On a cold blustery November night, Detective Sergeant Mike Brugge and his partner Detective Constable Mel Bailey come across a girl, age unknown, in the parkland in Gordon Square. She was frail, malnourished, dirty and was covered in excrement.
What had happened to this girl? Why was she cowering down, shielding her eyes from the light, with a look of horror on her face? She appeared to be non-coherent, totally unengaged and would not speak to anyone. Nothing could penetrate the world where her soul had taken solace.
Mike and Mel set out to find out where she had come from and what had been her plight. Revealing hypnosis sessions allow them to glimpse some of her pain and suffering. Follow their story deep into the horrors that unfold, causing chaos and turmoil among their own lives.
The detectives are about to discover a horrific, gut-wrenching story, that spanned over four decades. But will it end?

I wasn't sure what to expect when starting this book and it certainly opened with a bang, when a young family are wiped out on a mountain road in a storm. All the lead up and all the details are relevant to the plot later as well.
Mike and Mel find a young woman wandering the streets, clearly malnourished and traumatised. She isn't speaking so the hospital team have to use different ways of getting through.
I really enjoyed this, it rattled along quickly, and the clues were uncovered at a reasonable pace, so as to not ruin it and keep you guessing to the very end. The relationship between Mike and Mel is lovely, but its the slightly less significant characters that also make this for me.
Lots of twists and turns as you'd expect from a crime novel. However I read plenty, and this will be unlike anything you normally read.

Gordon Square by Tracy Martin-Summers might just be one of my favorite books I’ve read this year. I didn’t know what I was walking into when I set out reading this book, but, wow! Fair warning, once you start reading, you won’t stop.

Mike and Mel are really likeable characters. I felt connected to them from the beginning and watching them try to solve what happened was an emotional rollercoaster.

The plot is full of twists I didn’t expect. The writing is tight, and intriguing. This is fast paced and as I said before, darn near impossible to set down.

If you hadn’t guessed, it’s 5 stars from me. Don’t miss this one.

The trilogy Gordon Square, Arlington Terrace, Keepers Lodge by Tracy Martin-Summers
Gordon Square
On a cold, windy November night, Detective Sergeant Mike Brugge and his partner Detective Constable Mel Bailey come across a girl, age unknown, in the parkland in Gordon Square. She was frail, malnourished, dirty and was covered in excrement.
What had happened to this girl?
Revealing hypnosis sessions allow them to glimpse some of her pain and suffering. Then, follow their story deep into the horrors that unfold, causing chaos and disruption in their own lives.
The detectives are about to discover a horrific, gut-wrenching story that spanned over four decades. But will it end?
Arlington Terrace is the sequel to Gordon Square:
It was probably not the most obvious choice for a three-month sabbatical. Still, Emma coming to Holden seemed totally idyllic. She had heard so much about it and could picture every segment etched like braille in her mind. Now she wanted to fill in the dots and bring it to life to see it for herself first-hand.
It was April 2026, and she had secured a three month, off the record sublet in a beautiful apartment called Arlington Terrace. The apartment with a black front door. It was perfect for her, required no references, and no questions were being asked as to why she was there. No one even knew she was heading that way, so she could slip in unnoticed and live incognito amongst the locals.
So how was it that Julie found her again when she was so careful not to leave a trail and why she didn't feel alone, ever? Was she going mad, or was she simply being paranoid. What could she do to stop these tormenting acts from happening and make people believe that she was the one being persecuted?
Detective Sergeant Mike Brugge, Detective Constable Mel Brugge and Detective Sergeant Paul Osman are back at the heart of yet another investigation deep in the heart of Holden City Central. Follow them as they try to unravel a crime that takes them back to a gut-wrenching case that has infected yet another generation.
Keeper's Lodge is the concluding story in the Gordon Square, Arlington Terrace trilogy.
Picture postcard' were the words Detective Sergeant Mike Brugge chose to describe Keeper's Lodge when they first saw the stunning Scandinavian-style retreat nestling proudly in the mountains.
They were investigating the disappearance of Rachel Blossom, a psychiatric patient with severe mental health issues. Rachel had vanished and was now classed as a missing person.
How was it that she had slipped entirely off the grid without a trace? Had her multiple personality disorder outwitted the medical profession into thinking she was of sound mind, was it just a series of blunders by the nursing team, or was there something more sinister going on?
I thoroughly enjoyed all three of these novels; they are well written and have great twists and turns in each plot. In addition, I enjoyed getting to know the characters and how they developed as the books progressed. I was gripped from the first page of book one to the last of book three.
I am happy to recommend them.

This is an excellent debut novel. The paperback copy I read had some editing and spelling errors, hence the loss of half a star, but that is really the only criticism I can make of this chilling police procedural!
DS Mike Brugge and DC Mel Bailey are stationed at Holden CID together with some other loyal and talented officers working under DCI Lawrence Dhillon. They are investigating the case of a girl found starving and dirty, identity unknown, and are referring to her as Jane Gordon, after the parkland Square in which she was found. After three weeks in hospital care the poor thing is still completely uncommunicative, as if her mind has blocked her out from all the awful things that must have happened. Even her age, maybe between 15 and 25 years, is a guess due to her malnourished state. Doctor Gyllensvan is not making any headway at all. With no idea where the girl even came from, the detectives really are stumped and need a breakthrough. And one comes soon, in the form of another girl in an identical state and looking like she is Jane's twin. Tests show the girls are sisters but neither is talking. Mel is horrifically attacked and put out of action, and with two girls starved, neglected and subjected to god knows what sort of treatment and Mel in hospital, Mike and the other detectives are now on the trail of two evil people, and they won’t rest until they catch them. When the doctors finally make a breakthrough via hypnosis into the girls’ history, some very disturbing lines of investigation open up as Mike and the doctors watch Jane relive some of the worst scenes they couldn’t even have imagined. Little do they know what horrors await as they race towards the truth.
I loved the obvious and very caring friendship between the two lead detective characters. Mike and Mel have been working partners for ten years so they have a very close working relationship and really are best friends to each other. This came across very well, as did the great descriptions of the other characters in the story which was well written and had an engrossing storyline. There are some dark and harrowing, almost savage, parts in this story which really did have me hooked in from the start. I hope there will be more stories featuring this team. 4.5*

What a brilliant opening to a book. We are introduced to what I can only describe as the perfect family on a family outing that ends in tragedy. Fast forward to present day DS Mike Brugge and his partner DS Mel Bailey are investigating the discovery of a young girl who appears in Gordon Square. She is neglected, starved, potentially tortured and abused. Three weeks later another girl is found in exactly the same circumstance and she bears a striking resemblance to first. Having no idea of their origin the girls are named Jane and Sally Gordon. The girls don’t talk and just appear to be empty shells not interacting with anyone. The detectives now have two cases to solve. Can hypnotism help draw out what happened to the girls?

Not only do the detectives have the Gordon case to investigate but then another event hits more closer to home impacting their personal lives. But are the two cases intertwined?

This was definitely a book that kept me on the edge of my seat and a book I couldn’t put down. Initially I wasn’t sure what genre this would fall in but it’s definitely a psychological thriller. One of the main aspects of the storyline that attracted me to the book was the idea of hypnosis. It was interesting to see how the hypnosis sessions with the Gordon girls gave an insight into what they had been through and who they interacted with. The use of hypnosis did make the story unique amplifying that a person’s natural response is to forget/block out memories of trauma and lock them away as in the case of the Gordon girls. I liked how the relationship between Mike and Mel was portrayed as not only are they working partners but they treat each other more like family.

The storyline was well written and although some events were shocking to read the author wrote them in a very sensitive and careful way which made you sympathise with the characters even more.

A book I’d definitely recommend.

I received a gifted copy for an honest review.

What an excellent debut novel. The first in the Brugge and Bailey detective series and a really good crime/police procedural book with two main threads running through the book, both quite compelling. I loved the caring relationship between the two detectives and it was clear there was something more than ‘just good friends’ simmering under the surface.

Briefly, the prologue is quite gentle introducing a genteel family who suffer a horrendous accident. We are then introduced to our detective duo and their current case investigating the mystery of a young girl found wandering in a comatose and filthy state. When another girls is found in a similar state it is obvious they are related. But neither will talk or connect; apart from to each other. Then Mel is brutally raped and left for dead leaving her in hospital and Mike and the rest of the team hunting her attacker, as well as trying to find out what happened to the two girls.

There are some very dark and disturbing revelations, mainly in the latter half of the book that some may find upsetting but they are not gratuitous. I raced through this book wanting to know exactly what the background was to these poor girls and when I did it was shocking. There were a few, for me, irritants in the dialogue but aside from this I though it was a very enjoyable read and I’m definitely going to read the next in the series ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This books opens up by introducing us to the characters Mary and her husband Joe and their two daughters Roberta and Anika. Anika loves her dancing and Roberta her art work. But tragedy strikes…. What happens?

There are two cases that run alongside each other one DS Mike Brugge and his partner Detective Constable Mel Bailey are investigating a girl that has been found in Gordon Square. The girl is saying nothing but clearly disturbed and in a malnourished state. What has happened to her? Who is she? Why is she not talking about what’s happened?

The second plot is about Niko but who is he? Where does he fit into the story? What’s his backstory and what is his shocking connection to Mel? Why does Mike want to kill him?

This book is absolutely brilliantly written and the first instalment in the Gordon Square trilogy. The book focuses on two hard subject matters which are rape and abuse.
The book also covers topics of revenge, psychiatry and hypnosis, friendship and determination.

I love the descriptive writing skills of the author and she certainly takes your imagination on a journey. The characters Mike and Mel are fantastic and I really enjoyed the way their friendship builds up. There are some great twists in the story which leads to an ending left on a cliffhanger. I cannot wait to read the next in the series.

I really liked the opening to this book. It caught my attention immediately and kept me reading for a while. It was a fairly quick read, and it was difficult to put down. If you're in a reading slump, this would be a good book to read to get you out of it, especially if you love crime fiction.

I really liked the characters, especially Mel. The author did a great job at writing the characters; there was a lot of detail put into them that made it easy to picture them as you read. I loved reading about Mel's friendship with Mike; they are definitely one of my favorite detective duos that I've read about.

My only criticism is that the ending felt a bit rushed. Otherwise, it was a gripping novel with a lot of depth to it. It does have some touchy subjects, including abuse and rape, so keep that in mind if you're thinking about reading it.

Disclaimer: I received a gifted copy of this book via the author and Rachel's Random Resources. This did not influence my opinion in any way.

A Debut novel with a fantastic opening! I was frantic, heartbroken and eager to keep reading.

This crime fiction/ police procedural book had very likable main characters: Mike and Mel, police partners who are also friends. I was drawn to both of them immediately.

As the main story begins with Mike and Mel, I was drawn into their investigation, completely haunted by what happens next and felt a bit shell-shocked, along with one of the characters. What to focus on, which crime to solve, how to help. The frustration the character feels was also felt by me. (keeping in spoiler free)

The middle of the story was a bit mushy for me. As police work goes, being usually more methodical, this felt a bit all over the place. But the ending quickly redeemed itself….the last 1/3 of the book I was gutted! Oof!

If you like crime fiction or mystery/thrillers, I would recommend picking up this debut. I’m starting book 2 – Arlington Square, today!

This is book one in the Gordon Square Trilogy & I was lucky enough to win a signed copy. A great debut novel & what it lacks in page numbers, it certainly makes up in punch & plot.

We are introduced to our two detectives, Brugge & Bailey, when they are investigating the mysterious appearance of a young girl. She is filthy & almost comatose. Another girl is found in a similar state & they will only communicate with each other.

The latter half of the book contains some upsetting revelations &, whilst not gratuitous, they are disturbing. I’ve dropped a star as the writing of dialogue exchanges really started to grate but that won’t put me off reading the remainder of the series.

It's always good to read a book by an author you've not come across before, and this was a great debut novel. It was right up my alley and it didn't disappoint, I literally couldn't put this book down.

The characters of Mike and Mel were great and I loved the obvious closeness of their relationship and how it developed though the story.

The plot is full of twists and it is dark, gripping and harrowing at times too. I couldn't work out how the plot would unfold and connect. It kept me hooked until the very end.
Definitely would love to see a sequel.....

Wow what a twisty read. It kept me gripped from the very beginning- wondering how things were linked - if they were linked - and what would happen next.
Tracy Martin-Summers writes in such a way to draw you into the characters lives. I really liked getting to know Mike and Mel, and how they interacted with eachother and the other characters.
The medical details are fascinating- the idea of using hypnosis sounds an interesting way to understand the trauma impacted on victims found.
I’m really looking forward to getting stuck into the sequel.

TW: rape, child abduction/abuse

A good twist (albeit predictable), but fell a bit flat for me (although I do read a lot of crime fiction).

Basically 80% conversation, and although it made it speedy, I was *craving* more. Ending rushed, and I just needed more exploring - another thread of the story seemed to overpower the whole plot, and also seemed too convenient for my liking!

A low 3-stars.

Gifted in exchange for an honest review.

Wow what a debut. I was instantly hooked right from the start.

I really loved the relationship between Mike and Mel and how it developed throughout the story.

The author’s writing style is so tense and keeps you hooked and turning the pages to see what will happen next.

I definitely recommend reading this series.

Good but became irritating towards he end

This was a good story and I really enjoyed the first half, then it began to get tedious when Mel and Mike had a conversation. It wasn't needed to always use their names when speaking with each other, it spoilt the flow and became really irritating, also wasn't keen on the cliche romance between them.

Not a bad storyline

The storyline had a lot of.primose, and kept you on your toes with fairly far-fetched twists, but I don't mind those.
The writing jarred me, with a lot of grammatical errors (they're/there etc) and when Mel and Mike are talking to eachother, they use each other's names in every sentence, which no-one does in real life.

Okay I was completely hooked by the very first page. Firstly everyone knows I love a good police detective book and Gordon Square didn’t disappoint. The storyline was perfectly paced and for 248 pages a lot of things happened in such a short span of time. I really hope this book turns into a series as I really didn’t want it to end. Please note this book does contain a violent rape scene.

Thank you RachelRandomResources for sending me a copy of this book for a blog tour.

Firstly I need to point out the triggers of rape which occurs early on into the book.

This book is brilliantly written. It took me a little while to get into but I was soon hooked and kept wanting to know what happened.

When two investigations cross paths a dark underworld is discovered and takes you on a harrowing journey.

I loved the relationship between Mike and Mel, it was really well developed. I'm really looking forward to reading more of Tracy's work.
