Ben will do anything to keep his family together, even marry his next-door neighbor, but what happens when love enters the picture? After the death of his wife, all Ben cares about is his two wonderful stepdaughters. But when his wife's parents sue for full custody, Ben panics. What to do? His next-door neighbor has a solution. Jamie agrees to marry him so he can keep his family together. They come up with a brilliant plan but what happens next surprises both Jamie and Ben. They fall in love. Everything is going well until Jamie does the unthinkable and Ben is left feeling betrayed. Will Ben see the truth in Jamie's eyes and realize unexpected love is the best thing for himself and his girls?

Unexpected is a single dad romance I couldn't stop reading. Love sprouting from a marriage of convenience is one of my favorite tropes and Jana Richards has written a beautiful romance. Unexpected is filled with tender moments, emotional tension, characters you'll want to hug the stuffing out of, and a romance to melt your heart. The plot moves at a great pace. There are some very tense scenes with had me reading late into the night. Fans of heartfelt romance will simply adore Unexpected. Keep tissues handy. I can't recommend this book enough. Highly recommend!

Blurb: Single dad Ben Greyson wants only one thing – to retain custody of his two stepdaughters. A dysfunctional childhood has made family the most important thing in his life. When his late wife’s parents sue for custody, a desperate Ben is left with two choices – run away with his girls or marry his next-door neighbor. Jamie Garven wants only one thing – to be a mother. She’s intrigued by her handsome new neighbor and falls in love with his little girls. Then disaster strikes and Ben is faced with losing his children. Their marriage of convenience turns into unexpected love. But when Ben interprets Jamie’s efforts to save their family as a betrayal, they could lose everything, including each other.

Thoughts: My feelings about this book were… “unexpected”. I enjoyed it, and yet, at times, it was disturbing. There is a lot of distrust going on in this story – almost too much sometimes. Ben is completely clueless when it comes to trusting people. I could understand his not wanting to give up his girls. That’s a given, but his constant harping on not letting the grandparents have anything to do with the girls was obsessive—and not in a good way. He forbids Jamie from letting the grands see or speak to the girls—which she does anyway. And that causes even more problems when he finds out. Yes, she was dishonest, but… it was on the internet, not in person. And Ben blew it completely out of proportion. Trust was definitely an issue. Along with past history on all counts, bad parents, PTSD, Lupus, alcoholism, and more. It was almost as if the author threw everything she could think of into a hat and pulled them out at random to throw into the story.

That being said, it is a decent story with a satisfying ending that will leave you smiling. Recommended with the caveat that there are a lot of issues in this story that may bother some readers.

I received a complimentary copy of this book and I am voluntarily reviewing it.

While this is a part of a series, you can read it as a stand-alone. I have not read any of the prior Masonville stories.

I adored this story. Two people are affected by their childhood. One more than the other. Ben Greyson grew up in a dysfunctional family whose parents (basically his mother) drove him to drink. He eventually became an alcoholic. He has been sober for over 5 years. Pressure from different fronts are closing in on him. His mother is demanding what she feels is her rightful inheritance instead of it going to Ben and his two siblings. He is raising his deceased wife's two young daughters. The maternal grandparents want to visit and see their two granddaughters but Ben feels they just want to take them away from him. He marries his new neighbor (Jamie Garven) hoping the custody suit that they brought forth will go away.

Jamie is a local veterinarian. She is unable to have children but desperately wants to be a mother. She is divorced as her ex-husband was unable to handle her infertility. When Ben suggest they marry, Jame is hesitate to go through with it based on her prior experience. When they do marry these two have several hurdles to go through to see their HEA.

The author really put some thought provoking comments in here that really made me the reader really understand what these two were going through. They become more than characters more humanize. The author also wrote the story in a dual POV format. I LOVE it. Getting that glimpse into those thoughts really show that struggle.

This is a slightly sexy story. There is some very minor details but not much. That being said, I would recommend a parent to give their consent to their child if under 18.

What a great book. Most of the time I wanted to smack Ben up along side the head and knock some sense into him. I just wanted to hug Jamie and tell her everything would be OK no matter what happened. He has been through a lot and is trying to raise his stepkids by himself. Because of his parents and the distrust they have caused in him, he feels the kids' grandparents are trying to take the kids away from him but they only want to have contact with them. Jamie has been through a lot in her life but she grew up in a loving home but her sister was sick all the time and she felt second rate. Then she gets married to a control freak and also finds out she can't have kids so her husband divorces her. Ben and Jamie get married only a few weeks after they meet thinking it will be the only way the kids grandparents will drop the custody suit. After their visit, Ben forbids Jamie to have contact with them, but she disagrees and lets the girls secretly video chat with them sometimes. After Ben finds out he says some really horrible things to Jamie and leaves with the kids. Will they be able to work things and be able to forgive? What other secret is Jamie keeping and is it a good one for Ben? Will she move back to Masonville to be with Ben and the girls or stay in Lewiston and become partners with her dad and brother-in-law?

At their lowest point, with no relief in sight, two desperate people find the solution to their problems in a most unexpected way.

Hard working, devoted parent, Ben Grayson sees the only solution to protecting his children is to go on the run. Until he meets next door neighbor Jamie Garven who might be the answer to his prayers in a most unexpected manner.

Almost from the start, Jamie’s calm demeanor settles Ben, giving him a sense of comfort and safety. His two little girls mend the ache in Jamie’s heart, showing her a new opportunity to fulfill her greatest wish. Together they might be able to solve the other’s dilemmas—if only . . .

Our Review: Unexpected, Book 3 in the Masonville Series is the kind of novel every fan of the romance genre hopes to find: relatable, multi-layered characters with strong goals, motivation and conflict and antagonists worth their weight in page-turning gold for creating tension and erecting roadblocks to our two deserving leads. As the saying goes, ‘just when things look good, throw a monkey wrench in the works’. Author Jana Richards has followed that advice to the max. Rarely have we found such an excellent example of good writing, great characters and a longed-for HEA. Well done!

On a scale of 1-5, Unexpected deserves an 8.

Holding on to Family . . .

Single dad Ben Greyson is concerned about keeping custody of his two stepdaughters, Bella and Sophia. Their grandparents were threatening to take them away from him, so he was more hyper than usual. His own dysfunctional childhood let him know that family was the most important thing to him. So to keep the kids in a custody battle with his deceased wife’s parents, he decided to ask the next-door neighbor to marry him.

Jamie Garven, Ben’s neighbor, would love to be a mother. Unable to have children, she enjoys the children next door. So when Ben explains the issue and asks her to marry him, she accepts for this chance to be a real mom.

There are many obstacles that will be thrown into the story line. Ben is adamant about keeping the grandparents away from the girls. Jamie tried a compromise approach of letting them see the girls over the internet. But Ben saw that as betrayal. Would this be enough to cause them to split up? They have already gone past the “marriage of convenience” stage and truly fallen in love. But emotions are still in a turmoil. There are many more issues to “rock the boat” as well. Grab your copy and see what the family has to face. Will this make their marriage stronger?

I enjoyed watching Jaime and Ben's friendship develop and seeing the affection among them and the girls. Serious issues are addressed in this story that are not commonly dealt with in romance novels. PCOS, alcoholism, Lupus, abuse, and neglect are among some of the problems that cause dysfunction in the families. The far reaching influences of these issues cause conflict throughout the story. Is a dysfunctional family better than no family at all? The characters struggle to deal with personal and family issues. These struggles cast a pall over most of the story making me wonder if Ben and Jaime will ever reconcile with their past or their present. I like how these real issues are addressed, but I want Ben to come to his senses sooner and for Jaime to take a stand. I do not like how long they both try to do things on their own. Editing errors, especially omitted words, are distracting. Though better editing is needed, I would read another story by this author. I received a complimentary advance review copy of this title through Book Sirens and submit this review voluntarily.

I love the cover and I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The characters are well-developed from the main characters to the secondary cast. I wanted to knock some sense into Ben - who has huge trust issues, but the author does a good job of making his character infuriating and likeable at the same time. Jamie is a wonderful leading lady. The cast is equally enjoyable from brothers and sisters to Ben’s girls – who are adorable, and Jamie’s scene-stealing pets. The family drama grabs the attention and keeps you turning the pages. The misunderstands within Jamie’s family is emotionally charged, and once you learn about Ben’s history, you’ll understand why he overacts the way he does. This book is an emotional ride from start to finish. I highly recommend this third book in the Masonville Series, which reads well on its own. I hope another book is in the works. This is full of emotion as Jamie who is a divorced vet in town when she meets her new next door single dad Ben. While he has lost her wife Olivia to a auto accident he has been left with her two little girls who belonged to Olivia's first husband who died of cancer. Jamie was married to Carson but he left her when she could not get pregnant because of a medical issue. Ben proposed to Jamie as a way to keep his daughters when Olivia's parent want custody so Jamie agrees to the marriage. As they both fall in love with each other they have not voiced their feelings and when he finds out that Jamie has allowed his girls to talk with the grandparents he moves out and tells Jamie their marriage if over just as she was going to tell him that she found out that she is pregnant. Great story and loved the characters especially Sophia and Bella.

Jamie desperately wants to be a mother. Ben needs a fake wife. After a rocky start, two neighbors become friends, then marry so he can retain custody of his young stepdaughters. Somewhere along the way, they unexpectedly fall in love. They have so many obstacles to overcome - secrets from their pasts, prior unhappy marriages, and grandparents to just want to have a relationship with their granddaughters. I love the small-town aspect of this story, and enjoyed seeing characters from the previous books. Ben was a bit hard-headed about letting his in-laws see his girls, and he was awfully hard on Jamie when she went behind his back. It was beautiful to see Jamie reconnect with her family, especially her sister. It was a beautiful story to read, even if the road was rocky. A great story of learning to trust and love again. Both Ben and Jamie had their issues, big ones. But they come together for the love of two beautiful little girls.

Jamie is a gentle soul, who was treated badly by her ex husband which left her self confidence at an all time low. But rising to the challenge of being the mum to these 2 girls is a dream come true for her.

Ben on the other hand was a man I wanted to throttle. Yes he was wonderful father but his care of other peoples feelings was sadly lacking.

But together they made a wonderful family, well worth the read. Have the tissues ready, there are some very heart warming and heart wrenching moments.

Ben and Jamie are influenced by their past, Ben more so than Jamie but it effects how they are now and see things so when they agree to marry to help ensure Ben doesn't lose his children it's not at all as easy as they thought it would be. I really liked both Ben and Jamie but sometimes they both frustrated me and did things that I was "no what are you doing!" and I loved that as they are as flawed as real life and you just hope that they can see there way through things as they really are meant to be together. This was a great read and I liked how I didn't have to have read the other books in the series, however it did make me want to read them now!

Ben has moved to Masonvile, with his two daughters, Bella and Sophie, to be nearer family. He's concerned that his wife's parents are going to take the girls away from him. She died several months ago in a car accident.
Jamie lives next door to Ben, she's a veterinarian and has two dogs, a bird and a fish!
They meet while they are looking for the girls and the dogs.
Ben has had a difficult upbringing, he doesn't know much about love, apart from what his grandparents taught him. Jamie had a difficult marriage and divorce.
Can these two work out their differences?

An emotional read from Jana.

I enjoyed this love story between Jamie and Ben who faced a number of challenges with Ben's daughters and surrounding family. Ben is worried about losing custody of his two daughters to their grandparents and does anything possible to not make that happen. Jamie is looking for love in Ben, which ultimately goes sour when she breaks his trust. I couldn't put this book down, and liked Jamie's honesty, and love for her two stepdaughters. I didn't particularly like Ben as a character and found him to be a little inauthentic. However, the story does show a good character arc for both Ben and Jamie, and ultimately has a happy ending. Well worth the read!

Unexpected is a feel good heart, warming story about everyday people. No millionaires here. If you are wanting a good read about realistic blended families. It has a few ups and downs. At times I wanted to knock some sense into Ben. Jamie has a heart of gold. Not sure I would have been as forgiving.. All off the series is well worth the time to read. And it is not necessary to read the previous books in the series to understand the characters. But I really enjoyed the series. No cliff hanger here.

It’s not that this story isn’t interesting. It is.

Ben and Jamie’s story is well written and I can see that the author knows her way around adiction, childhood abuse and neglect as well as dysfunctional family issues.

But even if I apreciated the writing and the story it also made me sad and downhearted to read it.

In a way I guess that means that it’s really good, but it wasn’t a book for me, at least not right now.

The story of Ben and his fears and what he wants to overcome is very interesting. And then his sudden turnaround with his neighbor Jamie is an interesting twist. This story is rather interesting with its twists and turns but I don't see that it not life-like because I am quite sure a lot of families go through these struggles. It is interesting how things are resolved through cooperation and love and taking chances. It is a great book and I look forward to seeing more from the town of Masonville.

I've read several books written by Jana Richards; she is becoming one of my favorite authors. I can’t wait to read more of her books.

This is the third book in the Masonville Series; it is a stand-alone book. The story is about Ben & Jamie; his wife dies and her parents sue for custody of her children; his step-children. Jamie lives next door; they come up with a plan to get married to show that the girls have a stable loving home.

Thank you Voracious Readers for a copy of this book! This is truly such an amazing book. It took me 2 days to read only because I stopped to eat and sleep. The author did a great job capturing the entire story and didn’t rush into anything. The book kept a great pace throughout and did a great job with all the side characters as well. This book was so well written and such a fantastic story. I will be reading more by the author, especially all the other books in this series.

Love is complicated, especially when the relationship starts on a bit of a fib! These two get married for the sake of the children but soon fall in love with each other. Can they survive through several twists and misunderstandings and come out intact? Their love is strong, but so is their stubbornness! A good story of how you can love children that are not part of your own dna and want to continue raising them in the face of losing the woman you love and get parents wanting custody of the girls you vowed to love as well as their mother. I volunteered to read this book for my honest opinion

A beautiful story of a single Widowed Dad. All Ben wants is to keep his children. Perhaps a plan with Jamie, his next door neighbour. You can’t help but feel the struggles he has to go through. Loved it
