This is It is a practical meditation guide that uses humor to teach the benefits of mindfulness through a series of accessible techniques. It’s also a hilarious account of one man’s attempt to find peace in a chaotic life, and follows his journey from the bogs of Kildare to the bright lights of LA, and on to enlightenment in India. However, despite traveling the world he found that much of the wisdom he discovered had parallels in Irish attitudes to life, that there’s an intersection between ancient wisdom and what Irish people lick off the stones.
Now a meditation teacher in Berlin, Morocco and Dublin, Conor gently and skillfully explains the lessons he’s learned along the way to finding peace, and with warmth, wit and wisdom guides you on the path to a more mindful life.
I was born in Ireland and now live in a small village towards the south of Berlin called Rixdorf.
I worked as a war correspondent reporting on Afghanistan and Kosovo. As an artist with my very own show at the Schwules Museum and now a writer.
But I've also worked as a barman, a painter, a pizza chef, a trawlerman, a brickie, a chippie, a sparky, an art dealer, a drug dealer, a teacher, a fruit picker, a dish washer, a carnival ghost, Martin Amis' babysitter, an ambassador to the world's newest country, a delivery man in a long white van and a star of Polish television.
Such a wonderful, witty book on meditation and buddhism grounded in the Irish experience. You can tell the author is young and distinctly critical of modern 21st century capitalism that leaves us exhausted and always in a hurry, making this leagues ahead of any spiritual/meditation book that tells you to “just relax”
I loved, loved, loved this book! It's thought provoking, wise, and funny. Even if you never intend to meditate, this book is for everyone who has any interest in discovering how their mind works and how to tame the parts that work against you.
This was such a refreshing read on mediation and the language was just perfect for and Irish bigger lol. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It was very unpretentious unlike a lot of books on this subject. I think anyone reading this would enjoy it immensely but Irish readers will especially love it.
You can always tell a fellow Vipassana meditator, they have such a clear way of expressing things. Through the book, I kept getting the words ‘start again’ in S. N Goenka’s voice. That and the bell. It has imprinted my soul beyond measure. Conor concludes that really, no one can tell you what it’s like- but he provides such a great description.
I love how he describes meditation as ‘scientific’.
Internal observation is vital at this time. To rid the neuroses, but unfortunately it’s a difficult task to do correctly. Plus, patience is on low supply these days.
I know what a great help this book would have been for my younger self, seeking- and I will definitely pass it forward.
I don't know how else to say it, other than this book came to me at the time I needed it. I wasn't looking for a book on meditation, a classic case of the title catching my attention, and when I read the description thought it would be more memoir than instruction.
From the start this book captured me with its simplicity, wit, wisdom, and practical approach.
Very few books make the move from library borrow to purchase, this is one that I wanted to be able to come back to again, and order is on its way.
A new fan for the author, patiently awaiting a new release.
Listened to this on audio and like the narrators voice and accent. Great amble through the authors journey. Difficult to know if I would know how to meditate on finishing if I hadn't read other books on same subject.re35
Listened to this as audiobook. Unsure if it is different as a book. Loved its simplicity. Makes meditation sound so simple and, in essence it is. What a wonderful way to describe it. Makes you want to try it rathe than get bogged down in how to and so on. Just do it. Great book.
A must read for any Irish person who is trying to incorporate mindfulness or meditation into their life. It’s a short book that’s not pushy in the slightest. Very easy to read and concepts easy to apply. The Irish references are very relatable and some of them are hilarious!!
Got me thinking about my relationships with my parents.
Found the guys delivery a bit annoying but in the Spirit of the book I think I should look into why I found it that way rather than complaining about it
Really enjoyed this book by Conor on meditation- Irish style! Meditation can feel like a lofty goal that’s only attainable for Tibetan monks but after reading this book- I’ve changed my mind! THIS IS IT - we only have now, so I’ll make the choice to be present in this moment. Good work Conor!
After years of thinking meditation might be too mentally complex for me to take up, Conor Creighton completely demystified it for me in an accessible, clear and straightforward way.
