3-Stars (just) for "Breed #1 - Danger Close" -
It was just OK, but I liked it

US Special Forces retired super-assassins, led by 'No-First-Name' Breed, deal with and dispose of "Drug Dealers", "Mexican Cartels", "People and Child Smugglers", "corrupt officials" and "bad guys", plus "The CIA" and "The FBI"!

For a change, some "Good Guys" don't survive and the story is told with a touch of empathy for their failures.

There are four sequels written about "Breed" and his exploits, but having read/heard so many "Action/Crime/Military" novels over the last however many years (eg: Jack Reacher, Gray Man, Orphan X, John Corey, John Puller, Will Robie, etc), I think I might have outgrown(😋!) this genre and I am unlikely to attempt a "Breed" sequel any time soon.

From my Listening Activity:
Commenced: June 19 2025
June 19 2025 @ 15%: "Down-to-earth start - sounds promising, with good narration so far."
June 20 2025 @ 44%: "Still looking like a reasonably good story..."
June 21 2025 @ 77%: "An OK book, the 'action' has been more or less predictable, with a couple of interesting twists. Will finish it off tonight."
June 22 2025 @ 99%: "An OK "Action-Military" story featuring the inevitable "Retired US Special Forces" who kill many nasty 'drug dealers', 'people smugglers', 'cartel members', and the like.
A "same-old-same-old" Jack Reacher-style tale of derring-do."

Excellent first thriller from Curtis. Involves retired Delta operators getting together for the funeral of one of their group. Morphs into human trafficking and smuggling of terrorists from Juarez. Lots of technical information pertaining to snipers and their skills. Pretty good military skill porn.

Author definitely on my "must read" list for any future Breed thrillers.

Well, the storyline itself isn't new, BUT I thoroughly enjoyed it! Definitely has some rough material...rape, human trafficking including minors...Overall well done, loved the main character and would like more stories with him...just more original ones!

Breed is retired from violence. At least he think he is. Now he has to go to a funeral of one of his friends. Nothing strange about that, except he was murdered and decapitated... Why? This is "Danger Close" by Cameron Curtis. It is the first book about Breed ex special forces soldier and hopefully not the last. Although the basic problem has been used many times before it is still done with some new twists and with a great flow. It is a quick read and it's full of action. I am really glad I tried this author.

What I liked:
-Lots of action
-Lots of accurate details
-A great storyline with deception, human trafficking, the cartel, and international terrorists.
-The scenes with the Mexican Army and police
-A hot CIA lady

What I didn't like:
Nothing.

Strongly recommend.

This isn't my usual genre, although it really listened as if it was a crime drama playing out in front of me the type of thing I'd relate to the likes of Jack Reacher. It was quite fast-paced in that there was a lot of detail covered and kept me intrigued from beginning to end. This is book 1 of a series, and I was surprised at how much I actually took to it. I just sat back and listened easily. It flowed well, was well narrated and definitely felt like I understood and knew all the characters and was working along figuring out the plot which yes some may be a little predictable however this didn't take away from any of the enjoyment of this audiobook.

I genuinely couldn't find fault with this hence the 5 stars!

This is book one of the A Breed Thriller series and the main character is an ex-Delta Force sniper called Breed, no first name, who is only six months out of the forces. His old unit broke apart after one didn’t want to re up and two others in their tight four man team ended up injured and retired from service. When one of his old team, Dan Keller, is killed on his ranch in El Paso, Texas. Just before he hears about Keller, the news shows a story about a terrorist attack on a subway train in New York City. Breed and the two surviving members of his team, Mark Lenson and Bill Hancock, meet up in El Paso for Keller’s funeral and to bring whoever killed him to justice, their way. They find out from the local sheriff that their friend was shot, but then his body was desecrated like jihadists would do in the deserts where they fought. Keller’s wife Mary and eight year old son Donnie are also murdered in a similar manner, shortly after they returned to the ranch alone. It seems the killers haven’t left the area like the local police and sheriff believed, but were waiting behind to take out any loose ends. Lenson and Hancock return home, but Breed had promised to stay a week, so hangs about.
Breed decides to try and figure out why Keller wasn’t armed when he met someone so late at night and so uses his skills to go back over the ground around the ranch and find out where his friend was really killed. He travels one way around the ranch and when going along the over side, sees a glint of a reflection off glass. He climbs the high ground at the edge of his friend’s ranch to find a woman, Marisol, who is watching over an abattoir and meat packaging factory, which is a big employer in El Paso. She knows a few secrets about the factory they are both looking at and it soon develops into a much bigger issue than just the death of his friend and family! Marisol is also staying at the hotel where Breed and the others were, but there is also another woman there, who seems to be a CIA spook, although Stein says she is actually a Dept. of Justice agent. Marisol is a Latino woman who had a rough time in her recent past and is also a reporter looking into human trafficking, something close to her own life experiences. Stein is looking into the attacks happening in the US, led by a known terrorist, with threats from Iran over the Nuclear veto soon to be voted on.
El Paso is just over the over side of the Rio Grande river and Mexican cartels and others have long used coyotes to travel by foot or vehicle between Mexico and the US, but also through long tunnels dug under the river and beyond, with a battle between the US Border Control trying to stop movements across the border and the cartels and criminals trying to get through any barriers to move product, guns and so much more. It seems a terrorist organisation has moved in and made allies in both the US and Mexico, in the pretty lawless town of Juarez, just across from El Paso. Cartels and businessmen with illegal appetites, as well as corruption in the Mexican police, army and even US law enforcement, make it far too easy for those involved in the terrorist attacks to operate on US soil. Far too many illegal activities already have methods of getting over the border safely, be that with a bribe, violence or just a turned head. Now Breed and Marisol will need to locate the access point and Breed wants to ensure the killer is taken care of, so they can never hurt anyone else again. If working with Stein will stop the other illegal activities that are going on and put a stop it the terrorist access point, then that’s all good.
Breed wants revenge for his brother in arms and will rely on his other two brothers in arms to assist him in the danger zone. An absolute page turner, with very realistic descriptions of life over the border and the issue of missing women and girls, gun running, drug smuggling and the dangers from the cartels, corrupt police officers and even the military, as well as the poverty for most. It is a read that you just don’t want to put down until you discover all the pieces and clues along the way, that lead to one final epic shootout and a deadly outcome for many! I can’t wait to see what Breed may get up to in the next books in the series and I look forward to reading more. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Danger Close is the first book in the Breed Thriller books and they really hit the ground running. I thoroughly enjoy this book and liked the fact the story was a nice blend of action and plot whereby the action didn't really override the plot. Sometimes the story can be so full of twists and turns and action that character development as well as plot development is left by the curbside, but I didn't feel this in this book.

Set in Texas and Juarez, the descriptions of the places made me feel like I was right there. With Juarez ripped apart by the drug cartels and Texas dealing with the fallout, it was the perfect setting for a crime dealing with sex traffiking as well as guns and drugs traffiking. The action scenes are quite good and while this is not quite the death culling that I have read in some books, the casualties were still high. However, my heart nearly broke when Breed learns the personal story of one of the sex traffikers who escaped her situation and the horrible treatment she received. I mean, we are talking about children being kidnapped and forced into this situation. While not as graphic as some I have read, sometimes leaving it to the imagination can be worse as my imagination can think up all sorts of horrible things without having the descriptions. The sense of danger hanging over Breeds' head the entire time was so visceral, I kept waiting for the metaphorical axe to fall every chapter. I have to also say, the plot of this book actually made me cold considering how realistic it is in today's world.

Breed is a great main character and I enjoyed learning about him throughout the book. While the story is quite heavy on the action side, it does allow time for some character development and gives you some sense of Breeds's character. While they are only glimpses, it has made me curious to learn more about him and what drove him to the Special Forces as well as what drives him now. I love the camaraderie that exists between Breed and his fellow ex-soldiers, and I understood the anger in him when one of them was shot down in cold blood. I felt like the relationships were real.

Danger Close was a really good first book in the Breed Thriller series. There are some trigger warnings to this book as it does contain discussions around sex traffiking, sexual abuse (towards minors as well), drugs, gun traffiking, and general violence and upheaval. It also contains themes about family, loyalty, friendship, secrets, trust, and betrayal. Quite a bit to pack into a shorter book, but it works quite well. There were some twists and turns that I did not expect which is why I read the whole thing in one night as I couldn't put it down. Looking forward to the next book.

Book Name- Danger Close
Author- Cameron Curtis
Publisher- @srishtipub
Genre- Thriller/Suspense/Crime Fiction
Pages- 288
.
This is my first Cameron Curtis novel and I thoroughly enjoyed it. There are so many twists and turns in the plot and a stellar cast of characters. Topical and illuminating the depth that current political animals have slid to with the treatment of children and the trafficking empire. Breed, an ex sniper, learns of the grisly murder of a former colleague. Set in Texas and Juarez, the scene setting is impressive. Juarez remains a popular setting for crime fiction and it’s not hard to see why. Ripped apart by the drug cartels, doing good seems like a pipe dream, a fantasy. Breed works the clues and although you expect the casualties to be high, and they are, I wouldn’t say that this is a gore fest. The writing is invigorating and the action scenes are the best I have read in quite some time. There’s some real creativity at the play here. Short chapters keep you going and If you manage to spread your reading over more than two sittings, you are doing well. It took me by the scruff of my metaphorical neck and threw me into the middle of the most messy and realistic sense of fear and danger and suspense that I have experienced in some time. The technical detail and history of the characters involved as the story unfolds feels almost viscerally real. There were times when I caught my breath and my heart beat excitedly, envisioning the unfolding action as Breed and his team unleashed hell on the enemy. This book was a wonderful first book in series, with action, adventure, mystery, danger, real world crime issues, and friendships. If you are in the mood for straight up violent action thriller then this is just the ticket for you. It’s about bad people doing very bad things getting what they deserve in a variety of brutal ways.

I’ve definitely found a new author to add to my must-read list. This story line will grab you like few others and pull you in for the danger, excitement, and suspense that never lets up! This book defines “thriller” -- you’ll feel it every step of the way. I think we all love heroes, and this one is a shining example of why.

Watching the news, he mutes the TV when a call from best friend, Mark Lenson, informs Ex-Delta Force sniper Breed that a veteran from his old unit, Dan Keller, has been murdered on his ranch in El Paso. They had cut Dan’s head off, and Breed knew immediately he had to be there with the others, despite the mass casualty disaster in the New York subway he had been watching on the news! And at that moment, even with the sound muted, something happened, the camera image of a pavement and shattered glass displayed, then it changes to an aerial view. Two military grade bombs went off, one to draw the people out, and the second to kill the survivors. The glass showering down cut police, firemen, and paramedics to ribbons. Terrorists. America is under siege.

When Keller’s widow and son are subsequently murdered, there will be no stopping Breed from seeking justice. And he will confirm there is far more going on here than senseless murders. He gathers allies from the CIA and even a reporter as they expose a conspiracy to launch a massive attack on US soil. The terrorists feel invincible, they were prepared to win. Creating powerful friends in the Mexican cartels and US law enforcement, they are confident they cannot fail. But they never factored in the worst threat to them—Breed is aware now and has entered the fray.

'Danger Close' by Cameron Curtis is an action thriller by an author I have just been introduced to. Between the cover and the synopsis of this book they talked me into taking part of this tour, although if I am honest they didn't need to say much!
An ex-Delta Force sniper Breed has had enough of war and violence in his life, he is trying to live in peace for a time until he finds out a veteran has been murdered in El Paso and he feels like he should find the killer. Then the Vet's widow and son are both murdered too, Breed goes all out to bring the killer to justice. He ends up working with a CIA operative and a Latina reporter and together the unlikely trio reveal a terrorist plot that is being planned in the U.S. These terrorist think they are home and dry with Cartels behind them and U.S Law Enforcement as well. They only have one drawback and it ain't a small one...Breed is out to get them and nothing will stop him!
A book that doesn't let up in the action-packed story that run side by side with a mystery too.The adrenaline inducing, heart pumping edge of your seat story kept me in Breed's world for the maximum time that I could give. The characters all have interesting back stories and that gives a depth to the story as well as the action.
The one thing I shall say about 'Danger Close' is that with all this action comes gruesome findings that , if you have a weakness to violence etc, it may not be for you. For me, I thought the story wouldn't have been as good or as realistic if the author hadn't have included it all.
Thanks to Damp Pebbles blog Tours, Inkubator Books and Cameron Curtis for the book so I could bring this review today.

My Thoughts:
Cameron Curtis has the tendency to kill everybody off. Not as bad as Joe Abercrombie. But close enough. That is one of the main reasons why I stopped reading Joe Abercrombie no matter how good his story telling quality is. And now we have another author with the same tendency... **sigh** ...I had to take time out to grieve. This contributed to this book being slower than the 8 hours and a half that it is supposed to be.

The plot though, I did not expect that! I was totally conned in by the character! Shows you just how gullible I am!

This is a very violent read. I would not recommend this book to younger readers.

This is my first Jared Zeus audiobook and I would listen to him again.

Quantitative Evaluation:
Story telling quality = 4.5
Character development = 5
Story itself = 4.5
Writing Style = 3
Ending = 4
World building = 4.5
Cover art = 4
Pace = (8 hrs and 26 mins listening time)
Plot = 5
Narration = 5

Overall Rating: 4.5 out of 5

A soldier fulfills his duty towards his nation not only by fighting outside of the country but also as equally in the country. And the same duty goes for his fellow brothers in arms too.

An ex-Delta Force soldier, Breed, is enjoying his retirement when he gets to know about his fellow soldier’s gruesome murder and later on his family’s too. Breed with the help of a reporter and a spy tries to uncover some sinister forces hell bent on taking revenge against US by launching a deadly attack. Will Breed be able to stop the attack on time? Who is behind the murders and how are they connected to the attack on the US soil? Read on to find out.

Wow!! This book was a rush of adrenaline with action packed scenes playing in my mind like a movie. This is an actual thriller story with fast paced chapters. Characters were given worthy back stories and were well developed.

It has all the spice for an action-thriller lover like cartels, trafficking and terrorists. I have never read cartels and terrorism together in a same book as antagonists. Author has done a thorough research for military aspect, weapons, fight sequences and the espionage world. It gives the story all the more credibility and realistic touch.

Highly recommend for action and thriller lovers who love Jack Reacher, Jason Bourne etc. It has fights, shootings/killings, chases, spying all in the right amount which makes it an enjoyable read. Go for it.

Danger Close delivers a thrilling ride with its protagonist Breed, an ex-Delta Force sniper searching for peace after years of conflict. When an old friend is murdered, Breed feels compelled to seek revenge, especially after the friend’s family is also killed. In his quest for justice the stakes escalate as he becomes entwined in a conspiracy involving drug cartels and terrorists, threatening national security.

The book shines with its fast-paced action and realistic details about military life and crime. Breed is a relatable character, grappling with loss while using his skills to fight back. The supporting cast adds depth to the story, creating a dynamic team. The gripping story is gory, raw and fierce.

The story excels with fast-paced action sequences and the meticulous attention to detail that reflects deep research into military operations and human trafficking. Breed’s character is well-developed, showcasing not only his skills as a soldier but also the emotional toll of loss and the longing for peace. This book is a blockbuster thriller that kept me turning pages. The narrative is filled with twists and turns that kept me hooked. With plenty of twists and intense moments, this book is a phenomenal military thriller worthy of a movie based on it.

I received this arc for an honest review.
You are grab into this story from the very beginning. Mark Lenson, informs Breed who is at home watching the news that their buddy and veteran from their old unit is dead, Dan Keller. He was actually murdered on his ranch. You find out the more you read that these men were a unit of Delta’s soldiers so how and why did was Dan murdered?
After the funeral, they begin to look into his death more closely when two more deaths happen. From there you are just taken for a wild ride until you get to the end, but along the way, you have a story that will keep you turning the pages and not wanting you to stop until you find out what is going on. This book was an actual surprise for me at just how good the story and all of the characters were. I really liked everything about this book and is very much worth the read. A fabulously written 1st book

As usual I did I momentarily think a another new author another new character but took a punt when I read the synopses.

I am so glad I did, the book moved at a non hurried pace allowing the reader time to get to know the characters and to build the storyline. I say non hurried as a great many authors cram in too much too soon and it feels rushed this was not the case with this book.

As a British Army veteran I will say that this book is so well written with a massive amount of accuracy and it was a pleasure to read, again unlike some who get it so wrong.

I look forward to reading more books with Breed in and, recommend this to anyone who likes mainline action especially ex forces of any nation.

I received an ARC through "Booksprout" as part of a box set which contains the 1st four books in the series.

The story begins with Breed receiving a call advising him of Kellar, a member of his unit, being killed. Breed then makes a journey to Salem, Texas for the funeral. After the funeral, another event happens which has Breed looking to respond. Initially working with a Latin reporter, Marisol, he discovers who was behind the killings. At the same time, Breed meets up with Stein, a woman working with the DOJ on an assignment. Breed eventually teams up with Stein who wants to use him as bait, to stop an immanent attack.

To discover who was behind and why the killings happened, what event Stein was working and how it all worked out in the end, then you need to read this book.

This was a pretty good story but why the author felt the need to kill off 2 of the book's main characters and introduce you to 2 more only to kill them all off, especially when the two were the wife and child of a murdered friend of Breed's, the hero. I can't see myself reading/listening any more of this series, if the other books make it to audible.

No romance to speak of and the F-bomb was used 29 times.

As for the narration: Jared Zeus did an okay job. He gave everyone their own voice but when he read he read in a monotone voice. He has a great voice and if he'd read with some emotions it would have been a much better story.

Don’t Mess With Breed

Breed - Is that’s his first name, his last name, or a nickname? Regardless, don’t cross him. He’s an Ex-Delta sniper who really doesn’t like bad guys, and he especially doesn’t like the Middle East CUD forces. A Delta colleague has been murdered and beheaded, and Breed is pissed. breed is joined in his quest for justice by two women and three ex-Delta brothers who vow revenge. The action never stops, people die, and through it all I was glued to the pages of this book. As soon as I post this I’m downloading the second book in the series, Open Season, and may not get any sleep tonight.

First book by Cameron Curtis I've read..... and moving for the next one!!!!
I enjoyed it a lot!!!!
Breed remembered me at the begining Jack Reacher's character by Lee Child as action was happening in a small/medium town in the south of US (not in a big city like NY or DC) and he was initially described as a "lonely boy" but he is not and he is joining former team members to deal with murder of another former brother in arms.
Drug cartels, terrorists.... these are the bad guys in Danger Close and all sniper's training and skills will be required to deal with them.
Ready to discover what situation is next for Breed.

This is a story of an ex-Delta Force guy who decides to investigate what happened when an old buddy gets murdered at his ranch in Texas. There is no long build-up here, just straight into the action.

I found this an enthralling read, and it didn't let up all the way through. It's full of action and is quite violent. It's hard to believe that this is the 1st book by this author. I like the Breed character and look forward to reading the next book in the series to see what he gets involved with next.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Well this book won't do anything good for the tourists to the Mexican border region. So much violence and evil. I actually liked Breed and his band of brothers. They stood up against evil. Stein turned out better than expected. How truly sad that the bribes and trafficking were not a surprise. I think more and more people expect that to be part of an open border. The story was a worst case of what is in the news daily. To call the book entertaining seems so wrong. But I did find the story interesting.

Action packed thriller that grabs your attention from the start.

The author introduces his main character Breed and tells the story of a very dangerous man who will not give up the fight against drug cartels and terrorists who will kill innocent people to try and bring death and destruction to the USA.
Breed hunts down the killers of his friend and family and does not stop his quest until they are all dead, he survives to continue his fight against all who try to kill innocent people the only way he knows,by being tougher and more ruthless than them, a truly must read book.

I completed 13% of this book. That was enough! There are some novels that take time to develop, but there is usually some element that propels it along, be it the main character, the interaction of characters, the locale, the mystery, the plot, or the clever design of the story. To me, this story had none of those, and as I continued to read, it felt like I was in the middle of a "Gong Show" act, waiting for the judges to get the courage to hit the gong. The story seemed like a mediocre, summer TV show that had a low IMDB rating.

Good First Book in Series!

Danger Close, written by Cameron Curtis, is the first book in A Breed Thriller series. This is the first book I have read by this author, but it won't be the last. From the world building to the detailed character building, this book held me captive from beginning to end. This book was a wonderful first book in series, with action, adventure, mystery, danger, real world crime issues, and friendships. I am looking forward to reading the second book in this series.

Breed is just trying to take a break until he is told about someone being murdered at his ranch. From that moment Breed does not waste much time for even sleeping, to get to the bottom of it. How can a war hero who comes home safely time after time, be murdered right after he retires so he can be at home to watch his child grow up.
This amazing story sheds some much-needed light on how some things get done.

Breed thought the horror might finally be over and he could maybe find a bit of peace

When a former colleague and friend literally loses his head in the US, not some dark and distant land, Breed discovers darkness and terrorism much closer to home

Action packed drama and thriller- intense beginnings to action that makes you want the next book NOW
