Ralph Macchio is an American comic book editor and writer, who has held many positions at Marvel Comics, including executive editor. Macchio is commonly associated with Daredevil, the Spider-Man line of comics and the popular Ultimate Marvel line. In Macchio's words, he "made probably the longest run on Daredevil of anyone."
Macchio is not related to the actor Ralph Macchio, but is nicknamed "Karate Kid" after that actor's famous role.
I wanted to like this. It was just so, so bad. The artwork was unimpressive, but that wasn't my primary problem. This was very much the fault of the writer. All the dialogue was clunky and unrealistic. Every line spoken was tortured and expositional, even defying all logic given the situation.
Morbius feels the need to bemoan his cursed existence on nearly every page. He feels attachment to a little boy, the son of his first victim, and feels the need to confess the murder of the boy's father at a key moment under cover of night. Defying all logic.
Also, the writer doesn't understand the word "vaccine." A vaccine is like a flu shot. It prevents you from catching a virus in the future. Here, the MacGuffin was a "vaccine" that was meant to miraculously cure some sort of ill-defined blood disease. ... That is not how vaccines work. (Nor how blood diseases work.)
The dialogue was just so, so bad. Even for minor side characters. It's not realistic that a nurse will walk into a room, find a dead body, and shout --expositionally-- "That fiend must have killed him!" There was no one else in the room, bitch. Who are you talking to? And what modern woman working as a nurse in a hospital says "fiend"?
It's bad. It's so, so bad. I couldn't even make it past the 4th page, and I skimmed through the rest. This is some of the most terrible writing I've ever seen in a comic. Please do not torture yourself by actually paying for this waste of ink. I can't believe somebody at Marvel even thought this was fit to print.
More than likely, this was created to get people interested in the Morbius movie that is still being delayed. It adds nothing to the character and doesn't really work as an origin recap either. This reads like an isolated issue from the late 70's or early 80's. It's got that, 'woe is me and my darkness' feel to it. Something you'd see in the old Marvel Horror collections. Something with big afros, high collars, and bell bottoms.
I have never read anything with Morbius and I am getting prepped for the movie that is coming out at the end of this month. This was a pretty generic origin story, nothing special. This would not do much to get people excited about the character and his story. I added a star for the retro feel of the art. I'm hoping some of the other books are more interesting.
I love Morbius. This was an ok story. Good for my collection. I like he traditional, simple art, but it’s nothing ground-breaking. This is a good spot for people to try out this character, nothing more.
