I always connect with Ruiz's works. They are, to me, personally truthful and helpful in their simple optimism and insight. Ruiz manages to say things that are "big" in very simple ways. I read this in short bursts over a couple of months and each paragraph gave me something I felt I needed to think more about. It's a "self help" book that I think anyone can relate to.

Here, Ruiz takes on the archetype of "The Actor" and applies that to the reader's life and experiences. Aren't we all acting all the time, in a sense? Aren't we improvising every day? Isn't 'acting' also a way of getting to the truth? How we see ourselves, how we perform as the "character" of ourselves, and how we can become our true selves unencumbered by the roles others have assigned us are really just a few portions of this book. What happens when we step out of our 'character' and try being a genuine person? Ruiz has a good understanding of the work of professional actors and how the metaphor of their craft is germane to each person's life.

I liked it.

The premise seems to be focused around being your authentic self through the metaphor of an actor on a stage. The earth is our stage and we are all acting a certain part or parts that were shaped by those who raised us and those who influenced us. One of the key take aways for me was to no longer place so much value in the beliefs and roles we live with on a daily basis and just "be" without judging ourselves, others, or actions from the old stance of a potentially untrue story or belief.

Ruiz vaguely opens a metaphor-lead idea about the self as an actor on the stage of life. The premise of a University campus with the reader as the student and Ruiz as the teacher is a bold move which, I feel did not pay off; as I find that when an author writes directly to me, and tells me what I do and don’t do, and how I feel or fail to feel when a given situation arises, irritating.
Given that Ruiz mentioned many times throughout the book that we all experience life and it’s multitudes in unique ways, he has managed to lump the human experience into a cookie-cutter outlook where we are all simply blank canvases, and suggests that in order to live authentically— we stay that way.
There are also a few contradictory ideas within; for example, reminding the readers that we are constantly performers on display, being judged and perceived always, then telling us that nobody truly cares about what we do, as they’re rarely paying attention to us at all, anyway… hm?

However I did gain a few lovely tips on ascending “the actor within”, which in truth was why I picked the book up; but in the end I spent 158 pages re-reading a metaphor about acting and creating art and this hedge-maze life of mirrors, which lead me further into confusion than when I picked up a book that so confidently PROMISED to help me clarify and refine my character on my stage.

I will risk sounding self-entitled and arrogant (speaking authentically) by saying that perhaps this book was written more for the people in my life who look to me for answers, rather than for me.

Acting is mostly reacting. We’re always in reaction, and there are many ways to react.
Reacting is an artistic choice. By now, you favor certain reactions over others. You may even feel those reactions define you. Performing is a learned skill. You picked it up even before you mastered a vocabulary.

Don’t you repeat your favourite narratives over and over, to the discomfort of everyone around you?

We put on a predictable show. We are seasoned actors following old scripts. “I don’t know why I say that stuff,” we may reflect afterward, but the next performance is the same. So, too, are the apologies and justifications.
You’re capable of doing more than following old stage directions. You can rewrite the script. You can also improvise. Experience informs the things you say and the choices you make, but so does imagination. So does ingenuity.

If you’re afraid to hold your little lamp up to the truth, you’ll remain an enigma to yourself: the mystery you’re least willing to solve. Childhood fears fall away, but grown-up fears last a lifetime if they’re not confronted. What you’re able to see in yourself you’re able to see in everyone. And seeing is the essence of art. It’s important that artists study themselves. It’s important that you do.

Listen. Observe. Trust life. Go your own way, while respecting the ways of others. Accept situations as they present themselves, and respond honestly. Do you welcome the unexpected? Can you manage disappointment with grace? If not, make these your new disciplines.

Your behaviour is so automatic that you may not notice most of what you do and say. You may not even be curious about it. You’ve learned your responses by heart the way you once memorised popular songs and multiplication tables. And now, maybe those responses rule you.
When was the last time you listened to yourself and questioned what you were saying? How often do you make a fresh observation—or say nothing, rather than saying something predictable? Do you dare correct yourself, or admit you have no idea what you’re talking about?
Outside opinions shouldn’t control your thinking. Pay attention, and you can change the way you react. You can discard a few outdated beliefs. You can have pleasant and unpleasant experiences and remain emotionally stable.

You can improve your relationship with words by selecting them consciously and creatively.

Protect yourself from your own abuses, no one can do it for you.

Love is every artist’s most compelling motivation.

In the theologian sense, to be impeccable means to be without sin. For you, the artist, it’s a sin to go against yourself. It’s a sin to disrespect your art. Imagine yourself as impeccable—how would that look and sound? How would you move through the world?

Well, imagine saying what you mean and doing what you say. Imagine you’re someone who never assumes, but asks and then evaluates. Imagine that you can listen to criticism without reacting defensively. Imagine doing your best, and that your best efforts evolve over time.

Written beautifully through the metophor of actors seeking an authentic life away from the calamity of over-rationalising one's performance. The traits of someone who is authentic allow themselves to be taken in some dreamlike fashion to the beauty and mystery of life itself. The book was captivating and written blissfully. I felt as if I was taken away to drama school to learn the secrets of self-love and care for humanity.

"How would you behave if you no longer needed to please an audience? What if you weren't afraid of being judged? You'd listen better, would you? You'd relax and observe. You'd delay your reactions and focus on the moment. The entire tone of your performance would change."

Yes. You have to remove yourself from the literal picture of being an actor and allow the story to fit into your own scenario. I mean, I'm a teacher... and I can still relate to the ideas explored in book.

I felt a giddy happiness after reading 'The Actor'. It was a good read.

“The Actor”

You are acting all the time.
You believe the roles you play.
You believe the roles other people play.

Be impeccable with your words and actions.
Don’t take things personally.
Don’t make assumptions.
Do your best in every moment.

1.) continue to grow in awareness (Awareness)
2.) keep evolving, both physically and spiritually (Transformation)
3.) will is strengthening (Will)

Spiritual mastery is about transcending the main character of your story. It’s about seeing beyond your immediate environment and expanding your sense of reality. Mastery for a professional artist means the same. Professionals lose themselves in their art. They document what they see and imagine what the cannot see. They awaken other artists like you and I, and make us aware of thing we hadn’t yet considered. And awareness grows over time.

Corto y easy to read.

This book is a lighthearted and insightful guide that invites readers to see life as a grand stage where we are all playing roles. With warmth and humor, Ruiz encourages us to shed limiting scripts and embrace our true, creative selves. His playful yet wise advice helps us rewrite our "performance" with more joy, freedom, and authenticity. It's a refreshing reminder that life can be both meaningful and fun when we stop taking ourselves too seriously.

I liked this book quite a bit. I think it was a really well-done way of applying the Toltec Wisdom from the Four Agreements, The Fifth Agreements, etc. into a relatable use-case and metaphor that is easy to understand, and also has layers and layers of insights. It didn't have any "new" insights from the previous books, but it was super easy to read and relate to, and provided plenty of new perspectives and examples to support the concepts.

love this book! i am a huge fan of this author and his wisdom, especially after reading the fifth agreement. i decided to pick up this book and i am very happy that i did! it discusses the philosophy and importance of the authentic self, using the “actor” on a world “stage” as a symbol. he uses clear and concise language to talk about complex topics. i highly recommend!!

Never be afraid to love. love will never hurt you, it’s how you respond to love that hurts.

I wish i could give this 4 and a half stars. I like this much more than the four agreements and really honestly changed the way i viewed my emotions.

Also the book roleplaying like you’re in school is funny.

😐 so irritating - authors’ direct writing to the reader, their metaphors, their contradictory statements; so vague, so confusing. and the good stuff I already know (e.g. no one is judging you, everyone is too focused on themselves).
