Daphne Rhodes would tell anyone: being ‘the one’ sucks.
At least, she would if there was anyone left to tell. She’s the one who’d survived. The one with the magic immune system that saved her.
The only one left on this whole miserable planet.
Daphne spends her days alone and craving answers as to why it had to be her. Why did she have to watch everyone she’d ever known and loved die a horrific death?
On her mother’s deathbed, Daphne learns long-hidden family secrets that send her on a quest across Canada to not only discover where she came from, why she survived, and who she is…but what she is, as well.
Emily is an east-coast Canadian thirtysomething mom of two humans and a furbaby. Her lumbersexual husband doesn’t actually work in lumber anymore, but he still wears the plaid and the beard.
As well as authoring, she’s a freelance editor and ghostwriter. Her books range in genre from Romance and Erotica to Horror and Science Fiction, and everything in between. When she’s not writing and/or momming, she’s sipping espresso, crocheting, and listening to audiobooks.

How do you like your heroines? Badass but real? Using their head but also their heart? Brave to not cover when facing obstacles that life put in front of them? Then you are in the right place. Add amazing writing, smart plot and twist, lovable supporting characters, and voila; you have a masterpiece that you can’t help but binge read. At least I couldn’t!
We first meet Daphne when the epidemic starts, we hear about a horrible disease spreading all around the world but Daphne doesn't seem to be affected. Why? She doesn't know and she wants answers.
I loved following Daphne on her journey and couldn't wait to read more.
This was such a fun apocolyptic story. I really loved watching her navigate the decrepit world. The dirtbike and smashing into conveniance stores, it all felt very grounded and realistic. My favorite part of the book was the descriptions. The "white hot" pain she feels when she breaks her bones, the description of her slamming into the pine tree, the green hot dogs stagnating in a conveniance store display. The descriptions were so vivid and made the book incredibly atmospheric.
This is the first part of a novella series and I'll definitely be continuing on to read the remaining novellas in the series.
I love the way the author blended the paranormal and post-apocolyptic genres. I also loved the main character's crow friend and the running dialogue she keeps going with the crow throughout her adventuress. through it all, I felt like I was right there with her, in the library, traveling across the country, when she breaks her bones on the abandoned highway.
This was a book that kept my attention from start to finish. Such a fun and gripping read.

I really liked this book. It was a different spin on TEOTWAWKI. In most post-apoc books a portion of the population is spared for some reason and the books are about the survivors being mean to one another. But, in this story, Daphne is the only person left alive (as far as she knows). The book is her story as a sole survivor, which is interesting. I can tell from the way it ended (and from the cover art of the sequels) the story is going to take a turn towards wolf-human hybrids as it continues. As that is not really my "thing," I probably won't continue the series. Nevertheless, this is a good stand alone story about survival and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys post-apoc fiction.
This story had me hooked from the first sentence. The lead character Daphne is so vivid and jumps right off the page, and I felt like I was there with her during the entire book. The apocalypses hits her world in such an excoriating way, and the way the author wrote it had me holding my breath and pausing to collect myself. This story is all twists and turns and mysteries unfolding told in a stunning style of witty dialogue and exceptional descriptions. I am itching to get to the next book!
This book is incredible! Fast paced, well written, and with an exciting and original premise, this author will have you gagging for more! If you're thinking about picking up a copy, don't think anymore, just do it! I promise you won't regret it.
What do you do when everything you loved is gone and everything you knew is a lie? If you're Daphne Rhodes, you get roaring drunk and set the whole town on fire. If you're reading The Beginning of the End, you taste the booze on her breath and smell the ash on her hands as she does it. Emily S Hurricane doesn't paint a postapocalyptic picture, rather she exposes a hidden world of flesh and blood and bone with a minimalist style that gives you everything you need and not an ounce more.
I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

This was an interesting start to an apocalyptic story. But I'm just not a huge fan of serials. And, prior to reading it, I didn't realize that's what this is. Breaking a single story into several less-than-100-page stories makes little sense to me. But the writing is good, and the plot seems interesting.
It's the end of the world, and Daphne Rhodes is the only one who isn't sick and dying. As everyone she's ever known and loved dies, she rages at the world and wonders why she is immune. A secret from her mother's past drives Daphne to discover not only who she is what what she is. With her crow friend, she goes on a road trip to find her answers and to discover if there are others who survived.
This incredible post-apocalyptic paranormal story nabbed me from the very first line. I couldn't stop reading until it was all done, and the only reason I didn't immediately dive into the second book was because I was someplace I didn't have wi-fi! Daphne pulled me in right off with her closeness to her family and, oh, how heartbreaking losing them was. The sickness is very near to what we're experiencing in 2022, and all the elements of it had me sinking deeper into the tale. At first we had the background mystery of Daphne's immunity, but as the plot pushed forward, it began to unravel and grow, and I love how she went on a trip to find out what she wanted to know. I won't give any spoilers. This book is just the beginning of the series, and I'm so excited to get the next one and continue this fun and crazy journey with Daphne. Excellent writing, especially with the little details.
From page one this author sucks you into an intriguing adventure of non stop surprises and discoveries that'll have you chomping at the bit for the next book! Definitely grabbing that now and probably will be up half the night on a reading binge! Well done!
No questions answered. We still don’t know. Loved the adventure this book takes us on but disappointed that we still don’t know what she is. Feels like I read for no reason.
