As an avid fan of fantasy, I try to combine shades of some of my favorite authors' writing - Tad Williams, Raymond E. Feist, and RA Salvatore, among others - into my own world. The result is a world of rich descriptions, complex politics, and heart-racing combat.
I started writing Sci-Fi short stories in fifth grade after seeing the movie "Aliens" in the theater. After getting into Dungeons & Dragons with friends as a teenager, my interests moved to Epic Fantasy, but still rooted in a Sci-Fi alien world. The Eve of Redemption series represents the culmination of years of world-building and back-story development, much of it through epic AD&D campaigns, that takes familiar epic fantasy and brings it to an alien world.
I live in Rhode Island with my wife and two daughters. When I'm not chasing the rascals around the yard or counting beans for the boss, I'm usually imagining the next turn on the long road that the Eve of Redemption series brings.
It starts a bit heavy on the religions and devine. Once into it, say halfway through book 1, the information written has been given context and the story really unfolds. The growth of the protagonist is tremendous! Well worth reading!
An amazing box set! Over 90 hours of audio, and it seems there are still books in this series though I’ll likely read those. Takes far less time that way. If you like fantasy you must get these books!
I listened to the whole box set on Audible. I love Chelsea as a narrator and Joe is a an amazing writer! I can’t wait until the next book/set is released on Audible.
This is officially my longest read of the summer thus far: an omnibus of "Eve of Redemption" topping out at ~5400 pages (that edition doesn't seem to be on GR). Maybe because of the sheer length, I found it hard to feel fully immersed in this series. The worldbuilding never quite cohered: there were elements of high fantasy and urban fantasy, which seemed like an interesting mashup, but I never felt sure how all these aspects related to each other, and that left me feeling lost in this expansive world. Also, it did feel somewhat repetitive. The biggest strength of this series was the emotional moments. Kari's growth is remarkable, and I enjoyed getting to know a character so intimately. My favorite character, however, was Emma, and her arc was very powerful. So there were definitely payoffs in the series even if I never felt entirely immersed in it!
I got sucked in due to the length. Audio books are expensive and this one promised me a nice return for my money. I tried to push through. The books are so boring. Half the stuff that happens makes no logical sense. The imagined world could be interesting if the the sub plots weren’t terrible. I didn’t make it through all the books.
It was meh...ok. It was repetative and kind of shallow...she gets finished with one thing, then goes on to another. Shampoo, rinse, repeat. Joe Jackson ain't no Terry Brooks.
