Brotherhood by Fire is an emotional story. It’s different than my usual/normal read, and I was engaged from the first few pages. It brings to mind some of my friends who are married/dating first-responders.

I can’t exactly explain why I love a book that drags me through ups and downs, tears, and laughter, but this one does just that. In a good way. I love a story that makes me feel strongly and I enjoyed this glimpse into Andy’s life and love as well as the brotherhood of the fire department family.

It was effortless to connect and empathize with Andy, and he brought me to tears. (Have tissues handy.) This heart-tugging story covers love brotherhood, sickness, secrets, and camaraderie. I look forward to reading more touching stories from the author in the future.

Thank you in advance to the author, Lindy Bell, for providing a complimentary review copy through iRead Book Tours. A positive review was not required nor requested, and all words are my own.

This is the author’s debut novel, and was previously published in February 2021 as Fully Involved. To be quite honest, the previous title seems to fit the story a bit better. This is, for anyone wondering, a standalone read.

Bell tackles a different kind of story – one that is steeped in a reality that is not getting near the attention it should. And, one I didn’t even know until I read the book. It has a personal connection as my uncle was a firefighter, making it to assistant chief, and retired with 30 years of service. And, given this takes place in Texas – my home state (and I lived in Mesquite for a short time) – I couldn’t not read it.

The heart of the story is based on the all too real deaths of firefighters from cancer. The one that inspired the author is from 34 years ago in 1988 – Larry Kraus (32) of the Abilene, Texas fire department.

Bell starts off the book talking about Kraus’ death which began with a 1982 telephone transformer fire. A fire that coated Kraus’ bunker gear with oil containing PCB (polychlorinated biphenyl) – a known carcinogen. And, at the time of his death and autopsy, high levels of PCB were found.

From there, she includes statistics about firefighter deaths from cancer, which are now considered “line of duty” deaths, and the BIGGEST risk factor.

Knowing what happened on 9/11 and “ground zero”, this sets the book of for an informative, compelling, and heart-breaking read.

Those who are fighting a battle with, know someone battling, or have lost a loved one to cancer, particularly pancreatic cancer – this book can be a bit triggering. There were many places in this book that I cried as it hit really hard.

While this is about Andy and Katie’s relationship and “battle”, there are other characters:

🚒 Lt. Mike Bentley (C-Shift supervisor, Station 2)
🚒 Chief Jerry Hamilton
🚒 Battalion Chief Curtis Rogers
🚒 Sean Hedrick (Firefighter/Paramedic, Station 2)
🚒 Keevin Jernigan (Firefighter/Paramedic, Station 2)
🚒 Canfield (Firefighter/Paramedic, Station 2)
🚒 Hart (Firefighter/Paramedic, Station 2)
🛍️ Charlene Todd (RITE2U office manager)
🛍️ Walt Henderson (supervisor at RITE2U)
📖 Sally Morton (teacher at school, becomes Katie’s friend)
🏥 Mandy Fitzhugh (ER Nurse; tragic connection with firefighter; father killed in fire – doesn’t live above the first floor)
👒 Natalie (Jerry’s wife)

These are in addition to Katie’s parents and brother’s family. While the ages are not mentioned until the very end – both Katie and Andy are in their mid-late 20’s.

There are quite a few characters to keep sorted, so it would likely have been best to have a character guide in the beginning.

While this is told from multiple POVs – Bentley, Jerry, Sally, and even Mandy. Though the main focus is on Andy and Sally.

The characters are compelling and supportive in their own ways. Bell definitely captures the brotherhood of firefighters in the characters and their interactions.

In addition to Andy’s battle, there are also a few other story arcs in this book:

👨‍👦 Lucas and his attachment to Andy (Big Brother, Little Brother program)
💕Mandy and Sean’s relationship

This begins, pretty much mundane – Katie getting ready for a new school year and Andy worked a second job at RITE2U. Katie is also dealing with Sally’s “infatuation” over Andy – which causes a slight problem.

It is clear right off – something is wrong with Andy. But, what is it? Sally seems to hint at “someone else”, but Katie knows that isn’t it. Andy doesn’t want to make a big deal of it. He also has to deal with the antagonistic Lt. Bentley.

Katie also senses something is wrong with one of her students – Lucas Matthews and learns that his father isn’t in his life and his mother isn’t getting any child support. (As of note – this hits close to home for me, as this was my situation). Andy becomes Lucas’ big brother.

Katie confides in Natalie that something is wrong with Andy. And, Andy finally sees a doctor, but doesn’t tell Katie. Sally wrongfully assumes Andy is having an affair.

Andy is forced (34%) to tell Katie about it – but doesn’t want to tell anyone at either workplace. They need the money from all three jobs. They do tell Chief Hamilton who is taken back to a tragedy in his family. But, he is the one who helps the Garretts with a “work-related injury claim” due to the diagnosis.

Mandy figures out what is going on based on Andy’s schedule at the hospital, and eventually it silently spreads to Andy’s brothers at the station house. He will eventually tell them after a near-fatal fire (around the 78% mark).

In the middle, despite her reservations with firefighters due to them being a reminder of the night her father died, and the reason she doesn’t live above the first floor – starts a relationship with Sean.

The story has a pretty predictable storyline and ending. Given the plot, it isn’t hard to figure out where this is going to go. Though, it is an entertaining read to see the camaraderie of the firefighters and how supportive everyone is.

There is a scene in which Bentley is taken to task for something that happens to Andy. Though, in my opinion – I thought Bentley was a coward, but not malicious. It was interesting to see how the incident refocused him.

Overall, this is a great read – but, again, knowing the subject, it isn’t a book I’d re-read that often given its realistic tone and dialogue. Bell does have a wonderful ability to tell a story that keeps the readers interested, despite the length of the book (459 pages of story). Short chapters are definitely the way to keep me reading in that case.

I did feel the book was a bit too lengthy though. There was also part of a sentence or paragraph that went missing on page 256 – “Their bitter taste was worth the relief Andy” and then it goes into another paragraph.

The “end” takes readers 40 years AFTER Andy’s death, which I thought was TOO far out. Realistically, given the year he died, I would’ve gone only 30 years maximum; ideally 25. Though, it was interesting to see where everyone ended up. The “surprise” at the end was touching and inspirational.

I did have a slight problem with Andy working at the station as well as RITE2U as his firefighter pay and Katie’s teacher pay SHOULD’VE been enough money. I do have to wonder about their house payment, car payments, and other expenses. This factors in when the cancer progresses.

It is hard to delve into a book like this without spoilers, and knowing ahead of time what the end is going to be. And, let’s face it – anyone who knows someone who had pancreatic cancer – it is best caught in the VERY early stages. Most have a life expectancy of 3-3½ years; however, the prognosis isn’t good.

Some very famous people have died of pancreatic cancer. Some battled it publicly, while others had it revealed after their deaths:

✳️ Alan Rickman, Actor (2016) [was not known until after his death]

✳️ Patrick Swayze, Actor (2009)

✳️ Michael Landon, Actor (1991) [as of note, he actually talked about it on a Johnny Carson episode]

✳️ Alex Trebek, Jeopardy Game Show Host (2020)

✳️ Luciano Pavarotti, Singer (2007)
Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Ruth Bader Ginsburg

✳️ Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Supreme Court Justice (2020)

While the author’s intent is to raise awareness about the unseen dangers that firefighters face, the book should also serve as a PSA for ANYONE who is noticing unexplained changes in their health and lifestyle – appetite, weight loss, fatigue, other symptoms – to get themselves examined by a doctor AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Early detection is key to survival.

I rounded up from 3.8 stars to 4 for the research, presentation, and how this book truly serves as an informational asset.

There are certain elements of faith contained with reference to praying. It isn’t a religious book, and does not attempt to preach at the reader. It is a clean read for those wondering about content such as language and intimacy portrayed. It is only referenced, not seen on the page, so no graphic details are involved.

Given the subject matter, it is best suited for those who want realism with their fiction, and those over 18+.

Lindy did a superb job of bringing us into the lives of firefighters and experiencing their loyalty and commitment to each other that is commonly referred to as the “brotherhood’. This book is also a beautiful love story between a husband and wife.

TW: Cancer in Spouse and Caregiver Role

Andy is passionately in love with his wife Katie. He also loves being a firefighter, so when he is diagnosed with cancer his whole world is turned upside down. Everything he thought was certain is now unknown. In an attempt to protect Katie, Andy hides his diagnosis. However, Katie's fears and his increasing pain and moodiness only succeed in fueling a growing divide between them. The fire station and the brotherhood with his other firemen are Andy's refuge.

However, even this is increasingly put in jeopardy as the hostility between him and the station officer, Mike Bentley, grows. Andy becomes increasingly determined not to reveal his illness and his shift crew rallies behind him; that is until events take a downward spiral. Will courage, duty and love be enough to save Andy? If the worst should happen will his love for his wife or his love for the station be his greatest legacy?

What is there to say about this book: I have to admit that starting out I was not a fan of Andy as he appeared very juvenile and selfish in his actions. The major redeeming quality I found in him was dedication he had to Katie, even if his actions were sometimes misguided. Katie proves to be a strong and amazing support system throughout the book. However, while Katie and Andy's love and her role as a caretaker are important parts of the story they aren't the whole story.

No this is a story about brotherhood and the intense bond that develops between firefighters. The author highlights this fierce bond throughout the novel and especially when Andy gets sick. The most intriguing part of this book was the realization that it is the job which likely caused Andy's cancer. The book highlights this in a number of ways and shows Andy encouraging his brothers to be proactive with their health.

For me the best parts of the book, the parts that felt most real, took place when the realities and impacts of Andy's cancer were discussed. The author shows the stresses and burdens for Andy, Katie and those in their inner circle. It provides a unique look at the suffering and pain experienced by all. It highlights the lengths one will go to protect the ones they love.

Brotherhood By Fire by Lindy Bell is not just a story you read, it is one that settles into you and stays long after you have turned the final page.

What affected me most was not only Andy’s diagnosis, but the quiet, heavy choice to carry it alone. The way he shields Katie from the truth does not feel like denial, it feels like love pushed to its most painful limit. That slow, almost unspoken distance between them felt incredibly real, and at times, it was difficult to read, not because it was overwhelming, but because it was honest.

The firehouse is written with a kind of authenticity that makes it feel lived in rather than described. It becomes more than a setting, it is a space where strength is expected, where weakness is hidden, and where Andy is constantly pulled between who he is and what he is allowed to show. The tension with Lt. Mike Bentley adds just enough pressure to make that internal conflict feel even more suffocating without ever taking away from the heart of the story.

What truly stands out is the restraint in the storytelling. The emotions are not forced, they are allowed to build naturally, and that makes every moment land with more weight. The bond within the crew feels real, steady, and quietly powerful, the kind of support that does not need to be loud to be felt.

There is a particular kind of honesty in this book that is hard to find. It does not try to dramatize pain, it simply shows it, and in doing so, it becomes even more impactful.

More than anything, this story left me thinking about how often people fight their hardest battles in silence, and how love, even when it is meant to protect, can sometimes create the deepest distance.

That feeling stayed with me long after I finished.

Brotherhood by Fire is a Page Turner from the Very Start. The author's writing style creates an authentic and relatable novel with characters and scenes that draw readers within the first few pages. The novel is not an action novel--but it is a well-paced story that will draw you in and keep you invested all the way to the end--and beyond. Andy's story is filled with emotional ups and downs that allow readers to fully enter his world as a man facing a devastating illness, a husband, and a firefighter. The author does a beautiful job telling this story of strength, weakness, and life through the views of a fire department family.

Readers Should Expect an Emotional Read. This book will tug at the heartstrings. It is impossible to read this story and not feel every emotion the characters face. The novel is so realistic that it is relatable to almost any reader and fan of dramatic fiction. It is incredibly relatable to those in relationships with emergency service personnel. When a novel brings me to both smiles and tears--it has done its job to transport me into the characters' world.

Would I Recommend Brotherhood by Fire by Lindy Bell? This book is one of the most realistic, emotional, fictional novels I have read in a long time. Brotherhood by Fire is the first novel I have read from Lindy Bell, but I love her writing style and the real world she creates. If you enjoy a dramatic story that will bring some tears and maybe even some more profound life realizations--this book should definitely be on your reading list.

I received a copy of this book from the author or publisher. All opinions are my own.

Brotherhood By Fire is one of those stories that stays with you long after you turn the last page. It is deeply emotional, grounded, and incredibly human in the way it explores love, loyalty, and resilience when life takes an unexpected turn.

At the heart of the novel is Andy, a character whose journey feels raw and real. His battle with cancer is not just a physical struggle but an emotional one that ripples through every part of his life. Watching him navigate fear, strength, and vulnerability makes the story feel intensely personal. What makes it even more compelling is how these struggles impact his relationships, especially within the fire station, where brotherhood, pride, and pressure collide in powerful ways.

The dynamic within the firehouse adds another layer of tension that elevates the narrative beyond a personal story into something broader and more complex. It explores what it means to be strong when everything is falling apart, and how identity, especially in high pressure professions, can both support and challenge you in moments of crisis.

What truly stands out is the emotional depth. The story does not shy away from the hard moments, yet it balances them with themes of hope, connection, and quiet courage. It is about showing up for others, even when you are struggling yourself, and about the bonds that hold people together when everything else feels uncertain.

This is a powerful, heartfelt read that will resonate with anyone who appreciates character driven stories, emotional honesty, and narratives that explore the true meaning of strength, love, and brotherhood.

Brotherhood By Fire by Lindy Bell is a deeply moving and emotionally charged novel that goes far beyond the surface of a typical firefighter story. At its core, it is a raw and honest exploration of love, vulnerability, and the difficult choices we face when life takes an unexpected turn.

Andy is a compelling and relatable protagonist a man who appears strong on the outside but is quietly unraveling within. His decision to hide his diagnosis from his wife, Katie, is both heartbreaking and frustrating, highlighting the complex nature of love and the human instinct to protect those we care about, even at a cost.

What makes this book truly stand out is its emotional realism. The strain on Andy and Katie’s relationship feels authentic, and the tension is palpable as silence and misunderstanding begin to take their toll. At the same time, the camaraderie within the firehouse adds depth to the story, showing the powerful bond of brotherhood, even in the face of personal struggles.

The author does an excellent job of portraying the internal battle between pride and vulnerability. Through Andy’s journey, readers are reminded that true strength is not just about endurance, but about honesty, acceptance, and connection.

This is not a fast paced, action driven novel it is a heartfelt, character driven story that lingers long after the final page. It challenges you to reflect on what truly matters in life: love, time, and the courage to face reality.

Highly recommended for readers who enjoy emotional, thought provoking stories about relationships, resilience, and the human spirit.

Brotherhood By Fire is the first book I have read by the talented author,Lindy Bell. After reading this one, it definitely will not be the last. I was hooked into Andy’s story within the first couple of chapters. I was intrigued with him, found him to be relatable and wondered what was going to happen to him in the end. I had no way of predicting the outcome at all. This is one of those books that will toy with the reader’s emotions. I warn other readers to keep their tissues close by because if they are anything like me, I guarantee they are going to those tissues handy. I did not want to put this book down. I had no problem reading the whole tale within two evenings. I got little sleep those two nights but it was well worth it. I loved every single page.

I am giving Brotherhood By Fire a very well deserved five plus stars. I believe readers who enjoy reading about the lives of firefighters and for those enjoy reading well written fiction will want to pick this one up. I would love to read more like this one by Lindy Bell in the future. I will most definitely be keeping my eye out for their future releases. This one was fabulous.

I received a paperback copy of Brotherhood By Fire from the publisher but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

I was drawn into this from the start and was intrigued by Andy and his story and I couldn't stop reading because I wanted to know what would become of Andy.
This author has an authentic writing style which I love, with likeable relatable characters.

Andy loves being a firefighter,he also loves his wife Katie. When Andy is diagnosed with cancer his world comes crashing down. Andy doesn't tell Katie of his diagnosis as he is trying to protect her but surely the truth will come out and how will Katie feel?

Firefighters face a mirage of dangers but this is an invisible threat that Andy may not beat.

If you read this book I urge you to keep the tissues handy and be prepared for a rollercoaster of emotions from ups and downs to joy and heartbreak. This book kept me engaged all the way through and I really felt for Andy and Katie.

Lindy Bell writes so well that you can't help but feel a part of the story. Although I cried through allot of this it was truly a pleasure to read. I cherished this beautiful book and I believe you will to. If this sounds like something you would like I encourage you to read it you won't be disappointed.

Brotherhood By Fire stayed with me in a way I didn’t expect. Not because of the diagnosis itself, but because of how Andy carries it quietly, almost stubbornly trying to protect Katie while slowly creating a distance neither of them knows how to bridge.

What makes that shift work is how unforced it feels. Nothing is exaggerated. The strain in their relationship builds in small, believable moments, and you can still feel the love underneath it all, even when they’re no longer meeting each other the same way.

The firehouse adds a kind of pressure that’s easy to recognize but hard to escape. It makes Andy’s silence feel less like a choice and more like something shaped by who he’s had to be for so long.

There’s a confidence in how this story is told it doesn’t reach for emotion, it lets it settle. And because of that, it lands where it should.

A deeply felt and quietly affecting novel.

Lindy Bell does an incredible job bringing Andy to life you feel his love for Katie, his dedication to the fire service, and the quiet struggle he faces after his diagnosis. His choice to hide the truth adds a layer of tension that feels raw, real, and heartbreaking.

I especially loved the firehouse dynamics. The bond within the C shift crew felt authentic and strong, while the conflict with Lt. Mike Bentley added just the right amount of pressure and intensity.

A friend of mine recommended Brotherhood By Fire by Lindy Bell, and I didn’t expect it to hit me as hard as it did. What starts as a story about a firefighter quickly turns into something much deeper an emotional, honest look at love, fear, and the weight of unspoken truths. Andy’s journey feels incredibly real, especially the way he struggles to protect his wife while quietly falling apart himself.

The firehouse scenes add intensity, but it’s the personal moments that truly stay with you. It’s heartfelt without being overdone, and powerful in a quiet, lingering way. Definitely one of those stories that sticks with you after you finish.

Who doesn’t love a story that involves firefighters? I know I do, especially if you get that and a romance that is teetering, but still clinging on with a passion and a few unforeseen turns in life, some bleak and some not.

Overall, a very well-written and brought to life story, it captures the moment well and really makes you part of the whole rollercoaster ride. the characters are fully created, with lots of detail and personality, which is so important to really creating something you can become part of.

This really was a wonderful read, and one I enjoyed start to finish. I highly recommend.

Overall, I really enjoyed this story. Katie and Andy are so cute together, but there were times I just wanted to shake them, sit them down, and talk to them. They're both strong in different ways, and I loved seeing Katie grow and evolve. Andy's personal journey is obviously different, but no less important. This was a really powerful story, and there were times I smiled and time there were tears in my eyes. The pacing was mostly consistent, with a few slow parts. If you're looking for an emotional story, grab a box of tissues, a cup of tea, and curl up with this book.
