When Granny comes to cat-sit, she's in for a lot more than she anticipated in this sly, irreverent picture book by Rebecca Jordan-Glum (The Trouble with Penguins, Fall 2020).
"Don't worry about a thing," Granny said. "The cat will be just fine."
When Granny comes to cat-sit, she anticipates a little work, a few snuggles, and a good night's sleep. What she doesn't expect is CHAOS.
After Granny misplaces her glasses, she accidentally lets the cat out...and a raccoon in...a raccoon that looks a little like a cat. What follows is a raucous escapade that leaves in its wake one very confused Granny, one very upset cat, and one very satisfied raccoon.
A cute read! I was surprised by the cat the first time and loved it every time I read it. My toddler loved this story so much. The illustrations were fantastic. My toddler loved the cat’s big appetite, stretching out on the floor to eat. She loved the cat’s messy eating of the cupcake. The cat’s miserable looking as it came out of the bath was so cute. My toddler liked telling off “No” to the cat as it reached for granny’s salad and the fish bowl. What the cat did while granny slept was a huge surprise!
This book followed grandma as she waved goodbye to a family she’s cat sitting for. As she head inside the house, she thought to herself how convenient that everything she needed was written on a note on the fridge. Something must have scared the cat because out of nowhere, the cat jumped from the top of the fridge and granny lost her balance. Her eyeglasses flew off. The note on the fridge fell down into a bowl of water. The note is now smudged including the drawing of the cat. Luckily granny can still read the note and it indicated that she shouldn’t let the cat out. When granny looked up (without her glasses) she saw the cat (resembling to the drawing on the note) was outside so she went to grab some cat food to coax it inside. She went on to feed the cat and kept the cat out of causing havoc in the house. At the end of the book, granny’s cat sitting experience gave her second thoughts about having a pet.
Kitty was well written and illustrated. That humor was unforgettable when the cat was unknowingly switched because granny didn’t have her glasses on and couldn’t tell which cat she was supposed to be watching out for! The condition of the house granny left to the owners when they came home, it would have been good to see the owner’s reactions. But since the story was about grandma, so it was funny to see her hurry out of the house. My toddler and I loved the last page, how so many “cats” would love to follow granny home! An excellent read and I highly recommend everyone to read this book!
Naughty kitty! Poor grandma is trying her best to take care of Kitty while the family is out of town, but Kitty is being quite the little terror!
The cover of this book sold me on it. I had to buy it immediately. I love picture books when the pictures and words are telling opposing stories, and I love raccoons!
Granny comes to take care of Kitty while mom & child go away for a day or two. However when a note gets smudged and granny's glasses fall off, it is a case of mistaken identity! Raccoon (a.k.a.) "Kitty" arrives and feels as if they're in heaven. Chaos ensues, the real cat escapes to the quiet of outside and when the family comes home, some semblance of normalcy returns. Kids will like the illustrations that are fun and colorful.
Hilarious--and as someone who enjoys both cats and raccoons, I am the ideal audience for this book, haha. A grandma is pet-sitting the family cat, but she loses her glasses and doesn't notice that a racoon has snuck into the house and confuses it for the cat. The raccoon gets into all sorts of mischief, terrorizing grandma's cupcake-making attempts and beyond. I really enjoyed the illustration style, too! Lots of muddy colors and an endearing, smudgy style. Comedy gold!
Granny is supposed to be catsitting Satsuki the tabby, but when the ink on her instructions get smudged, she mistakes a local raccoon for the family kitty. This new kitty turns out to be quite the handful! Don't worry, everything will work out for Granny, Satsuki, and Kitty... even if they leave behind a mess. A humorous and whimsical story!
This book kicked ass! The entire store laughed our asses off reading it today and we're going to do our next storytime with it. It's a definite fun time!
. . . I'm feeling a raccoon theme story time coming in the near future . . . Raccoon Tune, you might have some competition for my favorite picture book about raccoons now!
Grandma comes to take care of Kitty, but when her glasses get knocked off and an opportunistic swap takes place, "Kitty" ends up being more trouble than she'd bargained for! Gorgeous painterly illustrations accompany the humorous matter-of-fact text.
I first wrote this review for my Instagram @miloureadsbooks Sometimes, you just need to sit down with a silly picture book and relax. This story is such a beautiful example of just that, I mean, just look at ''kitty's'' mischievous face! 🦝 Grandma promised to look after the very sweet cat, Satsuki. This should be a breeze as all the instructions are carefully written on a note. However, when the paper gets wet, this story takes a big turn. Granny thinks that the raccoon outside is the cat she is pet sitting, so she convinces it to come back inside, and that's when the trouble begins. The raccoon is having the day of his life, stealing cupcakes, hanging in the curtains and eating SO MUCH cat food. Meanwhile, grandma is working hard to prevent kitty to do exactly those things. After granny goes to bed, the raccoon crashes the house and the next morning, grandma is so relieved to finish her duty, and that she does not have a cat. It is so hilarious to see the mismatch between the text and the illustrations. As a reader, you know fully well that grandma is not taking care of a cat at all, but she has absolutely no idea. Most kids love feeling smarter than adults, so they will be delighted to outsmart granny. The illustrations are a delight in themselves too! The rough painting style and contrasting colours are somehow balanced with impeccable facial expressions. My favourite thing might be seeing the racoon watching TV with his sunglasses and popcorn. So funny!
A cute picture book about a grandmother who loses her glasses and mistakes a raccoon that enters the house for the family cat. Some things are predictable but the story makes you laugh and I could see it being enjoyable for younger readers especially if you try to have them clarify how else grandma could have realized it was a raccoon even if she couldn't see it clearly.
Are you looking for read alouds that would be perfect to compare? Vampenguin by Lucy Ruth Cummins has been a #kidlit favorite about the cutest switcheroo, & now that Kitty is (finally!) out in the world it would be an epic pairing. Plus it made me LOL repeatedly, AND it has such cute undies!
Granny is fairly certain that cat-sitting won’t be any trouble. Unfortunately, she loses her glasses and the cat runs outside. Granny coaxes the wrong animal back into the house and the “kitty” wreaks havoc for the rest of the night.
