Into the Sound

Rate this book
A terrified voice on the phone. The line goes dead. The mystery begins.

During a superstorm, Holly Boswell receives a panicked call from her sister, Vivian: Come get me…There’s somebody coming. But when Holly arrives at a Long Island marina, there’s only her sister’s abandoned car. Vivian is gone.

It’s all eerily familiar. Holly and Vivian used to play hide-and-seek as children. It was a reprieve from the mental abuses of their parents, psychology professors who raised the siblings as if it were research. Decades later, Holly is reminded of their childhood games.

In her relentless search for the answers, Holly is reading between the lines in Vivian’s journals. She’s untangling clues in their mother’s diary and discovering secrets from her sister’s private world that are casting a dangerous shadow. Maybe Vivian has reasons for wanting to disappear from her well-to-do life. Or is it something more sinister? As Holly follows Vivian’s trail, she can’t shake the feeling that someone might be following her.

**Many thanks to NetGalley, Thomas & Mercer, and Cara Reinard for an ARC of this book! Now available as of 12.1**

It starts with a phone call…

"Come get me...There's somebody coming." Holly fears the worst for sister Vivian and heads to the Sound, where they spent much of their childhood, during a deadly storm. Holly doesn't know what to expect, but goes against her better judgment and goes after her sibling, falling into a pattern they began in childhood. However, this time is different. Vivian is nowhere to be found, and Holly takes it upon herself to roll up her sleeves and find out the reasons behind her disappearance and whether all of this is connected to Vivian's husband...or her parents and an odd childhood...or to a mysterious colleague of her professor parents...before it's too late to save Vivian.

I hate to say this, but reading that synopsis is probably more thrilling than reading this entire book. The opening phone call is about the only suspenseful event that occurs until about 85% (I think). I can't remember the last time I read a suspense book that made me laugh so much...but I was laughing AT the corny dialogue, the over-the-top-everything-but-the-kitchen-sink plot, and of course, a bunch of really odd metaphors and similes, such as "Her small ass fluttered like a butterfly."

...what?

The suspension of disbelief required to enjoy this on any level was lost on me. I didn't like any of the characters, there was a ton of time spent on backstory but even that couldn't get me interested, and it usually does in almost any scenario. We were also told that Holly USED to be a journalist....over and over and over, as if you could forget after the first few times. Add in the requisite 'main female lead has an alcohol problem' and cuckoo-for-Cocoa-puffs parents, and a touch of the mob, and I was just baffled. I was hoping for some sort of exciting and redemptive ending, but what I got was a lot of Hallmark-y weirdness.

I'm sure there will be some sort of audience for this book, but I wasn't it. I have heard much better things about this author's previous work, however, so I may check that out someday, but I can't say I'd personally recommend this one.

A terrified voice on the phone. The line goes dead. The mystery begins.

Holly Boswell receives a panicked phone call from her sister, Vivian asking her to come get her because there is someone coming. Holly goes to where her sister says she is, but Vivian is not there. The two sisters played hide and seek as children - could this be the grown-up version of it?

For whatever reason, some books work for reader, while others do not. This clearly did not work for me. I struggled to connect with the characters and sadly found myself disinterested in the plot. When I read the synopsis, I thought this would be an engaging and entertaining read and it is for some. Unfortunately, it just didn't work for me.

We can't love them all and this was simply the case, also look at the reviews of those who enjoyed this book and decide for yourself.

I have not read this author before but would be open to reading another of her books. Perhaps, this was a one off for me.

Thank you to Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.

Into the Sound is the latest domestic family drama from author Cara Reinard. I've read the author's previous book, but not her lighter / earlier works. I enjoyed this one a lot, and it has some great perspective points. Two sisters, a recurring theme for me lately, with a troubled past. One disappears. What does the other know?

Truthfully, this book traveled all over the map. Mostly set in the current time period, there were a couple of minor leaps to the past to set the tone... but ultimately, we learned about history through the main character's eyes. The sisters' mother was an atrocity, and the woman should've been put in prison. Wow! What a great way to make us hate a character and feel sympathy for the daughters. But even there, they were both guilty of things too. Holly married a man with some horrible tendencies and control issues. Vivian fell in bed with the mob. Of course they'd have drama!

Reinard is a good writer. The plots are intriguing. The characters are flawed and multi-dimensional. They are somewhat not realistic, but I do enjoy the intensity of them. I plowed through this one in a few hours earlier today. Looking forward to her 2022 release even more now.

During a Long Island superstorm, Holly Boswell receives a panicked call from her sister, Vivian, but when Holly arrives at a Long Island marina, there’s only her sister’s abandoned car. Holly begins a frenzied search for Vivian which gets her into all kinds of trouble.

I'm having a difficult time reviewing this book because I feel like I shouldn't have liked it as much as I did but I got dragged right into Holly's manic world. She did some really bizarre things in her search for her sister and I was thinking 'No Holly, not a good idea' a lot. Like a train wreck though, I couldn't look away. The book went off on all kinds of tangents - flashbacks to the sisters' horrible childhood, infidelities, secret journals, the mob and so on. Maybe it was a little too much for one book and I did need to put on my disbelief suspenders but I had to keep reading until I learned what happened. I actually laughed out loud a few times but I'm not sure if the parts that made me laugh were meant to be funny or not. That's what I found so intoxicating about this book; my head was spinning!

Ratings are all over the map for this one so I think you just have to take your chances. I can't really recommend it but I enjoyed it for the most part in spite of some repetition.

I was invited to read an ARC of this novel by Ashley Vanicek at Amazon Publishing so thank you to her, to Thomas & Mercer and Netgalley as well as Cara Reinard for this opportunity. All opinions expressed are my own.

This is a fast-paced story with a few twists and turns as well as family problems and the mafia in the background.

Vivian went missing during a severe storm, calling her sister earlier with a desperate plea for help. Holly, her sister, tries to find her and at the same time understand what was going on in the lives of Vivian and her husband, while her own marriage is far from perfect and Holly is getting fed up with her life. The sisters share a unique bond that was built in their childhood through the constant psychological experiments to which they were subjected by their overbearing mother.

We meet a group of fascinating characters. Starting with the sisters, Vivian and Holly, whose childhood was far from easy and influenced the decisions they make as adults. Usually, I do not like fragments in which we move back to the past of the main characters, but in this case, it did not bother me, and it allowed me to better understand the trauma that these two women experienced growing up. Vivian and Holly's husbands you wouldn't call boring either. And their uneasy marital relationships add an interesting element to the story. There are also various supporting characters, which are also far from average. They all hide secrets and behave suspiciously.

This story has a good, fast pace that I personally like very much. The case of Vivian's disappearance is very mysterious and even when we are not getting closer to finding Vivian, we are constantly discovering new secrets in the life of her and the people around. With Clay, Vivian's husband, linked to the mafia, the stakes are high and the risk that Vivian might be already dead is high. You'll also find some nice twists.

The ending is interesting and very satisfying. It definitely fits the story. It is also consistent with what we know about the characters.

I definitely recommend this story, and not only to people who like the missing person theme. And if you like exploring the details of one character's life one by one then this story will be definitely for you.

Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book was not the one for me. I put it down at about 40% because it was just so ridiculous, and I literally hated every single character. The way the men in this book treat the women is just.... I'm surprised it was written by a woman honestly.

This book wasn't on my radar at all. But I always enjoy a good thriller so I was happy when I was offered the arc of "Into the Sound", especially because the blurb makes it sound very intriguing. Sadly, this was just not the book for me at all.
I actually don't even have many good things to say about this if at all, which is why this review will come off as very negative. I apologize for that because I am sure the author put a lot of work into this book, I, personally, simply couldn't appreciate it.
The writing was okay, nothing special. It didn't manage to draw me into the story nor build up any suspense for me. It's also very simple, reading more like a debut, and the book definitely needs some more editing because it's way too convoluted.

The characters are terribly bland and I wasn't at any point interested in their fate. I just didn't care. The backstory of Holly and her missing sister really intrigued me at first but then fell flat because it was just... really unrealistic in a way that kept me from emotionally engaging with it even a little bit. The mother was a one-note kind of character, just like every side character, really. The men in this story are honestly just laughably bad caricatures, written only to be hated by the (female) readers, devoid of any kind of depth or complexity. Women are supposed to hate them, and that is really all the reason for them to be in this book. And the revealed "main villain" in the end? I'm honestly surprised a woman wrote this character the way they were written, because damn if that doesn't hit many sexist, even misogynist tropes.

Holly, the protagonist, is all over the place really. Reinard gives her a multitude of character traits, yet doesn't flesh her out at all, making her more of a caricature than an actual character. The alcoholism angle is especially bad because it fits the good old thriller trope of the alcoholic/unreliable female narrator without actually using the strengths of this trope. It's just there, it has no impact on the plot, the narration, the character at all. At some point during the later parts of the story, I think around the 60 or 70% mark, Holly tells us that she always wanted to be a detective actually and always wanted to triumph over the police, which made me go what??? Since WHEN??? It's another information about the character that is just thrown in there willy-nilly and has no basis in anything we've learned about Holly up to this point. She's basically a blank slate that the author keeps throwing random character traits at and none of them really stick.

The plot is a convoluted mess, but I do admit that I rarely like thrillers that involve the mob. It's just not my thing. Still, if the story is good enough I enjoy it nonetheless. Here though, the story simply didn't make sense too many times and some of the decisions the characters (Clay, for example) make are based on in-universe rules that make no sense when you look at them just a little more closely. And there is just. So Much Unnecessary Information. It often felt like the author was just trying to fill the pages. A lot of this book is just Holly telling us every single thought she ever has, repeating plot points we already know about, having conversations that contribute to absolutely nothing.
There are too many side-plots, too, that add nothing of worth to the story but keep detracting attention from the actual plot. This ruins the pacing of said plot and just accentuates how very thin it is in the first place. The aforementioned backstory of the sisters could have been so interesting, but in the end, it had no impact on anything beyond some superficial details that wouldn't be missed otherwise. And the whole part about Holly's father? Why was this even in here? What did it add to the story other than reminding us that Holly cannot possibly be an actual human being, considering the way she reacts to seemingly life-altering revelations? It's just. I don't even know, guys...

I don't doubt at all that "Into the Sound" will be enjoyable to other readers, but I personally feel more like I wasted a few hours of my life on this book. I would have dnf'ed it after just a few pages if this hadn't been an arc and I have this personal policy of not dnf'ing arcs, but honestly, this wasn't worth it. It might even make me reconsider said policy.

Thank you to Thomas & Mercer and Netgalley for the arc.

____

This was... not good and I should probably reconsider my personal rule of not dnf'ing arcs.

Here are some glorious excerpts of the beautiful and exquisite writing in this novel:

"Jace's ass was grass."

"Her nerves redirected to her hands mashing through mounds of ground meat like a woman possessed."

"She cried for Archie, her father, who was so fantastic but had no visitors."

"Yes, I'm sorry for my potty mouth."

"Spikes of hot waves streamed from Holly's head to her toes."

"Vivian and Tom were living this sexy outlaw life, and Holly was just trying not to die."

Holy hell, I cannot explain how bad this book was. This may be the worst book I have read in my entire life. Strangely, it started off just fine. The first 25% was actually somewhat enjoyable, with decent writing and a fairly captivating plot. After the 25% mark though, everything went south. For one, the writing style seemed to completely change. It's as if the first 25% was written by a completely different author. After the quarter mark, the writing simply got lazy and uninspired, and the plot went completely haywire. I also found the book insulting to those struggling with alcohol addiction and domestic violence.

SPOILERS BELOW:

We're supposed to believe that the main character can't get through a single day without ample amounts of alcohol (so much so that she keeps water bottles in her car to "dilute the smell" of it on her breath), yet she literally spends the ENTIRE book driving all over Long Island (sometimes with her kids in the car) and talking with police officers. NO ONE ever notices she's completely drunk? She's also still "supermom" even though she drinks all day? In one chapter she drinks multiple glasses of sangria, drives home, drinks two entire bottles of wine, but still has no trouble cooking dinner or helping her kids with their homework? THEN, she hops on a plane that same night, all while never being sick or passing out? I understand that functioning alcoholics are a thing, but we're supposed to believe that she simply just decided one day that she'll "never drink again" and that's that? Addiction cured? Unreal.

And speaking of suspending reality, you'll have to do a lot more of it to get through this book. Consider this:

1.) In this book, people have intimate, top-secret chat sessions on public computers... but allow those public computers to save their passwords.

2.) In this book, ferries run in all weather, even during hurricanes.

3.) In this book you can fly to Bermuda looking for someone who has disappeared, and the first random person you encounter on the island will know exactly where your missing loved one is!

4.) In this book, husbands can control every minuscule aspect of their wives' lives, with absolutely no pushback, fighting, or other confrontation.

5.) In this book your sister will cease all communication with you, FOREVER, if you miss your niece's or nephew's first birthday party (even if it's held completely across the country).

6.) In this book, you can get into a screaming, knock-down fight on a boat, at a marina, in broad daylight, shoot someone during said fight, and no one will hear or see a thing. Also, luckily for you, the cops will not investigate the death.

In conclusion... I wish I could get the hours of my life back that I spent reading this garbage.

My Review:

This well-crafted tale was diabolically plotted and maddeningly paced. My brain was on fire spinning and discarding theories while the vile and heinous slate of cunningly contrived characters made me itch. The vast majority of the uniquely twisted characters were either repulsive, pernicious, deeply bent, or intensely annoying. I despised them all while gripping my Kindle tightly and agonizing and despairing over the constant missteps the weaker sister made while searching for her missing sibling.

Cara Reinard is a sly minx and her intriguing tale was intensely compelling and kept me on edge. My shoulders were in my ears even when busy with other tasks and my curiosity kept me reaching for my Kindle every spare moment I could shake loose. I lapped up every well-chosen word and resented any interruption to my perusal, as I didn’t want to miss any of the sneakily buried clues. Needless to say, I was deeply invested and wiggling on the hook all the way through.

More of a psychological puzzle then actioned packed thriller, this still well thought out book was a interesting read. Makes you wonder what would it be like to have parents or be parents that literally brought their psychology work home and had used their kids to prove and disprove their work? Years later to use those analytical skills taught by said parents to unwrap a mystery regarding a missing sibling? Be perfect if it had a little more action involved, awesome story though!

Missing sister

This book had a big mystery and a crazy wind up to a very quick ending. I would have enjoyed this more if the pace was a little more even. I thought the mafia tie in was a little unbelievable as well. Th book had my attention at the beginning but it soon became a little more difficult to stay with the story.

In Cara Reinard's Into the Sound, this thrilling new thriller will leave you breathless and speechless by the time you finished reading. It all started for Holly Boswell, a housewife and doting mother of two sons, and a former journalist, when she received a call from her older sister Vivian in the midst of the storm. She dropped everything and rushed to find her missing at the marina when she was too late and called the cops to help search for her. But what can she do other than to confront her brother-in-law Clayton, a sleazy lawyer who helps the bad guys in court, as a prime suspect. But his house of cards is about to come crashing down at him like a domino effect when his hidden secrets came pouring out into the public. While the press focused their attention out on him, Holly looked for clues to discover more about her sister's disappearance and reflected to their emotional abusive childhood with their mother who played manipulative mind games with them for her studies, it might her take a look at her marriage with Mark and how he controlled her all the time. The closer the truth she would be to finding out if Vivian was dead or alive, the more she learned about more secrets from her youth to shed a dark light into their relationship with a startling ending you would never believe.

This book is a difficult one to review. It was okay, for the most part, but there were some things I did not like about it. I think it's a 2.5 star book, but rounding up generously.

During a superstorm, Holly gets a frantic call for help from her sister. Against her husband's wishes, Holly takes off towards her sister. All she finds is Vivian's car and a bracelet. So, she is left wondering what happened to her sister and since she used to be a journalist, (which is repeated to the reader way too many times), she decides to figure it out.

We also get Clay, Vivian's husband's point of view. This definitely helped in seeing what a nice guy he wasn't.

We also get backstory with Vivian and Holly and their mother and how awful she was to her children and why Vivian and Holly are the way they are.

But the thing that I disliked the most about this book was Mark, Holly's husband. He is a complete jerk and treats his wife horribly, over the top really. But, a lot of the things that happen in this book are over the top. The most suspenseful part was the beginning.

This is a new author for me. I love trying out new authors and was not disappointed with this one, It was a November First Read from Amazon and I loved it. Centers around a storm. Holly and Vivian are sisters. When Holly gets a frantic call from her sister to come and get her, no storm will stop her from doing so. But Vivian is not there and so the mystery begins.

Holly finds journals and clues and feels there is something sinister going on....and there is. Loved this page turner. Be sure to put this one on your list and watch out for those storms.

This book was not for me. It was chaotic mess of a story full of despicable people. Even the main heroine Holly is not very likeable and I was not able to find a connection to her or the story. The pace is slow and it almost was a DNF. But somehow I pushed through and it got a little bit better but the end ruined it again. It was so unrealistic and over the top and it failed to get me interested.

📖BOOK REVIEW📖 🌟🌟🌟
PUB DATE: Dec 1, 2021 / PAGES: 349

This story starts in Long Island, during a massive storm. Holly receives a frantic phone call from her sister. Vivian sounds scared and asks Holly to come to get her. After an argument with her controlling and very unlikeable husband, Holly heads out. But when she gets to the Marina, Vivian’s car is there, but Vivian isn’t.

The police and Vivian’s husband—Clay—aren’t investigating as seriously as Holly thinks they should be, so she takes it upon herself to look into Vivian’s disappearance. She puts herself and her family in danger when she finds info on her sister and Clay that is supposed to stay buried. The story also delves into Holly and Vivian’s childhood. They were raised by two alcoholic parents who were psychologists. Their mother used them as experimental subjects throughout their childhood.

This synopsis sounded so exciting! I wanted to love this book and it started so strong. When I lost interest, I put it aside and then had the opportunity to read it with an IG friend, as a buddy read. But that didn’t make the book any more exciting. I did stick with it because I wanted to find out how it ended. And I was rewarded with a more exciting ending. I seem to be in the minority, and I really can’t point at any specific area the story went wrong. So if it interests you, be sure to read other reviews!

Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for this ARC. This review is my honest opinion.

Okay.. so. Where to start..

The beginning started off strong. Holly gets a phone call from her scared and hysterical sister. Holly goes to pick her up and she’s not there, but her car is there. At this point, I’m into it. Holly starts investigating. I’m alongside her asking questions trying to figured out what happened to her sister, Vivian.

The middle is where it started petering off for me. There was just too much happening and not enough happening. We get Clay, Vivian’s husband’s POV. I did like that because I felt that we needed it to get the whole story. Clay is also a complete jackass and we find out some of his secrets and the bad decisions he’s made that brought us to this point.

The ending.. I could’ve given this book 3.5 ⭐️ if the ending was better. It was anticlimactic and happened too easily and quickly. I just wanted more.

The author tried to cram in too many things to this story and I think that ultimately ended up hurting it. There were too many plot twists, and some did not make sense while others did, but.. idk. It needed more focus.

None of the characters were likeable. The husbands were awful. Mark, Holly’s husband, needed to get throat punched. The way he talked to her.. oh honey. No no nooo. Clay wasn’t much better. But I can understand how both sisters ended up marrying total jerks. Their parents were abusive. The dad, not so much, but he didn’t stand up to their mom enough to actually help these girls. Their mom was awful and I couldn’t imagine having a mother like that and not growing up to be screwed up. Holly wasn’t so bad, but she was annoying and I really questioned some of her decisions and actions. I did like Vivian, but there wasn’t enough of her.

Overall, this was just an okay read for me. Do I recommend it? Hmm, not really. It doesn’t bring anything he’s to the genre and it was too all over the place. If a certain element wasn’t brought into this, it may have been more believable.

this book took me 10 days to read. It doesn’t usually take that long, and towards the end, I definitely skimmed over some sections of it.
It started out fast-paced, but then… somehow slowed and dragged on.
I did love the flashbacks into Holly and Vivian’s abusive childhood, but not abusive in the sense that you hear about on TV. No. Their mother was a mastermind, a sick mastermind. She was the ultimate manipulator, all in the name of “research”. I hated her character, BUT, she was written wonderfully if that makes any sense.

I don’t quite understand why the dual POV was Holly and Clay… I wish it had been Vivian’s POV instead of her shithead of a husband. That part didn’t make a ton of sense to me. I would have loved Vivian’s POV.

There were a few things that I just didn’t feel like were super believable, for one, the Bermuda PD didn’t even second guess Frankie’s death…? Just seemed odd that it was so quickly over and done with and Holly could go back to the mainland. I’m not sure that’s how those things are actually handled over there. I’m hoping not.
And then Giana… Clay had psychopathic tendencies. Give me a reason why he wouldn’t go to the ends of the earth in search of her? His only daughter? That didn’t make sense that he just.. let her go so easily. I thought he would put up more of a fight.

All in all, Holly and Vivian deserved way better and it was a decent ending in which they both were on their way to greener pastures. So to speak. After all the trauma they had endured.

Oh, and Mark can go fuck himself. His character pissed me off the most, I think.

I would have enjoyed this read if the emotional drama was less. The story begins with Vivian calling her sister Holly saying she needs help. When Holly drove to North Shore beach in a Hurricane, she finds Vivian’s car empty and her bracelet on the pavement.
The emotional babble that runs through this book with their mother who is a college professor doing studies to see how her daughters Vivian 17, and Holly 14 would react and what the initial outcome would be.
Some of the things Holly does searching for her sister, you asked yourself, why?

Into the Sound by Cara Reinard

Convoluted, confusing, and rather chaotic tale of a crazy call from an older sister saying she was in danger and to come immediately during the storm…and when the younger sister arrived only an empty car and a bracelet remained. From then on it was a sleuthing by Holly to find Vivian with flashbacks to their crushing childhood and strange parents then throw in their horrible relationships with husbands and some other tidbits that finally (I skimmed the middle) lead to a conclusion that may have ended with one or two characters coming out sort of okay or with the potential to be okay in the future.

I have to say this was NOT a book I enjoyed or invested time reading word for word but do have a feeling some will love it. I had high hopes reading the book description but the story did not work for me, I did not like the characters and the plot required suspending belief in more than one instance.

I typically enjoy family dramas—whether romance or mystery/suspense/thriller—especially when based around either a large family or sisters (as I had a large, sisters-only family growing up). Unfortunately, this book took too many wrong turns for me. The plot seems all over the place, with some odd twists that just made little sense for the characters or the larger story. Plot shouldn’t seem random or just use devices typical of a genre. The dialogue was terrible (as were some deep-characterization thoughts), not the way people actually talk or think… at least I hope they don’t. There isn’t a single likable character (maybe the missing sister… if we’d seen more of her), and the men seem to especially get the short end of the stick. The sisters’ husbands, in particular, are particularly awful. Especially Holly’s (the protagonist’s) husband. Goodness, some of the things he said to her!! For a domestic suspense, the initial suspense (the frightened phone call, discovering the sister missing) was the ONLY suspenseful part until after the 75% mark. So, not much of a suspense novel! For a bit, I felt I was just waiting for something to happen in the present storyline; I almost DNFed the book because of it. The soggy middle spends too much time on backstory and flitting between different points of view… pace killers in most books and certainly in this one... The ending felt anti-climactic… utterly too easy and unbelievable given the characters’ deep histories and present ways of being. By the way, the book does have some profanity, which I never like to read; I didn’t think it helped either tension or characterization. Not recommended.

I received a free copy of this book but that did not affect my review.

I received a arc fir a honest review . This is the second book
By this author , so good , thriller , thought provoking, cat and mouse games and parents who were off the Pavlov dogs scale. As the sisters were growing up they accumulated a lot
Of emotional scars from the mother who used them as test rats. The sisters remained close but
Oddly
They picked the same kinds of husbands. A frantic call to Holly from her sister Vivian . There is someone coming. When Holly arrives there is a empty car. Holly needs help
Nothing is what they say, and so many underlying secrets. Were is her sister? Enjoy

This was a Goodreads giveaway book, and the premise sounded very promising. However, I did not feel that it lived up to its expectations. The main character is overly head-strong in her evaluation that only SHE is capable of determining what happened to her sister (perhaps if she had shared more information with the police they could have done their job). She gets herself in trouble with everyone around her because she is so single-focused in her determination to discover the truth. There was no bonding with the MC at all, and I think the author tried too hard to give her faults that the reader would identify with (closet drinker, damaging parental upbringing).

The stereotypes of the husbands, the police and crime-family mob power are so cliché that I was ready to quit reading. REALLY? That was the best the author could do? The only likable character in the book is 'Archie' and he has a very small part and doesn't appear until late in the story line.

I needed to leave the book for a full 24 hours, and there was nothing compelling me to pick it back up again to find out how it ended, but I was obligated to do so. It felt like a book written 30 years ago, not one with present day standards in place. The author tries to bring it into the present with the online chat romance, but the conversation between the two characters is what you might expect if they were teenagers, not adults.

I would have rated this with only 1 star, but there were moments in the book where some spark of interest and originality shone through. I am not familiar with this author, but if this is an example of her work, I would not be looking for her earlier books on the shelves.

I enjoyed this. It's about two sisters, and one goes missing while the other tries to solve the mystery of what happened to her. It also talks about how they grew up, and it's the kind of whodunit where basically there are a ton of potential suspects. The characters are flawed and real, with real problems. I do kind of wish that their childhood would have been worse than it was, or that there was more actual suspense. I was just looking for a bit more badness, instead of the hint of it. Other than that, it was a good story.

This was my Amazon First Reads choice for November, and I honestly wish I’d chosen something else, but the synopsis (which was better written and also more thrilling than the book itself) pulled me in.

Cara Reinard was obviously going for a Gone Girl-esque deal here, but she missed the mark. The writing is just a mess. From the bad dialogue, the misogyny, abuse, and manipulation, the constant reminders that Holly was once upon a time a journalist (if you do a shot every time Holly mentions it, you’ll quickly become more drunk than she ever aspired to be), and the weird descriptions (her small ass fluttered like a butterfly) the book fell flat. It was a challenge to finish it, and I’ll be avoiding all books from the author from here on out.

I loved this character driven novel. It’s voicey, surprising as atmospheric. I really felt for Holly. She’s a complex character, emotionally layered in a way you don’t often see in thrillers. I also liked that the men in this novel got what they deserved. Well done! Thank you to author Cara Reinard, netgalley, and the publisher for the e-galley!!

But but but Bay Shore is off the bay, not the Sound. This is where my issues with the book started.

Into the Sound is a fast paced read, that will have your mind spinning within moments. It is dark, twisty, and the characters are not very likable. This book is all about deeply layered secrets, which go back a generation. You think your family is insane, think again. Holly and Vivian were brought up in a house where mind games were constantly played. Their mother was a psychology professor who thought her two daughters were the perfect guinea pigs. These two sisters made it out from under their mothers' thumb to become married to men who love to manipulate. They are selfish, they do what they want, and treat their wives horribly even when the world is crashing down around them.

Vivian disappears on the night of a superstorm. Holly makes it her mission to find her sister and to prove to the cops and everyone else that she is still alive. Holly is manic, makes bad choices, and you will be yelling at her to stop what she is doing, slowly back away, and get help. Talk about putting yourself into horrible situations. She is determined and lets nothing get in her way of finding her sister. But is she too late?

I was quickly sucked into the story. The characters are deeply flawed, and you want to see what else they have done or will do. The ending was a little lackluster for me, I wanted more after all of the running, racing, twists, turns and mind spinning you did to get there. Thank you to Cara Reinard, TLC Book Tours and Thomas and Mercer for this insane family thriller.
