More like a 3.5 star for this volume in particular. The entire series itself I give a 4 stars!! This final volume felt a bit rushed... Which it also was written in a jump from 2017 of the 5th volume to 2021... And as you can guess, COVID-19 comes into play at the end. This volume also felt really jumbled in terms of story.
This series overall though was actually very enticing, extremely educational and entertaining!!! Think of it as Osmosis Jones meets Dragonball Z to some extent. If you like either one, or both like I do, you'll love this series. My favorite volume of all was volume 5. The story was truly brought together and made it a very interesting read, zipped right through it. It also was the largest volume in the series. Kind of thought volume 6 was unnecessary, but nonetheless still had some entertaining bits to it. Learn something new every day, in this particular series, behind the human biology! Now every time I get sick or scrape my skin, or get a cut, I will always imagine the little cell workers in my body being at work!!! Best way to handle sickness or an injury!!
4.5 stars, i’m so sad this series is over! i really liked the story with the basophil, i thought it was really sweet and gave us an idea of their life as kids and kinda reminded me of summer camp. i think the bits about covid and psoriasis could have been more fleshed out, but overall i really enjoyed this! it was also interesting to see how a sponsorship fit into a manga, i had never heard of something like that before this.
The final volume and we're still learning about new cells in the body! First off is Megakaryocyte, also know as the platelet's mom. Then we get another look at Basophil. And then we move to the eye and face a problem that I'm actually kinda concerned about. Then there's a special chapter about Psoriasis (which is something I'm probably going to get because it runs in my family) and a final chapter about Coronavirus 2019.
After reading the psoriasis chapter and the COVID-19 chapter, and noticing they both involve overactive cytokines, I'm a little nervous, but I am definitely glad the final chapter is in this book. I feel a lot more knowledgeable about what COVID-19 does in the body and why it's so dangerous. So, get vaccinated so your immune system will have a leg up (go read volume 3 if you need a reminder that vaccines are important), and wear a mask in public to reduce the chances of getting infected in the first place.
And on that note, please, be safe and take care of yourselves. Bacteria, viruses, disease, and health issues are very real dangers and your body is doing its best to keep you alive. This series has 6 volumes. For more content like this try Cells at Work! CODE BLACK which discusses adult health issues or Cells at Work! Baby which covers the health of newborns.
In this final volume of Cells at Work readers learn about the roles of platelets when there is internal bleeding, then a story arc tells about the different roles of neutrophils, eosinophils, and basophils and how they all start out from the same type of stem cell and then differentiate over time, then Red Blood Cell tries to deliver oxygen to a rod cell in the retina but it is dying and the body is about to go blind of regressive degeneration in the eye but a cutting edge treatment saves the day, then Red Blood Cell delivers oxygen to a epidermis cell while the body is suffering from psoriasis and sees the destruction that can cause firsthand, and finally, the body catches covid and the immune system must work overtime to fight it off.
The back cover says this is the final volume in this series, which is sad. It does such a great job of teaching readers about the immune system in very creative and memorable (and scientifically accurate!) ways. I like how the adventure fighting covid helped readers really understand how it can be a fatal disease and what it can do to the body in worst case scenarios. The cutting edge treatment for regressive degeneration is fascinating to learn about.
Notes on content: I think it was 12 minor swears by the end. No sexual content. The epidermal cells are dressed in swimming attire, and one girl cell is wearing a fairly small bikini. There are battles between cells and invaders that depict a fight with blood, and earthquake-like events that injure cell characters represent upheaval caused by blunt force trauma and psoriasis.
RATING: 2.5/5 If you like Cells, COVID-19, and Stemfit you maqy like Cells at Work! Vol 6
QUICK REVIEW The final volume was unfortunately a lacklustre sendoff to otherwise a 5/5 series. Rather than having a dramatic high energy finale, we instead get a short story about COVID-19 which did not feel all that interesting. I still think this series is a 5/5 but for a final volume I really expected more.
REVIEW If you would have told me this is the final volume of the series I would not believe you. This volume felt more like a random collection of stories than the final volume. You would assume that the final volume will culminate to a big epic event but instead the final chapter on Covid-19 was short and I found lacking in the information side. I also wished they brought back more characters introduced before to give a proper sendoff. All in all if you had to skip a volume it would weirdly enough the last one.
Black edition. Apakah akan kita lihat bagaimana semua sel tewas bergelimpangan?
I've been away from the series for a while and it was nice to dive back into things. This collection of stories (and medical conditions) was pretty solid, although you also feel like they're reaching the end of the "character" stories for our protagonists. Things are just happening and it's a lot of excitement but it also needs a bit more to feel like a fuller narrative.
The sort of special one-off stories on key conditions (including the very visual COVID story) were great and I appreciated what they were trying to do. These are full-on PSAs on the different conditions and I hope they help somehow.
Last volume of this series. It was good like the others. It was interesting seeing how the stem cells were used to help cure a weakness in the body. And we finally find out why the body is having so many problems with getting injured! The last chapter was about getting a coronavirus which was interesting.
Content notes: some violence as the immune system kills bacteria. :) Nothing else. The science is a little higher than most middle school students will understand, but they may enjoy the story on its own.
I’m this wonderful final installment of Cells at work we see the hard working cells deal with one of our biggest threat right now Covid-19 *gasp* I’m so sad this series is over as it’s one of my favorites I’ve ever/read but I’m so glad I got to go on these adventures with the wonderful cells and learn how my body works Over all I give the whole series 5/5 and I will be crying about to everyone I know
Really loved the conclusion to this short series as it has both a completed feel while still being open ended and it's rather fitting that it wraps up with a really relevant disease. Art style is consistent throughout the series and the conditions are all very different (problems are not always basic viruses). The arcs and stories are all fitting and there is always a different focus and something new to learn.
All the familiar immune system cells are back and ready for action! After dramatically dealing with near-blindness and giving us a beach episode on psoriasis, Cells at Work! appropriately closes out with a battle against the scourge of our time, COVID-19. The series ends on a note of optimism that should encourage all of us to keep fighting and rebuilding no matter how difficult the road ahead.
I discovered this series when I took my classes to the first library visit of the year. This is a fun, mildly educational manga series that imagines the different cells in the body as human-ish characters and the scenes portraying typical actions of each of these cells. The series focuses primarily on the different types of blood cells, introducing some different types in the last two volumes. I think the series could have continued but I understand why the mangaka ended it here.
A pretty good send off. We get some origin for Basophil. There is a crisis over going blind with some stem cell therapy. The skin cell setup was fun. And the crisis of coronavirus. The coronavirus was done well, but most things have been well communicated in this series of edutainment. I enjoyed this whole series.
This was adorable and awesome. My sister has a type of psoriasis so it was really interesting to read what her cells are doing that causes her spots. Novel Coronavirus was surprising. I was really happy seeing this chapter cause it's a current event that affect many and this was a good way of breaking down and explaining it.
This one brings it right to 2022 by discussing the novel coronavirus in addition to a bump on the head and psoriasis. My favorite characters play a major role for the bump on the head (the littles who are the platelets). Everyone working together to keep the body running swell.
Now I think I have to actually WAIT for a seventh volume. Ho hum.
what a wonderful ending to such an amazing series. i loved this volume a lot, it’s one of my favorites of the series. i always love to see the Platelets and how they work. and it’s always fun to see Red Blood Cell do her thing to protect the body. 10/10; wonderful.
Such a nice conclusion to my reading experience with this series. It was also understandable that this series would tackle the concept of coronavirus in the end, just looking at when it was published. It handled the topic in an interesting, fun, and a positive light.
