Arik Bar Nathan #1

When Shadows Collide

Rate this book
Betrayed by his allies, he knows that he can trust no one.

Arik Bar-Nathan is one of the most skilled field agents in the international espionage scene. Coming from a childhood in the slums, he has accomplished nearly every goal and is now head of the Caesarea Special Operations Division in the Israeli Mossad, and second in command of the organization.

However, for the first time in his life, things are not going exactly according the plan.

Despite having been assured by the Prime Minister that the position of head of the Mossad would be his, a harsh woman with a dark secret has been appointed to the role. In addition, Arik’s personal life begins to spiral out of control following a horrific accident in Paris.

But the worst is yet to come. An assassination attempt gone wrong in Morocco leads Arik into a fast-paced chase after the seasoned terrorist Ayman al-Uzbeki, but before long he realizes that his British allies have turned their back on him and are using him as bait in their game.

His life in danger, Arik knows that he can trust no one but himself to keep him alive. Now, more than ever, it is becoming clear that it is only a matter of time before an inevitable collision – one that is not necessarily with his enemies.

‘Sarcasm is the lowest form of humor and the highest form of wit’ – a superb Spy Tale

Israeli author Nathan Ronen is a Holocaust survivor, born in Poland, then immigrating to Israel where he became a Department head in the Israeli Defense Forces. He is currently teaching marketing and management in Ort College and is CEO of Syn-task – an international consulting firm for strategic planning and organizational behavior. Nathan’s interest with individuals in the intelligence community, people ‘who pay a heavy toll for their commitment to defend their country,’ triggered his Arik Bar Nathan novels – TO KILL A SHADOW, WHERE SHADOWS MEET, and now WHERE SHADOWS COLLIDE, Book 3 of that series. ‘These people live in the shadows, work under false identities, and like any other person, are petrified of loneliness.’ This book was translated from the Hebrew by Yael Schonfield Abel.

Though reading the initial two volumes of the series first would doubtless enhance the excitement of getting to know the primary character Arik Bar-Nathan, the author provides a depth of tension as he opens this book that makes the proceeding story magnetizing. ‘The ceremony for recipients of the French Republic’s Legion of Honor medal was scheduled for eleven a.m. at the Élysée Palace…This time, for security reasons and due to the nature of the event, Arik Bar-Nathan, representative of the Israeli Mossad, was receiving the decoration half an hour before the official ceremony…’ And so we encounter Arik and his pregnant wife Eva and the story is launched.

The author provides an excellent summary of the tightly woven plot: ‘Mossad agent Arik Bar-Nathan is one of the most skilled field agents in the international espionage scene. Now, more than ever, it is becoming clear that it is only a matter of time before an inevitable collision – one that is not necessarily with his enemies.’

Obviously informed by the author’s research and experiential knowledge, this is a fine thriller that examines intelligence communities throughout the world. Written with skill and depth of understanding, WHEN SHADOWS COLLIDE provides both fine entertainment and insights. Recommended.
