Hello, everyone! My name is Shen Jianguo. I am a night school instructor teaching ideological development and Marxist philosophy, occasionally analyzing recent policies and measures for my students.
All my classes are held in the middle of the night; I’ve never seen my coworkers or students during the day. The training institute’s classrooms are all in abandoned schools, hospitals, or residences. The license plate number of the bus that picks me up is 444; it always arrives at my house at precisely midnight and disappears at five in the morning.
What? You’re saying I’ve met a ghost? Impossible! As a staunch scientific materialist, I absolutely don’t believe there’s any such thing as ghosts!
I’ve only had one problem recently: couldn’t the training institute hold its classes a little earlier? Wouldn’t around 8 PM do? I fear neither heaven nor hell, but I do fear going bald.

If you like ‘Don't You Like Me’ by Lyu Tian Yi then you will probably enjoy this.
Shen Jianguo (MC) is such a clueless cinnamon roll you can’t help but root for him. Ning Tiance (ML) has the patience of a saint. It was adorable watching their relationship develop.
Would recommend this to anyone who wants a quick and fun read especially since E. Danglars has done the English fan translation.
Plot: Down on his luck out of work grad student gets hired by mysterious employer and immediately encounters a gazillion things that would make people less scientifically minded than him run away screaming about ghosts.
1. I want to be as oblivious to my failures as Shen JianGuo is to the dozen or so violent spirits who keep trying to scare and/or attack him. He’s just so relentlessly optimistic about everything it’s amazing.
2. I’m always a sucker for narratives which tell two stories, or two sides of the same story. Shen JianGuo’s first person PoV is an excellent narrative device because you are simultaneously terrified by the weird ass shit that keeps happening around him AND you’re cackling at the depths of his obliviousness.
3. And okay, I liked it because the obliviousness was funny (especially when every other character living or dead just… gave up in sheer bewilderment) and that could probably have sustained the whole story for me. But then it becomes a series of narratives of ghosts being able to move on because the things keeping them in this plane are solved by Shen JianGuo just being a really decent guy who wants to help everyone.
4. It went from being really funny to being really sweet and that was very good.
This book was such a fun, light, quick read and I found myself really wanting to pick it up and jump right back into the story.
Shen Jianguo is an upstanding citizen, a dedicated Marxist, and an all around do-gooder, good person. And despite being an incredibly powerful natural exorcist, 100% does not believe in ghosts. Even if his new mysterious night-job involves teaching a class full of the city’s most fierce ghosts.
Ning Tiance is his cultivation sect’s senior disciple, in line to be the next sect leader upon finishing his graduating assignment—only to have that assignment stolen out from underneath him by some nobody who neither cultivates nor even believes the ghosts he’s transcended existed to begin with.
As Shen Jianguo’s unwavering moral character and fearlessness drive him to help his classroom of misbehaving students, Ning Tiance can’t help but come to his rescue…or, rather, at least his assistance.
If you’re looking for a short, light-hearted comedy with a wholesome feel-good plot and romance to boot, this is the perfect book. There are certainly some tragic backstories and some hauntings here and there, but Shen Jianguo’s infallible quest for justice and doing the right thing, for helping others, makes the story feel warm and inspiring.
How could Ning Tiance not fall for him?
As a bonus, the five extras fleshed out the story well—some providing us with Ning Tiance’s version of his and Shen Jianguo’s initial meetings (and a secret glimpse of who fell for who first…or who fell harder) as well as extra chapters from the POV of a couple of minor characters.
In summary, this was a really great read for something lighter with an overall positive vibe, and even had me laughing out loud every now and then. Cute, wholesome, funny, and just plain delightful.
I am not a fan of comedy, I prefer angst, but I have come to love this book so much! It's full of humorous charm and the main character's unwavering views are enough to make me adore the whole story. It's not perfect but the novel felt like a breath of fresh air.
"Justice may be late, but it will never be absent. Even if a day should come when I was utterly penniless, I would still live honorably, without a stain on my conscience."
Shen Jianguo is genuinely such a rare and refreshing main character. He’s principled without being preachy, kind without being naive, and his unshakable belief in science, Marxism, and educating others makes him hilariously endearing and unexpectedly inspiring.
What makes him stand out is how he never compromises his values, even when surrounded by literal ghosts. Like when he calmly teaches his "ghost students" with full sincerity, completely unaware of their true nature, it’s both funny and heartwarming. His belief in the power of education and commitment to rational thought never wavers, even in the face of supernatural absurdity. He stands firm, offering homework, lectures, and compassion instead of fear. I have also learned a lot because of him. He's a really good teacher.
In his world, every problem can be solved with empathy, policy, and a blackboard. He is hilariously and beautifully serious about things no one else would be. In a genre where leads often get swept into supernatural or magical worlds and must "adapt," Shen Jianguo does not. The supernatural world adapts to him.
Shen Jianguo doesn’t have jokes, but he is funny as hell because he is entirely serious in the most ridiculous situations. His deadpan reactions, dutiful note-taking, and tendency to explain socialist theory to ghosts make him one of the funniest characters I've ever met. This comedic tension between his total sincerity and the unhinged world around him forms the novel’s beating heart.
Anyway, I also like his and Ning Tiance's dynamic. There were a lot of times in the book wherein Shen Jianguo is such a "delulu" when it comes to Ning Tiance, and it's funny as hell. Their relationship isn’t built on dramatic declarations or passionate outbursts, but on mutual respect, understanding, and unwavering care. Their love grows not through force but through trust, through presence, and through the subtle intimacy of two people choosing to walk beside each other despite everything. The romance is subtle yet powerful, rooted in mutual respect with Ning Tiance, who never tries to change him but instead honors the way he sees the world. Shen Jianguo is proof that sincerity is radical, and being a good person—truly, stubbornly good—is the most extraordinary thing of all.
I feel like I can go on and on about Shen Jianguo if given the opportunity because I really like him a lot. I could give it a perfect rating just for him but I also have a lot of wishes for the whole story. But I just want to say that, I wish we have seen a lot more from them. Because I didn't really check the chapter count so when the last extra ended, it genuinely made me feel sad. Huhu, take care of yourself Shen-laoshi!
It was very comedic especially since Shen Jianguo had no idea ghosts were real despite being actively haunted, and it also had a nice ending. The romance wasn’t really the main reason for reading it though. There wasn’t much of it.
4.5 / 5:"Those who'll blame everything under the heavens but themselves will think even a blue sky with white clouds is mocking them. For Teacher Shen, stormy weather is all for helping you temper your will.
I've always lived with the agony I experienced at my death. Whatever I saw was full of blood. But with Teacher Shen's lesson plans for leading people onto the true path and his own views on the world recorded in the notebook, written on my heart, engraved on my very soul, what grudges and resentments can I still have?
Over a hundred years have passed. If I still stay tangled up in these little matters of the past, then I am really blind."
such a special story 🤍🤍
what i loved most about this story is how it blended the supernatural rites of the cultivation world with the trivial events of the modern day. the ultimate theme of this novel is simply about moving on, but also being able to hold onto your values and stay true to your heart.
shen jianguo is the kind of the person who doesn’t care about the matters of ghosts or hauntings; he only cares most about the values you hold to keep on pushing forward. there are many fierce ghosts he meets who have so much anger in them and who are carrying an incredible amount of trauma—and then they meet this young man who’s so wildly oblivious to their sinister nature that it stumps them completely. this will then become the same man who will help them be able to move on.
i loved seeing there be this sort of double-sided perspective where the entirety of the story read through shen juanguo’s straight-edged worldview, but we also saw all these little details of the supernatural existing around him. it made for some very hilarious moments, and also incredibly heartfelt.
this was absolutely wonderful, and im glad to have stumbled across through chance. i hope many more people can witness the sweet nature of this hopeful story about life & death. it’s very well-translated :’)

This is the story of Shen JianGuo, a night school teacher. His schedule is always at night and unknown to him, his students are all ghosts.
This is a short and funny novel. Though it deals with ghosts, there wasn't a time that I got scared. It has a bit of bloody parts but it focuses more on the trauma that the ghosts experienced when they were still alive.
I love our main character because he always try to rationalise things even though people will usually jump to the worst conclusions. He always react in a way that he thinks everyone has something good in them. It sometimes seems naive to me but I like that characteristic of our MC.👍
There are lots of funny moments with the ghosts. And very much appreciate the extra chapters.😆
This was a fun read but a bit tamer than expected.❤
really short and funny. even tho it’s about ghosts it’s not horror in like any way. it’s light hearted and it genuinely made me laugh the whole way through. love how in the last chapter/extra someone asked him how he was so strong against ghosts he was like heh bc of this and handed them a book on marxism. like yes communist king!
also don’t go into this expecting it to be scary/horror. it does have some romance but the guys don’t get together until the very end. i recommend reading the extras as well as the first 3 are from the MLs perspective and the next one is from the ghost bus driver’s perspective and the last one is basically an epilogue.
Teacher Shen is too pure a person to exist... Although the book has ghosts and celestial masters, the best aspect is that in times it's very practical. Even the reasons that Shen Jianguo's mind comes up with are although funny, it requires some serious practical outlook...
So quite hilarious with a twist of moral education, it is definitely a good recommendation!!
The only qualm i have with this book is that it's too short. I loved it so much I wouldn't mind reading another 40 chapters! It's hilarious, but also a little creepy, thoughtful, and sad, with interesting worldbuilding and references to Chinese folklore, afterlife, and urban legends. Highly recommend!
Shen Jianguo gets a job teaching at a night school except the hours are terrible and his students are… a bit eccentric. Funny, short book that basically hinges on one joke: Shen-laoshi’s earnest naïveté. I really liked the extras from Ning Tiance’s POV, it was fun to see Shen-laoshi’s obliviousness from a new perspective.
Calm, rational, and righteous Shen Jianguo gets a teaching job at a very strange institution. The classes are all after midnight, all of his students seem to be in horror costumes all the time, and there's this random exorcist who keeps interrupting his classes.
This is a sweetly hilarious farce. Shen Jianguo keeps getting attacked by ghosts, dealing with them very efficiently and kindly, and helping them transcend and enter the reincarnation cycle without realising he's doing it. He just thinks he's helping various troubled young people with their mental and social problems! A quick and entertaining read at 42 chapters.
My main thought about this book is that I think it works best in other mediums where other PoVs can be more organically incorporated: I've listened to bits of the audiodrama and enjoyed it, but I think it would be even better as a visual medium like a comic or an animated series. The writing is best when it stages the comedic scenes that highlight the differences between what Shen Jianguo (the main character) sees and what other characters see.
To me the book has a very rocky start, but gets better: when we first meet Shen Jianguo, the dense-ness of his PoV felt overdone. Between his exaggerated obliviousness, and the confusing circumstances of the first ghost he meets (Mr. Saw), I wasn't sure it was my type of humor. But I think these were the chapters where the author was still figuring out how to write the book and the characters. The writing and humor certainly get more refined as you go on—my level of engagement peaked between chapters 13 to 30, before the author rushed their way towards the ending.
The women are written so lovingly! My favorite parts were all the arcs involving the girl ghosts. The author really took their time with telling their stories, making for the most heartwarming resolutions and bittersweet partings. When you see the MC interact with the girl ghosts, you understand why he was so popular with school AND why the ML falls in love with him. These are the parts that shone for me the most. The author's end-of-chapter skits for the girls' ending were also really funny.
The romance was smooth, stress-free, and basically just a side dish. I enjoyed it more for how the romance characterized Shen Jianguo than what the relationship or the ML (an exorcist from a well-known family) was like.
There are some really cute outsider PoV extras, but the ones that are in the ML's PoV were so badly executed (they felt so boring and redundant) that it took us 2-3 weeks to power through them, lol.
In conclusion: I enjoyed this book for the middle bits. XD It's a nice and easy book if you want a short and funny story with a gay main character who's very comfortable and confident in his sexuality (and his pecs!). Although there is some romance, the overall vibe of this novel was very gen! Also, apart from being a poor grad student, the main character was completely self-sufficient and did NOT need any saving at all, which was nice! He's very athletic and earnest.
CONTENT NOTES: gruesome deaths (though the writing is very good at focusing more on the afterlife), bullying and abuse (of ghosts in their former lives), and the MC's unquestioning trust in the entire justice system
OTHER NOTES: I read this in Chinese, but this novel has a complete (though unofficial) English translation! And from what I have seen of it, the quality and readability are excellent. The way some of the jokes were translated were honestly very inspired.
This story relies heavily on the protagonist’s naivety. I refuse to call it practicality or a spirit of scientific inquiry because there are several instances where the protagonist doesn’t put things together logically. For example, when Shen Jianguo is employed at the school, he assumes that the students he is teaching come with traumatic pasts and from impoverished circumstances. He then vows to educate them. Later in the story, he is paid handsomely when a student ‘graduates’. When this happens, he theorises and concludes that the students must come from rich homes. He professes time and again that he upholds the law and yet, when he is attacked and nearly killed by a colleague, he is comfortable with the reassurance that the colleague has been sent for therapy. The question of reporting the incident doesn’t arise. The protagonist trusts the principal’s goodwill purely because he gets paid handsomely and in advance. There is this constant inconsistency which makes the protagonist unrealistic. There’s no attempt to flesh him out and he therefore remains a caricature in his own story. What starts off as comedic writing starts grating the nerves beyond a point.
Hilarious with hints of romance and philosophy sprinkled in, this story made me bend over double in laughter more times than I could count!
Shen Jianguo, an ideology and politics graduate, is possibly the most oblivious man when it comes to the supernatural. And unexpectedly, this fact combined with his innate sense of righteousness, is what helps him become the inadvertent exorcist of a class of ghosts. The end goal being "graduation" aka, transcending to be reborn.
The fact that he does his actual job of exorcism, while believing he is only a simple teacher with important life values to impart, makes for a humorous read. Especially when the resident Chief Cultivator, Ning Tiance, keeps trying and failing to persuade him about the existence of ghosts.
Short and meaningful plot, well written characters and for a truly wonderful time that I had while reading this, I definitely recommend!
PS: The translator has a done a brilliant job as well, which just adds to it!
