The Unearthly #4

The Forsaken

Rate this book
Since her Awakening, seventeen-year-old Gabrielle Fiori has known the devil wants her as his own, and that when she dies, he’ll finally lay his claim. Evading death should be easy. But when a prophecy linking her to the lord of the underworld is leaked, supernaturals—both good and bad—come together for one purpose: to kill her, the girl they believe is the anti-Christ.

Andre de Leon, Gabrielle’s soulmate and the king of vampires, will do anything to save her from a fate that’s been predestined for thousands of years. Even if that means killing. Even if that means dying.

But Gabrielle harbors a secret: death is only a matter of time. The magic that flows through her veins, changing her from human to vampire, is killing her. Her heart is slowing, her lungs strain for breath, her body sickens. The world has forsaken her, and unless fate can save her, she’ll be damned to hell and the devil that waits for her.

Found in the forest when she was young, Laura Thalassa was raised by fairies, kidnapped by werewolves, and given over to vampires as repayment for a hundred year debt. She’s been brought back to life twice, and, with a single kiss, she woke her true love from eternal sleep. She now lives happily ever after with her undead prince in a castle in the woods.

… or something like that anyway.

When not writing, Laura can be found scarfing down guacamole, hoarding chocolate for the apocalypse, or curled up on the couch with a good book.

This book picks right up where the last one left off. Literally. Andre and Gabrielle are jumping from the plane. They are on a race to attempt to change Gabrielle's fate on becoming Pluto's consort. There isn't anyone to trust because almost every paranormal group wants Gabrielle dead. They'll get their wish granted soon- if they don't kill her themselves- because her heart is slowing and Gabrielle knows she's dying.

The Devil wants his precious siren/vampire mix more than ever. He knows she's dying and will be in his arms before another lunar cycle.
"Come, consort," said Pluto. "I've laid you in my bed, touched your bare skin with my fingers and spoke of eternity with you."

Is it bad I'm torn? I hate the man in the suit-but he's showing another side of himself to his consort. I'm finding myself more and more excited for Gabrielle's moments with the Devil.
But don't worry- I still love Andre, our beloved vampire king. In this book, Andre and Gabrielle get closer than ever.

Oh and we can't forget Leanne and Oliver. Where Gabrielle goes they go. They're just as determined to stop fate from claiming Sabertooth as well. I need Oliver to be my best friend. Every scene he is in I laugh out loud. The T-shirt he gave Gabrielle- I kissed Satan and All I Got Was This Shitty Shirt . Seriously Oliver.. You're my favorite pixie stick with attitude.

The ending left me with wide eyes. After I type this review I'm diving straight into the next book. No shame I've read the first 4 books of this series in a week... don't judge.

What did I think? I think that Laura Thalassa needs to write faster. Like, way faster, because I need book #5 yesterday.

I'm going to assume that if you've read book #4, you've probably read the first three as well. Wow. This story, this story! You never know where it's going to go, and even better, how it's going to end. At this end of The Forsaken, I have no clue how Gabrielle is going to get out of this mess. It seems impossible. I also have no idea how Andre is going to keep it together. Book #5 is the last one of the series, I think, and I seriously hope Ms. Thalassa has something up her sleeve to rescue these poor, doomed souls. Because I'm at a complete loss here.

This series has grown on me so much, that I find myself theorizing possible outcomes! And none are as likely as the next. Yeah, so I just need the last book now, thank you!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
OK I think it's my favorite book ><
From the first pages, we feel that the tension is at its height and we know that something HUGE will happen before the end of the book!
And there's a lot of huge stuff going on : FINALLY , Gabrielle's long agony, death, the mysterious Jericho (who for me is obviously a nice guy since he quotes Tolkien xD) and THIS END !! ! (I admit that I SO didn't expect it, I never imagined that could have done that, NEVER !! And my heart broke for Andre >< (Well, I loved the spider dress xD))
I'm SO going to read the next book !!
Initial Reaction:
The Forsaken by Laura Thalassa picks up right where The Cursed left off (SPOILER NOTE: If you haven't read the previous books in this series, there are minor unavoidable spoilers in this review). Andre and Gabrielle are on the run as the clock on Gabrielle's life begins to wind down. She is more vampire than human now and if she's going to escape the Devil, she needs to find a way to NOT die. Easier said than done for this heroine ;)
Laura Thalassa has done it again! Not only has she left me with a massive book hangover but also a cliffhanger I can't handle!!!!! My favorite characters are back and of course I love them. The world-building and prophecy surrounding Gabrielle are delved into a bit more and overall this is just a fantastic bridge to the end of the series :D
Gabrielle and Andre are two of my all-time favorite characters. Gabrielle is independent, a bit naive, and willing to do whatever it takes to save those she loves including giving herself for them. Andre will do ANYTHING to save his soulmate, and I do mean ANYTHING! He's handsome, a bit rough around the edges and for a man/vampire who hasn't had human emotions in hundreds of years does a pretty good job of having emotions where Gabrielle is related.
This book, more than the others, focuses solely on Andre and Gabrielle, their relationship, and their ultimate separation. It's darker than the other volumes as Gabrielle faces her death, but also more romantic as Andre and Gabrielle come face to face with their feelings for each other. They've already admitted they love each other, but it goes much deeper than that in this installment to the series. I can honestly say it tugged on my heartstrings more than once!
Overall this book, while short, is perhaps my favorite of the series so far. As I already said you get a more indepth look into Andre and Gabrielle which I loved, but there's also this time element that Gabrielle is fighting. As the clock winds down, the author conveys (very well) this sense of dread and foreboding that has followed Gabrielle though the whole series. Is this book a bridge to the end? Yes, there's not a lot of character growth/development and it doesn't really deviate from the series main plot as we get closer to the end. Is it still enjoyable? ABSOLUTELY!!! If you're already a fan of the series, don't put off reading it!! If you're not, I suggest starting with book one and working your way through especially if you like young adult, urban fantasy :D
Something about this story has always seemed a bit lacking to me, though well written (you notice I have read all 4 so far). I think the authors other works are better built. I still love the relationship between andre and gabrielle and of course, Oliver is amazing as always.
I love this series! I can't say it enough! Every book I've written by Laura has kept me roped in from beginning to end. And after I've finished it leaves me wanting more!
This series is a 5 book series. I feel like the plot has to be ridiculously thought out and well written to keep someone intrigued for five books. And boy is it definitely both!
From the beginning of book 1 to the end of book 4 I have not ever wanted to put the book down. There is always something happening to peak your interest. Whether it's the devil story line, the love relationship between Gabrielle and Andre, the non stop action, or my favorite gay fairy Oliver!
And let me tell you do I LOVEEE Oliver! Along with all the other wonderful reasons I love this book he is definitely among the top. His lines of dialogue constantly have me cracking up. He is definitely a highlight of this book! One of my most favorite characters of all time. :D
Laura is surely becoming one of my favorite authors. (:
Unfortunately I didn't enjoy this book nearly as much as I did the first three books in this series. I can't pinpoint any possible reasons why this is the case. I wonder if it is because it has been a long time since I have read a book in this series. I still enjoyed this book but it just wasn't amazing. I do plan on finishing this series sometime soon.
actually 3.5
won't lie, I fought back tears near the end for chapter about how Leanne, Andre, and Oliver where facing it. Anyway, I'll try to keep this review as spoiler free as possible, because a lot shit goes down.
Annoying as fuck as always Gabielle Soulmate and Andre are on the run. Soulmate questions EVERY SINGLE EFFING THING they do and also COMPLAINS ABOUT EVERYTHING, even though she's on the run for her life.
"Like, omg, we have to camp on the ground? In a tent? NO."
"Like, omg, I have to walk through sewers though it might save my life? Ew. NO."
Andre steps it up in this book in spite of Gabrielle fighting it the entire way (there is literally no answer for why she does this.) Instead of trusting him, she just hides everything from him. Yea, remember how that's gone before? Ugh, this girl. Anyway, back to Andre. He is kicking as and taking names and doing everything in his 700 years of vampire power to protect her.
Oliver and Leanne step it up too being as loyal as ever. EVEN THE DEVIL STEPS IT UP. Hinting that he may not be as cruel as he seems...maybe?
THE ONLY ONE WHO DOESN'T STEP IT UP IS GABRIELLE. ARGH!! I'm sorry I'm so bitter.
After "The Coveted", "The Forsaken" is definitely my most liked out of the series so far. There is death, anguish, it's uh..generally not a happy book, but it's written well. You can feel Andre's desperation, Leanne's place as a seer where she's stuck between a rock and a hard place, and we even get to see a more serious side of Oliver.
The book doesn't leave us on a rip your heart out cliffhanger since Laura Thalassa pretty much spells out to you what's gonna happen, but it was raw, and I almost cried.
This paragraph contains spoilers- but not a big one. Anywho, skip it if you don't want to know:
Overall a good read with a really good ending. Cannot wait to read the finale to this series. I'm interested to know what role Divine Power will play and how Gabrielle once again outsmarts the devil. I sincerely hope Leanne plays a greater and more powerful role as well. Till then!
Fated to two men. Two prophecies that are involve her. She has had escape from the Devil again in Romania and brought back to life by her soulmate the King of the Vampires Andre de Leon. Now, seventeen-year-old Gabrielle Fiotri the last siren and first-born vampire is being hunted by the people that she used to work for and other creatures who want her dead thanks to the Devil revealing her secrets to the supernatural community. Andre uses his power and his position as the vampire king to protect Gabrielle but time is running out for her. Gabrielle knows that she’s dying and the Devil is waiting for her arrival in Hell. With her friends and Andre on her side, Gabrielle must find the third undecided fate and convince her to help Gabrielle to not having her fate come true.
This book was action-paced and entertaining but I have notice some grammar errors in the author’s writing. As for the romance between Gabrielle and Andre, I felt this relationship has changed, what happened to the fire? The passion? Plus aren’t soulmates supposed to be equals? I understand that Andre wants to protect Gabrielle, but wow ! possessive and controlling much?
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Whenever I find a series that I enjoy, so much so that I go & check out what other books they've written, & then I find that they've released a bunch of other highly rated series... I feel like I've hit the jackpot. So lucky that I've found a new, potentially favourite author & I just can't wait to read more of their books & start this new epic author love. Laura Thalassa & this series she has written is this. This book is as amazing. SO GOOD. So Gabrielle was a little stupid in making deals with the devil, I don't even care because it's SO GOOD, & that ending!
Good series, bad editing
I've been enjoying this series a lot. It's a captivating escape, but this book was annoying in that there were tons of obvious typos and other editing issues that made it feel unprofessional.
This book feel really flat for me. Extremely flat. I practically despised the main character - Gabrielle. I understand wanting to be independant and self reliant, but she was so unnecessarily stubborn and stupid - questioning everything. EVERYTHING. As well as keeping life threatening secrets to herself . . . and then when all is said and done, she finally admits to herself that MAYBE, just maybe, she shouldn't have been so stubborn or she should have listened or that she should have actually made decent, logical, and reasonable choices.
One more thing. Oliver. Was I the only one who could not stand this character? I understand this is fantasy and fiction, but I could not relate to this character nor did I find him relevant at all, other than popping in and put of existence in the book as well as making unnecessary lewd comments ALL THE DAMN TIME. No. No, thank you.
Unfortunately, even the one decent character in this book, who actually convinced me to continue reading the books in this series was Andre, became annoying sometimes, with his "soulmate" this, and "soulmate" that. However, he was the only one, it seemed, who had common sense throughout the series.
I just can't believe I got this far into the series without slamming my head into - and thru - a wall.
Don't even get me started on the mix of mythology and belief systems going on in this series. It was like Thalassa decided to condense all the possibilities of religious beliefs in the world and smack it onto the pages of the books. My head was spinning from all the back and forth, and the REPETITION (which had been ongoing from the 1st book).
Ugh. I'm done with this series. Now I have to go cleanse my soul.
It's too bad, though, because other than the flop that were the characters and the mythological aspects, Thalassa truly does have a great way of storytelling and writing, just not with this series.
In this book, Andre and Gabrielle jump out of his private airplane, land in a a forest, and from there it is staying one step ahead of not only the Politia, but all the other factions as well. The Devil/Pluto put Gabrielle on blast, letting all her secrets be known, so now the whole world believes her to be the anti-Christ.
If she didn't have Andre, she wouldn't have made it as far as she did. Still, The Devil can stalk her anywhere, which in itself is eerie. Yes, the 700 year old vampire, and a 17 year old got it on. Yes, that bothers me. But, what bothers me more is all this weight everyone puts on this young girl's shoulders. She has no choice in anything, and her choice to be with Andre was one she made. Whether young and dumb or whatever, it was her choice. I do believe Andre loves her, and he stops at nothing to get her away from The Devil. But ultimately... Gabrielle has to make hard decisions when the Devil threatens the death of the handful of people who care about her.
I can't wait to see how this concludes. The adults in this world leave everything to the kids. How is that fair?
This series has been getting better and better as I continue to finish each book. I started reading Laura Thalassa about 6 months ago when I read the 2 Bargainer books that were already out and I loved them! I read the 3rd the day it was released, and decided to check out more of her writings, which I'm loving! I enjoy her writing style and find her work to be captivating and hard to put down. This book was the saddest of them all, but I've got to believe that the 5th book will make it right and turn things around. I had a thought...is it weird that I feel more sadness for Andre than I do Gabrielle?! He has been so much better to her than she ever was to him, and it's heartbreaking to see him so broken😢
I am loving this series.
So interesting and touching. Also funny.
Can’t stop thinking bout it even when I have to put the books down.
Clean and yet still fascinating to me. It’s a five book trilogy and absolutely worth it. All the books are out. No waiting. If you have kindle Unlimited, then you will enjoy them even more.
The characters are very well developed. The plot is intricate and complicated. Each book contains an equal part of the plot line and is well paced.
There are a few typos. Not many. “Scones instead of sconces” it was kind of funny after awhile. Luckily the story carries you through these little interruptions. If typos bother you, I wouldn’t let it stop you from reading it anyway.
Highly recommended
3 stars - Upper YA fantasy romance.
Until the last 15-20% I was bored with the story in this one, I think the story would have better as a trilogy and not 5 books as I feel like we are just repeating similar events that is mainly Gabrielle running from whoever is trying to kill her this time.
The ending was good and I am looking forward to the last book to see how it all ends but ill be glad when it does. I stand by thinking if the author made the devil a genuine love interest the story would have been a lot better in my opinion, I think its obvious Gabrielle will somehow reunite with Andre and this causes me to feel no tension or angst within the story.
And please Andre stop calling Gabrielle soul mate her name is Gabrielle!
Character change
Is book is my least favorite so far because the characters seem to change. It seemed they made choices that they normally wouldn't make and not because of love or circumstances, it just seemed the character suddenly took on new personalities. Also, I'm quite shocked at the lack of Leanne. Clearly this isn't her story, but as much as we saw Oliver I thought we'd see a little more of her too.
