I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

Choose Your Own Adventure: Journey under the Sea is an action packed choose your own adventure graphic novel that took me way back to my childhood. I loved these books as a child and wish I'd never given them away as I got older as I'd love to give them to my own children to devour now too.
This is a great reboot into this series and I can't wait to see what the next books in the series will be. The glory of these books is that you can experience different outcomes and adventure scenarios every time you read them and they never get boring!

I like choose-your-own-adventure books. When I was a child, I loved reading them. I think this is my first graphic novel of this type. The plot is different in each reading and depends on your decisions. What I like about these books is that when you reread them, you can make slightly different decisions and get an entirely different story.

YOU are an underwater explorer, and go on a mission to find the lost city of Atlantis. In other words: on a great adventure. My first story was quick and not so exciting. I should dare more, I guess. On the second reading, I decided this is a fiction graphic novel, and I’m not actually there. And the fun began.

The art is excellent. I liked colorful illustrations. I would recommend the printed version because choose-your-own-adventure books are always better in this form.

This graphic novel will be available in September. Thanks to Oni Press for the ARC and this opportunity! This is a voluntary review and all opinions are my own.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher Oni Press for this advanced copy. This was a gorgeous graphic novel and I thoroughly enjoyed both the artwork and the storylines. There were countless of storylines, all of which were so unique and intriguing. Loved the theme of sea exploration and would definitely pick up a hard copy of this.

Oh the nostalgia! I LOVED 'choose your own adventure' books when I was younger so I was very excited to get my hands on this graphic novel reboot and it didn't disappoint. This has all the charm of the original format (where you could experience a new version of the story every time you read based on the choices you make along the way) but the added illustrative element is sure to appeal to a broad range of middle grade readers. I look forward to introducing this to my classroom library and look forward to going on more 'choose your own adventures' soon! Thanks to NetGalley.co.uk and Oni Press for the free eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The newest Choose Your Own Adventure comic is an underwater epic where you travel by submarine. I want to start by saying I grew up on Choose Your Own Adventures. I still have some very well loved copies of the first printing. I remember working for my grandmother in her ceramic shop to save enough to go next door to the used book store and get my next book. So these books are special to me, even today I read them to my middle school students. Journey Under the Sea is one of our favorites.

So that being said, I was worried that the adaptation would not live up to the original. I have never been so excited to be wrong. The art is perfect. I love the backgrounds and how the animals and people were shown. All of my favorite endings were included. I did not notice anything missing from the original. Reading a Choose Your Own Adventure is always more fun in the physical copy so I cannot wait to get my hands on this. I have already called my local comic shop to preorder. I highly recommend you do as well. You do not want to miss out on this.

This is an incredible book where you get to choose your own journey under the sea. I’ve never read a book like this before and I think it’s going to be very popular with kids young and old. In your quest to find Atlantis you can read through the book and when you get to certain points of the story you have the choice to skip ahead, go back, or continue on to see where your journey takes you. I naturally chose the path that meant I had a very cute dolphin friend by my side.

I can’t wait to read more books like this, it’s an absolutely incredible and fun read.

I remember enjoying Choose Your Own Adventure books, and I greatly enjoy graphic novels so I thought this new book would be an amazing combination of the two. The decision making and variety of outcomes is wonderful. There are scientific threads, some are fantastical, and some I think are weird. It was nice to revisit this chapter of my youth, but I don’t think I’m the target audience for this adventure.

Thank you NetGalley for the advance reader copy! Published by Oni Press, comes out September 20, 2022. This is a middle grade graphic novel choose your own adventure. The storylines I did follow I really enjoyed! Being an e-arc, it was a little annoying having to scroll all over the place but if i had the physical copy 100% would have no complaints it was a fun reading experience and my first choose your own adventure!! I think kids will love it but any one else could easily enjoy this as well!

This is a fun graphic novel which brings to life a classic Choose Your Own Adventure book. You find yourself on a mission diving into the sea inside your small submarine vessel, but what do you choose to do when under the sea, explore further or go back, risk your life, or return to safety?

I have always loved choose your own adventure style books ever since I was young, although I have to admit to never reading any of the official ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ novels (though I think I own one unread one bought in a charity shop). The idea of the books if you’ve never heard of them is that you read the beginning of the story and then are given a choice to do one thing or another. Each choice you make asks you to turn to a different page in the book and continue the adventure there.

I always loved turning the pages in these types of books and finding such different results when you decide to take a different route the next time. With this new edition of the book though, it’s slightly different as it takes the original book with words and has turned it into a graphic novel where you can see what is happening in the adventure rather than reading blocks of text. I enjoyed reading this, although I had a digital copy which made it a touch harder having to scroll through the pages. However I think a physical book will be easier to read and I did enjoy following the adventure and finding different things happening to the main character while exploring the depths of the sea.

The illustrations are brilliant and feel like those in a comic book. I do love the colourful images and how it brings the whole adventure to life. The picture of some of the people you meet in the story are interesting too and I love how engaging all of the images are along with the few words of text dotted around the pages. The story itself takes lots of different twists, but one thing I didn’t like was how many endings there are and how quickly you can finish one adventure. Maybe it’s because I’m used to other makes of these types of choose your own adventure books but this one seemed to turn just a few pages, and suddenly it’s the end. I then tried a different choice only to find the story ending very soon too. It could be the nature of the graphic novel that makes this feel like a shorter read, less text and more pictures makes it quicker to pass through the pages, but I just felt a bit cheated with how quick and short each adventure was and it made me less keen to re-read it and try a new one.

Overall this is an interesting and fun idea, turning the choose your own adventure books into graphic novels for the new generation. I think it could definitely be good for reluctant readers and anyone looking for a fun and easy read while choosing which path to take, but it just felt too short for me and I wanted the adventures to last much longer.

This review originally published in Looking For a Good Book. Rated 4.5 of 5

I am a big fan of the Choose Your Own Adventure concept and series of books. This is only slightly unusual because when the series brand was publishing, in the 1980's and early 1990's, I was not doing very much reading. But the idea of a reader getting to dictate the path of a journey is appealing to me (why are all these books targeted to young readers - do adults not want to choose a path?).

When I saw this new Choose Your Own Adventure book, I was eager to get a copy. What I didn't realize was that this was a graphic novel, which, when I opened the book, I thought was going to be distracting. But it's quite the opposite. Adding the art enhances this!

It's hard to define the story when the book is actually many stories in one but the general concept, as you might guess from the title, is an undersea adventure. From the natural world of large aquatic animals to the fantasy world of underwater bipeds and their kingdoms, these adventures can take you to many places.

I did not read this book cover-to-cover, but I did read through a few different paths. Sometimes the journey was brief, sometimes a bit longer. The excitement level varied but mostly based on my choices.

Combining the popularity of graphic novels with the tried-and-true success of the Choose your Own Adventure series is pure gold. These will likely be popular additions to school and personal libraries. I look forward to some more exciting adventures.

The artwork is appropriately exciting without being too specific to a style or artist.

Looking for a good book? Choose Your Own Adventure: Journey Under the Sea by Andrew E. C. Gaska and E. L. Thomas, with art by Dani Bolinho is an exciting return to the Choose Your Own Adventure series, now as a graphic novel.

I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher, through Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.

** “This book will be different from others you’ve encountered; for here, YOU and YOU alone are in charge of every decision and every pathway YOU take. How the story ends rests solely on YOUR shoulders.” **

“Choose Your Own Adventure: Journey Under the Sea” by Andrew E.C. Gaska and E.L. Thomas and illustrated by Dani Bolinho is a fun graphic novel based on the original “Choose Your Own Adventure” story by R.A. Montgomery.

As the story takes you on a journey to discover the lost city of Atlantis, you are forced to make decisions — do you investigate chasms and water quality; do you join the people of Atlantis and if so, temporarily or permanently; or do you join other people living in the underwater realm?

Filled with very colorful illustrations, the graphic novel contains many different story choices. However, I felt each story line was a little simple and too short. I think they could have been expanded each one more as the ends of each storyline often came too abruptly.

Also, many of the story lines could be construed as having almost a New Age vibe, like being one with the universe and being one’s own light. I was looking for a little more adventure.

But “Journey Under the Sea” is definitely a unique take on the classic “Choose Your Own Adventure” stories, and is a good tool to draw in readers who may not want to undertake an entire novel.

This book is recommended for children ages 9-12, grades 4-6, and is due out Sept. 20.

Three stars out of five.

Thank you to NetGalley and Oni Press for the advance review copy.

Okay, thank you, Choose Your Own Adventure, for continuing the tradition! These were some of my absolute favorite books growing up. I spent hours flipping back and forth through the pages trying to discover every possible ending, so I was both excited and a little skeptical when I saw they were being adapted into graphic novels.

I honestly could not imagine how the format would work, but I was so pleasantly surprised. It totally works.

The artwork adds a whole new dimension to the adventure without taking away the fun of making your own choices. I loved exploring the depths of the ocean, searching for Atlantis, and seeing where each decision led. Just like the original books, no two reading experiences have to be the same, which makes this one incredibly rereadable.

The illustrations are colorful, action-packed, and full of sea creatures and underwater mysteries that middle grade readers are going to love. I do think this is one of those books that is best experienced as a physical copy since flipping between pages is part of the fun.

If you grew up loving Choose Your Own Adventure books, this graphic novel is a wonderful dose of nostalgia. If you've never experienced the series before, this is a fantastic place to dive in. I really hope they continue adapting more of the classic adventures because I'll happily read every one of them.

Ready for a fantastic adventure?!

In Choose Your Own Adventure: Journey Under the Sea, YOU are the main character! As an underwater explorer, you must be ready to embark on a mission to find the lost city of Atlantis!
Are you ready?!

This adventurous graphic novel is perfect for ocean lovers and anyone seeking thrills but also for kids who are hesitant to spend giant chunks of time reading or for kids who might not enjoy reading blocks of text. You can spend as much or as little time as you'd like with the story and you can always come back to new ones in the future!

I read a few Choose Your Own Adventure-type books as a kid and thought they were a lot of fun to read because you're reading the same book but getting a new adventure each time.
This was a lot of fun to read as an adult, too, despite that I ended up at 'The End' just five or six pages into my first adventure! I didn't get much further the second or third time, either, but each time was a new adventure and I did finally make it to Atlantis!

No matter your chosen path, you're sure to enjoy the wonderful illustrations, underwater creatures, technology, and the overall adventure woven into each page!
Enjoy your journey!

What a throwback! Choose Your Own Adventure: Journey Under the Sea by Andrew E.C. Gaska; E.L. Thomas is a new take on a classic book series. I remember reading the original books back when I was a kid, and I was so excited to be able to read this graphic novel adaptation! The story revolves around a diver on a ship in the middle of the ocean. Depending on which path you choose, you can encounter all sorts of adventures, involving sharks, creatures, monsters, etc.

Overall, Choose Your Own Adventure: Journey Under the Sea is a super fun graphic novel that would make the perfect gift for the kid in your life. One highlight of this book is the "you choose" format, which I enjoyed just as much as I did when I was a kid. It was so much fun to be able to make choices that impacted the way that the story went. I think the first time I tried reading this story, I ended up reaching an "end" after 10 or so pages. The fun part is being able to start over and reach a different ending. If you're intrigued by the description, I highly recommend that you check out this book when it comes out in August!

Choose your Own Adventure books? That was such a fun throwback! I requested this book because I’ve been getting more and more into the graphic novel medium and combined with a type of story I use to love as a child sounded like an exciting idea.

It was really fun to take different paths do discover all the possible endings and ways the story could develop. I found myself restarting it again and again every time I reached and ending and honestly that made me feel like a kid again.

To be honest, a couple paths were not so interesting and did feel a bit wonky cause the story didn’t flow as smoothly but overall it was fine.
The art was not ground breaking and it’s not a decisive factor in the appeal of the graphic novel.

Honesty this was just fun and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a quick read, people who enjoyed this type of storytelling when they were younger and wat to feel nostalgic… and obviously, KIDS! Really think middle grade reader will enjoy it.

When I requested this comic/choose your own adventure I was really happy and excited.
Unfortunately this wasn't for me. There are a couple of reasons why I didn't like it.

Firstly I didn't have its physical copy and I didn't enjoy it on my cell phone, it was alot of work scrolling to find the pages. In my honest opinion I might have enjoyed it if I had its physical copy.

Secondly I wasn't excited about the storyline, and my becoming fish food in about 2 minutes of starting didn't help.

Lastly I'd have loved if the adventure was more exciting but it was rather bland. It didn't interest me in the least

I guess it'll be fun to solve with a kid since they are a the target audience and they can learn a thing or two about the different creatures.
Plus the illustrations were beautiful.

All in all I wouldn't recommend it to the adults.

This book brought back a lot of great memories for me as the Choose Your Own Adventure series was a big part of my childhood. I love it that this one is a graphic novel, yet at the same time, I felt a bit put off by the fact that I could see my character. I always thought the point of these books was to be able to believe that I was really participating in them.

This tiny quibble aside, I made my way through four or five different endings, and I was happy to see that the story was similar to the ones from the ‘80s. As long as the digital version allows people to click on a link to go to their selected page, then I see today’s kids loving the book.

I was always a huge of the Choose Your Own Adventure series as a kid. I would read them over and over to get different endings. I was excited to see that there was a graphic novel.

In this book, you take a sea adventure. What will hook readers includes sharks, a possible discovery of Atlantis, and dangerous situations with your ship. If you are a reader of graphic novels, you will be able to follow the story easily. If not, you will struggle. However, the plot choices were easy to follow. You just move to pages, just like you did in the original novels.

I would recommend this and others to my son, who loves all graphic novels, but for me, it was a little to hard to follow what was going on. I will stick with the regular novels.

Uff, I really liked this graphic novel because of the choose-your-own-adventure format.

I spent a lot of time trying to get to the different endings and not die trying haha, and it was a very entertaining experience. It's definitely worth it, because not only the plot is fascinating but also the illustrations. I think it's perfect if you want to change your type of reading, or also if you have a reader's block, it will help you for sure.

I only gave it 4 out of 5 stars, because it would have been cooler to read it in physical, so obviously I will try to get a physical copy when it is officially published in September.

Choose-Your-Own-Adventure books are classics for a reason. Feeling as though you can change the story with your choices, like you get a new story each time you read through, this can engage someone who thinks reading is "boring". Translating this concept to a graphic novel only adds to the appeal. If you have a reader who is intimidated by large blocks of text, the illustrations may help them stay engaged.

The writing tended to be cheesy... but extra cheese sometimes adds to the appeal. Consider pizza.

Colorful and exciting, I highly recommend this books for anyone who enjoys puzzles, comics, and the ocean.

Delightfully nostalgic. I loved these books when I was a kid. This is actually an adaptation of one of the original books, probably one I read way back when. They're still every bit as fun, however many years later and in graphic novel format. The art is really good, especially when illustrating some of the more trippy concepts. There's a story map at the end, which at least gives you some sense of how many endings there are. I'm definitely going to keep an eye on this series, and hope very hard for Mystery of the Maya, my favorite, to get an adaptation.

This is a great book for young readers wanting to explore the "choose your own adventure" genre. As a grade 3 teacher I spent quite a bit of time this year looking for choose your own adventure novels and was surprised how hard it was to find some good ones. I am excited to add this one to my collection when it is published in August! My students are very interested in this genre and I think this book would be a great addition to my classroom library. The fact that it is also a graphic novel will make it even more intriguing for my students! Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book!

Oh the memories from elementary school! I read all the Choose Your Own Adventure books when they first came out, and loved them. I was super excited to see the illustrated copy available on NetGalley and signed up to read it right away.

The story was everything that I remember, and the new illustrated format is beautiful. The only difficulty I had with this ARC was that it was not easy to turn to (whatever page you were instructed to turn to) in the digital proof format. I am SURE that this will be remedied by the release.

Thanks for letting me relive my childhood.

"Better to die for freedom than live under a tyrant.'" -From Choose Your Own Adventure; Journey Under the Sea

4.5 stars

A fresh, updated and expanded version of the original classic. These bright, bold illustrations pull the reader into the story. Most of the plots follow the original, with some updates for technology. I still love all the pathways to Atlantis. I think the graphic novel format works really well for CYOA. Any fans of the original, along with anyone interested in choosing your own path books should definitely pick up this one.

As a Gen Xer, there are few things better than Choose Your Own Adventure books. I read every available story I could get my hands on and kept track of all the endings to make sure I got each one. Journey Under the Sea combines CYOA and graphic novels into a whole new world of fun. The graphic novel versions will certainly appeal to today's readers. Though, I did find reading an e-version less fun because the story is page-specific which doesn't line up with the e-reader page. Other than that, this was an excellent read and adventure.

I haven't read a Choose Your Own Adventure book in decades and this was such a wonderful treat! This story was extremely clever and there were SO many paths and different endings that it kept me entertained for a while chasing them all down. I brought out scratch paper to mark my paths out so I could make sure I followed each one.

Some endings are things you'd expect from a deep-sea adventure while others are so unexpected and it keeps it really fun not knowing what your choices are leading to. The variety is great.

The art is very nice and I love that its in full color.

How cool was this book! I loved CYOA books as a kid. I have some old ones on my personal bookshelf. This graphic novel format adds another layer for kids in the modern age. I am purchasing every single one for my school library. The graphics are easy to follow. The story line is just as enjoyable in graphic format, and I still found myself keeping my fingers in pages to go back and make different choices. A great trip down memory lane for adults and an accessible way to introduce this beloved series to new readers.

This was such a blast! Reminded me of my childhood when my sister and I use to read these all the time. There was a twist though, this was the graphic novel so it included some super neat artwork among the pages. The writing and outcome were also fantastic. The choosing your own adventure pages gave me so much nostalgia and hitting 'The End' pages over and over, it was so much fun to go back to the previous page to choose the other option as an outcome to see what you got.

5/5 would recommend.

I loved choose your own adventure books as a kid, so when I saw this one I knew I had to pick it up and give it a read. I was not disappointed!

This is a beautiful he laid out story in a graphic comic book layout that had readers go back-and-forth between decisions. It was fun and engaging and had a good story to go along with it. I imagine this will be a hit with younger readers, too!

My thanks to the author and illustrator, publishers and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this digital ARC.
