This is a really worthwhile story, not just for the recipes (which are great, but too heavy on seafood and cheese, which don’t agree with me) but also for creative solutions, plot, sideplot, fun, insightfulness, attention to detail (with only the slightest americanisms creeping in, both in the cooking and otherwise), etc.

The author clearly has grown from his early stories of 4+ years ago.

The story is mostly Book 1 (and pre-Hogwarts; some elementary school fun and insightfulness exists, including making fun of what american parents consider food, which reminds me of another book which I can’t share here though in which the teenager (having lived outside of western mainstream culture) is brought to McD upon being found (something like washed ashore), disgusted, demanding “real food” and served at a Greek proper restaurant), with the last chapter being a summary of the next six years and an outlook to follow. I don’t normally like endings like that, but it was well enough thought out and, most importantly, followed numerous characters (main and side), which sated the need to read somewhat.

I basically binged the first half of the story in one night, will have to go back and research more of the recipes (though I could have continued living without knowing what comprises a full Welsh breakfast… food in the british isles is weird from a continental PoV). I did make note of some of the cooking instructions, such as the idea of using a fan to cut onions (or goggles, but that won’t work well with me) and would have loved to read more of those, not having a wand to wave…
