Cross your heart and hope to live.

I should leave them alone and be done with vampires. I finally have my mother back, I’m dating the perfect guy, and I’ve parted ways with Adrian Teresi.

But I have an opportunity to help the hunters and hopefully learn something that could save more humans. Not to mention, I need answers about the venom burning through my veins.

So I go back to The Alabaster Heart to strike another deal with the vampire prince. The game of cat and mouse that follows is expected, and maybe even a little fun, but nothing prepares me for the day that our games end—and the consequences begin.

“You don’t have to apologize to me.” His voice drifts through the darkness. I can barely etch out his figure, but he’s still sitting on the bed. “I used to have nightmares, too. There’s no shame in it.”
“What did you do to make them go away?”
“I became the nightmare.”

Vampire weekend was a success!
I was waiting for this sequel like my life depended on it and it mostly has to do with Nina Walker's writing.
I must admit this second book in the Vampire & Vices series wasn't as good as the first one, but it was packed with action and generous with the romance, nonetheless.
Eva is still a character I can't decide if I absolutely like or not, but she's a fun one, either way.
She also can't seem to not put herself in all sorts of trouble and embarrassing situations, which is something I'm always looking forward to when reading a book.
I wish we'll have more Adrian backstory in the third book and possibly a nice development of his and Eva's relationship.
Overall, Cruel Stakes was a fun read that reminds me of all those urban fantasy vampire novels I devoured when I was a teen.

Wow, I am so floored right now because this series has absolutely taken me over. It was all I could think about after finishing the first book in the series so I picked this book up immediately to get my next fix.

The cliffhanger at the end of this book has me salivating for the next one like a starving man. Walker can acutely plant the seeds of curiosity in her readers with building intrigue and expertly arranged plotting. From the start of this series, I have been jonesing for answers to all the questions that are posed in the story. The story flows perfectly and I am amazed at how fast the pages dwindle as I read. The twists and turns in the story were exciting and made me crave more.

I really love the characters in this series. Most of them have an air of mystery about them that makes the reader try and guess at their loyalties. Most of the characters live in a very gray area, making the reader love and hate them equally. I think that this quality makes the characters very realistic, which I love. The characters are flawed and so very real that it is easy for the reader to feel a connection to them. The characters jump off the page in a very distinct way.

I liked Eva's journey and character development in this book. Eva starts off playing both sides and that leads her to some very uncomfortable places. Her loyalties are tested and I think that a part of herself is tested as well throughout the course of the book. Eva is pretty alone in this book because there is no one that she can trust. She doesn't know who has been compromised or whose loyalties belong to whom. And she doesn't have the full story either so that makes things even more difficult for her. Adrian's character is as mysterious as ever in this book, though it does feel as though we get more of him than in the first book. His motivations are still a mystery, which makes the reader love and hate him at the same time. Adrian's character has a magnetism that permeates the story. I am so eager for the final book in this series so we can finally learn the truth about Adrian, his motivations, and his true feelings. I do love the side characters in this series. There are a few that I am very eager to know more about, like Sebastien and Tate. And in this book, we finally get to know Queen Brisa. Let's just say that things get interesting with all of the different dynamics at play.

The romance in this book is hard to explain without going into spoiler territory. Eva has some conflicting feelings about her love for Felix and her growing feelings and attraction for Adrian. It's all very complicated though so I'll leave it at that.

Overall, this is a book and a series that deserves to be hyped! I devoured this book in the blink of an eye. This series has fresh characters that are interesting and vibrant, a creative spin on vampires that will delight you, and plotting that will keep you on the edge of your seat and keep you hungering for more. I am going to be counting down the days until the release of the final book in this series!

I am devastated.

DEVASTATED!

I knew this book was going to be "high stakes" going in. I knew that Eva was in some serious trouble, and I KNEW that some serious sh*t was going to go down. I was NOT READY for what happens in Cruel Stakes. I was NOT ready for author Nina to rip my heart clean out of my chest and leave me begging for more.
And now I'm sitting here, book finished, with a massive book hangover that can only be resolved with the next installment. I'll be stitching my heart back together while I wait, ever so (im)patiently💔🥺

Absolutely incredible and amazing! I honestly did not think this book could have topped the first in the series but I can say with confidence that this truly exceeded my expectations. It was a wonderful story with such an unexpected ending, making me wish I had the third one ready to read. One thing for certain, I will be looking forward to the next book in this series

Omg what a rollercoaster! Cruel Stakes was such an amazing sequel! I think I like it more than the first book, which hardly ever happens! So many things happened in this book and it was so amazing! I absolutely love Adrian and can’t wait for more of him and Eva is such an awesome FMC! This book did make me cry, but it was so good! Still a little salty for the reason I cried though, haha. I really need book 3 now! That ending left me wanting so much more! I just want to know what is going to happen. I really recommend this series, I read in a day. Vampires, enemies to lovers, found family, mystery, need I say more!

Wow is this book bingeable! I’m so glad we got to see more of Adrian in this book, and I’m hoping for more of his backstory in book 3. Those little glimpses of him being vulnerable with Eva were just wonderful. I was a little sad we didn’t get more discussion of what Tate is, but I can see Nina is setting up for an epic finale. Overall this was super fun and perfect for those urban fantasy lovers out there! I could easily get lost in this world!

Cruel Stakes picks up where Blood Casino ends. Eva is at odds with what is happening and no longer wants to trust the vampires, especially Adrian Teresi. However, having been bitten, she is driven to find out more regarding her newly heightened senses. In the hope that this information will help with her position among the hunters, Eva once again strikes up a deal with none other than Adrian.

This story was a little less exciting than the first, but it drew me in none the less. There was more action and so much more romance in this book. The author focused a lot on the workings of the vampires giving us a glimpse into their minds. Eva is her usual rebellious self, torn between her long time crush on Felix and her growing attraction to Adrian.

This book shows us some rather negative sides of some of the characters and is filled with some unexpected twists. All this in the end ensures that the reader is in for a BIG shock thus justifying the title and everything that happens in Book 2. There are some unlikely friendships and bonds that form that the reader just wont see coming. This is what I liked most about the book, the elements of surprise which were very well executed!

I am truly excited for and looking forward to Book 3 which I am sure will take us on a big roller coaster ride if these two books are anything to go by!

I just finished reading the second book in the Vampires & Vices series, Cruel Stakes, by Nina Walker! And guess what 😁😁😁?!!! If you thought Book 1 was GOOD… wait until you read Book 2! 🥳🥳🥳 (FYI - there are no spoilers below!)

OK! So I LOVED 💜 TWO things about the start of this book! The first is that it kicks off right where Book 1 left off! 🥳 Anyone who knows me KNOWS I do not like 😡 a time-lapse after a cliffhanger!! So this was pretty GREAT because we got to dive right into what happens next 🙌🏻! And the second great thing is that we get Adrian’s POV! YESSSSSSSSSS! 🤩🥳🤩 And it is GOOD 👏🏻 . Not only do we get a hint at how old this Vamp 🧛 Prince 👑 is, we also get a glimpse into his turning and some insight in his messed up relationship with the Queen bee 🐝 . I actually thought it brilliant 💡 of the author to make sure we read his POV at the VERY beginning of the book because it really becomes quite significant for the ending of the book!! And I love that kind of symmetry that comes full circle ⭕️ baby! And speaking of endings… can we say TWIST 🌪 ?! What the heck people!!! Didn’t see that coming 😵! I feel like I need to go back and re-read the book like a detective 🔎 to see if I can find any clues! 😆😆😆

As for our girl, she is just as sassy and strong-minded as ever 🙌🏻! But she DEFINITELY has a few more dilemmas to overcome in this book. Her V-Card, which I won’t say if she loses or not 😉, plays a much more dominant role! And that line she adamantly keeps drawn between hunters and vamps…starts to blur! I was actually super excited that this book dealt with a whole new mystery in the plot! It kept the plotline fresh 💨 and held my interest (I’m infamous for being a DNF’er in the second book of a series... so this is a great accomplishment 🏅of an author for me!) There were some… 'oh dang 😱! … I can’t believe that just happened’ moments that actually caused me to msg my reading buddies saying “Did I really just read that?! 😮😮😮”

And what about the romance 💘 in this book? Does it get steamier?? Well, I can say one thing for certain …. it is clear this UF (Urban Fantasy) does not Fade-to-Black in that department! Woo hoo 👊🏻 ! I’m soooo not a fan of Fade-to-Black 🙄😆! So with this book, the series continues to be one where romance is the subplot and not the main plot. Don’t get me wrong though! There’s definitely chemistry with the HUNKY MMC who looks like Christian Grey (in my mind 😆,) snarks like Lucius Septimus (🔥🔥🔥,) and flies like Eric Northman (💜💜💜 !) But the steam 🔥 is more of a mist 🌬 and is PERFECT for those who love a UF that is light on the steam and heavy on the action 🤺!!!

This series still remains to be a great palette CLEANSER 🧼 , a lot of fun 🥳, and pretty original! Take it from this serial DNF’er… if I can stay interested in the second book of a series… then it must be pretty great 👏! Warning: THERE IS a cliffhanger at the end of this book! But honestly, it’s not too bad of a cliffhanger and nothing to keep someone from reading the book! Speaking of the next book, I am super excited to read Book 3 'Wicked Sun' this December 🙌🏻 !

So if you are looking for a new UF (or maybe looking to try one for the first time,) this series is definitely a good choice! And it’s free on KU!!! So roll that dice 🎲 baby and give it a go! You've got nothing to lose!

First off, I really did enjoy the premise of this series and was curious how the characters and storyline would develop in this book. I liked the last book, but I definitely thought it was missing something. I hoped this book would add some interest and character development to this story, but unfortunately it did not. I do think this author has talent, but I found this sequel really lacking.

My biggest complaint is that for the first 50% of the book, at least, it felt like the plot didn't move forward at all. Eva is still a vampire hunter (kind of - no vampire hunting is actually done) and is sort of figuring out her relationship with Felix. Adrian and Eva interact like twice, so his character stays at a complete standstill. Eva's relationship with her friend, Alya (?), is falling apart, but everything else basically stays the same. I don't feel any deeper connection to Eva or Adrian. I still know nothing about Adrian's past and their relationship hasn't progressed at all. The plot moved at a snail's pace. We also learn nothing about this new "demon energy" foe, and have really only one "run in" with them.

~Spoilers Ahead~

At about 80% while the plot is still barely inching forward, the "romance" speeds up by an absurd amount - Adrian and Eva are at Brisa's palace and are basically waiting to turn Eva into a vampire. Then the plan is to let Eva escape before she is fully a vampire (or something like that?). So then during a ball Adrian and Eva sneak off (to argue actually) and are suddenly having sex (Eva losing her virginity)???? I was wildly confused when this scene started to happen because Eva seemed to hate Adrian for being a vampire and was "keeping" her virginity - then all of a sudden they are acting like they are in love and having sex. She kept referencing her pull and connection to Adrian, but this was NEVER shown to the reader. Adrian and Eva interact barely a handful of times in this book before they are suddenly having sex. There was 0 relationship development or chemistry between these two, so this entire scened didn't remotely feel believable.

I think my issues stem from this book not really knowing what is it. It this a romance? I would say no because the relationship is so underdeveloped, I don't feel it. I thought this was going to be a romance with at least a little spice - but when they have sex it's not described at all. The scene is just Eva's thoughts about the whole thing. I understand if the author didn't want to write a smutty novel - but then I would suggest having the sex scenes fade into black and at least make the emotional side of the relationship strong and believable. In the absence of romance, I didn't find the plot moving forward in an interesting way (or moving forward at all). Partly because there is a massive amount of Eva's inner dialogue compared to things actually ~happening~ and also because there is was too much left unrevealed. Then the ending, while unpredictable, didn't make sense and ended up falling flat for me. I won't be continuing this particular series.

Cruel Stakes is the second book in the Vampires and Vices series, it was complicated, messy, and full of surprises. It was to die for, I loved it.

Eva doesn't make the best decisions. She's had to grow up quick because of her mom's gambling addiction and in turn that made her hate vampires to the point that she doesn't think reasonably. She knows the dangers, knows the risks but can't help herself which drives me bonkers. Things haven't gotten much better in this one, no I would say they are far worse. Eva isn't stupid but she keeps making these decisions and now she's in deep with the vamps, with Adrian. Taken big risks and let down her guard a little. Eva is also having problems in her personal life, her mom is still her mom, her best friend Ayla is going through something and things with Flix get complicated.

However Adrian is still present in her life, he and Eva have chemistry, there is something between them that both notice but don't necessarily like. There is something about Adrian that I like, maybe it's the whole dark prince, I hate my maker thing, maybe it's because he doesn't seem so monstrous. Either way, I like him but don't really trust him and after this book, I'm still as confused over his actions and what he truly intends.

Things between him and Eva get even more complicated, the snark between the two is still going but there is something just below the surface, some kind of tension that is driving them towards each other. At this point, I don't know what their relationship is. Adrian himself is complicated but I can see how he was once a good guy, a good human but being one of Brisa's princes has warped him. After his actions in Cruel Stakes, I'm wondering just what he's willing to do to end his maker?

Cruel Stakes should have been called High Stakes because Eva is immersed in the vampire world with travel, balls, elaborate gowns, trials, and so much more. Brisa is very prevalent in this book and no one knows what to expect from the cruel vampire queen but things are happening, vampires are dying, Leslie Tate is back and he's still a mystery and a danger. The supernatural is up to something and the only thing Eva knows for sure is that she can't trust him. After a shocking turn of events, a betrayal, and a hint of something on the horizon Eva's life will never be the same.

This review was originally published on Myth and Magic Book Club

Myth: 3.5/5

Eva is sent on quite the journey in book two of vampires and vices and we’re absolutely left on a cliffhanger needing to know what happens next. After the events of book one, Eva definitely knows she has a strong pull towards the vampire prince Adrien, but she also knows he is a vampire (her least favorite people). But as trouble brews in the hunter world, her personal life and vampire politics, Eva and Adrien are thrown into a pairing they can’t really refuse.

I enjoyed the writing in this book, I felt like there were multiple points where I was thinking something about a scene or character and then a sentence later Eva would think it. She definitely grew as a character through the first book’s events.

Magic: 3.5/5

I love and hate that we still have little to know information on the mysterious third type of creature in the world. Plenty of new hints and info dropped in this story, but see first sentence about cliffhanger!

Overall: 3.5/5

An exciting ride taking Eva from the New Orlean scenes we’re familiar with all the way to the Palace of Versailles. Eva definitely has a lot to figure out about the vampires and hunters while also trying to sort out her own complicated romantic feelings.

A 2nd in series that left me wanting more

Upper YA

The beginning of Cruel Stakes, second book in series, felt slower but was setting up the second half of the book, where the royal vampire mechanizations took off like a shot & the excitement began!
Long-time crush & new beau Felix & Eva's new relationship runs into some bumps in the road when Tate shows back up, causing a deadly new issue, and Eva makes a new deal with the sexy vampire Adrianos to keep the hunters safe.
Their new deal causes Eva to travel from known New Orleans to opulent Versailles in France, meeting the vampire queen Brisa. All is not as it appears, and Eva has to make some of the hardest decisions of her 19 years, while Eva's beliefs, heart, framily, and life are on the line. Who does she trust, who can she turn to when the chips are down?
Nina continues the story with intrigue, deception, extravagance, betrayal, and steam (with a sex scene that's more emotions & thoughts than graphic description.) So much happens towards the end, you'll find yourself re-reading just to see: "Did that just happen?!" Looking forward to Midnight Sun to get answers the cliffhanger left wide open.

My thanks to the author for providing me with an ARC of the book. All opinions expressed here are entirely my own. No review expected and no compensation was received.

This one was sooo good! I love how it doesn't have that cliche star-crossed lovers thing going. Eva feels so deeply and Nina has a way of writing that you feel everything right along with Eva; you feel her excitement, confusion, determination, and betrayal as she feels it. I also love that the heroine is so conflicted at times trying to figure out if she's being betrayed or protected because it adds a whole different layer of realism. I didn't think this could top the first book but it did. It's been really interesting to see how we get a new take on vampires but also see the old myths too. Nina does a fantastic job of blending them seamlessly together for beautiful world building. I can't wait to see what will be revealed about the non humans Eva might have discovered. And while I can't comprehend how book three could possibly top this one, I'm super excited to see if/how it happens now.

combined review for book one & two.

book one: 3.5 stars
book two: 3.25 stars

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked up this book but I can honestly say I didn’t put it down. It’s the definition of a trashy, paranormal romance and I was here for it.
This is the kind of book you need to read it you’re in a reading slump!

- the characters were memorable enough and I liked the dynamic between our two heroes. the slow burn romance is honestly done so well, I am literally begging for this both to realise their feelings for each other.
- the setting is interesting and I think the casino idea is really unique. I liked how we had relatable conflicts in this book such as her mums gambling addiction.
- I really like nina’s writing and I would definitely read more from her as a solo author.
- the biggest issue with these books are: they are trashy, but trashy is addicting.

I will definitely be reading book three when it’s out!

Cruel Stakes
By Nina Walker
Book 2 in the Vampires & Vices series
Rating: 4/5

Always happy to get my hands on an ARC of one of Nina Walker’s books (although I did PREORDER the book). I especially was curious to see what happened after the first book and was not disappointed. Great chemistry between the main characters. Interesting mythology and world building. Ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. Can’t wait for the next book.

PG-13 There is a sex scene but it is not graphic.

Highly recommend if you enjoy vampire books with some romance, mystery and action.

My thanks to the author for providing me with an ARC of the book. All opinions expressed here are entirely my own. No positive review was expected and no compensation received.

I was really excited to get back into this world as I do like Evangeline as a character, she does grow more in this and tries to decide more of what she wants in life. I hope in the next book we see her just by herself and grow into who she is supposed to be!

There are a lot of decisions she still needs to make and I did feel a few stories lines did feel empty as the start was great but then it was more of a jumble.

I liked seeing more about the vampires and there world especially learning more about Andrei, I feel like there is a love hate relationship with this character.

I'm hoping in future books we do get more of what else is in this world as I think the vampire side has for sure been covered.

I'm definitely intrigued and ready for more!

I cannot believe the twists that blew my dang mind with this book! I thought I knew what was going to happen, only to be blown away with a curveball I didn't see coming! I can't say enough good thing about this book or this series! I keep thinking it can't get better only for it to do just that. I devoured Cruel Stakes within a couple of hours and now I'm left with one helluva book hangover. And am dying to know what the heck is in store now for Eva, for Adrian, for every dang thing I thought I knew, and really didn't, but NEED to know now! Wicked Sun can't get here fast enough!

So addicting! I love how Nina paces her books. She keeps a great momentum so that you never get bored. And oh my! What twists and turns in this book! Such a great sequel to Blood Casino. Eva faces new trials in Cruel Stakes and does her best to make it through impossible situations. Seriously though, if I were in her shoes I would have given up in defeat asking time ago. But she keeps on moving forward trying to do her best to survive and create good outcomes for those she loves. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

Great surprise

I am not sure what I was expecting when I started this e-arc because I enjoyed the first, but wasn't completely blown away. I can honestly say this sequel greatly exceeded my expectations.

Just wow.

The ending has me staring at my phone (where I read this all tonight) just repeatedly thinking "did that really happen?!" When it picked up, man did it pick up. I couldn't stop.

Now I am awaiting the sequel like crap what is going to happen next?!?!?

Lately, I feel like it's been a book hangover after book hangover! All of these amazing authors and stories. Cruel Stakes is another of those books that will leave you wanting more.

It's always a good story when you can go through and feel what the main character is feeling. I love Eva's character and the interactions between her and Adrian.

The world building is always awesome in Nina's book, too!

I am so excited for book 3!

I couldn't guess the ending YaY!!!!

This book is a fantastic read. I couldn't put it down! When you have read as much as I have its hard to not guess where the story line is going. Not with these books, they keep you guessing until the last page. A must read!!! I can't wait for December to read the next book.
