Thanksgiving is all about showing kindness and gratitude to everyone you love—and if you're careful and clever, you can help a turkey friend find his own family, too!
Will you meet a turkey this Thanksgiving? If you do, will you be ready to help hide him as a special pet until he can find his flock again? By being helpful, friendly, and smart, you can help your new turkey friend get back to his family in the wild by disguising him as you search!
So, grab some supplies—scissors, colored paper, glue, and string—and get ready to make a mask to keep your turkey friend safe. Then maybe you can work together to hide him until he can find his family flock!
Sue Fliess’s poetic read-aloud text and Simona Sanfilippo’s vibrant, whimsical illustrations will provide joy for young readers eager to make a turkey friend (and disguise)! Also included are guides for teachers and parents about how to engage children in making turkey masks, learning about the history of Thanksgiving and facts about turkeys, and the value of friendship and family on this special day of gratitude.

A how-to book to hide the turkey on Thanksgiving so he won't get eaten. Has instructions for making a person's turkey mask and tail. Big colorful illustrations and showing the children having fun with the bird at Thanksgiving. Interesting detail about President George Washington setting up the date for the holiday.
I was hoping this would be a story about hiding a turkey from being eaten on Thanksgiving, but that wasn't really the theme. Rather, it's about a group of kids helping a wayward turkey find his flock. However, the turkey is depicted in a sweet and sympathetic way, there's never any talk about people wanting to serve him for dinner, and there's a great line at the book's conclusion about everyone wanting to be with their family for Thanksgiving--including turkeys!
There's also a cute turkey craft at the book's conclusion.
A really nice, mainstream-appeal book that celebrates compassion for turkeys without turning off general audiences. Recommended.
The publisher leads off this story with jacket flap copy like this:
"Thanksgiving is all about showing kindness and gratitude to everyone you love—and if you're careful and clever, you can help a turkey friend find his own family, too!"
Children are encouraged to make friends with the turkey and hide it.
Trust Sue Fliess to write a pretty subversive story and then sweeten it up with craft projects.
Out of respect for kids who like her message, I'll give this book FIVE STARS.
Hey, look what finally came in from the Library. A Thanksgiving book just in time for Christmas. haha.
This story is told in Rhyme - YES, we need more of that. The story is pretty funny. Kids find a wild turkey and bring it back to their club house to hide it. There are directions to who you have to make a turkey beak and feathers to dress up as a Turkey. Kids can make their own if they choose.
The artwork is happy and energetic. A fun little book.
These friends help hide a turkey before Thanksgiving Day by creating turkey disguises for themselves. They have a wonderful time together and then the turkey returns to his family. Fliess includes informative text at the end of the book.
Whimsical rhyming tips on how to hide a turkey if you just happen to see one during the Fall Holiday. Some background on how Thanksgiving started in America, and why it's celebrated, and a few how to arts and crafts round out this book.
