Punk Rules OK

Rate this book
Punk Adventure Done Right... What would you do if you found one million dollars in a park? In Punk Rules OK, Meatboy is a beat-up, self-absorbed punk whose only worry is where to find his next six-pack. That is, until he finds an abandoned backpack full of enough spare change to make his every punk dream come true. Drinking, sex and shiny new guitars can't stop dark clouds from forming when corrupt politicians and trainyard thugs set out to put a violent stop to the riotous street party. An anti-hero with a green Mohawk, Meatboy's newfound wealth puts him on the wrong side of an abuse of political power. With the help of his non-girlfriend Paula and squad of hardcore heroes, he sets out to avoid boredom, an early death and any chance of moral redemption. Burn Books' first publication is a drunken, brawling escapade into the everyday lows and squalid highs of a punk life with too much cash. It offers an inside look at a subculture the world loves to ignore and adventure where you'd least expect. Just remember, Punk Rules OK !

I’m one of those so-called PC punks, OK? So the sexism and inanity and the stereotyped Smithers-like gay character bothered the hell out of me. As I read, hoping for things to get better, I found myself caught up in the story and enjoying it. I simply accepted the fact that the main characters were the way they are, and, while I’d never want to hang out with these punks, it was pretty fun to read. I still wish the author had introduced at least a couple of political punks to balance things out.
Anyway, Meatboy, drunk-ass gutter punk looking to get laid, heads to Paula’s place in Vancouver where they head to a show with Silvi. Meanwhile, three punks are on a freight train heading to the city to start a band and they have a fight with two alcoholic, gang-affiliated hobos. Also, a government official is supposed to receive a million dollar payoff from a mob boss, but he goes to the wrong drop-off park. In the right park, Meatboy wakes up from a beating by rednecks and a night of partying. He finds the million dollars and all these characters connect in various ways, of course, as Meatboy spends the money.

Entertaining, to say the least and given the punk culture and the shenanigans from political leaders somewhat believable. Heavy, light reading.

Plot was fun, but the character development was a bit weak.
