The pet animals are hungry! Choose what to feed each pop-up animal in this fun and innovative interactive board book for kids.
In Hungry Pets , children are presented with a series of bright and funny pet characters, each with their mouth wide open (a v-fold pop-up), eagerly awaiting a tasty treat.
The reader can choose a 'dangly' snack (hanging from the spine of the book) to feed to each animal. Hungry dog might want to chomp on a bone but wouldn’t it be funny to give her cat’s tasty fish treat instead? What would dog say about that?
This delightful series of pre-school books encourages young children to engage with the book and converse with the parent or carer, form connections between the animal characters and what they like to eat, and to practice hand-eye coordination through play.
They can choose to either pick the correct food to give each animal or can engage in ‘silly play’ by offering knowingly inappropriate foods to each character.
For more fun with feeding more animals, you may be interested in Hungry Animals, another title from the Feeding Time series, this time with creatures of the wild!
OK, so this wasn't a book that was ideal to review digitally, but what I saw was fine – to a point. We get four household creatures that are hungry – a parrot, a bunny, a cat and a dog, and the flaps that open up show them mouths agape and starving. So you have to choose one of four food ribbons dangling from the structure of the book to 'feed' to each animal. In other words, no you cannot feed the cat with the parrot, however much that would be a realistic option. Instead, moggie gets a piddly little fish for his lunch – or would you rather switch and swap, and give the animals nonsense foodstuffs? The dog must have tried watermelon some time in her life, surely?! Let's face it, this isn't a book, but it's a tool for getting the very young hand used to handling and interacting with a book, and that is a vital part of anyone's household set-up.
This is a really cute board book with an engaging interactive element. Children can pretend to feed the four different animals with the attached cutout shapes of corresponding pet treats -- as you open each page there is a pop-up animal mouth children can place the cutout food item in. It provides an opportunity for problem solving or lots of silly play! I think the idea of this book is so fun and great, though I do wonder at the functionality or really longevity of the string-attached cardboard cutouts given that this is a board book. For toddlers and preschoolers this could be a pretty fun book to perhaps tear up. That isn't a major ding against the book, just something caregivers should be aware of.
***Note: I was given a review copy of this book by Quarto Kids. Opinions are my own.
Both my 1 and 3 year-olds adored this book. We had the digital copy only but my older kiddo still had fun pretending to feed each of the pets, and as soon as we finished she wanted to start over and "feed them each something different". In my experience, kids love board books where they can interact instead of just look and listen. And all the parents out there know: kids don't fake it, whether they like or dislike a book, they let you know! The physical copy of this book is going on her birthday list.
Thank you to Carly Madden, Natalie Marshall, Happy Yak, and Edelweiss for the opportunity to review this free e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
This is sure to be an oft-repeated favorite! This vivid, adorable board book offers both pop-ups and interactive pieces for young readers to "feed" various pets. The text is short and simple, but contains expressive words that little ones will love to hear and imitate.
This is definitely a read-with-me book due to delicate pieces and parts, but what toddler won't love looking at pets and playing pretend? This is as close to a guaranteed hit as I can imagine!
Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!
This brightly illustrated book is for the youngest children. They will get to feed the pets from the choices that are attached to the book. Faces also pop up which the children may enjoy. Of course, I could not get the full benefit of all of this with my ARC but it seems appealing.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions are my own.
Thanks to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books, Happy Yak for a free digital copy.
A simple and fun board book about feeding pets. A cat, a rabbit, a bird, and a dog. They are all hungry and you need to identify what they need to eat. Colorful and appropriate for toddlers.
It must be a lot of fun for children but it must be in paper. I like the illustrations Many thanks to the publisher and Edelweiss for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Interesting book for kids to start understanding feeding the animals, pets they might have at home. While cat doesn't share the same meal as dog, this book might help young children understand that.
