I'm marking this as finished even though only 28 out of 47 chapters are currently (2.6.2020) translated.

I started this while in need of a light read since I'm spending my days doing little else but studying, and it was such a good idea, I'm only mad that I found it when it's still not fully translated but I am more than willing to wait.

The premise is simple: Wei Yanzi is a third rate actor who accidentally falls into the ship that is Wei Yanzi x Gu Yiliang, that is himself x his adversary, a good-looking and actually-good-at-acting second rate actor. When the two have to work on a production together, Wei Yanzi is on the front line of all the fluff that Gu Yiliang, intentionally or not, throws his way, and he revels in it.

The author obviously knows fandom and shipping (and RPS, more on that later) very well and knows how to use it effectively for their audience. The potential for fluff and misunderstandings and the gay panic that Wei Yanzi inevitably goes through (because he's so straight and only enjoys his ship in a theoretical way, right?) is huge, and so well used.

While obviously I'm reading a translation (and from what I can judge it's a really good one) I think the writing style is absolutely hilarious and 100% fits this type of story. I cannot count the amount of times I laughed out loud and the times I was rolling on my bed because the fluff was really too much (not unlike the MC did himself). I also love that we get the LI's point of view (in the form of diary), something I haven't seen done in the other danmei I've read (but I'm sure it's common enough, I'm still a newbie).

If you've never read a Chinese novel and are not familiar with some of the conventions of Chinese fandom, you will probably be a little confused by a few things, and the writing will also seem unconventional to you if you've always only read in English or your own language. I definitely couldn't catch 100% of the references and jokes but I can tell that by spending almost one year in the English-speaking side of Chinese fandoms I was aware of most things that were going on. However I also feel that if you've never read a Chinese webnovel this can be a safe and easy place to start, if you don't mind the fact that it's ongoing.

I want to make a final note because while I've been in fandoms for a while I've never been (and am quite against) RPF/RPS (real person fiction/shipping), as I believe it is something not only rooted in the fetishization of mlm relationships (another form of homophobia) but it can also ruin actors/idols' lives.
Of course when I read this novel I do it through my own mental filter and view the in-world RPS that the author portrays as a way of engaging critically with real life RPS fandoms (in a similar way in which Scum Villain engages with webnovel fandoms), although I'm not aware of the personal views on RPS of the author. This is not me looking for or professing purity when it comes to fandom and shipping, especially when I am not part of the cultural environment the novel was created for, this is just me expressing my personal view on the core matter of this webnovel, because I know there are others like me who might find it hypocritical of me to read this when I'm so against RPS (if you know me from twitter), but as this novel is structured (that is, the main character shipping himself with someone), the RPS element is just a light-hearted and funny premise to what is a cute romance with lots of potential for tropes and trope-subversion.

This is so hilarious, I kept giggling out loud while reading. And I loved the author’s writing style so much! The rhythm and the cadence are such a joy to read. Also kudos to BlackboxTL for such an excellent translation. Too bad they didn’t finish it, and, while I’m grateful for the other tl, it was more like an edited mtl which makes it hard to follow the story.

And apparently there’s only so much fluff I can take, cause towards the ending, I felt things began to drag. Fortunately it picked up again with the “climax”. Overall, a very enjoyable & quick read.

objectively? this book had zero plot but do i care?? absolutely not. wei yanzi and gu yiliang had a single brain cell that they passed back and forth, and the misunderstands were outrageously hilarious. this danmei is now my new comfort read because it made me feel so giddy and warm inside 🥺 niangzi is rio!!!

This is just the perfect palate cleanser for me. Nothing serious and not too shabby, just the perfect amount of fluff and silliness.

I absolutely adored Gu Yiliang and Wei Yanzi, they're both two different people but also both charming characters. Their personalities are so genuine and silly, it makes you have some kind of wishful thinking. I definitely enjoyed reading both their internal dilemmas and precious thoughts.

I don't have much to say since I don't read that much fluff but this was definitely a nice read. And not gonna lie, I was giggling and honestly enjoyed the ride. I believe everyone should give this book a try.

I am dead. I have died. The fluff overload has killed me.

I picked up the manhua adaptation a few days ago and fell in love with the humor and ridiculousness of the plot and characters so badly that I had the overwhelming urge to track down and read the novel, because I couldn't sit there and WAIT for volume two. So I did track down and read the whole novel, over the course of two days. And I regret nothing.

This novel is a DELIGHT. It is so ridiculous while also being downright adorable, and there is so much I love about it. I love Wei Yanzi's narration and commentary and general fan behavior. I love Gu Yiliang accidentally being perfect boyfriend material. I love the entire depiction of the shipping fans because while I'm not a fan of real person shipping, I do love how it was portrayed absolutely perfectly and accurately. I love all of PEPA's wordplay and references to songs and dramas and characters and history -- it really added so much to the text and made Wei Yanzi's narration feel that much more real and authentic.

One thing I will note though -- if you're wondering if you should read the novel or the manhua, I would recommend the manhua. I definitely don't think the novel is bad or that reading both hurts, especially since the novel is so short, but this novel just screams manhua adaptation. Most of the scenes are dialogue and thoughts with little description, so the manhua really helps add detail and life to the world and characters. Also, the humor translates REALLY well into a comic format. So definitely recommend checking it out and supporting the author & artist now that we have an official translation of the manhua!

Comencé a leer esta novela, principalmente porque quise sacarme la duda de si es buena o no (me yacía en medio del limbo de los que si le gustaron y los que no). Por lo que, después de concluir, daré a conocer mi punto.

La comedia romántica (que de por si, soy fan) fue precisa, me sacó una sonrisa y chillé por lo lindos que eran a veces. Por lo que cumplieron. Pero sentí dos cositas, que era la exageración (en momentos) y los malentendidos (que crecían en vez de resolverse) 😮‍💨 así que eso, equivale a dos estrellas. YYYY en cuanto a los personajes, lastimosamente, no simpaticé con ninguno de los protagonistas (¡COSA INCREÍBLE!) pero eso no quiere decir que no me gustaran, me dieron sus momentos dulces, alegres y sus pequeños transfondos, pero nada más. Por otro lado, el ritmo de la novela, se dio de una manera tan extraña, que ni siquiera me di cuenta sobre su "progreso" hasta que Wei Yanzi soltó que Gu Yiliang le "gustaba". Así que, medía estrella.

Realmente no lo sé, sentí algo curioso con esta novela. 😞

To be entirely fair, the plot and premise aren't anything particularly original, but what really makes this story is:
a) the author does a great job of incorporating shipping fandom into the story
b) it's absolutely HILARIOUS.

Aside from that, I really love the way the author lovingly walked the line of both using standard shippy fic tropes while also inverting/subverting some of them in a fun (and often funny) way. It never feels like the author is trying to mock shippers, just gently poke fun.

In terms of writing, I feel like as a web novel, it's pretty solid. There are a few typos and the fandom thread feels a little unfinished at the end (although it may be the version that I read), but since I assume webnovels have all the guardrails of fanfiction, I really can't hold it against this story.

And more importantly, it was just /very enjoyable/. The main character talks in gifs and script format and makes constant pop culture references. The boyfriend character is charming and adorably dorky, and also more likable than your average cardboard cutout character trope. The misunderstandings are silly but understandable, and more importantly the story never turns them into melodrama.

If you're looking for a cute gay romcom (focus on the comedy) with some funny fandom references, this is the webnovel for you!

A couple warnings:
- There are a LOT of references and jokes in this novel. You'll need a lot of familiarity with Chinese popular culture (everything from old folk songs from your grandma's era, to pop songs from the aughts, to government slogans, to internet slang) to understand every joke. I still found it funny despite missing at least 15-25% of the references, but hopefully any English translation will help provide context for these.
- It's also more enjoyable if you know anything about shipping fandom, particularly Chinese shipping fandom (which is a bit different). I think a general understanding of shipping fandom is enough to get it, but just know when they talk about weibo metatext it's like twitter hashtags, and when they talk about wechat group chats, it's kind of like a discord server.

Incredibly cute, silly, charming, and fun. I had an absolute blast. It went on an extended hiatus at some point around 70 chapters and I finally sat down to finish it tonight. Absolutely adore it.

The novel is about a ship CP in the entertainment industry that turned real. The main character sailed his own ship with his adversary and it was quite an interesting plot. The novel was written in a different approach, much like reading a diary and the characters’ inner voices and reactions were hilarious. It was purely comedic with no secondhand embarrassment.

The story started strong. I couldn’t stop laughing, and I couldn’t stop reading as well. The first thing I did as soon as I opened my eyes, was to continue off where I stopped before my consciousness drifted. The characters tended to jump to conclusions which was a blessing in disguise for them. If it weren’t for their assumptions, their relationship might not have progressed into a romantic one. It was truly an entertaining read.

Halfway through the novel though, I got tired of the same repetitive puns and reactions. When I reached the end of the English translation, I realized the fan translation was still ongoing. So I read the last two chapters in Chinese raw. Unsurprisingly, the raw was as hilarious as it was from the start. I can’t entirely say if it is because the nuances were lost in translation, or simply because too much one thing makes it bland. It was an amusing ending to read, especially the last chapter where everything was revealed; but it all ended abruptly! I’m still looking for that one extra just for my own peace of mind.

Although the head was good and the tail was acceptable, the filling was just unfulfilling. The middle parts were just meh. The novel itself didn’t show smut scenes as well, so it was unclear who’s the shou and who’s the gong. I only knew which was which from the novel’s description. Overall, it was just average, probably because I have read too much danmei. But I can see how the novel can be a comfort read for others. I can also see myself rereading it in the future just for laughs.

PS. I couldn’t find that one extra and was only able to read the main story. It isn’t available in the Changpei raw as well. I’ll wait for the English fan translation to post it.

Honestamente, no sé si mi calificación se deba a mi poca inclinación por el mentado fluff —es increíble la cantidad de veces que este libro repite dicha palabra—, a que tal vez mis gustos literarios estén evolucionando o a que simplemente soy una amargada. El rating de casi 5 ☆ en NU me dejó asombrada, por decir poco.

Mi defensa se divide en dos argumentos muy sencillos:
1. Uno realmente no sabe cuándo la atracción entre los protagonistas pasa a convertirse en algo más fuerte. La novela finalizó antes de que estos sentimientos pudiesen profundizarse. Sentí que Wei Yanzi y Gu Yiliang quedaron en el limbo.
2. La narración. Sé que es una novela de comedia, pero Dios, hay momentos y hay momentos. Jamás me había dado tanta pena ajena una escena de smut. El estilo que en un principio me hacía reír terminó irritándome. Yo solo quería que la novela se acabara.

Definitivamente, es una historia que se disfruta más en formato de manhua. Todo va demasiado rápido aquí. ¿Que si la recomendaría? Es un buen caso de una novela que no es para tomarse muy serio; así que, si quieres leer algo de esta clase, adelante.

Basically the entire plot:


I love this series so much! This had me belly laughing so many times. It's about two actors who are supposedly rivals but one of them becomes very invested in their ship and its fanbase (the gift that keeps on giving) and it's honestly just a fun time. 😩👌✨

The Rivals in Question
May I present to you Wei Yanzi, "newbie actor who sailed his own ship so hard that he discovered his true sexuality" and Gu Yiliang, "a skilled actor who loves writing diary entries and smoked his way out of straightness with 3 cigarettes." That's literally what it says in the very first chapter of the comic. I'm not making this up! 😭



Wei Yanzi is a perpetual mood. He's so funny and... painfully relatable in the most embarrassing way because I too lose my brain cells and become foolishly unhinged after scrolling through fanmedia of my favorite pairings.



Then we have Gu Yiliang who is just the sweetest!! Their dynamic makes me swoon, weep, wheeze, choke while laughing, [ insert relatable consequence of binge-reading a romantic webtoon/webnovel about two of the most adorable fictional characters to ever not exist here ].



Someone recommended this to me when I was having a bad week and it immediately brought back all the joy in my life. No, I'm serious. I owe them my entire life and probably my kidney if they asked for it. It's so good, I still smile every time I reread any of its chapters. ❤️

So so so funny. It’s a light-hearted romantic comedy that’s a quick read and pretty brainless.
The premises is pretty simple - Wei Yanzi (our MC) is an actor under the same company as Gu Yiliang (ML), they are aware of each other, but they don’t really know each other.
Their fandoms and “fans” seem to hate each other/put them against each other, as a result Wei Yanzi is tired of this non existent “drama” on social media, which leads him to deep dive and end up indulging in Niangzi (Wei Yanzi x Gu Yiliang ship name - by their shippers), which are a minority amongst their fans.

As actors, due to circumstances, they end up working on a drama together, and plot ensues.

It’s really funny, it’s absolute nonsense and comedic gold. It’s a deep dive into RPF/RPS (real person fiction, real person shipping) and fandom culture. If you’re into celebrities/idols, imagine them finding out about you shipping them (and them shipping it as well???) it’s as funny as it sounds like.

No angst, just misunderstandings and good comedy here.

Comencé la novela después de leer el manhua así que no sé qué tan justa pueda ser la reseña y es inevitable que los compare. Creo que la historia funciona mucho mejor en su adaptación, no solo por el arte hermoso, sino por como fluye y como es narrada.

Es la misma historia, pero una me gusto y la otra no tanto, ¿por qué? En lo personal, pienso que se debe a la narración en primera persona (de la cual ciertamente no soy fan), por lo que si a ti te gusta esta forma de narrar o no te molesta, creo que la puedes disfrutar sin problemas a diferencia mía.

Fuera de eso es una historia llena de fluff y malentendidos graciosos. Para quienes estan cansados de tanto angt.

It's not a novel with a big plot, or anguish, or script twists, but it has something, something that makes you feel good.
A love story based on a misunderstanding.
A talented actor surrounded by the comments of the fans who treat him as his son and those who ridicule him, accusing him of wanting to steal the resources of his adversary; however one day he finds another type of fan, the CP and not just any one, no, between him and his adversary.
The MC finds a place of peace among the fanfics where he and his adversary are the protagonists, knowing that everything is in the minds of his beloved fans.
Of course, one day he meets the ML in a shoot where they recorded together and between misunderstandings they begin to develop a relationship.
Only, this relationship may not be on the same page, nor place, nor galaxy for both protagonists. Each with his own idea and thoughts about what's happening they decide to get closer.
It is hilarious to see the situations from the point of view of the MC and then read what the ML writes in its diary about this same situation. As the protagonist is posing a romance or how this will affect his fans or as they will see it while, his "adversary" is dragged to the typical clichés of the BL following a completely different route.
I really had a lot of fun with this story, without OP characters or paragraphs describing the perfection of the protagonist. Just a romance story between a second-rate actor and a clueless actor.

The humor is the best part of this very short, 47 chapters, BL story! The pink bubbles romance between the main and lead characters is the second best reason to read this. The author covered well the roller coaster of emotions of having a crush even before a relationship is established. That makes the writing relatable.

I am familiar with fandoms, ships (fans pair off their favorite celebrities in relationships) and their prevalence in the Asian entertainment industry. So, I had no issues understanding the entertainment environment in this story. Some knowledge of this is needed before reading.

The writing style is choppy and without a lot of depth into the settings and backgrounds of secondary character. But, the title clearly states it’s a ship and the focus of the story is building the ship without many chapters to complete this process. Don’t expect award winning content. This is strictly entertainment that makes the reader literally laugh out loud while cheering the couple. It is a quick light read with some NSFW paragraphs. Recommended reading.

The MC is hilarious, his thoughts are just full of twist and turn, his act is also no better, you can't predict what's his next move

The ML is just as much as loser as the MC, boy excel in flirting department yet got muddlehead when he has to take an act. His diary's entry are another amusing train of thought, which make these two match perfectly fine

If you ever had those disgusting lovey dovey couple, that's they are. Feeding each other because they want to up each other better, putting each other make up because they also want to treat the other well. They're probably that also argue with "i love you, I love you more, no I love you the most and so on"

Also their intimate scene... Have u ever read smut and laugh because it's hilarious as much as it's cute, I'm not even sure if its sexy

Quyển truyện vui, không có drama máu chó. Khi đọc thì không cần suy nghĩ sâu sa gì hết. Cứ để mạch truyện dẫn dắt mình theo con đường tình yêu ngọt lịm của hai bạn trẻ thui. Đồng thời chuyện có rất nhiều thuật ngữ fangirl và ship CP rất nhiều (mình rất thích chủ đề này =)) tại vì mình cũng là một con fangirl và ship CP) tuy nhiên thay vì vui vẻ và tình tiết truyện bình bình, mình ước gì câu chuyện có nhiều pha máu chó, drama, ngược luyến tàn tâm hơn nữa =)))) nếu thế thì không còn gì bằng. Nói chung là ai mới tập tễnh đọc đam, hoặc chán đời thì nên sở hữu sách, chỉ để cuốn bản thân vào chế độ đọc và lâu lâu phải bật cười vì những hiểu lầm tai hại giữa 2 anh diễn viên tưởng lệch pha nhưng lại ăn ý không tưởng này thôi.

I finished this in two days, it was hilarious! There were so many funny misunderstandings and priceless one liners. I literally roared with laughter multiple times. It's short, sweet and funny, would definitely buy a physical copy to reread!

Summary: MC is a third tier actor who has been pitted against a second tier actor (ML) from his same agency. MC is aware that his fans always take his side no matter what and the ML's fans always blame him for everything and the CP/ship fans always find a way to find romance in everything they do. The MC and ML are in the same movie and the MC goes down a CP rabbit hole and realizes he likes to read about all the fluff. Misunderstandings begin when the MC thinks the ML catches him watching a fan edited MV of the two of them and soon real fluff ensues.

I Ship My Adversary x Me follows Wei Yanzi, a C-list actor with "the face of an idol and the acting skills of a brick", and his adversary, B-list actor Gu Yiliang whose acting skills and looks are both amazing. The two actors belong to the same company and debuted at the same time, leading to their fans developing a fierce rivalry. Wei Yanzi comes across a section of fandom that - rather than indulging in fighting and character assassination - imagines him and his adversary as lovers. Among the Niangzi Army, there are only encouraging words, cute headcanons, and some stories too NSFW to contemplate. He gets drawn into creating fanservice moments for these shippers in order to keep the good vibes going, and in the process, accidentally starts shipping himself with his adversary.

I had such a fun time reading this. The plot is pretty straightforward and employs a dual POV sparingly but to great effect. The miscommunications and misunderstandings make for a great comedy of errors. Wei Yanzi is a himbo to the highest degree and I love him for it. Meanwhile, Gu Yiliang has a cooler head on his shoulders but still jumps to conclusions due to his affection for Wei Yanzi.

I loved the story's portrayal of online fan communities and all the good and bad behaviour associated with them. Having been in fandom myself for a long time, the fan behaviour felt very recognisable and realistic. The author has obviously spent some time in online fandom. The story itself read like a fic, in all the best ways, such as how it both uses and pokes fun at tropes that often crop up in fic.

A trope subversion that I enjoyed was that the first time they have sex is bad. Gu Yiliang, who seeming has everything going for him, is bad in bed! I thought that was a cute detail and not what you usually see in stories like this one. He's not had sex with a man before, so obviously can't be expected to do things perfectly the first time, but he doesn't really improve much either, at least with oral. But Wei Yanzi likes him so much that he doesn't mind letting him (painfully) keeping practising. They match each other's freak.

In summary, while there's not a whole lot of substance in this story, I view that as a selling point rather than a mark against it. It's a fun romcom with plenty of fandom and pop culture references.
