Review for the entire series-
this was fairly short but intensely emotional. Midori’s desire to not be alone and the claustrophobia of her relationship and her life was extremely well written, and the conclusion of her finally mustering up the courage to live life on her own terms with maki, who also for once decided to not go with the flow was amazing. The art was definitely a highlight- the artstyle was stylised and there were plenty of full page panels that were absolutely gorgeous.

I absolutely loved the ending! It was the perfect way to conclude Maki and Midori's story.

NOTE: Sadly I don't know which chapters were in which volumes with how I read the series so for the sake of convenience here's a review of the story as a whole.

"Run Away with Me, Girl" is the story of two friends, Maki and Midori, reuniting after their high school graduations. The notable thing is about their relationship is how they interacted, which was more aligned with a romantic couple. Maki still holds onto her feelings for Midori but, when they graduated, Midori said it was time to grow up (heavily implying that being in love with a girl was a childish thing). A bit after they meet up again by coincidence and reconnect and reignite their feelings for one another.

Overall, I liked this series. I wouldn't say it's anything special story wise as it comes off a bit generic and straight forward to where it's going. Though it wasn't too deep with it's story or characters, it was an enjoyable read. There were a few threads that left untouched or not dug deep into the series, a major one regarding Maki's (and by extension, Midori's) sexuality. It doesn't bring up the deeper discussion but it works fine on it's own, though it is odd as there were seeds of a discussion like this happening very early on.

Despite this, the artwork is absolutely gorgeous. There's a softness and roundness to the characters and scenery that gives it a beautiful, relaxing quality. Even without the stellar watercolors for some versions of the cover, it is still beautiful and soothing to look at.

Wow, the ending was handled in a way more mature way than I expected. And it was a very nice surprise. I loved how we got a little something from all the characters and I love that they end up rising the kid together. And that the friend from the island is still a friend. I loved how she got into the story and delivered the ending.
Very nice manga! It felt very raw which I liked too.

Review for the whole series:

All in all this story is about the struggles of being queer in a heteronormative world and the messy nature of figuring it all out. There's some deeply flawed characters and I appreciated that - it's not easy dealing with internalized homophobia and leaving an abusive partner, let alone standing up for yourself as a woman who everyone sees as dumb and easy.

Maki doesn't have it easy either, she'd do anything to get her high-school sweetheart back and is willing to put up with a lot of shit in exchange for brief moments of happiness. Her being a doormat and going along with the cheating despite knowing Midori has a fiance to go home to is tough. She's being used, but I think the series does a good job at exploring the difficulties from both of their perspectives.

The fiance is a massive misogynist, we briefly get to see the world from his perspective and learn why he is the way he is without excusing any of his actions. He gets Midori pregnant against her will and she struggles a lot with the complicated feelings that come with her body changing and the uncertainty of the future. But what she fears most is being alone and plays dumb to avoid causing any friction.

(Also mentioning this here in case someone needs the warning: Abortion was at no point mentioned or considered, she does end up having that baby and shares custody with the father, though the details of their arrangement isn't specified)

The art style is a big highlight for me, I haven't seen a manga quite like this before and if I had to describe it I'd choose the words elegant and feminine.

cw: abusive relationship (physical and emotional), sexual content (not super explicit), nudity, cheating, homophobia, misogyny, forced pregnancy

Run away with me, Girl follows Maki, a lesbian in her late twenties who reconnects with her childhood love, Midori. Their relationship ended rather abruptly on graduation with Midori dismissing it as only a “phase” she had outgrown.

What makes this story so poignant is its human portrayal of loneliness and emptiness that queer individuals, lesbians in this case face. In a conservative society like Japan where lesbian relationships are frowned upon characters like Maki and Midori are left with two choices, both equally painful. They can either pretend, wear the mask and play the role perfectly to fit in or live in isolation, as Maki has done. This constant struggle is what makes their journey about healing.

By the end, Midori weary from her abusive marriage and tired of the emptiness, chooses a third path: she decides to live truly as herself. She finally chooses herself for the first time. And this time, she chooses Maki. This time, both of our characters instead of running away and going with the flow, they decides to face all of the hardships together, building a life that both of them only saw as a dream until now.

Me hizo llorar. No fue hasta el volumen 3 que vi la luz del final de túnel, a una Midori más sincera y aunque sentí miedo real al no verla enfrentarse a su prometido cuando él las encontró en el tren, al final demostró que puede hallar su felicidad y sueños con Maki

Darker than expected!!! I usually only dip into Yuri with lighter themes but I liked that this one pushed past that and grappled with more than just will-they-won’t-they sappy shallow stuff. Motherhood and loneliness and autonomy and being closeted all get looked at and while it’s not the DEEPEST narrative, it was refreshing and sweet and sad.
I’m a diehard fan of “run away with me” stories and keep trying to write them and this is a really good example. Can I not just be happy that two women are happy? ALSO THE SEA!!!!!!!

Anyway yeah. Unconventional but I liked it a lot

Overall, I think the main characters can only have built a healthy relationship (with each other and with their kid) after tons of emotional work on both their parts. The psychological depth the narrative has is mostly not too on the nose and the art is just consistently gorgeous. I'm still torn about the cheating, because it's more emotional than physical in a way that makes sense given the characters' dynamics and issues, while feeling like the narrative tries too hard to justify it. But I'm happy that the pregnant character got out before tying herself even closer to her asshole of a fiancé and I understand that she needed something to wake her up – her friend coming back into her life and her fiancé getting more violent. Definitely not an easy read but worth it imo.
