Full disclosure: as the image voice of an internationally syndicated, weekly Bible prophecy program heard around the globe, I have introduced the author, Ron Rhodes, countless times in the ten-plus years I’ve helped produce the hour-long broadcast. As I recently told Dr. Rhodes, in the seven decades we’ve been attending churches, I cannot recall one Sunday morning message that dealt exclusively with Bible prophecy. Sadly and totally anecdotally, I suspect that may also be true in far too many fundamental pulpits across America today. It’s been said that more than a quarter of Scripture deals with prophetic events that have happened or will happen, and yet, those passages are largely ignored by far too many Bible teachers and pastors.
That is why a book like “Basic Bible Prophecy” is so needed and so necessary for the times in which we now live. In this 220-page tour guide, Rhodes takes the reader on an organized journey through Scripture to discover the who, what, when, where and why of Bible prophecy. Before launching his prophetical tour, to answer the question, “how is Bible prophecy important?,” Rhodes lists seven benefits for studying prophecy. The author presents his material in five parts, each part answering questions you may have about end time events. Following the question, “How can we make sense of Bible prophecy?” Rhodes answers each question in turn: who are the primary personalities of the end times, what are the primary events of the end times and when do they occur, where in the world will end time prophecies unfold and why does God give us prophecies of the end times? Like a well-organized and simplified text book, at the end of each chapter, Rhodes concludes with “the big ideas” presented in that segment and application questions for reflection.
A major takeaway for this reviewer? The countless scriptural references Rhodes includes in these pages to document and prove his major points. “Basic Bible Prophecy” stands on solid, biblical ground!
From a solely personal application perspective, Rhodes’ last three chapters may be the most important to the reader. Here the author lays out the answer to the question, Why does God give us prophecies of the end times? As Rhodes explains, Bible prophecy should motivate the reader to live expectantly, righteously and with an eternal perspective. In a perfect world, those would be three reasons enough to make this required reading in every household on the planet!
