Not Too Late #3

Midlife Mojo

Rate this book
A PARANORMAL WOMEN'S FICTION NOVEL

from Rita Hayworth
I have a daughter who knows nothing about my life in Hallow Hill and she's coming for college holiday break. Her visit will dovetail the Solstice Court Meet. It will be close, but if all goes according to plan, I’ll be out of magistrate robes in time to meet the plane.

The problem here is that I have to include the qualifier if all goes according to plan, and I ask you. When has anything in my life ever gone according to plan?

It may be too late for super shiny hair, going without a bra, or sleeping eight hours without a potty break. But it seems that it's not too late for navigating magical politics, expatriating, romance, and saving the world.

I didn't like this one as much as the previous books in this series.

Firstly, I've been lukewarm about Kier as the love interest. It seemed too easy, too fast, and I have half wondered if this wasn't all some elaborate fae trick. In this book, he's condescending and dismissive about some very real concerns Rita has - the Jersey Devil, the stone, the prediction about her daughter. So dismissive that it's like he thinks she's some overwrought, hysterical woman. It was shocking to me. Across the series, Rita has impressed everyone with her compassion and kindness, her ability to roll with things, and her awesome handling of cases. But now she's being virtually patted on the head and dismissed? By the love interest? Wtf?

Secondly, bleh on her daughter coming in. The cool thing about this genre is older women getting to be the star - a second chance at life where they finally have the chance to put themselves first. And this series has been that until this book, and I've enjoyed the heck out of it.

Enter Evie, precious daughter of precious preciousness.

That's not what this genre is supposed to be.

This series is laugh out loud funny in so many ways. The magical world created by Victoria Danann is so clever and would certainly appeal to any woman! The Hallow Hill residents are all so unique, quirky and a kick! You never know what is going to happen. The dialogue is fast and the use of famous movie and t.v. lines keeps you on your toes and are too funny. The "Court" and Rita Hayworth's (yep, that is our heroine's name) handling of each outlandish, magical case is clever and unpredictable. Just an outstanding, fun series! Start with the first book and read them all. You won't be sorry!

Ohh, a little plot twist!

It does end in a cliffhanger, so be warned.

It's nice though, we have Rita's daughter coming and, as to be expected, some things happen. Can't say I was surprised, but it was still really nice and cute.

This series is the definition of chick lit

Warning: This book should be classified YA!

First of all: I like the plot and thought it was somewhat original. I bought all the previous books. Now I'm not sure if I'll continue.
That's quite sad, because: I like the plot as said. Everything else is horrible and it gets worse from book to book.
I really struggled to finish it and had to put it down quite a few times because I was getting exasperated with it (mostly with the minute details of inconsequential daily tasks and cloths and the superficial thinking of the heroine).

Plot 3 out 5 stars.
Plot originality: 4 out of 6 stars.
Characterisation 1 out of 5 stars or less.
Editing: there are quite a few editing problems: typos (in the paid kindle version) and plot disruptions

This is NOT a book for grown women. This book should be classified as YA where the heroine is in her forties. She could be in her teens and nobody would find a difference regarding her behaviour. Problem: she neither thinks, acts or talks like a grown adult. She behaves like an incredibly spoilt teenager who is sure to be the center of the world and everybody accomodates her. She believes to be liked no matter what and treats others in a condescending way where her opinion is superior and everybody else is wrong or needs to change. That's actually a lot of it: she expects everyone to change according to her wishes and whims. Her behaviour is adolescent, superficial and completely selfish. The idea that people would just let her behave like that and adore her is so out of reality that it just doesn't make it even remotely believable. It's as if a 13 year old was imagining the perfect adult life and then wrote it down. Yeah - life doesn't work that way and people neither.

The whole book is a klichee - from taking baths in candle light to walking outside with dogs etc. .... And I've done both and not just once. It's not such a big deal at this age. And I AM in my mid-forties so I know what I'm talking about.

The other thing is fashion: one quarter or more of the book is fashion related. No, I don't care why that particular shade of whatever colour would go better with this particular shade of a different colour and this type of boots. No, cashmere socks in rubber boots will not keep your feet warm in the snow, you need alpaca socks for that (yes, I know this from personal daily experience). And no, I don't care what cut a jacket has or which material goes best with another. The descriptions of what who is wearing when and why is increasing in every book and gets more and more annoying.

Also: having dogs is a joy, yes, walking and playing with them as well. But writing so often about this and getting repetitions of that over and over again is irritating.

Keir is getting on my nerves slowly as well. No man, expecially someone as old as he is supposed to be, would fall in love with a shallow, selfish, immature and neurotic woman as the heroine. And no man behaves like him either. Unless he is a dog turned human. And that's how she treats him actually ....

All in all I'm giving the book 2 stars for the plot itself but I would give minus stars for the above mentioned rest.
I can not in good faith recommend this unless you have an abundance of time and like YA in which the teenager lives out an ideal dream of a supposed adult life ... then go ahead ......

I'm really sorry if that review might be offensive to the author - it's my honest critique a bit brutally undiplomatic and I hope to read better in the future ........

A shrill Rita and annoying daughter

This installment of the Midlife book series was not as enjoyable as earlier novels. The introduction of Rita’s daughter Evangeline to the story caused decreasing character quality. Rita became the stereo typical overbearing mother. Evil represented as an overly precocious immature daughter. Kier was just too perfect.

Love love love

Love this book and series! It just pulls you in to wanting more and more. I was so intrigued that I thought I was watching it in real life. These two main characters are a hoot together and make it possible to imagine how they effect each other. I can't wait to see what happens next!

Magistrates Rock

I love Rita being a magistate! She is rockin’ that job, changing fae laws, making waves in the magic kind world! I especially loved when she gets a case regarding Asgard! No spoilers but at the end of the case, let’s just say swooning for Keir 100%. So exciting. This book was just as light hearted as the previous books which I enjoy extremely much. Light comedy as well, which is awesome. Mischief and mystery towards the end that sets up nicely for the next book

Midlife Mojo was another fun paranormal read. Rita's daughter comes to visit early for Christmas which throws Rita into a panic. The village residents come together and decide to let Evie in on their secrets until she leaves. The court cases were both intriguing, humorous and sad as Rita does her best to sift through the details. Kier lost a few points with me in this one because of his cavalier attitude about Rita's concerns but he redeemed himself during the final case of Court Meet. There is a cliff hanger at the end of this book and the next book doesn't release until April.

Still awesome - still Harry Potter for adults, Can't wait for the next book
BUT I'm finding myself irrationally distracted by this IMPOSSIBLE concept of a day trip from the Lakes to Oxford that Rita and Evie take.

I know this stuff OK!
I live just over the Scottish border a stone's throw from where the fictional village of Hallow Hill is set. The Lake district to Oxford on a light traffic day by car (even if that car is Romeo the paranormally influenced) takes a minimum of 4 hours. Any time there is actual traffic that can rise to 5+hours. It once very memorably thanks to the constant roadworks on the M6 took me nearly 8 hours.

So the trip with Evie to Oxford, before which dogs were walked and a visit was made by Rita to the shop and where they got back in time for supper at the pub with Keir .... JUST NO. Not without f*cking time-travelling - NO! Not in this or any other world.

Or ... assuming she magically cleared all the roads and ignored the speed limits and zapped all the speed cameras (no mention is made of any of this) - they might have *just* made it there and back - but they still didn't have time to even have a cup of tea in Oxford, never mind wander around doing mother and daughter bonding.

Google maps can tell authors this stuff use the directions bit it gives travel time ... or any Brit would happily.

While on that subject I must say in Victoria's defence that she does a really excellent job of the American in the UK thing and 3 books later this is the single thing that actually made me realise she's not British herself. But ... it still drove me crazy.

I think Americans look at how small the UK is - it's about the size of Oregon - and then forget to include the calculation that says yeah - but we have almost 15 times the population in that same area and that we have about 35 million cars to Oregon's 4 million. And that the Lakes to Oxford includes the busiest (and oldest) motorway in the UK. I'm pretty sure even Romeo can't fix that mistake 😀

This series about a human who has been chosen by the 'Powers That Be' to become the Magistrate of a court that deals with ithe problems of the fae and other magical creature, is getting better all the time. The human, Rita Hayworth, is settling into her role as Magistrate and adjusting well to life in the magical town of Hallow Hill. the characters are quirky, and fun, the story is interesting with heightened tension on Rita's part as her human, college age daughter, who is completely unaware of her mother's magical life, is coming to visit for Christmas break. My main gripe about this series is the abrupt way each book ends. I'm learning to accept the fact that this is just how this author does things, at least with this series. Plus there are some editing issues, more than I would expect from a best-selling author but not bad enough to get me to put the book down. But if you like fantasy, a fun (and often funny) story, and likeable characters and don't mind cliff hangers, you'll enjoy this book.

Third book in the series and I am utterly in love with Rita’s life, living it as if it were mine as I sit, read, and sip coffee while the snow falls outside. Its lovely. My normal genre is the fantasy smutty stuff, so this is a veer off that path, but its so delightful that I barely notice. Anyhoo, I reflect on Rita’s life a lot because its so idyllic. I mean who wouldn’t want to inherit an English countryside village with delightful neighbors, supernatural authority over the regional magical community, and a hot man who shifts into a giant winged lion panting after you? I love the banter between the two of them:

“I’m going to run over and look in on Tregeagle before lunch. Make sure everything is good.”
“You want to take Romeo?”
He grinned. “Does the sun rise in the east?”
“No. The earth spins eastward making it seem to primitives that the sun is rising in the east.”
“I’m a poet. Don’t confuse me with science.”
My eyes widened. “You’re a poet?” I shook my head and laughed softly. “Whatever you say. See you for dinner.”
“Indeed, you will.”

And another scene that had me grinning from ear to ear:
“Her attitude had struck a nerve and I was on a roll. “This,” I pointed at Keir, “is Keir Culain. He’s the love of my life and I’d never have found him if your father hadn’t dumped me. So, for that I’m grateful to your dad. And his girlfriend. May her happiness rest in peace.” That last part was a little catty. I should have quit sooner, but like I said, rolling like a river. When I looked at Keir, he blinked twice and I realized it probably wasn’t the optimal scenario for revealing my feelings and making a dramatic pronouncement of love. His smile grew slowly just before he eased out of the cottage to give us some space…I practically ran back to the house. “Keir!” I said breathlessly. “Right here.” He sat by the kitchen fire and his calm was a soothing balm to my frazzled nerves. “I need a favor.” “You want me to leave.” I scowled. “No. I do not want anything of the sort. I want you to keep her occupied while I run an errand.” “Occupied? Like babysitting?” His eyebrows shot up. “Well… Sort of.” “Are you going to offer some suggestions as to how I do that? Movies? Scrabble? Baking? Tales of the Wild Hunt?” “This is not a time for jokes, Keir.” “But you’ll forgive me anything. You know why?” “Why?” He grinned. “Because I’m the love of your life.”

And of course, the laughing out loud while reading, continued. Victoria Danaan, you would be my perfect author to stalk if you did the spicy stuff as well.

Before it happened, I guessed that King Diarmuid would fall for Rita’s daughter, Evie. It didn’t happen how I thought, of course, but it did happen because that’s what I wanted to happen and Danaan just seems to know me. My absolute favorite part of the book was the case of the Norse gods and the Valkyrie and the banter about it afterwards. And I am over complaining about not getting detailed sex scenes. Victoria does well to tease us and make us use our own imaginations: “After two orgasms that made me see stars and an afterglow that included a full body lingering tingle.”

I am eagerly anticipating the rest of the series and learning about how Evie will tame the bad boy, King Diarmuid.

Rita is settling into her new life and new position when her daughter comes to visit too early.

At this point in the story, Rita is settling into her new life in Hallow Hills and becoming quite the fixtures in town. Her Legendary Lunches are becoming quite legendary and everyone in town wants an invite. Life with Keir is blissful and she has a routine walking her dogs on the moors with Lochlan each day and going to the Hallows each morning. Everyone is excited about the upcoming Yule ball at (vampire) John David Weir’s house.

Her first Court was earthshaking for the fae after centuries of doing whatever they wanted. Now, this new Magistrate is actually creating punishments with real consequences, and she is preparing to choose cases for the Yule Court, which will include of all things a case of a Valkyrie against the Norse Gods, who actually agreed to allow the matter before Rita’s Court.

Rita is content in way she never imagined her life could be. Rita is so excited that after Court week, her daughter Evangeline (“Evie”) will be joining her in Hallow Hill during her college break. Except Evie shows up a week early, before the Yule Court. Trying to hide the fact that the town is full of magic kind was going to be hard enough. How could Rita possibly hide all the extra magic kind who will come in for Court week? And how can she sneak away to do her job as magistrate?

When Maggie comes up with the idea of putting the whole thing out there and showing their true nature to Evie and then erasing her memory before Evie returns to school, Rita jumps on the idea. She would like to share her new life and her new home with the daughter. What could possibly go wrong?

I really like this little town of Hallow Hill and the characters we have been introduced to here. Of course, Evie’s focus of study in college is myths. Really? And this was a surprise to Rita too. It should be. What parent wants to pay for college so your kid can study mythical creatures? What are you going to do with that “Do you want fries with that” degree? And Evie wants to transfer to Oxford University to finish this degree? Considering her studies, Evie takes the news well that humans aren’t the only ones inhabiting this world and is very excited to spend her vacation in a mythical town and watch her mother in Court.

As I said before, it is disturbing how one fae group views another fae group as less and Rita has decided it is time to up the stakes until fae realize they need to learn a little empathy for their fellow creatures. As a no nonsense Magistrate, Rita is already making powerful friends and powerful enemies which will bring good and bad into her life.

This is a very creative paranormal series and I am enjoying it with so many possible storylines but it is a continuing arc so you wouldn’t want to jump into it here in the middle of the story.

Victoria Danann creates such wonderful worlds and such amazing characters. This series is no exception. Midlife Mojo is the third book in the Not to Late Series. In the first book, Rita was offered a dream job (well, my dream job) which included living in a picturesque British village filled with magical beings. She is to be the Magistrate, a human chosen by the Powers that Be to judge disputes between the nonhuman beings. In the latest book she is learning to feel much joy in her new life, building strong friendships, and perhaps even falling in love. Even with the rumours that Queen Maeve is stepping down and that Diarmuid will be the new king, things are going along rather smoothly. She may be shaking up things with her judgments in court, but despite a mad Kelpie, she seems to be winning the support of the community. Then her daughter shows up a week early. And why is the Jersey Devil paying Rita visits at night?
This was a delight read. It was hard to put down and I can’t wait until the next one comes out. I would just love to go to one of Rita’s special luncheons as well as eat at the pub and visit the shops in the village.

That hook though!

Fantastic continuation of the series. I will say that the book picks up exactly where the last left off and does not have any refresher information. This is fantastic if you are binging the series, but a little harder to get back into when its been a bit. That said, I love that about these books as I hate reading pages upon pages telling me the same things over and over.
I love Evie/Evangeline and can't wait to see where her character goes from here. I love Keir. His last scene in court and the aftermath is one of my favorites. I love the way she handles court cases and all of the fun characters that are brought in.
Asgard! I wanted so much more from that whole debacle but, at the same time, what was written was perfect for the story... maybe we could get a spinoff novel(la) later?
I have the next on my tbr pile already. I love this series

Epic Laugh out Loud Romance

Best book of the year! I know it's just the start of 2021, but, it's going to take a lot to top this one! In true Victoria Danann style, she grabs a hold of you and refuses to let go! Just stay for the ride, it's a wild one! It has so many feels! So much humor! This is a stay up all night kind of read! I love going to court. Love hanging with the Hallow Hill residents. This Epic story has a romance that brings warm fuzzies and tears to my eyes. The obvious love fills me to brimming. In true VD style I was laughing out loud so many times! You never know what is going to happen next! So many surprising events! This is the third book in the (Not Too Late) series. Best if you read the other books 1st. If you want to go on the ride of your life, get this book and start reading! From a Forever Fan... Pam James

Midlife Mojo: A Paranormal Women’s Fiction Novel (Not Too Late Book 3) -Victoria Danann

This is the third book in Victoria Danann’s PWF series and I am still out of breath from the constant action, crazy events, magical court proceeding, new magical characters, the daughter’s early visit, an amazing enforcer male partner, the list goes on.
This is a phenomenal series which needs to be read in order.
The mesmerizing world building continues to expand as well as the introduction of new characters, (Fae queens and a Fae King, new realms in fairy and even some from Valhalla).
This is a community of magical beings and objects that continues to draw me in and has a hard time withdrawing from at the cliffhanger endings.
Plus the sassy, kick ass take no prisoner heroine,Rita, is not just a strong heroine but proves being over a certain age is the perfect time to embark on a new life!

Love, love, LOVE this series!

As a woman of certain years, midlife paranormal books are few and far between IMHO. This series is all at once hilarious, charming, witty, and intriguing. I only wish more authors wrote this way. I keep re-reading things because some of it can be a bit confusing if you have memory problems like I do, but that’s ok because I really don’t mind revisiting these stories! Actually, I wish *I* could go on these adventures because I just love the settings, characters, and all the magical whimsy of everything! If you like a bit of snark, wordplay, magical settings and characters that keep you on your toes, along with primary characters with warmth and a bit of brass, dive right in, you won’t be disappointed!

Fun & Fabulous! Discovering Victoria’s books has been like being handed a magically shimmering treasure chest filled with jewels of joy. Devoured all 3 books in this series with total delight. Brilliant imagination & world building. Spot on mature (been there done that) female wisdom & perspective. Love the snark! Great characters & great storytelling. CLEAN editing. I was so disappointed to finish the 3rd book & discover #4 isn’t out yet. THRILLED so many of her other books are also on Kindle Unlimited.

Found Victoria on Kindle Unlimited’s group of Midlife Women’s Paranormal Romance writers. So far, all of these authors I’ve tried have been hits, & are now on my favorites list.

3.5 stars. Rounded down, because it took me way longer to read than it ought to.

After finishing the first two books in just a few days each, this one took me 3 months to read! And I can't even tell you exactly why, other than that I put it down, and then forgot all about it. So I guess that's it for my visit to Hallow Hill this time around.

Like with the last book, my favourite parts by far are the court cases. Absolutely fascinating, and I love seeing how Rita handles everything. I also enjoyed seeing Rita and Evie together, but was more "meh" about the rest of it.

The last chapter ends with a major cliffhanger, and the fact that that didn't bother me or make me curious just confirms my thinking that I'm done with these characters for now. I may return later - we'll see.

Life continues in the village of Hollow Hill. The relationship between Rita and Keir blossoming into a deep bond. Christmas break is coming for Rita’s daughter and she’s coming for a visit. Her daughter is to suppose to remain clueless to the nature of the village folk. There’s nothing like a grown child from a previous relationship to make matters more complex, especially since Rita is the human magistrate of the supernatural community. What could go wrong? Plenty.
Love the story. I strained my eyes from rolling them to much. I recommend you read all of the books in the series. You won’t put them down.

Perfection, almost

How can I find the words to write a review when the book brought pure joy the whole time I was reading it....except for the very last paragraphs? I always find something I like in a book that gets 5 stars, but rarely do I fine myself liking every page of the book. I enjoy this series and I loved this book. There is much court excitement, introduction to her daughter and then there is just Keir and Rita and all the village characters making this one special. It’s going to difficult waiting on the next one to be published. Oh...the almost part...this one does have a cliffhanger (which I abhor).

Oh my goodness. You can't capture the only thing important to her.

First of all, do not take advice from Esmeralda. I mean NEVER. She sets things in motion for sure. Second time for court. Way more interesting cases and Evie is coming to visit right after court finishes. Rita will be flying by the seat of her pants throughout this entire book. All is well that ends well, right? Probably? Possibly? Maybe? Doubtful and worrisome.
This was an exceptional third book in series but, dang it with the cliffhanger. I highly recommend this book, series and genre. Now I must wait impatiently until the next book comes out.

Just when you think you have seen it all in this series, you find out that Rita is going to make a judgement for or against a Norse God, for a Valkyrie.

Rita’s relationship with Kier is stronger than ever, and we finally meet her daughter, Evie, who comes a week early, leaving her mother struggling with how to get all the wonderful citizens of the town in line.

The new king of the faerie is introduced to Evie, and the scene seems to be set for a romance, but beware this book ends with a big cliffhanger, so if you do not intend to continue with the series, i suggest you do not read.

I cannot wait for the next book.

Yule Court week

“A nap is a hundred times better luxury than a pair of Jimmy Choos.”

“The moth cocoon is the strongest hide because the struggle for the moth to break free is what gives it the strength to survive. Our trials our struggles is what shape and form us. Our inner strength is what grows.”
Fun quick reads. I feel like there was a lot of miss opportunities in this series. I have loved everything I’ve read so far from Victoria Danann. I would have loved for the court case weeks to have been delved into deeper. I’m still enjoying the series and hope you do as well.

A great read

I really enjoyed this book. After the last book, I said that that I would have liked more story outside of the court hearings. This book complied with that request. Rita’s daughter, Evie shows up for a visit a week early and gets introduced to her mother’s new world. I enjoyed the interaction between Evie and her mom as well as Evie’s interaction with all the townspeople. This time, the court cases added to the story without being the entire story. I read this book in one sitting and throughly enjoyed it. I can’t wait to see what happens with Evie and with her love interest.

I loved this book so much! Rita is doing well in her role as magistrate and in her place in the village. She has many friends and a serious love interest. She is worried about her human daughter visiting and is shocked when she arrives early. Evie has grown up considerably since Rita last saw her and seems to have caught the interest of an important fae leader. Rita is doing what she does best. She is trying to manage and keep everyone safe and happy. I love that Keir tries to keep her safe and happy! I read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Unique and Interesting

Love This Series. A 40-ish human woman living in a small English town of paranormals. And she is the new magistrate. The judge and jury for all paranormals with grievances. Her cases are interesting, not just to me but to all paranormals. The magistrate is handing out real consequences for paranormals, not just meaningless fines as has been the custom. Her friends are fascinating, and her human adult child, who knows nothing of real paranormals, is coming to visit. Loved the story. Shocked at the ending. Cannot wait for the next book.

Read Straight Through!

I couldn't get enough of fae court with Rita trying to give them heart and empathy. And Evie is also here for an early break from college. All fun!
And there are great surprises you anticipate but still look forward to as the magical people do amuse us all. I had hoped to take a break before continuing the series, but there is a cliffhanger here. I don't like those, but I am interpreting it as the next adventure in Rita's fantastic story.
A fun time!

I just discovered Victoria Danann approximately a month ago and haven't stopped reading her books since. I read all 16 books in Knights of Black Swan Books. I just finished Midlife Mojo and was sad to see I had to wait for number 4. I read Carnal and am now reading Crave from the Exiles series. If book 3 of the Exiles is not out, then I will probably start reading the Witches of Imberly. Entertaining, charming, funny, interesting, strong female characters, strong but sensitive males. So, so I really need to say anymore?

I am Enjoying this Series So Much!

The highest compliment I could pay this author is a true one: Can I go live in your books?
The story line is unique and the characters are well fleshed out. No hysterical melt downs without a good reason.
Rita’s human daughter comes to visit and the village gathers to welcome with a twist from a night time strange visitor. Add a Norse god to the courtroom drama and you have a rollercoaster of twists.

I can only ask the dear author to release the next installment faster.
