A body is found in a park in the middle of Glasgow. Arms and legs bound by strong, thin wire, small cuts made in the neck and the groin, arteries severed. The murder was surgical, the methods used fastidious and precise. Four days later, another body, another woman, a different park, the murder committed with the same surgical precision.
The city, slowly trying to emerge from the throes of a long, cold, deadly winter, is thrown into panic, and officers are called from all outlying stations to the centre. DS Hutton is given speculative leads to follow, people who might have known both victims.
And so it is that he comes to interview Dr Crispin Thebes. Retired art dealer, a man who sits at his workshop window by the Clyde, making model ships from scratch. Exact replicas, made with immaculate care. Surgical. Fastidious. Precise…
"An underrated writer with an eccentric, blisteringly satirical voice.” SUNDAY EXPRESS
As Hutton goes about his business of being a detective who has put alcohol in custody, murder goes on. Fantastic writing from Douglas Lyndsay once again, with Hutton's inner narrative threading through and occasional bursts of unexpected hilarity.
Another cracking read. The author knows how to keep the reader engaged. The character development is sublime. Already looking forward to book seven in the series.
Some parts of the novel were excellent others not so , the main character presents his story so you are involved third hand and not in the moment which spoiled it for me but we are all different and you my find this the high point ! I found the book dragged , the plot was good but could have been sharp ended up by less mind wandering the character was explained although not fully and little background was given to strengthen the appeal of sgt Hutton or his role going forward not sure if this is a series of novels not sure I want to find out !
Firstly I am amazed that Goodreads does not recognise the second DS Hutton Box Set that this story is from, not the one that I previously reviewed! Very strange and means I have to review each separately on completion. Anyway, this is a very convoluted novel with Hutton up to his usual behaviour. Just got to love the guy. And even he did not see who the murderer was going to be along with everyone else. A brilliantly thought out story from the Master.
Once again the author delivers. DS Hutton is the modern day copper we all need in our lives bringing the kind of satire and dysfunction to his profession we can only admire
