She enjoyed life as a demon’s pet. Until the cries of an innocent tore her world asunder…

Emma Case is freaking out. Being surrounded by monsters is risky enough without breaking the rules, but when the soft-hearted girl hears a pup in distress, she can’t resist trespassing on forbidden ground. And after discovering the unfortunate creature is a wolf-shifter, she’s stunned when the child’s pack accuses her of the crime and abducts her for interrogation.

Tortured for information she doesn’t have, Emma pleads desperately for her handsome tormenter to believe her. Yet as the naïve young woman tumbles deeper into the realm of supernatural intrigue, she unexpectedly manifests frightening powers she has no idea how to control.

Will Emma’s hidden heritage prove a blessing or a bane?

Cursed Demon is the second standalone book in the character-driven Creatures of the Otherworld urban fantasy series. If you like sassy heroines, laugh-out-loud humour, and white-knuckle thrills, then you’ll love Brogan Thomas’s action-packed tale.

Brogan lives in Ireland with her husband and their eleven furry children: five furry minions of darkness (aka the cats), four hellhounds (the dogs), and two traditional unicorns (fat, hairy Irish cobs).

In 2019 she embraced her craziness by writing about the imaginary people that live in her head. Her first love is her husband followed by her number-one favourite furry child Bob the cob, then reading. When not reading or writing, she can be found knee-deep in horse poo and fur while blissfully ignoring all adult responsibilities.

I loved this. It was such a fun read with some intense violence and suffering that somehow didn't hit me in the feels as much as I would expect. Which meant I could enjoy it without crying. But the heroine deserved better and we never got to see her with trusted family/friends the way she deserved. She was on the so good she may be unreal side.

This is definitely more a fantasy with romantic elements than a romance. I was a little nervous about the romance actually because the love interest tortures and betrays the heroine. But they are fated mates as well. I HATE body betrayal when someone caves to being with someone because fate made their body respond and connect to this awful person.

I wish we had gotten more of the growth part of this book, but I was satisfied that she walked away from him for 18 years. I would have liked her to tell him what's what and have him grovel and show he's changed a little longer... but it's there, enough. Plus, it seems like this series is interconnected so we may see him more later.

Very enjoyable and fun. Even with some dark themes.

Content warnings
- abuse and torture, leading to long-lasting physical and emotional harm
- fated mates with a guy who did some of that abuse and torture
- no other partners which is nice... but I would have loved more redemption time

Update after audiobook:

So pleased that I've finally gotten around to a revisit of Cursed Demon, and I'm finding the story just as intriguing the second time through, especially when delivered by such a fantastically skilled narrator.

There is no doubt in my mind that Poppy Royana should always, always, always bring Thomas' stories to life. I don't think anyone else could quite nail the unintentionally witty and unquestionably sarcastic heroines that she weaves into her stories.

Original review:

I immediately preordered Cursed Demon after having read Cursed Wolf the first time, having fallen so in love with this world Brogan Thomas created and the sassy, fierce and altogether wild characters she dropped inside it. After devouring Wolf in a reread, and then getting lost in the audiobook... to say I was ready for this sequel would be an understatement.

"The truth is, I occupy a strange space between being a damsel in distress and knowing enough about the evils of this world to realise my vulnerability. I am doomed."

I loved it. Much like I loved Forrest's awkwardness and growth throughout her own book, Emma was a force onto herself. I loved her journey, and the way the author wove the storyline to that of Cursed Wolf was both a surprise and a wonderful delight as each new facet unfolded.

I have to admit... warming up to John took a little bit for me. I absolutely, fire-spitting-mad hated him in the first book and desperately wanted him to be tossed into a large pit. Of fire. I still somewhat feel that way, heh, but he was given his due and the more we learned about his circumstances made me hate him just a little less. A little.

The book was thrilling, right from the start - something this author seems to develop so well in both of her novels thusfar. Though I may have been able to guess at certain directions for the story, the way those elements came about were both thrilling and had such an impact that I was constantly on the edge of my seat.

I was honored to be given an advanced copy from the author, though it's on preorder for release, and am leaving my review voluntarily. Though this book *could* be read without having read the first, there would be certain moments that would be lost on the reader, so I'd highly recommend checking out Cursed Wolf first.

My Thoughts:
Most of what I am going to say about this book, I already have said in my review of the first book, Cursed Wolf. Both books have great story telling quality, wonderful world building, and characters to love! In this book the author has fully embraced the angels and demons theme but it looks like she is going to spin it slightly differently from the religious tropes which is an interesting twist!

My question is, why is the Big Ben in the cover when they were nowhere near London at all!?

The plot is a bit formulaic, but I don't care! I got a wonderful reading time out of this book!

I still like Poppy Royana's narration though this time her voice has morphed into Emma's. I also agree with her interpretation of the book and best of all, her sassy narration!

Empirical Evaluation:
Story telling quality = 5
Character development = 4.5
Story itself = 4.5
Writing Style = 5
Ending = 4
World building = 5
Cover art = 4.5
Pace = 4.5
Plot = 4
Narration = 5

Overall Rating: 5 out of 5

So I said I was going to eventually get back to this series but not jump right into it. I opened another, wildly popular book by wildly popular authors whose work I consider must-read, only to discover within the first chapter that I really wanted to be reading more of this torture porn. So I read this.

The author is quite good. This series is slow burn romance, one couple per book, rather clean in terms of sealing the deal (it's not even fade to black, we get the difficulty of them getting together, not the stuff that comes once they do), and it's pure torture porn. The world is inordinately misogynistic and it's an excellent set up for every female in it to need to be rescued because they are being horrifyingly victimized. Of course this leaves a LOT of room for the growth of the characters.

I figure I will get bored with it eventually, but it's not happened yet so I'm going to roll with it.

As for this book - I didn't like the hero of this book in the first book, I finished this book hating him altogether. I hope he dies in a later installment. No forgiveness from me. He is irredeemable as far as I am concerned. I think the author had to make him a "soul mate" for an excuse to redeem the irredeemable. It didn't make me respect the heroine for falling for him, either.

Four stars for Emma, one star for John. Sorry not sorry. A bit of a spoiler: He’s a jerk in the first book and I don’t feel that he was really redeemed in this book. No true “oh my god I’m a jerk” moment, no true change, no real apologies. Oh and spoiler- he never ever gets better. John will always be an a$$hole with no heart who doesn’t take care of victims or believe them, which SO doesn’t match up with Emma. I don’t understand what the author was thinking. Maybeeee I could have softened to him if he got better in any of the following books but nope. Still a tool.

Another great book

Can't put my finger on why these books are great, brogan has a way of making me feel like I know the characters, and love how they grow and become better. Love the plot, the twists and turns, and the ideas brogan comes up with are wonderful, Emma goes from a shy frightened girl to a sassy heroine, she's amazing, funny too. Hope that all makes sense, but safe to say I love the books

Characters: Rating: 💜💜💜💜
Emma. Series: Yes
John. Length: 300 Pages

I LOVE Emma but John really pisses me off. Emma is a kind soul on a cruel world where women are bought and sold like it's nothing. Especially humans. Emma's life after helping a wolf pup in need, goes into a tailspin. John is an asshat who tortures, on multiple occasions, when all she did was save his sister. At her own risk.

My opinion:
This story is about a woman who overcomes a host of overwhelming obstacles and gets revenge the best way she can. By helping those in need. She learns the hard lesson that you really can't trust anyone. It's about learning how to live and how to forgive. The author writes an interesting little eirld that sucks you in. I really couldn't put it down. I found myself staying up at night to finish reading, I really should have been sleeping since I had to work in the morning, but I had to find our what happened next. I definitely recommebd reading. Again, these books can be read as stand ones but I would recommend reading them in order as they do start coinciding with each other and the characters will start connecting with each other.

Emma knows she’s not pure human but has no idea what else she is. After being sold to a demon at age 5 she spends her time training and riding horses. But when she stumbles across an imprisoned shifter pup (Forrest from book 1) that she helps rescue.
No one seems to believe that she had nothing to do with Forrest’s capture and she is brutally tortured by the Hellhound John.
After being released her life is a mess but all she wants to do is live it alone and trouble free. That naturally doesn’t happen.
Although I must admit the attraction between Emma and John after his treatment of her bothers/confuses me, it works well in the book.
To no one’s surprise everyone seems to be after her as she discovers more about herself and how to be safe.
This was an enjoyable book set in an interesting world with interesting characters and character interactions. There is snarky dialogue, violence, romance and a good story.
Although this is a series the books are stand alone with characters from previous books being involved.

She did it again!

This story was just as enjoyable as the frst one! Totally worth the time it took(takes) to read. Dont rush through it, but you just can't help diving into this world and RUNNING through it. i didn't want to leave. This story explains so much about John and why he was a totaly a$$%^#% to poor Forrest. If you havent read Forrest's story, do yourself a favor and read it. Believe me, you won't be disappointed!

Cursed Demon is a thrilling urban fantasy, action-packed, unpredictable, and exciting. The storyline is engaging, refreshing, and addictive. Brogan Thomas is brilliant; she is creative with an incredible imagination. Her world-building is phenomenal, packed with all types of supernatural components. The characters are well-developed, definitely appealing, and fascinating.

Poppy Royana did a stellar job with the narration; she portrayed the characters' personalities and captured the intensity of the scenes. Overall, Cursed Demon is well-written with a quality plot and narration, one I'll highly recommend.

I enjoy a strong female character I just wish she didn’t Cary so much guilt when she hurt someone. Like they evil girl! Kill them 😂 that annoyed me. I much preferred Forrest attitude but I know everyone can’t be the same. It’s like catholic guilt lol she was too nice

Fantastic Reading

Brogan you are now my favorite author. I can't read your books fast enough. I rarely find an author that writes in a way that holds me on the edge of the seat thru the entire book. Keep writing and I'll keep reading.

Sweet&Scary

O.k. this book was as good as the first. I in my old age, just had to read the second one book just to see and read for myself if this author could deliver. She did. This book had some scary scenes, but made up for it in the next few pages by something happening to Emma, that made her smile.I particularly liked the scene in the barn when she goes up to her "Irish Cob". If you have read the authors " Bio" you know she has the horses in her personal life.Lucky her. Any way nice touch! I loved it. I'm reading the rest of the series. Hands down you are my favorite author. I know the third book will be just as good. Thank you for having such a delightful imagination.😉

I thought that Forrest's story was exceptional but Brogan Thomas has surpassed it with Emma and John's story. The scenes were rich, the storyline was excellent and the characters were amazing. I enjoyed every page and couldn't put it down. I can't wait to see where she takes us next. I was given an ARC and am voluntarily reviewing it.

Intriguing

Intriguing story, I enjoyed how characters from the first book, Cursed Wolf, are interwoven into the second. The characters are varied and interesting the plot very creative. A pleasure to read and I'm looking forward to more!
My one negative is there should be a lesson in how to use (too), be careful when editing for small mistakes.

Cursed Demon is a stand-alone urban fantasy story; part of the Creatures of the Underworld series. This is a first read for this author and I loved the writing style and world-building. Emma was a great character, and the plot was full of surprises.

Really enjoyed the characters in both books so far. Love the fact that stories are standalone but linked slightly. Great world that is being revealed.

This is the 2nd book in an urban fantasy/paranormal romance series that I read back-to-back. It's billed as a stand-alone, but the three books are intertwined (and there is at least a 4th book on the way.) Each book focuses on a different heroine, and each finds love by the end, but that's not the majority of the book. The world is one where shifters, vampires, witches, angels, demons and other fantasy creatures have seemingly always existed and dominated/interbred with humans, but otherwise, it's just like our world, with some sociological twists. It's also set in Great Britain. The key feature of this culture is male dominance and control of females, and that culture is rotten to the core. Women feel victimized and powerless most of the time. The series is mostly about changing that controlling, abusive culture to a healthy one. I really like the emotional intelligence of this author. She portrays interactions between men and women through an insightful lenses.

This book is about a magically null human who rescues the child wolf from book one, and turns out to not be so human after all, but not before being horrifyingly tortured by her soul mate, the brother of the child wolf. It jump starts her discovering her own history and personal power, uncovering her demonity, and inspiring her to a life of helping those who can't help themselves. Decades later, she and her soul mate get past their impossibly rocky start.
