This story was first published in March 2020 as part of the When the Smoke Clears fundraising anthology for Australian Bushfire Relief. No changes have been made to the story.
Kiwi firefighter Paul 'Chalky' White, doesn't hesitate to volunteer when fires decimate the Australian bush. He expects to find heartache and devastation. What he doesn’t expect to find is a tiny, abandoned kitten and a sexy vet in the middle of nowhere.
Dr Hayden Wheeler only has a few minutes with the soot-stained firefighter and is left with a memory of piercing blue eyes and regret for not getting his number.
A chance encounter in Auckland months later has the two men reuniting. Will they be able to build something on the embers of their first meeting or will it all turn to ash?
Cinders is a 10’500 short story set in the Kiwi Guys world.
DNF @36% I’m sure it’s good enough but at the start one of the MC invites the other out for a drink after everything is done and the other MC agrees. Next chapter is two months later and the MC has moved onto a different area and never went back to get the other’s phone number or anything but they just happen to see either other again at the bar. 🙈 Sure he was busy but why bother with the invite if he wasn’t gonna put in effort to follow through? At least the other MC didn’t even recognize him at first and had also been too busy to I guess wonder why he never went back ? 🤷🏻♀️

I read this as part of a great anthology, When the Smoke Clears. The New Zealand author is a favorite of mine and Cinders, the rescue kitten, adds just that touch of adorable and a reason for the two guys, firefighter Chalky and veterinarian Hayden, to meet in the midst of the Australian wildfires.
It's short, so their connection and lead to the bedroom is quick, but I enjoyed this brief, steamy romance.
