Christmas is coming, and Paddington has saved just enough bun money to take the entire Brown family to Barkridges store for a holiday adventure. But things don't turn out at all as Paddington had planned ... and Barkridges may never be the same! Leave it to Paddington, that beloved bear from Darkest Peru, to turn a chaotic Christmas disaster into an unforgettable holiday surprise!
Michael Bond, CBE was an English children's author. He was the creator of Paddington Bear and wrote about the adventures of a guinea pig named Olga da Polga, as well as the animated BBC TV series The Herbs. Bond also wrote culinary mystery stories for adults featuring Monsieur Pamplemousse and his faithful bloodhound, Pommes Frites.
This was really not that cute, despite Paddington. He spends most of the book being annoyed or disappointed and I'm not sure why the store people are so rude to him. The cute ending doesn't quite make up for the rest.
I'm kind of sad because I expected much more from this one. Paddington and Christmas--two things I love! What could go wrong? A lot, it turns out. The story is really disjointed and negative and ultimately casts doubt on the magic of Santa Claus, which isn't something most parents of young children want to do. I'd give it 1.5 stars if I could.
This is one of my favourite Christmas books so far this year, lovely story, delightful illustrations and captures the festive spirit excellently.
Paddington takes the Brown family to Barkridges department store to meet, as he says, 'Mr Claus' and to take a ride through Winter Wonderland. And Paddington wants to ask Mr Claus where he makes his marmalade, as that is Paddington's favourite.
But for one reason or another things don't turn out as Paddington or the Browns expect. Firstly the store is almost empty with no atmosphere, the manager then queries Paddington's credentials, Paddington is disenchanted with the sleigh ride, 'I think I prefer Mrs Bird's window box,' he exclaims, and then, after finding fault with the lighthouse at the North Pole - its lights kept flashing -, he goes missing.
Eventually he is found, having been investigating the faulty lights on the lighthouse but whatever he had done, the result is that all the lights in the store go out! The manager is far from pleased and looks for Paddington to chastise him. But the Browns smuggle him away to escape the wrath of the manager.
Next morning it is headlines in the newspapers about a mystery bear being in the store and causing problems.'Crowds Flock to Santa's Workshop' screams one headline. So while the Browns are finishing breakfast Mrs Bird sneaks away to make a telephone call; she is obviously aware of what a bit of good publicity can do!
The next thing we know is that Paddington is being feted by the store manager, who tells Paddington that since the episode with the lights there have been queues all round the block to see the Christmas display and also to see the mystery bear. 'It's just like old times,' he declares. And he tells Paddington that after a free sleigh ride Santa wants to see him.
And when Paddington meets Santa there is a special present for him ... I wonder if you can guess what it was? The clue is that Paddington knew very well that Mr Claus made his own!
This is the first Paddington story that I've read, so I didn't have any expectations. It seems like Paddington is the youngest member of a human family. On a lack-luster trip to a department store, Paddington is disappointed ... but he's happy at the end.
I used to love Paddington Bear books as a child. This is my first visit as an adult and it left me somewhat confused and unsatisfied. I feel like this story is extracted from a longer story as it doesn’t always quite make sense. I felt there was something missing. It was a bit funny and nice colourful illustrations.
After seeing a lot of Christmas reading list, on which this book was mentioned, I had to read this one. It is a quick and very nice Christmas picture book. I really love myself a bit of Paddington every now and then.
Charming character in some charming Christmas capers. Paddington is getting poor value for his ‘bun money’ at a dilapidated department store; can the day be saved and does Father Christmas make his own marmalade?
Overall I've been disappointed with the picture books of Paddington. The characters are more endearing and humorous in the chapter books... everything in the picture books we've read so far seem very contrived.
I mean, it’s Paddington and Christmas, so there’s plenty that could have been done, but the story is disjointed and quite negative. It comes across as being badly edited and missing story, not to mention strange flow to the illustrations. Don’t bother.
