uhh this was fine. a friend gifted it to me (and i suspect it was regifted from someone else. the glossy pages are easy to read without bending or scuffing anything).

it's full of encouragement and life advice, but it's all super simplistic. none of the surprisingly profound words of wisdom like in everyone's a aliebn when ur a aliebn too, for example. and i really don't care for casale's art style.

probably good for a quick and easy cheer up, and maybe it's more enjoyable for kids who haven't already heard various iterations of these life lessons many many times before.

Ur special is one of the books that I will remember forever. (Yes, I tend to forget the books I read before). Not my intention, though.

Ur Special is a non fiction about that focuses more on reminding us us to face our fears, our anxieties and our self consciousness head-on.

Danny Casale has 2.63M subscribers on youtube. I enjoyed most of his work. He likes to share everything he learned and that’s what I love about his videos. When reading Ur Special, I can hear his voice in my head.

Ur Special has a lot of life lessons and we need it every day especially when we are feeling down. Danny Casale made it fun while giving us advices. The narrative is so heartwarming and funny at the same time. It's so enjoyable to read! So, we already know what Danny Casale's personality is. I particularly loved the contents in Chapter 1: ur not alone, chapter 4: ur missing someone, chapter 9: ur self and chapter 14: ur human!.

Did I mention that this book is cute? It is so cute and so colorful. Every pages are illustrated and the illustrations are so cute. The Naked Cat is just adorable.

Overall, this book is a light read and suitable for all ages.

Thank you Times Reads for sending this book to me in return for an honest review.

I really enjoyed the author’s Instagram content back in 2020, and thus received this book as a gift. It’s cute and fun, but definitely screams “cash grab” at times. It’s sort of self-care content, meant to be inspirational, but it’s very surface level, and I didn’t leave knowing anything that I didn’t know before.

"You know, I never thought about how small Earth is. But lookin at this map, I'm realizing that there's so much out there that I often don't think about. It makes all my problems look pretty small." [10]

"I like going to the movies alone because I really enjoy the quality time with myself. I feel like alone time isn't nearly as socially acceptable as it should be. People think they should feel sad for those who are alone, like it's a weird thing to do. Don't get me wrong, I love when I get to see the people I care about, but I also love being alone. You get to learn about yourself and think about things you never thought about before. It's like going on a date with yourself!" [14]

"Occasionally having a bad day or two is just what we signed up for when we were put on this planet. It even makes us stronger once we overcome those bad days." [17]

"What I'm saying is... there's so many beautiful things about you. You just have to stop being so critical of yourself. Accept yourself for who you are. Notice all the incredible qualities that you have, even though you /think/ you don't have any. That's just your rotten thoughts trying to trick you, and you sholdn't pay any mind to those. Instead, pay attention to the positive thoughts you've been ignoring for so long. They are there, you just have to listen to them. They've been desperately trying to get in touch with you!" [21-22]

"Losing someone you love can feel like you literally lost a part of /you/. And as tough as that is, missing someone means you have been given the chance to LOVE someone... and not everyone gets the chance to love somebody.

The fact that you miss someone means you had amazing times with them. Which is a million times better than not having had amazing times at all. Itõs okay to miss someone because that means you have /loved/. And there's nothing wrong with that. Is there?" [36]

"It's easy to forget, but everyone is going through something in life. We spend a lot of time thinking about ourselves and our own problems, and when we catch someone being rude or grumpy, we like to assume the worst. But sometimes they are just having a bad day." [74]

"Even the sourest people have their reasons. We can't control other people, we can only control ourselves. So why not try to be the best we can be?" [76]

"All too often, those who reject help are the ones who need it most. Maybe, if you just show him what help looks like, we can break through his defensive barrier and make him feel so much better." [108]

"And in the end, you'll be glad that you did get that help. Because it makes things more fun and worthwhile along the way. Life doesn't need to be harder than it is!" [112]

"Some days I wake up and feel tired right away, like the world is trying to pull me down. I always try to do the things that make me happy and energized, and sometimes they work. But on the days when they don't work, it spooks me into thinking that there's something really wrong with me." [124]

"We only get one chance to be here, and we might as well do it with a smile. You should love everything. You should love your friends. You should love life. And most of all, you should love yourself... because you are you, and you are amazing!" [167]

Ur Special is simplistic, and sweet. It tells important messages using adorable characters. Ur Special provides readers with a little bit of childhood again, when everything felt okay and before people became cruel out of their own insecurities.
However, whilst it was sweet and fairly meaningful, the oversimplification meant that the advice you’re reading isn’t really advice at all - they’re messages, which you can choose how to interpret, and how to follow. Everything is perfect valid but it’s also the kind of messages you see in every single movie and book - in limited depth, with little exploration. I understand the purpose of this book was just to create a simple feel-good book that readers can appreciate and connect to, which is fair enough. It achieves it’s intention - though somehow, I can’t help but feel like there’s nothing to set it apart from anything else.
The illustrations are very cool though, and I do enjoy the writer’s videos.

I got this at a white elephant Christmas gift exchange and thought, "If I don't read this now, I'm never going to pick it up and it will sit on my shelf forever." It does make a great "bathroom" book so that's where it ended up and 5 days later, I was done reading it.

There's not really much to it, but it's cute and you can't knock the message. It was occasionally funny and I love the complete creative abandon with which it was written.

Suggested for readers much younger than me, who are maybe trying to figure out who they are and what life's all about. I, of course, already have all of that figured out and am completely in control of my own destiny. :)

[Review copy from Times Reads]

First of all, congratulations the author for this petite, reading pleasure! This couldn't have come at a better time. With the pandemic, life has been upside down on many levels. This book is a small but GREAT reminder of everything that still makes sense.

From one colourful page to the next, Danny takes us on a journey of self RE-discovery through cute characters. His illustrations are simple, but that's exactly why they're fitting. Their personalities and the overall book appearance carry the message across smoothly.

I smiled upon reading several pages. Some literally reminded me that no matter what happens, there's always another side of the coin, regardless of how rusty the surface gets.

If you pick this up, be ready to experience fun confusion - are you watching a still cartoon? Flipping through a comic? Reading a self-help book? All these elements are bound together for a quick, easy read.

Why this book would be the perfect 2021 wrap-up/2022 kickstart:

🌈 It reminds us of little things we often forget.
🌈 The illustrations alone will spark joy.
🌈 It's a bookish shoulder to lean on - for some reason, flipping through this book eases dynamic loneliness.

The book covers things like being more understanding, acceptive, mindful and more. All tools which, I believe, cultivate resilience.

A well-deserved rating. I reckon this could do wonders to readers of all walks of life. I urge you to check it out just so you could add a little spark in life 😉!

okeeee well this was okay!! i picked it up bc i have been goin thru a tough time and i wanted a short lil cute read and i think it delivered. it was just some lil reminders when you’re feeling ugly or alone or sad or worried or missing someone. it reminded me to take a second to slow down and remember the good. it got me thinking about my younger self and how maybe on the surface it doesn’t seem like i’ve made it where i want to be but… i think about that lil 100 pound 14 year old that apologized for every emotion she dared to even write down and i know ive made it somewhere. i’m hugging her. i’m remembering i can only keep going and keep looking for good. i don’t want to get to the end of my life feeling like i have felt lately and at other really hard times in my life. this reminds you to find the good in the moment, in your friends, and in yourself. be confident and love what you do and who you are and then what does it matter what others think!! others that are probably self conscious too!! everything’s okay. ya got time, ya got good things, ya got friends and love and beauty everywhere. with that being said the delivery was stupid and the advice was surface level.

fave quote:
There will always be someone you'll be missing or something you'd wish was better. That's just what we all signed up for. But being in a constant state of worry means you're never in the state of living in the present.

Mini-poster inclus.

Ur Special is everything I’ve come to expect from Danny and more – wildly creative, relentlessly endearing, perfectly absurd, and fantastically hysterical. This -200 page illustrated book is a heartwarming narrative that’s the perfect balance of humor, life advice, self-improvement and art.

Buy this book for your kids and then steal it for yourself, as it’s great for all ages and the perfect reminder that life is beautiful.

I’ve been a fan of Danny’s work since he was filming YouTube videos in his childhood bedroom 12+ years ago, and he never ceases to amaze. This is an incredibly promising foray into the publishing world and I’m proud to say I bought his first (of many) book.

I have been following Danny's work since 2019, I have always wanted to buy his merch and reflective stickers but couldn't. When I got to know that he is publishing his very first book, I had to buy it.
Ur Special is not only a book but a series of short life lessons told through intriguing characters making it very fun-loving. This book is for people of all ages, be it a kid or an adult everyone can take something from this book and the message it wants to send out in the universe. This easy-to-read and understand book can be finished in one seating but I preferred reading one chapter a day so that I can feel the warmth for a little longer.

I really enjoyed how casual and bite-sized this book was. The simple art style made it goin to look at. I think I’m going to practice drawing like this in my next bullet journal page. I really liked the realistic internal conversations I have with myself. I loved that each character was a different personality. I would love to gift this book to my friends and I want to share this with my partner. What a simple but encouraging and authentic book. I’m happy I found this book :)

I chose this book because I needed a non-fiction book to read for my library’s winter reading challenge. I wanted something fun and this looked like fun, so I picked this up. Um, to be honest this book was weird as hell. Like seriously weird to where it is hard to describe it and this book. The main takeaways I took was that we shouldn’t judge ourselves to others, give ourselves affirmations, make new friends, and to love yourself.

Gifted by a friend, based on the author’s Youtube videos, they’re simple thoughts regarding mental health, approaching insecurities, self-worth and existentialism. With a lot of light hearted funny jokes and the simplistic and charming art style it’s a entertaining light read. If you like his videos you’ll like the book.

Cute and sweet, this is a great book to give as a gift to a friend who's feeling down. It's definitely weird, with an offbeat sense of humor, but there's nothing offensive in it. The cartoons are crudely drawn, that's part of the artist's signature style, I found it quirky and charming. The text is pretty basic, nothing innovative here - but delightful all the same.

This book was an early Christmas present and it may be for a younger audience, but I enjoyed reading everything it had to offer. It’s a book that’s a gentle reminder that there’s only one you and you have to take care of yourself while we’re here.

This book is such a sweet reminder of how human we all are. It doesn't exaggerate any advice when trying to motivate and sticks to keeping it simple and cute. I was feeling very down one day when I picked up this book to read. Some positive advice about life from a naked cat was all I needed.

It’s a little wacky, but then I thought maybe it’s for young teenagers or adults. It’s quite quirky with funny bits in it but I don’t think I’d recommend it to my friends!
