this read from the start, and I have to say that Hadley and Midas are near perfection for me... I love that they are both strong, intelligent, independent characters but that they both possess innate vulnerabilities that balance one another beautifully... In this read, we peel back the layers of Hadley's past trauma and it is done with care and beauty; I also love the connection between Hadley and Tisdale and that she finally experiences the love of a mother... Everything about this read touched me in some fashion and I absolutely loved the entire experience:)
This was a good addition to the series, but there were a few things that I wish could have been done differently.
- Less touchy-feely "lets examine our inner demons ad nauseum" between Midas and Hadley. - More Hadley/Alpha Kinase (Midas' mom) time together. I love where that is going. - Definitely more screen time for Lethe!
And I REALLY REALLY wish we could have been a party to the Alpha Kinase/Matron Pritchard conversation near the end of the book, and not just informed it happened. To me, that would have been an extra star.
Enjoyed every single word! This author delivers! Stepped into the book and before I knew it, I had 4 hours left to sleep before work... Following the story of Hadley & Midas with all the twist, turns,.battles & social connections drew me into the world quickly. Cannot wait until the next adventure!
I am more interested in Bishop and his relationship with that other fae who walks around with whips on his person. Please Hailey Edwards, you can't hint at all that and NOT give us that story. I hope we get it.
I am also glad that a lot more people know who Hadlee is now after the
I do like that Hadlee is building her tribe now. Love that Midas's mother is so loving towards her and was never mean. She was intimidating in the beginning but she is so sweet now. Finally a good mother in law portrayal in fiction!
And I am glad that we're seeing Boaz and Addie rebuild relationship with Hadlee too.
What I want to know is what is Ambrose. We found out the big secret about Cletus in the previous books. I am wondering if Ambrose is going to be similar. He's getting so attached to Hadlee
The plot was ok this time around, the 'witches/coven' are just a looming threat so far. We don't really have a real face though
Proof of Life is book four in the Potentate of Atlanta series by Hailey Edwards.
I’m loving this series which is a spin-off of the Beginner’s Guide to Necromancy series. You find both series on Kindle Unlimited.
Hadley is training to be the Potentate of Atlanta. It’s got action, suspense, and drama.
We continue the overall ARC of the fae coven trying to take over Atlanta. There are lots of battles, a traitor in the ranks, pack issues, and Midas and Hadley’s relationship.
We see Midas and Hadley work as a team and grow their ever evolving relationship. They are now mates/fiancés. She shares more of herself and secrets with him. It’s not all happy times. Boaz and Addie plus Boaz’s parents come to town. This adds emotional turmoil. We are also treated too Grier and Linus visiting.
Hadley’s connection to Ambrose is growing in ways she didn’t see and it will affect her life. I’m curious to see this development and what it means for Hadley. She also learns a lot in regards to the fae coven and that this problem is more serious than original thought.
Proof of Life was another adventures read. I highly recommend the series and this author.
This was a very good episode. It moves the evil witch clan plot forward towards something big that will take Hadley's unique skill. It also moves Hadley forward personally with her relationship with Midas solidifying - and with her dark secrets being exposed to the light. I liked the way that those around her handle those truths and I like the way that Midas is really the perfect person for her. Theiy are both broken but more whole when they are together.
Hadley and Midas are getting used to this whole being “mated” thing, and then her family comes to visit while magical bombs are blowing up locations Hadley is supposed to be in. With the coven’s tactics of using people close to them, it’s hard to know who they can trust, but they have to get a handle on this before any more people are hurt. This was another fantastic, action-filled story in The Potentate of Atlanta series and I loved the way this couple is getting closer and able to trust each other more all the time. Both have scars inside and out and it takes a lot to let down their guard with anyone. Their growth is interesting and a lot of fun, since Hadley makes the most inappropriate comments at all times, even intimate ones. Of course it’s always fun to see Grier and Linus make an appearance, along with Midas’s sister Lethe. I can’t wait to read the next installment, Moment of Truth.
This one was interesting as it really brought both sides of Hadley's life together and she learned that she finally has people who have her back, 100%, no questions asked. It's also the book where she and Midas finally got over themselves and cemented their mating. The one really fun thing that surprised me was Midas's mom and how great she was with Hadley! Time and time again she showed Hadley that she was family and she took care of and cherished her family. I also liked the role that Grier and Linus played, for them to see Hadley being competent in her job and growing in a great way.
The ending of this one was perfect, loved that happy pack meeting and the total smack down Midas's mother had for a certain character, but I sort of wished it was more and we could have gotten a scene by scene breakdown to read of it.
This is the fourth book in the Potentate of Atlanta, and I was eager to start. Hadley has become my favorite main character of this author…well, probably tied with Grier. I love how we have slowly gotten to know her shadowy past, and I have come to love her. In this latest, there is so much going on, I’m not sure where to start. A visiting pack, a visiting family, betrayals, finding family, romance, action…there is just so much good stuff in this book. I can’t wait to see what comes next for Hadley! A well-written, wonderful urban fantasy sure to please fans of urban fantasy and this author. Highly recommend.
In the newest entry, our fearless potentate has her heart broken again and secrets she was furiously burying find the light. Midas as always presents as a far better man than imagined in book 1. The power brought to bear in this book and the twist I wasn’t even imagining in my wildest nightmare have me waiting with baited breath for the next book. Things are heating up in Atlanta.
Another outstanding book by Hailey Edwards. I am still amazed that she got me to like Hadley. Now I root for Hadley and am really enjoying her journey as the next Potentate of Atlanta. Come on Moment of Truth - I am ready for you!
Knowing how Hadley and Midas like to tote their baggage around on their backs, it's been surreal to witness the two bungle through setting up house - popcorn-munching moments abound - oh, and a LOT of interruptions... grrrrrrrr.
Thoughts after reading Proof of Life: So, we all know Ambrose is... naughty, but it seems there is a lot more to the 'ole boy than chocolate munching and eavesdropping. If Remy wrote a 'How to be Successful in Business' self-help book, even though she is a figment of HE's imagination... I'd read it. I'd be down for a Bishop spinoff (really down). Tisdale doesn't need a man, but I'd like to see that particular Alpha dating. Things I knew in the PoA series to be absolute are actually not absolute. Coven is becoming a four-letter word in my head. Grier and Linus time is prevalent - TYLTBJ! Mentions of Star Trek - my heart is bursting! The yucky distaste of Boaz in my throat barely registers anymore.
I've got a gazillion more thoughts on The Potentate of Atlanta, but there's really only one more thing I wish to share. I imagine anyone reading this review is already a Hailey Edwards fan. For those who are new to the HE Necromancy world, I'll leave you with this - Edwards creates fantasy storylines like a person who has discovered the secrets of the Universe and decided she could one-up it - and she isn't wrong. ✨💫✨
Excellent book! I loved seeing Hadley and Midas grow closer together and fight to make their relationship work. And having all the characters from both series together again was amazing. The dark cloud of the coven is still hanging over their heads and it is not going to be an easy fix but I can't wait to see how it all comes together. I would highly recommend Proof of Life.
The best part about this book, for me, was the development of Ambrose .. I didn’t see that coming and I loved that part. The rest of the book was good but left me wanting more of some stories (Matron Pritchard) and less of others (Hadley and Midas swooning for each other). So bring on book 5 and let’s get the witches!!!!!!
I really love Hadley and Midas! They are so good together; they aren't perfect but they perfectly balance each other! In this book we have all the families coming together and a major betrayal in the works. From this, we learn so much about Hadley's background and past. She gains complete acceptance by Tisdale and gets to experience the motherly connection with her.
I can't talk about the betrayal or the catasthrope because it would spoil the book if you haven't read it. There are all kinds of twists/turns though!! I will say that there are some pretty interesting developments with Ambrose and I can't wait to see where that leads!
I honestly wasn’t thrilled when the author announced this series because I hated the character of Amelie. I was shocked in the first book by how much I liked her, and now I’m shocked to admit that maybe I like her a tiny bit more than even Grier. This series is a wonderful ride of action and emotions. I loved Tisdale and Hadley together. Midas couldn’t get hotter or sweeter. I need to know more about Bishop and his love life (another spinoff please!). Dying for the next book!
**Warning** Hailey Edwards series are meant to be read in order perhaps more so than many authors who claim each book in their series can be read as a standalone. This book can be read as a standalone but it will I believe make far more sense to you which will make it that much more enjoyable, if you read the first three books in the series beforehand. In fact I strongly recommend you read her Beginners Guide to Necromancy series which this series is spun off of before reading this book because several of the main characters in that series (Grier, Linus, Lethe, Boaz, Adie, Matron Pritchard) besides this series heroine Amelie Pritchard now Hadley Whitaker make appearances in this book. It’s just my opinion but I feel like the author got her titles mixed up between this book and the previous book in this series Pack of Lies. Because a big part of this book’s story arc is our heroes trying to discover who in the Atlanta Gwillgi Pack is providing the inside information as to Hadley’s whereabouts to the bomber trying to blow her up. In a surprising change from most Goodreads reviews this book had some less than favorable reviews leaving me wondering what to expect from it. One reviewer referred to it disappointingly as a “place holder” and I get it. If your main interest in this series is the defeat of the bad guys in the battle of good over evil, in this case the witchborn fae coven, there isn’t much progress made in this story. There are plenty of skirmishes with someone setting off magical fire bombs to businesses where Hadley is expected to be, and revelations regarding the witchborn fae, but no major battles or victories for the O.O.P. which Hadley leads. As for myself, someone who is as interested in the relationships between the characters as the action scenes, I loved this story. In some ways Hadley’s and Midas’s mating is causing friction within the pack as some feel Midas is getting the pack too involved in O.O.P. business to assist Hadley. Hadley herself cannot appear to be leaning too heavily upon Midas which would make her appear weak to both her enemies and those who must approve her permanent appointment as Atlanta’s potentate. In the previous book, Pack of Lies, Hadley’s true identity or previous identity as Amelie Pritchard the convicted dybbuk and former BFF of Grier Woolworth was revealed to Midas the beta of the Atlanta Gwyllgi Pack, her ardent suitor and fated mate. The couple overcame that revelation as Midas reveals his painful history to Hadley and shows her he accepts and loves her sordid past and all. Forgiveness and redemption are definitely main components of this series. As this story opens their relationship has progressed to where they and everyone else considers them mates and are cohabitating, sharing the same bed each night wrapped around each other but still not having sex. Which is leaving Hadley ( who unlike Grier was at the start of her series is not a blushing virgin) sexually frustrated. The reasons for both of their unspoken and perhaps subconscious reticence to add a sexual component to their relationship are gradually revealed as the story moves along. Part of the reason has to do with the abuse Amelie, (now Hadley) received as a child at the hands of her mother which she has yet to reveal to anyone including Midas. And yes, Edwards makes us wait for it until the very end of this book but Hadley and Midas finally have sex and although it’s highly satisfying for both, Hadley can’t help but make her attempt at seduction a bit humorously awkward at the start because socially awkward is Hadley’s m.o. But as in Pack of Lies, Hadley’s and Midas’s relationship is not the only one the author fleshes out in this story. Hadley’s families both real and pretend the Pritchards and the Whitakers come to Atlanta for a museum exhibit opening her pretend father wanted to see. Her pretend sister Adelaide and her biological older brother Boaz her fiancée plan to accompany the elder Whitaker using the trip as an excuse to spend some quality time with Hadley. But her biological mother, Amelie’s childhood physical and psychological abuser who disowned Hadley at her trial (see this is why you need to read The Beginners Guide to Necromancy series) inserts herself into the trip, supposedly to protect Addie’s virtue until her marriage to Boaz. Edwards uses the Matron Pritchard’s presence and the way she treated Amelie, as a stark counterpoint to the way Midas’s mother Tinsdale the pack’s alpha treats her as her new daughter. Tinsdale may be fierce even ruthless when acting as her pack’s alpha enforcing pack law or protecting her position within it, but when it comes to protecting her children of which she now considers Hadley among them, she is an even more fiercely protective and loving mother. Linus, still Hadley’s boss as the official Potentate of Atlanta and his fiancée and Hadley’s former BFF Grier now the Potentate of Savannah and the world’s most powerful necromancer, (again you’ve just got to read their series) arrive in Atlanta to support and monitor Hadley when apparent tragedy strikes her family. Lethe, Grier’s now BFF, self-appointed protector and Tinsdale’s daughter and Midas’s older sister, alpha of the Savannah Gwyllgi Pack decides to accompany them to protect Grier and visit with her mother and brother. She also wants to check out (spelled intimidate) Hadley whom she isn’t crazy about being mated to Midas her little brother. If the idea of Grier in the company of Linus actually needing a protector isn’t funny enough, watching Lethe and Grier spar over food to satisfy their seemingly insatiable appetites always is. This gives Edwards the opportunity to sort out the complicated relationship dynamics between these three characters and Hadley. There’s even a sea change in Hadley’s relationship with her ever present shadow and magical power source Ambrose, the shade that seduced her to the dark side, irrevocably altering the lifepath Amelie had been on. Hadley’s new business partner the fae Remy as usual brings her own brand of comedy to the story as the bond between the two grows closer. Some may say nothing of consequence happened in this story but I would respectfully disagree with that opinion. There may not be a resolution or even any major progress made in the battle to destroy the coven of witchborn fae intent on taking over Atlanta in this story but there was plenty going on.
