DON’T BELIVE HER is a psychological thriller by Jane Heafield.

When Lucy and her husband Tom, married for eight years, arrange a weekend in the country, staying at The Cascade, a getaway cottage to relax and unwind. the last thing they expect is Tom’s sister, Mary, to show up.

Lucy and Mary do not get on, and have nothing in common. They are enemies. Mary refers to her sister-in-law as “Lucifer” (the devil). Mary is very controlling of her brother.

Mary shows up unannounced and wants to see her brother, but Lucy tells Mary, Tom is not there, but had gone on a hike, leaving his cell phone at the cottage. But Mary knew something wasn’t right, and discovered his belongings are missing and there’s a bloodstain on the floor. Mary doesn’t believe Lucy's claims that Tom has left her, and was supposedly having an affair.

When Tom does not reappear the next day, the police are called, and he is reported missing. But Detective Reavley doesn’t trust either woman. Who can he believe?

Where is Tom? Is he dead or alive?

The majority of the book is told in the 1st person by Lucy and Mary following Tom’s disappearance. Mary is convinced that Lucy killed her brother and makes sure everyone knows that. What are Lucy and Mary hiding? So many lies… It’s up to the police team, led by Bennet, to find out the truth.

Mary does everything in her power to persuade the police that Lucy has murdered Tom, whereas Lucy pleads her innocence at every turn. Each chapter is devoted to both women’s account of what happened.

But who is telling the truth?

This was a fast-paced thriller with despicable characters that has the reader vested in the outcome of the story. I enjoyed the tension throughout the story and loved the twists.

The two women have never liked each other. Lucy is 18 years older than Tom. Mary has always taken care of her l ittle brother and Lucy just gets in the way.

Lucy and Tom plan a weekend getaway. Mary shows up to see her brother only to be told he's not there. What she discovers when she pushes her way through the door .... his belongings are gone, his phone is still there, and there's blood in the bathroom.

Amid accusations of extramarital affairs by Tom and violence from Lucy, the tension between the two women come to a head.

Is Tom dead? Did Lucy kill her husband? Someone is lying ... but who?

This is an excellent she said, she said. The intricate plot features two women who are not the most likable characters. It's like a cat fight .. hissing and spitting and yowling. This is a true page turner ... the lies and secrets start on the first page and holds steady until the surprising unexpected conclusion.

I was so close to giving this book a full five stars. However, despite the intriguing opening line, I found the final part of the novel dragged a little, meaning the big reveal felt prolonged and lacking the pace that the rest of the story had.

This book is like watching a tennis match. Heafield expertly blurs the narrative perspectives between Mary and Lucy. Frequently, they overlap one another, continuing the scene from the other character immediately. At times, this was even a switch mid-conversation and also, sentence. Although this may feel like a disjointed narrative, I found I became even more fascinated by each character’s portrayal and their reaction to Tom’s disappearance. It was an interesting way of creating tension for the reader. Heafield immerses you into Mary and Lucy’s perspective that I found I could not disbelieve either: their narratives offer such a stark insight into their personalities that they were both convincing of their attitudes.

I think this narrative switch is what made this relatively straight-forward plot so immersive and fascinating to read. The chapters are rather lengthy but this is because they often switch to a different character in between. This meant that it was easy enough to find a good stopping place mid-chapter – but I often found I did not want to! I completed distrusted Lucy because of Mary’s description of her (especially the nick-name ‘Lucifer’!), but could not see how Tom had disappeared without Lucy’s involvement. Unfortunately for Lucy, the circumstantial evidence definitely mounts against her, despite repeated protestations that she is innocent. Therefore, I could not begin to predict how the novel would conclude.

If you are after a twisty narrative, then this will definitely appeal! Each step through the narrative raises more questions and I could not wait to see what the outcome would be. However, by the time Heafield moves to the final revelations, I thought the initial pacey narrative really slowed. What I expected to be wrapped up rather quickly, the final scenes felt drawn-out and lacking the excitement that the rest of the story contained. This certainly lessened my overall enjoyment of the novel because I did not feel the ending matched the twists and surprises of the rest of the story. Don’t get me wrong, I had not predicted the closing of the novel, I just wanted Heafield to keep the momentum going.

I liked the premise of this story and I thought it was structurally interesting, making it stand out from other crime thrillers out there. Who can you believe when both narrators are just as convincing about their beliefs? The characterisation was credible and I was shocked by how the story ended. A good read.

Niby lipiec, można powiedzieć, że sezon ogórkowy, wakacje, a premier książkowych zatrzęsienie.

Jedną z takich wakacyjnych premier jest książka widoczna na zdjęciu. Zaczęłam ją czytać w ebooku podczas jazdy pociągiem, skończyłam w papierze, popijając mrożoną kawę.

I co mogę powiedzieć?

To książka, która nadaje się na letnie wakacyjne wieczory. Stawia czytelnika przed pojedynkiem dwóch kobiet walczących o mężczyznę. Jedną z nich jest żona, a drugą siostra. Gdy Tom nie wraca z pieszej wędrówki po lesie i nie odpowiada na telefony siostry, wszelkie podejrzenia padają na Lucy, żonę. Lucy stara się wytłumaczyć sytuację, ale ciągle plącze się w wyjaśnieniach, przez co nikt jej nie wierzy.

Nawet, jeżeli zagwostka jest w tej historii naprawdę czytelna, bo po trzecim lub czwartym podkreśleniu przez Mary, że jej brat na pewno nie żyje - i tu czytelnikowi dzwonią dźwięki alarmowe i już wiadomo, kto właściwie odpowiada za tą akcję, to historia była przyjemną odskocznią.

Gdzie leży prawda? Autorka zadbała o to, by zaplątać czytelnikowi w głowie, i pozwoliła dzięki temu, by każdy sam zdecydował, której bohaterce wierzyć. Wydaje mi się, że nawet bez zbytniego zagłębiania się w sprawę mimo wszystko większość moglaby wybrać Lucy. Mary była wulgarną, upierdliwą i irytującą bohaterką już od pierwszych stron i być może dlatego od samego początku wiedziałam, że jest powiązana z zaginięciem swojego brata w jakiś sposób.

first of all I read this novel because i thought that I will meet DI Muller again but unfortunately it didn't happen so the thing i did not like about it is the novel narrative style she said/she said .
i thought that I will get lost in the detevtives work and search and puting the clues togther , the thing is I was very sympathied with Lucy from the begining and when i got deeper in the novel I desided to take her side even if it turned to be the killer, i did not like Marrie from the earlt begining and how she insisted that her brother was dead , i thought all the way that Tom planned everything and when i go deep in it I started to think if Marrie is involved it was very obvious that she wanted evry one to think that her brother was killed even after the video .
Idid not like how the detective Reavly run this investigation he took Marries side all along even though the writer tried to show that he did not .
it could be better then this if the events were told with a different way.

honestly this was almost a 4. it was good in that you hated all of the characters until you didn’t and the end was a twist. it got a bit muddy (pun not intended) at some points and i wanted to speed past those bits.

What happened to Tom?
We follow his wife, Lucy, and his sister, Mary who have always been at war with each other, both trying to figure out what happened to him. Unless, as Mary claims, Tom is dead, killed by his own wife...

This was an enjoyable read overall, even if I had to double check whose point of view it was at times, and the more we get into the story, the more convoluted it becomes.

My take


Lucy and Tom are a couple with the usual differences a married couple has. Mary, Tom's sister hates Lucy and vice versa. So when Tom disappears from the rental cottage Lucy and Tom were vacationing at, Mary is convinced that Lucy has murdered him, and Mary leaves no stone unturned to get anyone she meets to believe this, including the police.


Lucy's story certainly doesn't add up, and there are some large gaping holes in her version of events, she ever keeps changing that version, yet she denies she has anything to do with Tom's disappearance.


The story alternates between the POV of Lucy and Mary. Both the main characters are equally dis-likable, and I am not sure whom the reader hates more. Their rivalry just makes us weary.


Neither of them is telling the truth. But the first person POV spoiled the reliability of the story for me when the final twist came. Like I always say, when the main character is unreliable, the story is better to be read in third person. Because no one lies to themselves in first person. So the ending seems completely unrealistic and far fetched.


The flow of the story was easy and even though the theme was good, and fast paced, the shoddy base on which the story is built takes off its charm.


The cover is beautifully designed, and one star from my rating is entirely for the cover.

Odkryć prawdę

To miała być przyjemna wycieczka podczas weekendu spędzanego w domku letniskowym Kaskada. Ale coś poszło nie tak, bo Tom Packham zniknął i nikt nie wie co się z nim stało. Jego żona Lucy plącze się w swoich wyjaśnieniach, jego siostra Mary, która od zawsze nie przepadała za Lucy, oskarża ją o zabójstwo Toma. Kto mówi prawdę? Kto kłamie? I co tak naprawdę wydarzyło się tam, w leśnym zaciszu?

Nie wierzcie jej to dzisiejsza premiera wydawnictwa Muza. Sama nie wiem co o niej napisać. Lubię thrillery, ale z tym niestety się nie polubiłam. Od początku irytowały mnie główne bohaterki, Lucy i Mary. Nawet nie wiem z czego ta irytacja wynikała, ale była od pierwszych stron. To tak jak poznajesz kogoś, a on cię tak po prostu irytuje swoim zachowaniem, wypowiedziami, rozumiecie, co mam na myśli? Nie podobała mi się także ta naprzemienna narracja, raz historię poznajemy z punktu widzenia Lucy, a raz z Mary, w pewnym momencie pojawia się nawet jeszcze jedna narracja, ale z czyjego punktu widzenia, tego wam nie zdradzę. Nie w każdej książce mnie taki zabieg denerwuje, ale tu mnie irytował.
Co do samej fabuły, to nie jest ona czymś nowym, zaskakującym ani porywającym. Podobne motywy odnajdziemy chociażby w Tamtej kobiecie(wpływanie na czyjeś zdrowie psychiczne) czy Od nowa(zniknięcie męża, który ma niejedno na sumieniu). Samo zakończenie też jest średnie. Przez całą książkę nie poczułam żadnych emocji, oprócz narastającej irytacji. Do setnej strony w powieści nie dzieje się praktycznie nic, potem akcja nabiera tempa, ale dwie irytujące bohaterki, styl pisania autorki sprawiały, że nie miałam żadnej przyjemności z czytania tego thrillera i ucieszyłam się gdy dobrnęłam do końca. Nie wiem ostatnio nie mam jakoś szczęścia do thrillerów.

Podsumowując, Nie wierzcie jej to powieść, która ma odgrzewaną fabułę, irytujące bohaterki, denerwujący styl pisania autorki, średnie zakończenie, mało akcji, prawie brak emocji. Ja nie polecam tego thrillera, ale jeśli jesteście ciekawi, to sięgajcie i czytajcie.

Pewnego dnia w tajemniczych okolicznościach znika Tom. Jego żona Lucy uważa, że mężczyzna porzucił ją dla innej. Natomiast jego siostra Mary jest całkowicie przekonana o śmierci Toma, a winą obarcza bratową. Obie kobiety od początku się nie lubią, dlatego też ich wersje wydarzeń znacznie się różnią. A tym samym wcale nie przybliżają policji do wyjaśnienia zaginięcia. Jednak nowe fakty pokazują coraz więcej tajemnic, których znaczenie jest na niekorzyść Lucy.

O rany, ale dobrze się bawiłam przy tej książce! Chyba pierwszy raz od dawna. Zagadkowa historia zaginięcia, która jest pełna zwrotów akcji, to największe atuty “Nie wierzcie jej”. Od początku przeczuwałam, że historia Toma śmierdzi. Nie sądziłam jednak aż takiego zakończenia. Poza tym bardzo podobał mi się sposób przedstawienia narracji tej książki: przedstawionej z perspektywy Mary i Lucy. Z jednej strony widzimy dwie wersje opowieści, a z drugiej przy opisie wydarzeń zetknięcia się kobiet, że coś tu śmierdzi i jedna z pań to straszna kłamczucha. Mnie osobiście lepiej czytało się wersję Lucy, bo ilość jadu ze strony jej szwagierki było strasznie odrzucające. Ja wiem, że strata bliskiego może przysłonić wszystko, jednak jej zachowanie strasznie mnie denerwowało i na dobrą sprawę wcale nie pomagało policji.

Oprócz tego, że książka napisana jest z perspektywy kilku osób, warto też wspomnieć o sposobie przedstawienia. Każda z nich jest całkowicie inna. Lucy przedstawia historię dość łagodnie, ale i z desperacją przez występujące kłopoty. Natomiast Mary bardzo agresywnie i przy tym prosto. W pewnym momencie wręcz miałam wrażenie, jakby w tym wszystkim też ukazano, kto jest bardziej wykształcony. Zdecydowanie nie miałam problemu z określeniem postaci.

“Nie wierzcie jej” to zdecydowanie książka warta uwagi! Tajemnicze zaginięcie, dużo kłamstw oraz pełno zwrotów akcji powodują, że nie da się nudzić przy tej książce. Sama nie mogłam się od niej oderwać. I dlatego też moja ocena to 7/10.

"Nie wierzcie jej" to tytuł, której sam pomysł na fabułę i sposób narracji bardzo mi się podobał, ale kreacja postaci i sposób prowadzenia akcji, który opierał się głównie na słownej przepychance bohaterek już niekoniecznie.
Tak na dobrą sprawę żadna z nich nie budzi sympatii, co więcej dawno w jednej książce nie przytrafiły mi się, aż dwie tak drażniące bohaterki.
Niemniej jednak muszę przyznać, że po skończeniu tej pozycji czuję lekki niedosyt, bo "Nie wierzcie jej" miała naprawdę potencjał.

Jest to thriller, którego początek rozpalił moje zainteresowanie i szczerze mówiąc liczyłam na to, że w końcu doczekałam się książki, która wyrwie mnie z butów, w której autorka będzie wodzić za nos do samego końca i w której zaciera się granica między prawdą, a kłamstwem z masą informacji i poszlak, które potrafią zamieszać czytelnikowi w głowie, a wszystko od pierwszych stron właśnie na to wskazywało. No niestety, ale moim zdaniem ten potencjał nie został do końca wykorzystany.
Poza tym odnoszę wrażenie, że autorka tak bardzo chciała zaskoczyć czytelnika plot twistem, że zapominała o reszcie i całość wypada przez to dosyć nijako, a same zrzucanie winy z siebie głównych bohaterek i ich dialogi brzmiały trochę na poziomie dzieci w przedszkolu "Psze Pani to nie ja, ona kłamie"

Samo zakończenie teoretycznie wszystko wyjaśnia, ale tak naprawdę nie do końca mi się do siebie klei, zarówno motywacja bohaterów jak i ich zachowanie w momencie poznania prawdy.
Jest to książka, która balansuje na granicy, mogła być prawdziwą petardą i w sumie totalnym niewypałem również, ja mam bardzo mieszane uczucia jednak wierzę, że znajdzie ona grono swoich zwolenników i warto sięgnąć żeby przekonać się po której stronie wy staniecie.

"Nie wierzcie jej" Jane Heafield to historia Toma, Lucy i Mary. Tom i Lucy to małżeństwo, które po kilku latach od złożenia małżeńskiej przysięgi, przechodzi mały kryzys. Mary, siostra Toma, nigdy nie zaakceptowała Lucy w roli żony swojego młodszego brata. Podczas weekendowego wyjazdu Toma i Lucy za miasto do ich domku letniskowego Kaskada, Tom znika. Do Kaskady przyjeżdża jego siostra, Mary. Tajemniczym zniknięciem Toma, za sprawą Mary, zaczyna interesować się policja.
W toku śledztwa ws. zniknięcia Toma, policja odkrywa, że obie kobiety kłamią. Lucy od początku twierdzi, że nie ma pojęcia, co się stało z mężem. Mary w to nie wierzy. Jest przekonana, że Lucy zabiła Toma. Znajduje ślady, które mogą to sugerować, jednak policja uznaje, że są to jedynie dowody poszlakowe, których nie będzie mogła wykorzystać w sądzie aby oskarżyć i skazać Lucy za morderstwo. Mary się jednak nie poddaje. Jest zdeterminowana, aby wsadzić Lucy za kratki. W toku śledztwa, obie kobiety nawzajem kwestionują swoją prawdomówność, a ich zeznania wcale nie przybliżają policji do wyjaśnienia zagadkowego zniknięcia Toma. Na jaw wychodzą kolejne fakty, niewygodne tak dla Lucy, jak i Mary. Która z nich zatem mówi prawdę, a która kłamie? Co tak naprawdę wydarzyło się w domku letniskowym Kaskada? Czy Tom faktycznie zniknął jak kamień w wodę, czy może został zamordowany?

Znika Tom. Nie wiemy co się stało, jak do tego doszło. Więcej światła mogą rzucić tylko dwie kobiety, jego żona i jego siostra. Tyle że obie nawzajem nie przepadają za sobą. Te dwie perspektywy będą się mieszać, splatać, ale która jest prawdziwa?

To byłaby dobra powieść, gdyby nie główne bohaterki. Mocno drażniące i irytujące. Już początek sprawiał mi wiele kłopotów, ciężko było mi przebrnąć, a wzajemne oskarżenia były robieniem przesadnej "dramy". Nudziłam się, a wydarzenia nijak mnie nie interesowały. Ciężko określić tę książkę thrillerem, bo nie było w niej żadnego napięcia, raczej to obyczaj, może z elementami dramatu. Fabuła się ciągnie, zakończenie niby zaskakuje, jednak nie jest to nic odkrywczego. Nie wiem, czy celem autorki było stworzenie bohaterek, które wywołują skrajne emocje - ale jeśli tak, to udało się znakomicie. Jeszcze jeden plus jaki znajduję, to to, że o mężczyznę walczą dwie kobiety, ale nie jest to żona i kochanka, a żona i siostra.

Jeśli lubicie mocną dramaturgię, konflikty między kobietami, ciągłe spory, to tak, ta książka jest dla Was. Ja się nudziłam, a o fabule szybko zapomnę.

Książka Jane Heafield "Nie wierzcie jej" również porusza temat relacji między rodzeństwem. Ile dla brata czy siostry bylibyście w stanie zrobić?

Podczas weekendu, który Lucy i Tom spędzali w domku letniskowym dochodzi do incydentu. Tom przepada jak kamień w wodę. Lucy twierdzi, że się pokłócili, a Tom wróci gdy ochłonie. Mary, siostra Toma nie chce wierzyć w ten przebieg wydarzeń i oskarża Lucy o zamordowanie własnego męża. Kto kłamie, a kto mówi prawdę?

Książka jest mocno zakręcona. Poznajemy fabułę z perspektywy Lucy oraz Mary. I jak to punkt widzenia może zmienić rzeczywistość. Te same wydarzenia zupełnie inaczej wyglądają w oczach Lucy niż Mary. Zdecydowanie ta dwójka się nie lubi. Wszystkie poszlaki wskazują na żonę Toma, jednak Mary również zachowuje się dziwnie. Trochę mi się dłużyła ta książka. Ja bym ją troszkę skróciła, bo konflikt tych dwóch bohaterek stawał się nużący. Można się było domyślić, że mamy tu ukryte drugie dno. Zakończenie troszkę mnie zaskoczyło co sprawiło, że wartość książki trochę wzrosła. Nie mniej była to książka na raz i pewnie nie zapamiętam ją na długo.

🙅🏽‍♀️Wymęczyła mnie ta książka mimo, że bardzo lubię thrillery. Tu mamy do czynienia z zaginięciem Toma. Jest jedna podejrzana, jego żona. Miotająca się w zeznaniach. Co chwila zmieniająca wersję wydarzeń. Z drugiej strony zdeterminowana siostra, która zamiast szukać brata skupia się na walce ze szwagierką. Toma nikt nie szuka.

🙅🏽‍♀️Cała fabuła prowadzona jest w dziwny sposób, bo niby z różnych perspektyw, gdzie każdy rozdział opisują żona lub siostra zaginionego. Nie byłoby w tym nic dziwnego - bardzo mi się podoba wielopodmiotowa fabuła - ale tutaj to w ogóle nie zagrało.

🙅🏽‍♀️ Od zaginięcia Toma głównym tematem jest ciągła kłótnia jego żony z jego siostrą. Wyzwiska i wzajemne pogrążanie męczą. Nie ma to ładu i składu, ostatecznie domyśliłam się zakończenia. Emocji całkowicie brak.

🙅🏽‍♀️Dla mnie ta książka była stratą czasu i nie umiem wymyślić jej zalety ale to nie znaczy, że Wam się nie spodoba.

Two Times The Trouble

This fascinating, well-written mystery story is told in the first person by two women: Lucy, whose husband Tom is missing, and by Tom’s sister Mary. In each chapter, both women tell their verison of the story, and how different these versions are!

Mary’s accusation of what became of Tom and Lucy’s believable rebuttals demand that the reader decide which woman is telling the truth. Or, are both lying? It is not a clear-cut issue. Every time I thought I knew “who”, “how”, and “why”, the author changed it up.

The characters and their actions and motivations were plausible and kept me entertained to the very end.

I could not get through this book. I was 1/3 into it and it was the same crap over and over again. The author just goes on and on and one — nothing intriguing in the first 1/3 to keep you reading =- the same thing over and over and over — the sister and the wife arguing about the same stuff. Actually drove me nuts. I skipped to the end and that wasn’t even good. If you are a fan of psychological thrillers — this is not one of them. This review is really rambling, but that’s just because I was trying to read this book.

So I hate giving up on a book and finding like giving negative reviews but this book is not worth your time. It's al! Between she says verses she says with a bit of a twist at the end such you see coming. You got Lucy accused of winning her husband and you got the sister of dead husband who is just on the coppers the whole time convincing the coppers the wife killed her brother. She shows up everywhere and it's very un realistic and so boring that I had to keep skipping chapters just to get to the end. Do not waste your money or time on this book!!!Worst Book Ever !!!!!!

Who to believe?

I'm really not sure how I feel about this book, ok firstly Lucy, Mary the two main characters both are utterly awful hateful both liars. The story is told by each, alternating chapters. Quite a fast paced story but on reflection I really think it all got a bit silly towards the end. The plot was good until the end although some might disagree. I didn't get the wow factor with this.

Mary and Lucy are sisters-in-law, Mary being Tom’s sister and Lucy his wife. There is certainly no love lost there. Each chapter is told alternately by both of them, and when Tom goes missing each have their own version of events.
I’m not sure how I felt about this book.
There were typos, ‘stories’ instead of ‘storeys’ being an example. The ending got a bit ridiculous and the conduct of the police was unbelievable.

Don't Believe Her

I Wavered
over stars on this one, mainly because it was touted as " A gripping psychological thriller." I wouldn't call it gripping, maybe just a thriller, full of twists. Very well plotted out I loved Lucy, not Tom or Mary, Tom's sister. Mary is a totally a bit**, A few good twists, A believable story line, and an ending I didn't see coming. The last couple of chapters will really twist, so be aware! It's an amazing tale!

Twisted......

Twisted....That is the only word I can agree on with the title of this book. Please, would those of you who write the trailers for these books call it like it is. This was nothing more than a convoluted bunch of words that told a story of a sick headed sister with psychological problems and her spineless brother who was of the belief his sister was was the cats meow. I gave 2** only because I finished it.

WOW! You only need to read the first few pages of Don’t Believe Her to realise the author is wasting no time in making it obvious how much the female protagonists of this thriller despise one another. I felt as if I’d slammed straight into a wall of impenetrable hatred between Lucy, Tom’s wife and his sister Mary, immediately raising the question of WHY they don’t see eye to eye. I could practically see the steam rising off these pages such is the rage emanating from these two women. We first meet this pair at Lucy and Tom’s holiday cottage in Cullerton Lancashire, embroiled in what I can only describe as a stand off. Tom has vanished, along with his belongings, whilst on a weekend break with his wife and his sister Mary is convinced he’s come to harm at the hands of Lucy, accusations coming thick and fast in a barrage of hostility. Both Lucy and Mary are at pains to convince the reader not to believe each other’s versions of events, a great way for the author to grab your attention and keep hold of it. And oh my goodness she certainly achieves that since there is no let up whatsoever in the war between sister and wife from the beginning to the bitter end, both locking horns and refusing to budge an inch. Is Tom dead or alive? Who will you believe? His sister or his wife?

SO many questions spring to mind as we hear from both women’s perspectives. What kind of marriage do Tom and Lucy have? Is it harmonious or fraught with arguments, violence and tension? Why would Tom simply vanish whilst out on a walk, never to return? And why is there blood on the bathroom floor of the cottage and more importantly whose is it? These were just a sample of thoughts racing through my head as Lucy relays her side of the story before my head was turned by Mary’s wild (and unfounded?)accusations. Cagey and evasive, I didn’t trust Lucy in the slightest, her version of events sketchy and unbelievable but then the same feeling of mistrust can be applied to Mary, a character who’s vile not only in terms of her personality but also in her turn of phrase. It’s like she’s demented, hell bent on waging a war of terror against her sister in law that she fervently hopes will lead to her arrest and a charge of murder. What I failed to fathom is why? I don’t think I’ve ever met a fictional character quite so vindictive;if she were a stick of rock she’d have the word ‘evil’ running right through the centre! Notwithstanding her harassment of Lucy I was incensed at the way this woman treats her own father adding to my feelings she’s a very one dimensional character; consumed with hatred and displaying no compassion in the slightest. Can you tell I didn’t like her???

I love a storyline in which it’s impossible to gauge what’s coming next and Don’t Believe Her is full of surprises, every twist complicating matters further. Truth and lies are entangled to such an extent that you can’t see the wood for the trees and there were occasions particularly towards the end where I was completely tied up in knots! Giddy is possibly the best word to describe my feelings as I raced towards the finishing line and enlightenment, seeking answers to the whereabouts of Tom, dead or alive and the reasons for his vanishing into thin air.

So far I’ve commented on my more positive thoughts towards this storyline but it wouldn’t be a balanced review if I shied away from the elements that didn’t impress me quite so much. From the start I battled to get to grips with this author’s style of writing. I admit I struggled with her use of language, not being a fan of slang nor the crude terms Mary uses to describe Lucy. HOWEVER that is my personal preference and some may argue it’s in keeping with the kind of characters portrayed here but it did detract from my overall enjoyment of the book.

My major criticism of this storyline lies with the police investigation element and DI Reavley himself. I realise of course this is a piece of fiction and allowances need to be made regarding plausibility but the ways in which this investigation is conducted and the manner in which Aaron Reavley behaves towards Lucy and Mary defies all credibility. For me these scenes just don’t ring true and it’s a shame because essentially the premise of this thriller is sound. The deeper I became immersed in this duo’s battles and the search for Tom and the truth the more events seemed to take on a farcical nature. Without divulging too much detail, there are aspects of Mary’s life that only serve to enhance this feeling and even though I can understand why the author has chosen to weave this unusual situation into her backstory unfortunately it didn’t work for me. However it is crucial in terms of tying up all the loose ends and whilst I’m not sure what I expected of the ending it’s a fitting conclusion to what I found to be a twisted, dark and at times surreal storyline.

I’ve deliberated back and forth over how to rate this thriller overall. For the premise alone I would tend towards 4 stars but because of the language used, the lack of credibility concerning the police investigation and what I consider to be some strange and unnecessary twists to the plot I’m afraid to say it’s a paltry 2 stars from me. Had me gripped

From the first chapter I was hooked.could not put down. I am from Yorkshire so had a good imagination for all the places it could set.real in depth descriptions of each scene. Jane knows exactly how to keep the reader guessing what could happen next but also the little details that you question...but they do get answered.

Don’t shy away!

I wasn’t too sure about this book. You get two different view points. Both telling you the other person is lying. Turns out both are.

Buckle in for a crazy ride! You’ll always be guessing but you’ll never be sure. Even on the last page I was expecting something to pop out and change. I definitely recommend this.

Although I found this psychological thriller a good plot, very unusual, I did not actually like the writing style. There is something about it that irritated me; whether this was the vitriol spouted by Mary or just her really unpleasant character I don't know. Suffice it to say it was well-written enough for me to have quite a strong reaction.

Mary was the most unpleasant character I have ever come across. I read the 1st few chapters then skipped to the end to find out who was lying. Glad I didn't pay for this rubbish.

Probably one of the twistiest books I've ever read

I struggled to like any of the characters in this book, they all seemed a bit dark.
It took a while to get going, but I was not expecting that ending at all.
Just when you think it's wrapped up, bang another twist!!!

What a great story! It had me guessing right from the start. I had my doubts about all three main characters on and off throughout the book so the writer definitely keeps you on your toes! A rollercoaster of a book with well written characters you get invested in.
