The idea of peeking behind the glamorous and bloody scenes of the Colosseum at its peak is magnificent. All these grand-scale "spectacles" required immense logistics and organization, and the "participants" often aimed to spectacularly part with their lives (though not always).
However, the great weakness lies in the characters. Although in theory they possess all the characteristics of that world, they are actually safe spectators and—to my amazement—bald puritans and downright corporate office types. Such figures belong in the cotton candy of slow-burn chick lit, not in the depths of the arena.
Marcus doesn't think like an ancient gladiator—he thinks like a Project Manager chasing deadlines for the grand opening of a site. Althea has the mindset of a chaste marketing director or a chief accountant on the verge of burnout. And the entire plot is just cozy chick lit with a little bit of ancient action.
