'An utterly gripping and suspenseful novel that will have you turning the pages long into the night! Fans of The Mother-In-Law, Lies Lies Lies, and The Babysitter will love this heart-racing read.'
I live in Buckinghamshire with my husband and three grown-up children where I write psychological thrillers for HQDigital/HarperCollins and romantic comedy novels published by Bookouture.
Over the years I've been a secretary/bookkeeper, a wedding photographer, a pub manager, I've worked in a supermarket, a newsagent's and as a librarian - all good for story ideas.
I now write full-time and when I'm not writing, I read a lot, enjoy walking - which is good for plot-wrangling and ideas - photography, watching Netflix, baking and eating cakes. And then more walking to work off the cakes.
Another one sit- oh god I cannot feel my legs- my bladder is about to burst- I feed myself with Chardonnay during my entire read and now book-gover- I think I should grovel to reach the bathroom or could I call Uber to go there- maybe I request the driver just park his car and carry me to the bathroom and give him 5 stars, he will accept to carry me reading!
I entertained a lot during my read and as I try to gather my wits after my intense book-gover experience, I highly recommend this book who looks for something fast pacing, smart with shocking delightful twists!
There are two narrators: Liv ( Olivia) works as nanny, hating her life, trying to avenge her brother’s death, planning her great scheme to be hired by Pemberton family! She thinks Sophy is the one who ruined her entire life and now it’s time for her to pay for it!
Sophy Pemberton is new, struggling mom, trying so hard to cope with motherhood, tired, exhausted, stressful. When she meets with Liv who offers to help her raise her kid as their new employee, she feels so relieved! She thinks she didn’t find only a nanny, she also finds a real confidante! Think again Sophy! Something really goes in your household and somebody plays tricking mind games with you. Who could be the culprit? There is not only Liv to blame on! There are too many suspects confuse the hell of us! Which one of them turn Sophy’s life so miserable instead of herself?
From the beginning I’m on team Sophy. I easily understand her frustration, lack of her coping skills even though she tries so hard to be efficient mother. On the other hand: I hate the guts of Liv and I want to use her my own punching bag. I found her feelings about deceased brother way too much exaggerating!
The conclusion and several twists of the book were witty, unexpected!
Overall: it’s such a great popcorn ( or cheese platter and wine reading- do not try to read it at home with empty stomach just like I did) reading! It’s riveting, exciting, high tension, arm biter, teeth clenching thriller!
Giving my four entertaining stars and jumping to another mystery sooner!
Special thanks to NetGalley and HQ Digital for sharing this digital reviewer copy with me in exchange my honest thoughts.
3.5 stars A good psychological thriller that’ keeps you invested from the beginning to the end, the characters were interesting and nanny gets revenge on her employer after they did something bad to her.
Enjoyed this but am over the revenge trope can’t authors think up something different.
This is the story of two women, both struggling for different reasons. Liv Granger has never recovered from her brothers death years ago and is seeking revenge. Sophy Pemberton is struggling to cope with new motherhood. Liv offers to nanny to help Sophy with baby’s Finn. The story is told in alternating points of view.
This is an entertaining easy read. I like the alternating perspectives which works well and they interconnect smoothly. The characterisation is a strong element. You feel sorry for Sophy who is exhausted, bone tired and is clearly not coping though you appreciate there’s more going on as someone is playing mind games and there are several possible candidates which makes it intriguing. Liv is harder to work out, she’s so driven by her feelings surrounding brother Ben and this leads to some very questionable actions. However, she does redeem herself before it’s too late. The entitled wealthy women of the St Albans area are well depicted with all their condescension and Sophy’s mother in law Elizabeth would almost certainly win the mother in law from hell award. The premise is good and the plot unfolds at a good pace. There are moments of suspense and tension especially towards the conclusion. Some of the outcomes are easy to predict others less so.
Overall, an entertaining and well written psychological thriller that is easy to read.
With thanks to NetGalley and HQ, HQ Digital for the arc in return for an honest review.
THE PERFECT NANNY is a psychological thriller told from dual perspectives—that of Liv Grainger, woman who holds a grudge against Sophie Edwards, who she believes is responsible for her brother’s suicide back when he was in his teens. Despite Liv’s friends and family telling her she needs to let her anger go, she hasn’t been able to move on and formulates a revenge plot, stalking Sophie, and getting close to her, eventually becoming her nanny. Sophie is struggling with post-partum depression and has an overbearing mother-in-law. She is eager for help with her son. These two are sort of a train wreck waiting to happen. This book got off to a slow start, but eventually picked up halfway through and had some good twists I didn’t see coming. 4/5 stars.
So, was pretty relaxed about this one, a psychological thriller with the title ‘The Perfect Nanny’, been there, read it but love these kind of books where the ‘cuckoo’ arrives, chaos ensues and then it’s all ‘done and dusted’ so was keen to read this as well.....it was great and unexpected to be caught out Because of that wont go into the plot at all except to say there are quite a few of them, within the one story, all leading to one big ending, interesting as I so often say when many plots and sub plots I have to stop for a minute and get my head together with this I didn’t, not once, it was all explained really well and seamless for the reader to follow Character wise, there are good, bad and dubious and I changed my mind throughout, the lead could have done with a touch more backbone but then she had a lot to contend with, I liked the inclusion of a character with disabilities and no real overfuss on that but included and not just ‘spoken of’, the expected ( and wanted ) Mum in Law was present and made quite the impact As always I love any book that includes houses, streets, neighbours and the workings of them all and this delivered on all of these A psychological thriller/family drama lovers perfect read I would say
I wanted to read this book for soo long and was excited when I got round to it.
Sophy is a new mum and just can’t seem to find the energy to engage well with her baby, no matter how much sleep she has she always feels tired.
It becomes a bit of an issue at home when things appear to be lacking in her care for her son, her husband is worried about her and rightly so. Or is it?
She employs an nanny to help with the care for her son and things seem to go from bad to worse, with a parent’s worse nightmare happening to this young couple, how will the family deal with this?
Definitely a 5* book and I definitely would check out more of this author’s work.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC of this book. All opinions my own.
This book was so good that I wanted to stay up all night to finish it!! But, of course I didn’t and had to wait until this morning when I got to the last page. This story was so twisty and I didn’t guess who was doing awful things to the main character Sophy. I did guess who the other person was but, I’m not going to give the story away. If you want to know you must read it. It’s brilliant!!! My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
3.5 Is It The Help You Need Stars-Not A Trick, Perfectly 99 CENTS!!! * * * 1/2 Spoiler Free When I became a new mother, the desire to have someone help me was enormous. It also was a complicated feeling for me because what I soon learned from watching and befriending other moms, the need would sometimes blind and disrupt smart thinking. Because the most obvious thing I noticed was people would be more cautious in lending their prized car to someone than to have someone watch their child. Really...
The Perfect Nanny uses that desperate need for assistance for our new mom and runs with it. Our new mom is being overwhelmed and can't seem to get a handle on being on top of things. She meets a lovely, friendly woman who in a moment seems to be a baby-whisperer, and a friendship/offer of employment as a nanny comes about.
Little does our unsuspecting mother know, her new perfect nanny has her own agenda. And little does the reader know as to all the other people in this book have agendas, too.
This book has all sorts of happenings to keep your mind active and looking to figure out what is actually happening...who is doing the gaslighting and what is the outcome.
The Perfect Nanny is a domestic-based psychological thriller based around motherhood, revenge and the facades we use to hide our not-so-perfect lives, set in and around Stevenage, Hertfordshire. The prologue opens with Olivia ”Liv” Granger still mourning the loss of her brother, Ben. She is heartbroken at his death and the fact that he will never fulfil his dreams, get married, have children and he will never get to see the world. Despite sixteen years having passed since his death, Liv is still wracked with guilt that she wasn't there to save him that day. So as the next best thing in order to try to quell or at least alleviate some of her pain, she decides the most effective way to do that is to seek vengeance on the person she deems responsible for her beloved brother’s tragic suicide when he slit his wrists in his bedroom leaving a note that read: ‘Life’s not worth living if I can’t share it with the one I love.’ Liv works as a nanny in Stevenage although, granted, this hasn't been for very long. Most recently she has been employed to care for little 18-month-old Evie, to help out her parents Clare and Gary who live on Lavender Drive in an affluent neighbourhood. However, she is looking desperately for another gig as Gary is a ”total creep”, having ”accidentally” brushed against her several times. Meanwhile, Sophy Pemberton looks, from the outside, to have it all. A gorgeous husband, Dom, a house in the suburbs and a healthy ninth-month-old baby, Finn. But she is really struggling with life at the moment and most likely has postnatal depression. She has great difficulty caring for and calming him and with the little sleep and time to herself she currently receives, is going from bad to worse. She feels alone.
Sophy attends an elite playgroup located on The Avenue called ”Mums Meet Up” and there she meets Liv who is with Evie. Liv craftily confides in Sophy about her unhappiness in her current position and they become friends. Liv seeking alternative employment coincides with Sophy's need for relief and she decides to hire her to help care for Finn and allow her some much-needed me-time as she feels she is losing her marbles. Granted, her mother-in-law, Elizabeth, has been lending a hand but she is very overbearing. This is just what Sophy needs, or so she believes. But ironically, yet not unpredictably, her family situation worsens when Liv is introduced into it, culminating in Finn going missing, which leaves Sophy frantic. Can she locate him and bring him home safely, and has Liv’s desire for revenge stayed strong despite getting to know Sophy intimately? This is a compelling and well-woven domestic thriller with heaps of suspense, some unpredictable twists and neverending drama from start to finish. Liv and Sophy are two women who are lost in very different ways; Liv in terms of an insatiable appetite for vengeance and Sophy for her life having become a living nightmare after her first born. While you feel sympathetic towards both of them neither of them are particularly likeable and despite some of their actions being pretty believable, some really made you quite annoyed at their idiocy, but it certainly made for great reading. Their intense struggles are captured in such an engaging fashion and the tension builds superbly by using alternating chapters from Liv and Sophy’s perspectives. A quick, easy and enjoyable read I recommend to those into pacey and gripping family dramas.
This was a fast and engaging read, though somewhat predictable. It centers on Liv, a nanny, and Sophy, a new mom struggling with motherhood, and is told in alternating POVs between the 2. Liv is convinced that Sophy had something to do with her brother's death 16 years ago and has spent years tracking her down with her sights set on revenge. Sophy had it all, but can't seem to pull it all together since having her son 9 months ago and is struggling with exhaustion and emotions, as well as an ongoing battle with her over-invested mother-in-law.
The characters were pretty well developed, though I was frustrated with Liv's vendetta that everyone else told her to let go, and Sophy's inability to realize that things around her weren't adding up. Even so, there were enough twists in the book (some more predicable than others) that it kept me engaged even in the cases where I rolled my eyes at one of the characters.
I liked the ending of the book and thought it all came together well- the author throws out a number of red herrings related to the climactic event towards the end of the book and it was fun to try to figure it out, as any of these options could have made sense.
All in all, I thought this was a fun read. I read it in less than a day and enjoyed the pacing and the dynamic between the various characters. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Sophy is a fairly new mom with a 9-month-old son. Her husband is worried about her because she seems unable to handle the pressure of being a new mom. She's tired all the time and feels unable to cope. Her mother-in-law spends a lot of time at Sophy's house in order to help where needed.
Liv Granger offers Sophy her services as a nanny. Sophy immediately takes her up on her offer...now she can stop failing at being a good mother.
But Live has a secret ... and an agenda. Sophy’s perfect house, perfect husband and perfect baby are too much for Liv to bear… and she’s going to make her pay.
And then every mother's nightmare .... someone takes the baby while Sophy is sleeping.
This is a heart-stopping emotional read. The guilt that Sophy feels is palpable. Well-written with twists and turns and secrets and lies revealed lead to an unexpected conclusion.
Many thanks to the authors / HQ Digital - HQstories / Netgalley for the digital copy of this psychological thriller. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
3.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Sophy is a new mom who needs help. She’s struggling. So her MIL, Elizabeth, steps in to help with Finn. Sophy meets Liv and they strike up a friendship… but Liv has a secret. She blames Sophy for her brother, Ben’s, suicide. Liv squirrels her way into Sophy’s life and becomes her nanny… what could go wrong?
All is not quite what it seems in Sophy’s life… who can she trust?
It was a good suspense novel. I’d say 3.5 stars. I did have a tough time at first because it didn’t seem to quite make sense or flow very well, but it got into a good groove. I did become invested in Sophy and Liv’s lives. I had a few suspicions that were right, but there were also a couple of twists…
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy to read and review.
The Perfect Nanny. An edge of your seat book. I was guessing till the end. Sophy is struggling with being a mom to her nine month old son. She feels tired and can’t seem to bond with her baby. Her husband thinks it’s good to have his mother come by everyday to help. This further doubts of Sophy’s mind that she can’t handle her baby. Along comes Liv. Someone who wants to help Sophy and will hopefully lessen the need for her mother in law. Things aren’t as they seem. Sophy thinks she’s going crazy. She has no energy and her husband is worried about her and the baby. What is happening to Sophy? #goodreads #netgalley
A super fast read from the POV of two very different women who are both struggling with their lives. Liv lost her brother when she was a teenager and was out to avenge his death. And Sophy is a new mom of a baby boy who is struggling with postpartum depression. Liv befriends Sophy at a mommy and me group while she is nannying for one of the other neighborhood moms and ends up becoming Sophy’s nanny to help with baby Finn. There’s clearly more going on in both their lives, Sophy is beyond exhausted all the time and Liv is busy trying to get to the bottom of what happened with her brother. Meanwhile, Sophy’s mother in law is doing all she can to undermine Sophy and her sons relationship although no one believes Sophy when she says her MIL has it out for her. The neighborhood women are all catty and out to outdo each other instead of supporting each other, especially Sophy as she struggles. Liv and Sophy end up working together to find out what happened when tragedy occurs. There’s several twists and though there were a couple of points I figured out before they were revealed, the ending wrapped things up. This would be a good movie. Psychological family thriller. Thanks to HQ Digital and Netgalley for this Arc in exchange for my review.

Told in dual POVs - Meet Sophy who is struggling with becoming a new mother and Liv who is out to get revenge on Sophy for being a part of a devastating act that has caused her family a lot of grief. Liv takes on the job as Sophy's nanny and soon realize that she may not be the only one that wants to harm Sophy.
I enjoyed this book very much. It is fast paced and kept me guessing. At one point I felt like everyone was in on Sophy's downfall. I like that the side characters had a bit of a back story as well. It made me feel more connected with them. This book has more twists than a rollercoaster ride so buckle up!
I can't give this book better rating just because I guess pretty quickly what's going on with Sophy. I've rounded up to 4, because the writing is good and the book is a page turner (I finished it one day).
The Perfect Nanny is a suspenseful thriller which brings together some of my favorite tropes: revenge, gas-lighting, and crazy mommies. It's never clear where the mystery will take the reader, but the ending is very satisfying.
I related to Sophie the most since I understand how difficult being a new mother is. I also liked that no one was who they seemed to be. Some characters I grew to hate while others, surprisingly, I came to respect. I felt as if I knew each of them by the end of the book.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good mystery.
I’m up way past my bedtime to say... wow! I loved the twists and turns. At some points I was actually telling the characters what they should do haha, like I yell at the tv during a sports program. The characters were great, the plot was perfect, even the ending left me feeling very satisfied. Very well written.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest feedback,
The Perfect Nanny follows Liv, a nanny, on her path of revenge on the person responsible for her brothers death. Sophy has a nine month old kid, Finn, and she's been struggling to take care of him. At first, it was thought to be postpartum depression. Now, they are unsure. Sophy's mother-in-law is an overwhelming presence in her life and takes Finn off her hands more than Sophy wants. This story is told from Liv's perspective and Sophys perspective, depending on the chapter. There were a couple items that I predicted quite quickly, but there were others that I did not. I found this book to be intriguing, captivating and a nice quick read.

I love books like The Perfect Nanny with so many twisty WTF moments! I love veering one way thinking I know what’s next only to then be yanked another way! I loved the alternating chapters written in first person perspective. I loved thinking I knew the final twists only to be shocked over and over! My feelings toward all of the characters kept changing from page to page! Disgust, pity, love, fear, and all over the place! These ladies are amazing authors and I’m totally addicted to their writing! I can’t wait to read more! This book gets 5 huge stars from me!!!

🔥MY REVIEW 🔥 Talk about a Fascinating psychological thriller WOW!!!!! If i could give it 100 stars i would. This story blew me away. I absolutely loved this book and stayed up all night just to finish it. It was so good that i messaged my bestie and told her we must read it together. I was gripped from beginning to the end and i cannot wait to read the next book written by both authors. I become a huge fan of these authors and hope to read more books by them soon . They make a great team .This was the first book that i have read by these authors and wow what a roller coaster ride it was !!!!! This book was truly a entertaining read. There were so many twists and turns. I can’t believe that ending. Now that is a perfect way to end a book !!! I hope that there will be another book . The storyline was well done and the ending was a complete surprise. All the characters are well drawn out so I felt as if I knew them and cared about what happened to them. I was very caught up in the characters and their relationships with each other. There were times i wanted to shake Sophy and just scream at her . I felt so sorry for her and just wanted to jump into the book and give her a big hug. It was very obvious she was being drugged. This is a twisty, intriguing psychological thriller that you definitely want to read. There’s a really huge twist at the end of the book that will leave you with your mouth hanging open. Then after that big twist came another. I just want to say Thank you to author, publisher, and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this 5 star story . I truly appreciate it!

This was a super read, the sort that is easy to get lost in and very easy to whizz through. I did guess a fair bit, but for me this doesn't spoil my enjoyment, it adds to my reading pleasure, racing on to find out when and how the penny will drop. It adds a heightened tension too in that I want to shout at the characters to tell them what I know! However, in spite of guessing some parts of the plot, I did NOT guess other parts. In the end I was changing my mind constantly between 3 likely candidates and this made The Perfect Nanny an exciting read. The characters were all believable, all ordinary but all struggling in their own ways because of huge losses. The emotional trauma brought about by grief is very evident in this book, it seems to destroy a lot of people's lives and lead others to make very unwise decisions which will deeply affect those around them. I also felt that in this storyline the idea of telling one lie seems to create more lies and in doing so actions become muddled and chaotic and potentially dangerous. The deceit of one character even at the end leaves the reader's jaw on the floor. How broken one has to be, but also how twisted one has to be, in order to plan a future that is full of delusions. Not everyone who is broken by life behaves in an immoral or criminal way but in this book there is someone who is flawed enough and convinced their behaviour is justified, to create someone very far removed from a place of trust. The menace comes from minds being played with so that health and sanity are continually questioned. Exhausting for one character but highly entertaining for the reader. The Perfect Nanny is a perfect prescription for for perfectly unacceptable treatment of people close to us who should have our best interests at heart, so pick this book for your next read and put right a wrong! Thank you to the authors, publisher and Netgalley for access to this 5 star read.

This book grabbed me and didn’t let go! It took off from page one and stayed at a fast and steady pace. I devoured this book and couldn’t stop thinking about it. I had the biggest book hangover after reading it. Poor sophy.. I knew she wasn’t crazy and it was more to it than just feeling worn out from being a new mom. I felt so bad for her. I was on the edge of my seat. This book had me not knowing who to trust. I won’t look at nannies quite the same after this rollercoaster ride. It had everything that you could want in a book. I loved the alternating POV’s and the ending was jaw-dropping! Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to review this book in exchange for my honest opinion
The Perfect Nanny is my second book by the author duo Karen Clarke and Amanda Brittany and I've also read some of Amanda Brittany's previous independent work, namely Traces of Her.
The story opens with a short prologue that immediately sets the tone of the book and from this point, I was totally engrossed in the story. Told from the perspectives of Liv Granger, a nanny and Sophy Pemberton, a new mother, this book crackles with tension. The cleverly crafted and intriguing plot follows the two.
I adore the combined descriptive styles of Karen Clarke and Amanda Brittany, which I find to be emotive and affecting. The writing flows effortlessly and the narrative is very well structured. The Perfect Nanny is a story that's packed with drama and twists as it spirals its way to the climactic denouement. It's a must-read for fans of the psychological thriller genre. I look forward to reading many more books from this duo. I read The Perfect Nanny with relish and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Overall, an enjoyable and easy to read domestic thriller.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from HQ Digital via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
Karen Clarke and Amanda Brittany are on of my favorite author duos, so I was extra excited when I was granted the ARC for this. After reading the description, I thought I had an idea of how this would go, and at first, it did. This starts off the way so many other domestic thrillers do but quickly turns into something completely unexpected. I did not expect where this story went. I was glued to each page wondering what could possibly happen next. This had several twists in it that kept me guessing but also did lead to me to figure out the final twist with too much hinting around one of the suspicious characters. Although, looking back there was quite a bit of suspicion around another character I didn't see at the time but now see that it was obvious she was at the crux of what was going on. I found all of the characters quite compelling in this and loved that there was so many red herrings that kept me wondering who I could trust. I loved how Sophie and Liv's relationship developed. I particularly loved the epilogue and thought it was a very fitting end.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. 8/10
Another great read by two of my new favorite authors
This is the second book I've read by these authors and I wasn't disappointed. If I have one negative observation about thauthors, it would have to be the way Sophy was portrayed as such a loser during the whole book. To me it doesn't make sense that a relatively new mom would be so constantly unstable, unreliable and so perpetually tired and exhausted day after day, chapter after chapter but she literally does nothing constructive to get better or figure out why. I just think that is a little farfetched. Most women would likely try to find out why they sleep 24/7 and completely fall apart and spiral out of control to the point where they can't even carry on a conversation, much less take care of a baby This isn't the first book I've read where "the terrible mom" just can't cope and basically becomes such an unlikable character that I really never cared if she got any better. I for one would have committed her to a hospital until things were figured out. But, other than that, the story was told well and there were quite a few twists that I never saw coming. I will definitely read more books by these authors.
My first ever job when I left school was as a childminder for a young girl. When she was good she was very, very good...When she was bad, she was bloody horrible!
This was my Saturday afternoon reading ☕🍰
Very well written by Karen & Amanda. Told in dual POV, this was a fast paced, suspenseful read full of twists, turns & a fantastic ending. The characters were very 'marmite', but nevertheless made for an engaging read.
'You trust her with your home, your husband, your baby….but she is about to destroy it all'
While Sophy is struggling with motherhood, nanny Liv is still struggling with the loss of her brother & his suicide. Sophy has no recollections of Liv from her past when she employs her as nanny to her young son.
This is Liv's chance for revenge, but all is not what it seems!

Sophy is a new mum struggling with motherhood. Liv is a nanny. She is struggling to come to terms with the death of her brother some years ago and totally blames sophy for his suicide. Sophy does not remember Liv from her past but is talked into taking on Liv as nanny to her son. Liv has an agenda of revenge whilst Sophy just needs help to cope as a mother. She is always tired and falling asleep and is feeling over powered by her mother in law.
This story follows Liv s attempts at breaking even. However all is not as it seems when unexpected mishaps occur to Soph.
This is an absolute page turner of a book, with twists and an ending I did not see coming. Absolutely loved it and highly recommend.
