Dave Waller is happy with his life. He manages the local library and loves nothing better than story time with the small children.
David D’Angelo is head of the local coven. They have just taken a contact to capture David Weller for stealing one hundred million pounds from the Chinese and Russian Cartels.
In a case of mistaken identity, the vampires capture Dave Waller. It is at their first meeting that David discovers Dave is his longed for mate.
With threats coming from the cartels, mercenaries and hired assassins, can David and his coven keep Dave alive long enough to prove his innocence?
This is my first time reading this author. I’m not sure if their writing style is this way but it was kind of confusing. Every other paragraph was someone else’s point of view which made it kind of confusing, because I’ve never read anything like that. with that being said I did enjoy the story what I didn’t enjoy were the fade to black sex scenes but I guess that’s how this author writes.
Premises for this book sounded amazing, but the execution was a pretty flat and one-dimensional for me.
That being said if it was shorter I probably would have ended up finishing it. Unfortunately though, this book is the start to a series and you can tell the author felt like they had to introduce all the key players in the first book, which is completely unnecessary. They also decided to insert the foundation for 2 other romances into the first half of this book(Ivan and Jamie + Seth and Gio, could have been more in the 2nd half), also completely unnecessary.
In the end Bruno and Thomaz were my favorite character, and they aren’t even the main character, they are the dog and the cook...
Honestly if I had rated it would have been under 3 stars. I do love it when newer writers of my favorite genre appear though, so I wish the author the best and can’t wait to see how they grow as a writer.
On the face of it, the Blurb seemed like it would be a winner, but I'd DNF-ed and returned it to KU after the first chapter.
It's one thing to have your MCs share a name, but then to introduce another with the mistaken identity trope and an almost identical name was a disaster.
On top of that, the head-hopping in the same chapters, even the same paragraphs almost, between multiple POVs, not just the two MCs, was unforgivable for me.
I don't need to give myself a migraine trying to work out who is speaking.
I forgot how annoying the beginning of this book is...but once I got past that portion I was able to settle in and enjoy (mostly) the rest of the story. Firstly, yes...the author named both MCs David. This made things unnecessarily confusing. I don't care that one went by Dave...don't do that! Also, the fact that all of the mercenaries were successfully confused by the baddie (also named David...ugh!) trying to frame our MC because his last name is similar was ridiculous. The tiniest bit of research should have revealed what had happened. But no. Our heroes are stupid enough to fall for that but luckily, MC Dave "seems too innocent" so they figured out what had happened?? What?? Ridiculous. The more I reflect on what I just read, the more I am wondering why did I actually finish it?
No plot spoilers because there isn't much of a plot anyway. No potential triggers. The characterisation is abysmal. Some characters are completely superfluous and absolutely nothing to the book (what was the point of Max??) There is nothing, apart from the name vampire, that says anything about vampire traits. I mean, nothing. Everyone is every one else's sudden best friend just because Dave is 'innocent ' the characters are one dimensional gay men, complete with sitting on laps and sweethearting every five minutes. The whole fated mate angle is astonishingly boring in this book mostly because of innocent Dave being human just falls right into it within 24 hours. Yeah, ok. I would buy into that if the plotline kept my interest but the dialogue is done to death. Dave tells David what the vet said, then tells Stephan, and then Thomaz. It's like that right throughout the book. The author mentions in her 'about he's section that she writes longhand in various books, all I can say is she needs to check the book before sending to print because the three Dave/David/David thing got totally mixed up several times. Did the author not engage the service of a proof reader or editor? The sheer volume of incorrect punctuation is overwhelming and so bloody irritating to have a thousand commas in one paragraph, the mind stutters trying to read the book. There is no swearing and no sex whatsoever. The book feels as if a fourteen year old penned it during lunch. I don't have the words to describe just how bad the book actually is.
I was so amused by the clever premise of this that I not only bought it immediately, but also began reading it directly (which is rare for me, as my TBR pile is overwhelming and misdirects me at times. On one hand, this is definitely a plenty of fun, and clearly the creation of a world, with a plot that clearly took time to think through, and a cast of characters that I already want to learn more about. The dialogue is often charming, banter-y, but missing the quintessentially British bite that reminds one that this takes place in a small English village - the voice is so mid-Atlantic that I frequently forgot that it was set in England, until a small word or phrase would remind me. This might not be the case, obviously, but having grown up in the British Isles I am picky about this. The thing I found most disconcerting, however, was the challenge I think the author faced to make space for emotional character and relationship development amidst a lot of characters to introduce and a plot that moves along speedily (though I love the dog and the relationship everyone develops with him - that, being unspoken and easy, of course, makes sense!). But particularly between the protagonists, there is a nod to the immense speed with which they are thrown into each others lives, but never really any time give to discuss this or explore their reactions. I am (as a lover of vampire romance), very willing to accept the idea of a mating bond that turns on an instinctual attraction and trust, but when this is a culturally new idea to one party (and a surprise to the other), it seems like a little more time to adjust, discussion of this, would make sense. Ultimately, I think, I was sorry that David and Dave, scenes of the two of them together, especially alone, didn't get more time, and so never really felt like the heart of the book (pun intended). Which led to scenes in which the former swore to protect the latter read as odd, or as if they should sound odd to Dave, to his family, or to David's men. Ultimately I liked and appreciated this - writing a book is a huge feat, and to have a good idea in terms of plot, characters, dialogue and mix in paranormal is amazing. I am already looking forward to what I hope will be a series. Hut I do hope the characters get to spend a little more time talking and with their feelings in future volumes. (and yes, I am a therapist *grin*)
I love vampire books and this was just one to add to the list. A great beginning to a series that I am sure will be good. Worth the time spent to read it.
I have to be honest. I really struggled to finish this book. The synopsis sounded intriguing and I wanted to like this book but it was tough not to DNF.
Instalove is usually a trope I can get behind but it fell flat this time because the two MCs had no real, meaningful interaction before they were already thinking they were in love. It was just ‘Oops, my buddy kidnapped you. Turns out you’re my fated mate so I guess I must be in love with you now.’ The human MC was shockingly just as quick to fall in love. It definitely came across as tell not show because there didn’t seem to be any real chemistry between the two.
One of my biggest struggles was the constant switching of POVs. Multiple POVs can make for a richer, more immersive read, but here, they were switching every paragraph at times. And given that the MCs are David and Dave it was often hard to tell who’s POV I was in. Not to mention the switching to side characters POVs. I understand some of that was to set up future books with those characters as the MCs but it was too much jumping around. There’s a scene when the POV is that of the dog.
I’m interested enough in the world building that I think I’ll attempt the next book and hope it gets better.
The writing was so... odd. No indication of the POV switches, it just suddenly happens in the same chapter. For some novels it works, but I fear this doesn't feel as structured with that format.
Idk, the writing and interactions between the characters feel stilted most times, and it's not like they were all speaking formally with each other. Also a bit of a pet peeve of mine (and because we're all human, it doesn't bother me too much. I do it mistype at times as well) is when the author forgets to put the commas and other typo-related stuff. It's not too bad in this novel but it could use some work.
I'll give the 2nd novel a chance, but for now... I understand why this only has an average of 4.06 stars, LMAO. I can't say it's the worst thing I've read, but I've definitely read a lot better than this.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
While there is much to like about this book, there are issues. And while I usually feel that an interesting storyline overcomes a lot.... First, its got good world building. Very sweet characters. The secondaries are interesting as well. And like a 1950's sitcom, all the action takes place away from the readers view. Except for the kissing. And there is a lot of kissing. Considering that the MC, Dave, a librarian, has been setup as a fall guy and has killers after him, it's amazingly low angst. And David, the vampire, a tough, serious character, is a gooey marshmallow for his mate. The Dave/David thing can get your brain spinning. It is a tad annoying. Typos, spelling (maybe despatch is the English way of spelling dispatch) and name mixups get to be a bit much. But the whole book is redeemed by Bruno, a Labrador retriever. The most intelligent dog alive. Also a good conversationalist. The author has set the stage for more books in this coven. If there is more Bruno, I'm in.
The premise of this book is interesting, I'm a paranormal kick so this one was supposedly a no-brainer. I finished the book, it was a good read. However, the whole thing felt flat. The first page was interesting, so it had me reading further.. but I wish there was more character development and that they had appeared more multi-dimensional? I couldn't even really feel the chemistry between Dave and David. They're mates and bam! Mated! Bam! Together for life. Something is intrinsically missing, specially for fated mates and vampire romance. I wished there was a mating scene, it would have given details as to how did David bonded and mated Dave? There was a bite and no description of how it came to be. Vampires are supposed to be sensual... and all the intimate scenes on this one are fade to black or fade to nothing. This book is definitely a fluffy read, no angst, there's a few action scenes and it's Bruno who takes the win in this book, for me.
The premise of the story sounded cool. But it was too PG for my tastes. Things happen very quickly and when there is a problem, the solution happens within a page. Very low angst and suspense. I wish the story was more drawn out with more developed action scenes.
Also, what is with the name David!? The innocent main character is named David, as is the hacker he is mistaken for. That makes sense, but the main vampire is David too! Why? What is the point? It only makes the story more confusing. Innocent David goes by Dave, but this minor change really does not help when reading about vampire David with human Dave. It was distracting and took away from the tale. It would have been so easy to fix this by giving the vampire a different name. So frustrating.
It's rare I can't finish a book but I just could not take Dave, David and David anymore! Why did the author feel the need to give the main characters the same name! I've read other reviews that say its felt like a child wrote it and I absolutely agree there is a childish quality to the writing that makes it uncomfortable to read especially when they are magically naked. You don't need sex to make a story but I HATE it when they include a scene where it starts to get spicy and then say a while later.... Just don't allude to it at all if you're not going to write about it! No character depth at all which I also found infuriating and constant changes in who's point of view it was from was absolutely infuriating. The story had so much potential but the execution fell short sorry!
It was bad, but I kept reading it anyway. There were good bones here and the story was pretty interesting. I think with a little work this could actually be a pretty good book. The problem wax everything was just too fast. Problems were settled with the speed of light, fights over before they started, friendships formed with "hello" and a look... There just needed to be more to this. More conversation and more detail. We were told a lot and shown almost nothing. Plus it just ends super randomly without all the loose ends tied up.
I want this book to be rewritten top to bottom. I genuinely think it could be good. All in all this is just an "eh" book. Interesting enough to keep reading but definitely not good enough to buy. Thank goodness for KU.
The title and the book cover hint at menace and a dark tale, nope! Not at the beginning anyway, the conversations between Dave and David in those first pages are so funny, had me chuckling. Who knew vampires can not only be deadly, ferocious, and intimidating, but the next minute they can chorus an 'awww' in unison at a sweet moment, be still my heart. Dave is a breath of fresh air that is quickly endeared by all members of the Coven. David, AKA Prince David, and Bossman, immediately sees Dave is his Mate, the Mate he has been waiting to find for many years. I just loved this story, lots of humour, intrigue, and deadly battles involving vampires, werewolves, and shifters. The way it ended hints that things are not quite over and maybe there is another book coming, I hope you.
As stories go it was okay but severely lacking details in the characters development and ties. The normal romance and steamy scenes were glossed over and that's fine but in doing so parts were lost. For example Dave has a mating mark but it's never explained what that is. Is it a bite scar or a hickey? What does it do? Does it symbolize a psychic connection or is it super sensitive to the touch and provide sexual stimulation? Stuff like that is missing. My internal narration was all done in the same voice as well, no distinction between the characters personalities. Plus Dave, David and David are your main characters names. That at times was confusing in keeping everything straight. I struggled to want to keep reading until the end.
Okay I just couldn’t finish this. It was too confusing to follow. I’m not a fan of paragraph to paragraph changing of a character viewpoint. That is confusing enough as it is with there being no real distinction of when we are reading a different characters thoughts until they mention names etc. Then we come to perhaps the biggest issue here. We already have a premise of mistaken identity (which seems like it should be verified better before running off to kill a target), but why in the world would the two main characters also have the same name? Why not give one a real nickname instead of ‘Dave for David’? That made it just too hard to follow along for me. This entire concept was weird to me and made it too difficult to get into the story.
David Weller. Dave Waller. One a computer hacker and thief. The other, a librarian, innocent to all the scary things in the world. When Dave Waller is kidnapped and brought to the local vampire coven’s house, Dave’s life will never be the same. In just a few hours / days time, he finds out a hit has been put out on him, mistaken identity, vampires are real and he’s the fated mate of the Vampire Prince. A brilliant book. And so much fun to read. Dave is beautifully written with such wit and humor, I found myself giggling a lot. The banter between Dave and the vampire David was awesome. Add in both sets of parents! Omg! Full out laughter. Loved this book so much. HEA was so good. So good.
The pov is back and forth between David and Dave and mixed with other side characters. I'm confused at first but eventually I got used to it. Lol.
This book is freakin entertaining and fun to read. No sex scene, no biggie! Got me hooked since the 1st chapter until the very end. Dave is one strange fella, one of a kind. No one can compare to him with his adorableness, how he grasp his newfound world about preternatural world with grace. Lol. Why I got the feeling that Dave's dog, Bruno is a shifter. Somehow I was patiently waiting for Bruno to shift and suddenly make an appearance as human. Lol.
Would love to read more of this author's book related to David's coven members <3 .
Ok so did I like this book? Yes and not no just I don’t know. I finished it which I didn’t think I would at first. It’s so confusing not knowing who’s talking as it changes pretty much with every paragraph. At one point even the dogs point of view. I found the story line good but it all felt very brief and rushed in a way but not in others. One word to summarise is confusing. It left a lot open so I’m presuming there will be a follow up. I’m not sure I will read it tho.
This book is good. It seem as if it was written for teenagers as it was very easy to read. Dave is a librarian working at his dream job as the head of the local library. Someone frames him for stealing 100 million euros and everyone wants to collect the bounty placed on his head. The vamps get to him first. Of course Dave insists on his innocence. He meets the coven leader, David, and they discover that they are mates. So now David has to keep Dave alive long enough to prove his innocence and find the real culprit.
Adventure Awaits This is a great adventure/bodyguard story paranormal style. It has a little bit of everything fated mates, all the things that go bump in the night, best friends, mans best friend, parents crashing the party, the list goes on. This book is a romance in the regency sense with lots of love but extreme low heat. So, if you're in it for the story, the snarky cast, and action you will love it.
No, just, No! Why would you name your 2MC's: David. To top that off the plot is a case of mistaken identity which means you have 3 Davids from the first chapter. This was so unimaginative and boring not to mention confusing and annoying as fuck with everyone named David. The characters are one dimensional, no development and the dialog is simplistic and silly at times. This author is a no for me🙅🏻♀️🙅🏻♀️
This book has a lot going on, enough for several books. Unfortunately that isn’t a good thing. It jumps from plot hook to plot hook, picking up and abandoning them as time goes on. Each element is tossed out there in a lazy, haphazard function. If the writer were to trim down everything and focus on a linear progression where each action and scene leads to the next this would be an interesting book. As it is, it’s hard to read.
We are also sparred the sex scenes, so thank you. What I didn't like is there meeting and mating is way to fast. The others found there mates but at least they have time to get to know the other before jumping in. I do like the characters and will continue this series. David did a great job at protecting Dave from the bad guys. I loved Bruno and his relationship with Dave and the others. He is more human like then dog. Sweetest puppy ever!!
I thought this was a really fun story. I enjoyed the plot, and there was plenty of action. The Dave/David thing was a little confusing sometimes, but even the other characters joked about it. It seems like there will be many more stories to come in this series since everyone was finding their mates. I loved the reference to Seven Brides for Seven Brothers! So thank you for that!
I really liked the premise, BUT I don't have enough brain power for this book. One MM romance reading/writing struggle is how some authors have more trouble with keeping the number of He/Him pronouns down in a sentence so not to confuse a scene. Well, this author decided to throw-in with making the two MCs names' David and Dave. Yeah, game over.
I really enjoyed this book. I think it is the first of many. I am looking forward to reading the new book when it comes out. Quite a few future plotlines to be explored. The integration of the paranormal into mundane society is well handled. This book was interesting without lag going in the middle.
What the fuck even am I trying to read here Couldn’t the author freaking give her MC’s different names, at the very least? Fucking hell…
Also please focus on one POV per chapter. The very first chapter (which is as far as I could possibly go) has the author jumping POVs between the two main characters (both named David lmao), sometimes in the midst of a paragraph and it is confusing as hell.
Loved this story. I enjoyed all the characters. It's a coven but also a family that gets shook up by a human. Dave(not David) is funny and very engaging. The vampires and other paranormals don't know what hit them when Dave enters their lives. I definitely recommend this book if you are looking for something light with a HEA ending.
