Fashion designer Thérèse D’Alesandro has recently moved into Westhead Manor with daughter Felicia and stepson Marco. Joining forces with neighbour Ella Benedict, she is about to open a bridal boutique at Ella’s exclusive wedding venue Lawns at Little Court. Charlotte Kendrick is currently in a relationship with rock star Christian Rosetti. But when the fame and fortune is going to his head and his behaviour is unacceptable, Charlotte ends things with him. Meanwhile Charlotte enjoys working whenever she can with her mother Jenny in Lawns at Little Court, an exclusive wedding venue Jenny runs together with Ella Benedict. When Thérèse D’Alesandro moves in the Manor next to Ella’s, a business opportunity rises, as Thérèse is a former fashion model and now is a famous dress designer. Together with Thérèse have come her daughter Felicia and stepson Marco. Marco will manage his father’s European restaurant chain and with his looks and charms he can get every woman he wants. But no matter how much Charlotte annoys him, he cannot manage to stay far away from her, their chemistry is too hard to ignore. Yet with so many players in the same game, all having their own and only interest at heart, who will be the final winner?
Ok, first things first, in this story there are many characters, so initially I had just printed out the list of people that you can find at the beginning of the book. And every now and then I had to take a glimpse at who was who again. But the more I got into the story, the less I needed that list and eventually I didn’t need it at all!
I have to say, this story grabbed my attention and I had to have a reading marathon, because putting it away was just impossible!
There are many subplots in this book, but the main story was about Charlotte and Marco. These two just lovely people are falling for each other, but the interference of other people is making it hard for them to enjoy their togetherness. The main villain is Thérèse… I don’t understand her feelings towards Marco and why she wants to use him as a pawn to her own benefit… her actions are just terrible and the fact she isn’t afraid to use innocent victims like Rossana made me truly despise Thérèse…
But our couple has also people who want them to be together. Marco’s sister Felicia show how good a bond between brother and sister can be, by doing whatever she can so that her brother is happy. And Charlotte’s cousin Lucy is evolving in the story from a selfish girl to a young woman understanding her own potential. And she sees the love between Charlotte and Marco and helps out however she can to bring them back together.
The twists and turns just keep appearing and just when you think that NOW all is resolved for the better, another curveball has been thrown, crashing everything once again. But beside all the drama, there are so many sweet moments too! Whenever Charlotte and Marco are enjoying a blissful moment together, I found myself smiling because of the tenderness. All the characters are going through an evolution in this story. Not only Charlotte and Marco grow into trusting each other, but also Lucy shows a matureness through the story. Unfortunately some people evolve in a worse way… Thérèse’s scruples are taking a terrible height, taking Rossana with her in a world of deceit.
While reading I hoped that the author had just a wicked imagination and that she didn’t inspire her characters on people she knew, because if they truly had to go through all whatever happened to the characters, well, I wouldn’t want to be in their shoes!
I found it a gripping story about finding love, but also losing love. There is hope sparking through the pages, and people are able to redeem themselves. But sometimes redemption is not enough and a sad ending is written in the starts thanks to the hands of other people. Loving someone is sometimes not enough, if it’s true love, will it not all end in a happily ever after after all? And will all the heartbreak (both for the characters as for the readers) be worth of it anyway?
This author has managed to slowly climb higher and higher on the list of my favourite authors! So I surely hope to read more from her!!!
