This one definitely surprised me. Rather than a novel of "romantic suspense", this is more like outright horror. The title character Helen returns to the home she has inherited, the place where both of her parents were brutally murdered. Soon after moving in, she experiences a supernatural manifestation which the author describes in just a few simple sentences, but makes sound absolutely terrifying. A short while later, a snooty aunt joins her in the house and makes barbed comments about Helen being mentally unstable, at which point I braced myself for the story to go in the usual "gaslighting" direction. But this doesn't happen. The hauntings get worse, and the people that Helen turns to are unable to help. It's a short book, but the story was still giving me the chills after I had finished it.

Pocket Books paperback gothic romances always seem to be different to those from other mass market publishers, and this modest little book is one of the best. If you enjoy ghost stories, try and find a copy - but don't read it at night.

J'ai été un peu prise au dépourvu avec ce roman qualifié de romantic suspens voire de romance tout court par les sites d'archives, alors que ce n'est absolument pas le cas. Je l'avais d'abord choisi pour son aspect gothique et c'est bien une sorte de mix entre Rebecca et Le tour d'Écrou. En revanche, j'ignorais qu'il allait y avoir ce côté très creepy, très flippant qui surfe sur la folie et la maladie mentale. J'ai adoré et l'histoire de fantômes m'a bien fait flipper.

En fait, c'est vraiment de l'horreur, cette sorte d'horreur psychologique qui se bâtit dans la réalité et bouleverse les repères des personnages. L'une des premières scènes du livre explore le passé d'Helen, et c'est un moment tout simplement terrifiant et même glaçant que j'ai trouvé admirablement bien amené. Je ne m'attendais pas du tout à ce type de scène et ça m'a agréablement surprise.

Alors, certes, l'histoire est courte et un bon paquet de pistes n'ont pas été explorées correctement – les enjeux familiaux, les lieux, les conséquences de l'héritage, la clinique.... On reste pas mal en surface. Il y avait moyen d'en faire quelque chose de bien plus étoffé et de bien plus trépidant en jouant davantage sur le suspens, sur la psychologie, sur les personnages secondaires qui n'ont, au final, que peu de consistance.

Mais ça n'en reste pas moins une belle surprise et une plongée au coeur de ces histoires vintage et gothique aux couvertures kirsch à souhait qu'on ne trouve plus dans le commerce et qui récèlent pas mal d'éléments intéressants. En plus, même si le livre n'a jamais été traduit, le niveau d'anglais est facilement accessible.

Expérience à renouveler très prochainement !

Great gothic horror. I fell in love with it again and was thrilled to find another copy for a dollar. Beautiful cover art. My second favorite Jan Alexander novel after Green Willows.
