This was heartbreaking and the writing is amazing.
The only reason I’m not giving this 5 stars is that I feel like we spent so much time on the parents’ backstory and I would’ve loved seeing more about Hamnet’s relationship with other members of his family, I feel like we truly got the connection between him and Judith down and the love Agnes had for him as well but didn’t really dive that deep on his relationship with his dad and Susanna, it still hurt and you can still clearly see how his death was a disruptive event for their lives, but I was missing a bit more on their relationships there.
There were so many moments that broke me though, and I can’t wait to watch the movie (looks like Chloé Zhao really captured the atmosphere that Maggie O’Farrell created with her beautiful prose and I feel like Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal were born to play these roles)
Although the writing style made the book very readable and easy to follow even with the shifts of time, the study guide's exploration of characters and themes added to my appreciation. Liked the essay questions. Food for thought.
This marked my introduction to historical fiction. As someone who strictly reads the book before seeing the movie, Absolutely no regrets—the narrative style is wonderfully compelling, and I foresee myself diving much deeper into this genre
