The Undoing is here. Superman couldn’t stop it. Darkseid couldn’t stop it. Only Diana Prince is left to hold back the being that could spell the complete disintegration of the cosmos. But will even she be powerful enough for the task?
Meanwhile, in another future, Nubia’s attempts to stop the theft of ancient artifacts have led her to an even bigger conspiracy, and an even bigger foe. Circe is up to her old tricks, even after all these years-and she has an offer that Nubia will find hard to refuse.
Becky Cloonan is an American comic book creator, known for work published by Tokyopop and Vertigo. In 2012 she became the first female artist to draw the main Batman title for DC Comics.
Ohhhh goodness. That first story hurt my feelings!
I didn't know how Cloonan was going to finish up the second part of the story, but she did an excellent job. I can't say too much about it because I think that it's a story that is easy to spoil, but it did tug a little at my heart strings in unexpected ways. The art style was just as gorgeous as the first issue. I wonder where DC is going to take Diana from here or if they will circle back around to this story eventually. The second part of the Nubia story was a little wordy, but I enjoyed a few elements including the references to West African, Caribbean, and African-American folklore through the creation of Aunt Nancy. I can't say exactly what she represents, but I definitely appreciated the nod that McKinney added to the story. There was also a deep respect and reference for ancestors and as a Black comic book reader that was a very important element for me. Once again, I can't give too many specifics about it; however, it was done very well. I think McKinney could have pulled back a little on the text, but the story was good and I'm curious to see what DC is going to do with Nubia in Infinite Frontier!
Diana Prince story: 4⭐, maybe 4½. This was really good, both art and story wise. It was really cinematic, and made me want to pickup her Infinite Frontier ongoing in the hopes it's half as good as this.
Nubia story: 2⭐ I wasn't overly keen on it, but it wasn't bad. I just found it hard to really care, as they've done a horrible job in elevating any of these new characters IMO. It's interesting enough, if you're a fan of New52 JL/Darkseid War. That's about it.
I didn't enjoy this one nearly as much as the first issue.
The first story felt strange, in that it seemed like it should've been a very long one shot instead of 2 short stories. The art was gorgeous as ever, though. Love Bartel's work!
The Nubia story was too wordy, for me. I know the author writes novels, and it's a common thing that most authors going from writing novels to comics just make every text box and bubble way too wordy. Unfortunately, my eyes glazed over quite a bit while reading it.
There were a few moment were it felt a little cheesy, but then the end happens and I realize, it wasn’t silly, it was hopefully. I really liked the art, I felt a lot of things while watching Diana take on the end of the world but really, this was a perfect Wonder Woman story. I hope this gets put into a volume, cause I think this is perfect as a stand alone. Even outside future state.
THE SECOND STORY;
This issue we learn a little more about Nubia, her crown and why she isn’t on the Amazon island. She takes on Circe and total kicks her ass. It’s pretty sweet. I also hope this one gets its own trade cause I think people would love being introduced to black Wonder Woman, it’s been a while since she’s been around.
The first half is a nice sendoff for Diana. Brave and at peace, giving a nice farewell to old allies and some gorgeous shots. But the second half just really didn't catch my attention at all. So a mixed bag in this package.
Here's an incredible two part story by Becky Cloonen (with the incredible powers of Jen Bartel illustrating) that loses a little steam in the second half but ultimately serves as a satisfying experience. It feels almost biblical at times.
Right out of the gate, Wonder Woman hugging Spectre is my favorite thing ever and without question stands as the best part of this issue. The first story feels like it treads new ground and gives a very introspective Sandman feel that I will eat up even if it sucks. Watching Superman and Darkseid devour each other into oblivion was, as it sounds, incredibly badass to behold.
The second half of the story is aight. Everything looks amazing by the way. Jen Bartel is a legit sorceress when it comes to creating amazing artwork. She's the illustrator I admire most currently. Everything looks so lush and the colors... i mean, my fuck. The COLORS! 😳🥺😍
The second story is good but I think I missed an issue cause I was totally lost. 🥴
Jen Bartel's art is stunning! I love the way Wonder Woman is drawn, she's so ethereal and gorgeous. I liked the way this story was wrapped up and I like how Wonder Woman is wearing Batman's utility belt. I loved this issue. I will say, I'm a fan of New 52 Darkseid, so I liked this a lot. If you aren't a fan of this, you may not like this issue as much as I did.
I also liked Nubia's story. It seems like it's a build-up to launch her own series, so it's not meant to be a complete story. I would definitely consider reading more as I love the Amazons.
The Wonder Woman story is emotionally powerful and looks gorgeous to boot. The Nubia story loses a bit of steam, but is still very interesting. This issue is fantastic and the Immortal Wonder Woman arc for Future State is an absolutely resounding win.
Diana's story is both sorrowful and hopeful, and the art and coloring steal the show. The light reflections in each panel changes the hue and vibrancy, and it's beautiful. I love the constellation at the end—yet another new symbol to add to WW's mythology.
I liked the action, backstory, and intrigue in the Nubia story. It is too wordy—cliched writing could've easily been cut to let the panels tell more of the story. That last panel, though, certainly says a lot.
My goodness, the Wonder Woman story was great! It hit on all the right notes. The art was tremendous and really captured some amazing scenes. If it was just that story alone, this would be 5 stars. The Nubia story was good but not even close to the main one. It had some good action but was a little too verbose at times.
The wonder woman stuff was sad but written beautifully, and the art was just fantastic and only added to the story. The Nubia stuff was interesting but it was a bit too wordy.
