Lily has been alone for most of her life. Held as a captive. Used as a weapon.
The mercenaries who ‘rescue’ her are as intriguing as they are brutal, but Lily is still a pawn in the games of men. They’ll use her and cast her aside if she lets them. That’s if she survives what comes next…
Quin, Commander of the Dark Army, has only one goal and will let Lily die if it serves his purposes, but he’s also drawn to her in a way that makes him wish for more. No one is safe from Mad Mal, a monster who kills to satisfy dark needs. He will make her pay for tempting the other beast he hides within. And the playful Bastian seems harmless, with a taste for wine and women, but he might just harbor the darkest soul of them all...and the darkest secrets.
Each man has his own twisted torments and fierce desires that Lily cannot fathom after her years a captive. But as the days and nights go by, she begins to realize she needs something she never thought she’d have and it may not be the freedom she always yearned for at all.
Can she unlock the hearts of these men who care for nothing and no one to find the pieces of themselves they buried long ago, or will they decide their mission is more important than the woman who brings them to their knees?
Kept to Kill is the third standalone in the Dark Brothers Series of dark fantasy romance. If you like strong, but desolate heroines, antiheroes that make your blood run cold even as it heats up, and your Happily Ever Afters with some darkness before the light, you will love this book.
Read the next dark adventure in this amazing series today!
Authors Note: This story contains knife play, angst for the FMC, and, although she can hold her own, things are not great for Lily at first. If you don’t enjoy that kind of story, continue at your own risk.
**You don’t need to have read the other books in the Dark Brothers series to enjoy this book, but it helps.**
Kyra was 18 when she read her first romance, 19 when she left the US for the UK, 20 when she decided to stay in London, 25 when she met her now husband, 30 when she got married, 31 when she had kid 1, 33 when she had kid 2, and 36 when she was diagnosed as autistic.
She now lives a few miles outside London with her husband, the two (likely neurodivergent) kids, and a cuddly cocker spaniel named Patch who likes to roll in bird crap.
Not all of her stories have neurodivergent FMCs but representation is important, especially when so many women are not diagnosed until well into later life!

Kept to Kill is the third book in the Dark Brothers series and features Lily and her men Quin, Bastian and Mal. Lily has spent so much time being a captive and a pawn for other people's uses because of her touch of death curse. Anyone she touches dies a gruesome death and so many see her as an advantage against their enemies. When Quin and his brothers kill her captor and take her she trades one prison cell for another and Quin sees her as a way to slay his enemies. Despite his attraction to her he refuses to see that she is more than just a weapon to him. Mal and Bastian see what she could be and start forming a bond with her.
Quin is the quintessential alpha male with a chip on his shoulder, Mal is the crazy one with animalistic tendencies and Bastian is the softer yet no more dangerous one with secrets. Living a life of pain and guilt Lily clings to these Brothers and they bond so she can't hurt them. But can their bond mean more than just a convenience?
First, again this cover is so pretty. Second, while I liked this one I think the previous stories were better. I was missing some backstory on Lily and would have liked to explore her character more. I didn't feel as much chemistry between the characters mainly because there was MM in here. I love MM but it definitely overshadowed Lily's relationship with the Brothers and their bond. Ultimately I just didn't feel as much of a connection with this story and the characters as the previous books. There was a good amount of steam and an engaging plot and I look forward to the next book!!
Just when you think you have the series figured out,Kyra Alessy comes with yet another twist! Ok,i know the world the Dark Brothers live in by now,and i know there’s something going on,that’s not….good, but still. Having read the ARC’s of the first three stories, and their epilogues, has planted me there,in the middle of everything that’s happening, and i love it! Even if i’m worried about the dark forces that are trying to destroy this world…..
Lily has had a lonely life for too long, only being allowed out of the room the Collector kept her in when she was forced to use her curse. Sure, she wasn’t hurt while being under his control, but abuse comes in many shades. When Quinn’s soldiers found her, they planned to drag her out and put her to use in his camp. Only,it didn’t work out that way….and two of them die while trying. When Quinn finds out,he’s sure she’s using some kind of trick to kill instead of believing her explanation. His brothers Mal and Bastian aren’t sure what to make of this slip of a girl, but all three soon find out she wasn’t lying. Quinn sees a weapon he can use in his next assignment. Bastian is drawn to her,but hides it underneath a casual attitude. Mal….Mal wants to hurt her, until he doesn’t,and that in turn makes him angry.
Lily feels she’s gone from one evil master to the next, and the only way out seems to be death. Until Bastian touches her…..and lives. With Mal being who he is,Bastian convinces Quinn to bind her to them as her fourth. But will Mal be able to resist breaking her without killing her? Being touched, being close to others without killing them is filling Lily with a wonderful feeling, even if those touches are painful at times, and she longs for more. With the assignment going south, actually…with the assignment being something they’d never sign up for,the entire situation changes. Does that mean Lily’s death? Or will the Dark Brothers she’s come to care about in spite of everything, save her? Do they care enough to want to? Or was she just a means to an end after all…..
This was a rollercoaster ride that had me crying, cursing and wanting more of those hot moments until the very last page. And after that,i still need to know more! When is Caught to Conjure coming,Kyra? Please tell me it’s soon? Please?
I've been unhealthily attached to the dark brothers thanks to Kyras writing skills, they ensure I don't stop reading until I'm done (like doone done, epilogues and all) You think it'd get repetitive, but it doesn't? Can't wait for the next :))
Another top-tier dark romance fantasy from Kyra Alessy
I’m super thankful to have received this as an ARC for my honest review, and I’m going to be HONEST- this book is amazing. I have been a long time fan of the Dark Brotherhood series! Lily, Bastian, Mal, and Quin were all very interesting and brilliantly written characters. Do I have an unhealthy attachment to the Dark Brothers? Perhaps ;) I’m also very into KA’s style of writing so I have to commend her on that.
If you’re a fan of dark romance, this series is a must. I’ve already recommended it to all of my friends and it’s something we can’t stop talking about.
I LOVE the dark brothers! I can’t express it enough. I love the style of writing, I love the innocence and curiosity and excitement that are so much more realistic than just pure innocence that a lot of romance authors try to convince you their character is. I’m also a HUGE fan of the M/M action in these stories as it’s different and it’s not always about the “main” character with the “main” guy. Love all of it.
Lily was a joy to watch grow as a character. I wish there had been a way for her to learn to control her power i stead of what was used in the end but it was a great story and watching her relationship with the guys made my heart race. 5 star read for sure.
Kyra draws me in with her writing and I can't stop reading once I start. It is a dark reverse harem romance so be warned but it's a fantastic story and the build up kept me hooked from the beginning. Amazing story!
Lily is cursed. Anyone she touches, skin-to-skin, dies horribly and painfully within two days. So when she's removed from her tower refuge and catches the eye of the Commander of the Dark Army, she exchanges one master for another. Quin is the one of the youngest Commanders in the Dark Army's history. He lost one of his Brothers thanks to the machinations of the previous Commander, and now he and his other Brother Mal must get used to the newest member of their trio, Bastien. Lily is dragged into their fracturing unit due to her 'gift', and although she's meant to be their Fourth, Quin treats her as a slave and a tool. Lily is forced to endure more than she should, and it's mostly due to Quin's treatment of her. This is the book where you know there will be more to follow. Threads have been unravelled, questions asked yet not answered, and characters introduced yet not fully explored. Keep reading. You'll thank me.
Freaking loved this!!! Alessy writes the most amazing dark romantic fantasy!!! Her characters are AMAZING!! The dark brothers are, of course, Dark, Broken, Sexy, Alpha-holes, but then comes along a woman who integrates into their hearts, becomes their fourth (through a blood bond, which is magical) and these men are still dark, sexy, alphas, but they become healed, loving and as a unit they become stronger and closer to each other. I always pick a favorite, but in this book I find it the hardest. I love them all!! If I have to pick, I guess I’d say Quinn. I loved Lily’s character, she is really broken and been mistreated and she can’t touch anyone or they will die!!! This story is FANTASTIC!! I feel like each Dark Brothers’ book gets better and better!! And there is so much going wrong in their realm, I can’t wait to finally get answers to what is going wrong with the portals and the wards!! Not to mention why gods are disappearing on the mount!!! The world building is picturesque, creating such detailed mental images that you can picture yourself there!! I feel like I say this in each review of her books, but she is an INCREDIBLE writer!!!! If you haven’t picked up this series yet, and this is your cup of tea, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you start that first book, and I guarantee you won’t want to stop the series!! I’m really looking forward to the release of book four!!! Thank you for writing this series!!!
I ran into Kyra Alessy quite by accident, but I'm entirely glad that I did. It's been a long while since I was able to find a new author who takes themselves seriously while writing reverse harem. There's certainly been a progression through the first three books of this series, and I think Kyra is finally finding the pace she's comfortable with.
Kept to Kill follows the known pattern of three Brothers, each with their own secrets and a fairly broken captive that becomes their Fourth. More than previous novels, there was a focus on the world building, the foreshadowing for connecting novels and the unravelling of a bigger mystery. I liked the easy going Bastian, dark and dangerous Mal and the ever conflicted Quin, though I probably wanted to hurt Quin quite a bit as well. Lily is such a sweet girl and broken in so many ways. But in the arms of her three Brothers she finds peace and herself at long last.
I have now read all the books in this series. It was an endurance challenge to be sure. Not because it was slow because it was not.
There is just so many things that was wrong with these books. I will try to get to them all.
The first book in the series didn't really go with the others. The other characters tied into the other books. It was only in the last book that the characters from the first book are seen again. And only for a brief insignificant moment. As if the writer realized it and added that part to tie them in. One of the things in the first book that bothered me was the MFC inherited an estate. A beautiful well kept estate. But she chose to live with her men in an old rundown forge. 🤨 Why??
All the books in the series flowed well until the very last were the ending was so rushed it was unbelievable. Things that never were explained. Other things that needed to be unpacked weren't. The book were not long enough to fully explain the things that should have been explained. As if the writer got bored or just ran out of steam.
I would say that this series could have been great with more effort but it couldn't. The writer can tell a story well. But there is a constant problem in all her books. Even in her other series. The abuse all the MFCs went through in these books was so horrible. Many times the abuse was inflicted solely by the MMCs. Unforgivable things. The only people who I think could understand and relate the the MFCs is someone suffering from stockholm syndrome. To be abused this severely and not only be able to forgive and forget but also fall in love with the person or persons doing it is a warped reaction.
The spicy scenes were not. They were for the most part assault. Luckily the were rushed as well.
I must say reading this series and another by this writer makes me concerned If she truly believes the things that she has put in these books as acceptable in a relationship. It points to accepted abuse.
It concerns me that many young writers now day are writing books like this. There is already to much violence against women in the world. All these books do is gives the WRONG people the idea that all women truly want to be treated this way. It's all fun and games and fantasy until someone really gets hurt. I don't like the thought of books being banned but if things keep going in this direction I fear it might happen.

*spoilers* Really really really pissed that she literally never actually sleeps with the two who were good to her and waiting almost the entire book. Just the jerk. Very happy the author branched into MM stuff but WTF. LIKE WTF. The ending was rushed asf. So was bastian admitting he was a goddamn god. So brushed over and barely talked about once revealed. I’m honestly fuming. They literally talk about how the can’t wait to actually “take her” once the leader does AND THEY NEVER GODDAMN SHOW IT 🤮🤮🤮🤮 honestly im so pissed off because the beginning of the book was so good and then it’s like at the end she (author) just gives up and forgot everything she had written and zoomed past it all end ends it. Why? So we’d have to sign up to her emails and read the goddamn epilogue that jumps way later. This author puts so much emphasis on her heroines being virgins and first times and then will either just not even show the first with some in the group or make it the most glossed over three sentence bullshit after so much build up. Idk if it’s laziness as she gets to the end of a book or what but I’ve read 6 now and they all seem to do the same thing as you get further in. Or maybe she’s a procrastinator and waits too close to her publishing deadline. Idk but after this many books I can’t believe it’s happening. Even the actual climax of the plot scenes are just one page muddled together things.

This was a decent book. It had a plot, good character development. Can't say it was steamy or even sexy though there was a little bit of sex involved. (M/f, m/m). I had hoped for more answers regarding the portals, wards, Realms since this is the third in the series. Still no answers though. The storyline was good enough, boring at times, and at times a character's 'reflection' went on and on and on for pages. I skipped through so many pages; I just stopped caring how Lily felt or what she had to say after reading for the fifth time how she worried about her gift/curse, and how she wondered if the guys liked her. I really liked the development of Mal, liked learning about Bastion, and was frustrated with Quin. Lily I liked, sympathy sized with, grew bored with, liked again, grew irritated with, and then just accepted her character was what it was. Questions: when someone died, their body was burned to ash, how did they return to their body? What had he bet Galai? Like I wrote, this book is good enough, great if you hadn't read the first two already ( but characters from first two books make an appearance). Readers should be warned this book involves Knife play, descriptions of attempted/actual rape, dubious consent, belting, spanking, humiliation, severe beatings of men and women, and m/m sex.
This girl spent most of her life reading books on the realm but all they wanted from her was her death touch and sex and she was ok with that?!? I`m all for strong men taking charge but this one just made me hate Quin (even at the end) and be a bit disgusted by the extra mysogynistic tone of this book. Example, she's upset about something not related to sex, don`t help her with that, just bend her over, she`ll feel better after. Orgasms fix alot of stuff, but not everything. She was never a true fourth, she was just a bound f#€k buddy with a gift. Maybe Quin will redeem himself in the epilogue. I liked the first 2 (though a 21 year old virgin slave is a bit far fetched) so i'll keep reading and hope for some strong female charecters and men who get taught how to treat a girl right (hopefully at the end of a knife or a hammer)
It's hard to say I enjoyed this book because there are some very dark themes in it. Lily is great. She's strong and cares about the harm she can do with her gift. I liked Quin, Mal and Bastian but their treatment of Lily and women in general is appalling.
The world they're in and the mission they're on is intriguing. I got a bit lost at times but I'm reading this series out of order so, my bad! This is a standalone but I think it would help to read in order for sure. There are crossovers with other Brother units and reading book1 would help establish the world.
It's arousing at times and there is fair amount of MM. I thought it was rushed a bit towards the end after going along at a nice consistent pace. On the whole I thought it was a good read but I'm not sure if I'm ready to continue in this dark world.
I must say I don't seem to like the way the books in this series start, but oh how I love them when things change. I love the world building that is starting to slowly take shape. The fact that the women partners in each book are encouraged to find their strengths, while also learning to be able to depend on their team, is fascinating. I would love to see more of the previous characters in future books. At this point, I hope the series doesn't conclude for a long time.
I enjoyed this read and getting to know Lilly and the unit thought I was going to really like Quin but turns out I liked Mal more then Quin.... Was glad everyone got their hoa and that lily reunited with Kane but would love to see more of the units interacting together to defeat whatever great evil is coming.
Turning Mad Mal into a loving man was my favourite part of this book. I didn't really understand Quin's plan for using Lily's abilities though and there wasn't much info on why she had to kill those men but it honestly didn't really matter because the interactions between them all were fun to read.
This one was different and I didn't know if I liked it or not. It felt like it took waaaay too long for everything to click and then it wasn't enough. I loved the MM action that had only been implied before, but had such a great impact on this story. It was nice seeing that fleshed out, but I wished there was more of them being an actual unit altogether by the end of it.

I read book one thinking it was going to be another "formula romance"... but I was wrong. The female characters are all strong women & I love the over arching story of the "dark realms" & the struggle to control it. Looking forward to the rest
The strong FMC and the love they all develop for her is worth the wait. Mad Mals character development is just done right. I absolutely love the dynamic between them and the fact that FMC is quite literally soo strong.
