Alfred Nobel is het fascinerende verhaal van een man en zijn tijd. It's Nobel prize times now and I was curious to learned to know more about the man that started it all. This was a huge book but was very readable and went by pretty fast. It was never a boring moment and the author was very skilled in making every part of Alfred Nobel's life interesting from beginning to end.

Nors biografijos nėra mano pirmas pasirinkimas, o Nobelis taip pat niekada nebuvo itin intriguojanti asmenybė, tačiau nustebau, kad knyga mane visai įtraukė. Įdomu sužinoti, koks gi buvo žmogus ir kokie jo gyvenimo įvykiai nulėmė, kad visą savo palikimą paliktų premijai įsteigti, kuri šiandien yra bene pagrindinis mokslinis apdovanojimas (anksčiau net nelabai žinojau ir domėjausi apskritai kaip ši premija buvo įsteigta).
Nors dinamito išradimo istorija man neskambėjo, kaip pati įdomiausia istorija, tačiau vėlgi, nustebino kad klydau: buvo įdomu skaityti, kaip Nobelis, kilęs iš išradėjo, tačiau ne itin turtingo, šeimos, kartu su beoliais via bandė prasimušti gyvenime, kol galiausiai pavyko ir susikrovė milijoninius turtus. Įdomu, kaip ilgai žmonės nesuprato, koks pavojingas yra dinamitas ir jo sudedamosios dalys, kiek nemažų sprogimų ir katastrofų įvyko kol imtasi atsargumo. Įdomus ir liūdnas Nobelio ir asmeninis gyvenimas.
Taip pat autorė pasistengė, kad knyga būtų įdomi: knygoje daig aprašoma apie to laikmečio visuomenę ir to metu mokslo pažangą, politinę situaciją, tad gerai susipažįstame ir su Nobelio pasauliu, ne tik juo pačiu. Jo gyvenimas taip pat pateikiamas istorijomis, ne tik sausais faktais, tad už tai taip pat dedu pliusą :)

Perskaityti užtruko ilgai, tačiau nemažai vietų sustodavau ir perpasakodavau savo draugui, tad skaityti buvo verta :)

Puiki knyga. Padėjo ne tik Alfredą Nobelį pažinti, bet ir geriau suprasti istorinį kontekstą Europoje bei greta vykstančius mokslinius procesus. Smagiai parašyta, greitai įtraukia. Netikėčiausas dalykas buvo sužinoti, kad Alfredas Nobelis buvo tikras feministas, ypač vertinęs būtent moterų intelektualines galimybes, nepaisant to, kad lygia greta pats moterų buvo apsukinėjamas aplink pirštą.

Knygos viršelyje reklaminė žinutė skelbia, kad ji buvo nominuota Švedijos leidėjų Augusto premijai negrožinės literatūros kategorijoje, bet autorei pavyko pasakojimą su daugybe dokumentinės medžiagos sudėlioti lengvai lyg grožinę knygą. Na, taip, jei tai būtų grynai grožinis romanas – jo literatūros vertė nebūtų didelė. Nei stilius kažkuo išskirtinis, nei kalba itin vaizdinga ar pan. Bet sudėlioti šitiek istorinės medžiagos į patrauklią formą tikrai turėjo būti nelengvas uždavinys. Laimei, Nobelis, jo šeima, jo aplinkos žmonės intensyviai susirašinėdavo – jų laiškų ištraukos leidžia patikėti, kad (at)kuriami psichologiniai portretai nėra iš piršto laužti.

Kažkam knygą bus įdomu skaityti dėl mokslinių atradimų kontekstų – dėmesio skiriama ne tik Nobeliui, bet ir kitiems žymiems to meto kūrėjams/mokslininkams/menininkams/atradėjams, su kuriais jo keliai dažnai susikirsdavo. Kiti erzinsis matydami, kad toks sumanus versle vyras yra taip lengvai apgudraujamas moterų – bent man tai tikrai ėmė siutas ir gailestis. Dar viena per visą knygą besitęsianti linija – jo santykiai su šeima, tai yra, tėvais, broliais, ir jų vaikais, nes savosios šeimos jis taip ir nesukūrė. Man, pavyzdžiui, buvo naujiena, kad Alfredas Nobelis turėjo du brolius, kurie jam gyvam esant galėjo varžytis ir dažnai net lenkdavo jį žinomumu visuomenėje. Vienam iš jų mirus net buvo paskelbtas klaidingas nekrologas, kad mirė Alfredas, tad jam teko „laimė“ sužinoti, kaip į dinamito išradėjo, tai yra, jo mirtį reaguoja visuomenė...

Labai daug temų ir dviprasmybių paliečiama, nes toks buvo ir pats Nobelis: vienu metu gamino ginklus ir kovojo už taiką, svajojo apie įžvalgaus proto, išsilavinusią moterį, bet švaistė savo turtus visiškai „tuštutei“, darbo metu gamino bombas, o laisvalaikiu paslapčiomis rašė poeziją ir niekaip nepabaigiamus romanus. Siuto ant šeimos narių, bet galiausiai dėl jų aukodavo savo gerovę. Tuo pačiu ir kryptingai siekė tikslo, ir, atrodo, viduje nuolat blaškėsi. Toks be galo žmogiškas portretas, dar kartą parodantis, kad visi mes iš esmės apie tą patį, kad ir kiek milijonų, ar net milijardų būtų banko sąskaitose.

Ant leidyklos dar norisi pabumbėti dėl korektūros klaidų, bet šiaip gera lengvo turinio (ne apimties:)) knyga biografijų mėgėjams.

Labai gera knyga. Apie Alfredą žinojau tik tiek, kad jis dinamito išradėjas ir galimai švedas. Ši knyga parodė daug daugiau apie jį. Atskleidė asmeninių būdo bruožų, asmeninio gyvenimo detalių. Labiausiai patiko knygosstilius. Ne oficialus faktų įvardijimas, bet įdomiai sudėliota istorija. Buvo tikrai įdomu ir įtraukė nuo puirmos eilutės.

Det är tung läsning, men väldigt gripande och informativ. Vad som särskilt gladde mig var att denna bok inte vara skildrar Nobels liv utan införlivar större delen av 1800-talets historia och berättar den från familjen Nobels perspektiv. Det märks att otroligt mycket arbete och efterforskningar ligger bakom denna bok och jag är glad att jag plockade upp den och började läsa istället för att fortsätta låta den samla damm på min hylla som den gjort de senaste två åren.

A fascinating book about a fascinating man, destined to be the standard work on Alfred Nobel. The author shows how parts of Nobel's life story was previously "sanitised" by a Nobel Foundation concerned that any glimpse of humanity would tarnish the purity of the great man. I was also enthralled by the story of the wider Nobel family, notably its rise to become (with British Petroleum and Standard Oil) one if the 19th Century's three great oil powers. There are one or two very minimal and insignificant errors that I spotted and the odd annoying linguistic mistake. Let me also say that I find the recent Swedish attitude among biographers to suddenly turn directly to the reader and inject themselves in the story somewhat annoying. But even so, a brilliant book and strongly recommended

Ett mycket gediget arbete. Värdigt en akademiker. Och läsbart. Kanske hade boken vunnit i läslighet om den kortats något, men samtidigt håller den läsaren (i varje fall mig) i ett fast grepp. Trots att man ju vet både att huvudpersonen dör i slutet och att arvet faktiskt blir rill Nobelpriset till slut.

Zeer goed geschreven biografie over Alfred Nobel. Het boek doet zijn subtitel alle eer aan. Het leven van Nobel wordt in de context van de belangrijke politieke, wetenschappelijke en culturele gebeurtenissen van zijn tijd geschetst. Dit maakt het zeer interessant.
