Wynn Hendricks is not your average teenager. All she wants is to finish high school, but normal things seem impossible when the monsters under her bed are real...
Unexpectedly, a Demon Lord appears, declaring her soul is his property and throwing her world into utter chaos. Heaven and Hell are at war, with her fragile life caught between them. To regain her freedom, she must conquer the Seven Deadly Sins and prove she has the strength to control her inner demons.
Wynn discovers new forces, new allies, and enemies she never knew existed--including her own human weakness. She refuses to go down without a struggle, and against the powers of darkness, she vows to Fight. Like. HELL.
THE EARTHWALKER TRILOGY is best enjoyed in the following order: Book One: Dealing with the Devil Book Two: The Devil's Due Book Three: Down in Flames
Dealing with the Devil was a blast to read! Wynonna is a kick ass main character who likes to fight her own battles and doesn't take flack from anyone human, demon or fae!! The combination of the classic angel/demon story with loads of other creatures (djinn, mermaids, and satyrs just to name a few) was highly enjoyable my only complaint is that we didn't get to see enough of these minor paranormal characters!
The pacing was near perfect; Wynonna must fight for survival in trials and in between these trials she must attempt to live her life as normally as possible and I never felt like I wasn't getting enough of either story. All the characters normal and paranormal were very easy to get attached to especially Aidan this story's version of Lucifer. He is mysterious, flirty, and handsome and he leaves you wondering throughout the story what his true motives are! The other main male character Caleb was equally swoony!
Wynn unknowingly gets dragged into this life by her mother who is in a coma at the beginning of the story; this makes her question everything she has ever known about her mother. The character development surrounding Wynn and her mother's relationship is deep and gives a beautiful message about family and love! It was one of the most enjoyable aspects of the whole story! (This part of the plot is VERY City of Bones)
The ending came out of nowhere and left me completely shocked! I need book two right now so I know what happens next! There were a few slow moments in the plot and the insta-love is not my favorite but overall I loved this story!!
FINAL THOUGHTS
This book is nothing short of amazing! The plot is thick and exciting the characters are well developed and THAT ENDING was amazing!! Definitely, a must read for ANY Fantasy fan especially The Mortal Instruments!
First of all, look at that blurb, and that cover. Freaking beautiful. I was pulled in from the moment I began this beauty. Ugh, seriously though. That is one hell of a beautiful cover.
Okay, there is another reason why I was pulled in. The moment the author told me this was a modern twist on the story of Rumplestiltskin, oh boy, I was throwing up some "gimmie-please" hands. I'm addicted to fairy-tales (I have an obsession with Once Upon a Time), so I already had a feeling this was going to be something I would enjoy.
In the beginning, I had some Mara Dyer vibes. I'm not sure why, but it might have been something in the atmosphere of the world Jennifer Siddoway created (I love Mara Dyer by the way.)
Jennifer Siddoway's cast of characters are intriguing and engaging. I couldn't help but feel for Wynn. Her poor mom was in an unknown coma, and this mental (albeit attractive) man appears out of nowhere in her room and offers her a way to help save her mom. For a price. If there is one thing I learned from Once Upon a Time it's that Magic Always Comes with a Price. Sorry, Wynn, but agreeing to help this guy wasn't a good idea in the first place. Don't get me wrong, I totally understand her reasoning. If someone offered me a way to save my mom, you damn-well better believe I will take it. Except ... he didn't fully give Wynn a choice.
You need to give this book a read. Trust me, it's a story you won't want to put down. And I've only just mentioned what happened in the first couple chapters, guys. Add this on your list. Now. I haven't even mentioned the other bits of magic, and the necklace that called this guy to Wynn's side.
I received a free copy of this and volunteered to review it. Thank you so much for the opportunity, Jennifer, to read your addicting book! I can't wait to see what happens next. :)
WOW. Alright, So I don't know what I was expecting but I fell in love with this book. It was well thought out and the writing was great, Amazing Visuals. The story line isn't the typical Good vs. Evil, which was great. I'm on the edge of my seat wanting to get my hands on the next book. I strongly suggest picking this book up if you like Paranormal YA type books!
While visiting her comatose Romani mother in hospital, Wynnona (Wynn) Hendricks catches a glimpse of a handsome stranger in the lobby, staring back at her. Back at home, Wynn finds herself face to face with none other than Lucifer himself, who reveals a shocking secret which forces Wynn to question who her mother had truly been, and the color of her tainted soul. After being rescued by Caleb (a celestial guardian), Wynn is forced to stand trial for her life. With angelic Caleb and purely-evil Lucifer cemented into her life, Wynn is destined to fight a terrifying inner-battle of good versus evil within her very soul.
In possibly one of the most intense plot-twists I have ever read, Dealing with the Devil has everything occult fans could possibly desire. Not only has Jennifer Siddoway created a character whose innocent life seemingly careens off-course without any notice, but the level of deception involved in each character interaction is intense. What I loved the most about this book is that it throws the reader into a world which is so phantasmagorical, immersing them into all different realms of both darkness and light. Just as I thought I’d developed a firm grip on the story’s plot lines, each one becomes shrouded in an infinite number of questions, leaving the reader desperate for more and more information, so that they might also come to a logical conclusion. Dealing with the Devil is left open, leaving way for the second installment (which I simply cannot wait to read). It is so rare that I come across an occult tale which leaves me with goosebumps – not of the horrific kind – but Jennifer Siddoway’s first book in the series has done just that. I fully look forward to reading what comes next for Wynn, and recommend Dealing with the Devil to fans of the paranormal genre who do not mind being blind-sided by what jumps out in the shadows of each thrill-filled chapter.
Flawed characters who struggle with temptation, morality, and recognize that good and evil reside in all of us. The fight against their inner demons against all-too-real demonic forces is an uphill battle. Wynn makes mistakes, she fights hard, and is not always successful, that makes her relatable and easy to sympathize with.
The premise is tried and true, but has a special twist. It’s taken a step further than your traditional Heaven vs. Hell trope, adding on a whole world of other paranormal creatures and complexities that blend well in both the para and human worlds.
Aidan is a brilliant take on Lucifer. He’s playful, seductive, and yet, surprisingly helpful. It almost seems like he has a heart buried somewhere deep and dark in his chest. The interactions with Wynn were dangerous, foreboding, and amusing, despite the sense that something terrible would happen. Aidan makes good on horrific threats one second and is sweet the next. You’ll never know if you can trust him. Delightfully complex.
The ending. Epic, in your face, violent and sudden. Seriously brutal. You won’t see it coming and it’s so quick it hits harder. Emotional turmoil extreme. This made me, more than anything else, hunger for the next book.
The deadly sin trials were creative and graphic. You’ll be able to picture everything and they really helped Wynn to grow.
Here’s What I Disliked:
The pace. After the initial meeting with Caleb and Aidan, it’s achingly slow at times. The space between the first few chapters, the trials, and that explosive ending drag and you’ll wonder what actually happened in those pages.
Instalove. Wynn’s attraction to Caleb is automatic and understandable. He’s super cute and a sweetheart. Plus, the way he vouches for her, serious knight in shining armor. After that scene and the verdict (purposely vaguebooking to prevent spoilers), they don’t have much interaction and what interaction they do have (up until almost the end of the book with the roof scene) feels like nostalgia or a flashback. It’s a lot of telling, not enough showing. I didn’t experience and live through Wynn’s character because there wasn’t the opportunity, at least romantically. There was more lead up to a romance with Aidan. On top of that, Wynn makes offhand comments about how close she and Caleb are that almost feel like a lie because their interactions weren’t that memorable, were far apart, and short.
At the circle ruling where Wynn meets all the paranormal entities, it’s a rush of information that suckerpunches. All of these details at once were a little overwhelming. There’s one description after another of each of these people without names and then they come in and have names and it’s hard to keep track. The world building is also jam-packed in this tiny section. It would have functioned a bit better and been less intense if it had been more spaced out.
So as I'm writing this review I'm still trying to deal with the emotions that reading this book has made me feel. I enjoyed it, I really did but my heart is hurting me right now and I have a pile of used tissues sat around me because I haven't had a book make me feel like this in such a long time.
The start of the book was a little slow for me and it took me about till about 20% in to really start connecting with the story and then from there on out, I really connected with it. Wynn isn't your typical heroine, she's meant to be "evil" and I liked that. I've not read anything else with quite this kind of story line before where the main character is fighting for her life from the "good" and the "bad" people and that makes you wonder where exactly she falls on the spectrum of what we view as right and wrong. She makes some unsettling discoveries in her journey and how she deals with those secrets is well played and written by the author, I found myself tearing up many a time throughout the book with what Wynn discovers and has to go through. But, she has supportive people around her which help to bring light to her life and the book and it's these characters which help to keep Wynn on the right side of the moral compass. I feel that what the author is telling us in this book is that there is a very fine line between the good and the bad in us and it's easy sometimes for us to be swayed to the bad, particularly when we don't have love and support around us.
I really did enjoy reading this, I thought the author has crafted the story very well with the different characters around Wynn. I'm looking forward to reading the next book, but I'm going to mentally prepare myself before I start it as this one really has left me feeling an emotional wreck. Five stars from me for a great read.
This book was a ride! I literally read it in one sitting. I couldn't put it down. I had to know what happened next. I really can't believe this is Jennifer's debut novel! She writes beautifully for a new author on the scene.
I loved her dialog between the characters. Usually a first novel is lacking with some writing craft but this author did not disappoint.
I love the kick ass main character Wynn. She is fierce and not putting up with Aiden's crap. Oh Yeah BTW Aiden is the DEVIL! I thought it was refreshing to have Lucifer go by another name. of course he picked it. He does every so often. He comes across as you would think Lucifer would be, smooth cool and playful.
I really loved Caleb and ugh. so shipping him and Wynn! Now I feel like I have to read book 2 to see what happens!
I thought it was really neat having Fae, Angels, and just all kinds of mythical creatures in this book. Blinx! oh he's so adorable. Kinda like a Doby!
Wynn's trials were really cool. I liked how she was doing something and then all of a sudden in a fight with a Demon Lord!
Will defiantly be getting the next one. Like I said. I have to see what happens next!
This this was the first book by Jennifer Siddoway that I have ever read and I am so glad I did. I am a fan of YA but I’m a huge fan of the paranormal Devil vs. Angel with Human. The main character in the book is Wynona (Wynn) after a bad accident that leaves her mom in a coma Aidian the Devil comes and tells her that her soul belongs to him. I love that Aidian’s character is smooth and conniving but you also see that he might have a heart or even a conscious. Loved it! Then you have Caleb the helpful Angel. He helps Wynn go through many trials and THE DEADLY SINS!!! That was almost like watching a movie in my head. The descriptions were amazing and was described very well❤️ I do not want to give to much since my reviews do not have any spoilers since I believe YOU as a Reader need to experience all of it yourself.
This is Book 1 so you will know that there will be a second book and YOU will want to hurry up and read the second book.
Thank you Jennifer for such a great book...especially since I have finished all books by Cassandra Clare and this reminds me of her books.
For a debut novel from an author, this is a fantastic first book. When high school student Wynn has a demon show up in her bedroom, she learns that the world isn’t as black and white as it seemed and she’s not all that she believes either. To be free of the demon, she will have to pass a series of tests, and good thing she’s got support from Caleb, the angel.
I loved the characters – and I even enjoyed Lucifer, or Aidan as he wants to go by in this book – and the author did a good job making him a complex character, at times you liked him and he was amusing, and other times you hated him. I do think that the relationship between Caleb and Wynn needs to develop more, and the pace was off and on, some points it was going well, other times things were too drawn out, but the ending will keep you looking for the next one. As if teenage angst and an unconscious mother weren't enough, poor Wynn learns of a dark secret that starts to turn her into a demon. Add in a best friend who would most certainly rather be her boy friend and the plot just thickens! Let's not forget a certain angel who's responsible to watch over her whom she's totally crushing on. Even the Devil wants to spend time training her making her worst nightmares live. Along the way trust becomes an issue and she'll question everything she's ever thought to be true. There are some heart breaking scenes that will totally have you reaching for tissues. If you crave adventure, tales of embracing yourself or imaginatively rich detailed scenes purchase your copy today!
This is my first read by Jennifer and I have to say I'm hooked. Now be warned if you are looking for a sweet story with all happy ending and the heroine is winning at every turn this is not the book for you. But if you want truth, pain and believability this is all that and more. Wynonna is human and not without faults. She doesn't always make the right choice and she is having an all around rough time but she wants to do better and she wants things to be better and she is willing to fight for that along with her friends just so she can make her own choices. This is a truly believable lead but be ready for your heart to be broken. I know my was. Can't wait for book two.
This is the story of Wynona Hendricks, a teenager whose world is about to be turned upside-down when a Demon appears in her bedroom and tells her that her soul is his property. Wynn has her flaws, but she is a strong person who wants to stay on the right path. She makes mistakes, but she never gives up on herself. This is a story about the struggle between good and evil, and it was nicely written.
I don't read a lot of paranormal romance so I was not sure if I could get into the story. Boy, was I wrong. The story was a rich mix of drama and emotion with some very interesting characters along with an unexpected twist. This is a very good first book from this author.
Ever head the term “Make a deal with the devil”? Well, this book takes that saying to an entirely new level. Wynn is just your average girl. She has a brother and a sister. A mom and a dad. Her best friend is a guy. Oh yeah and a demon owns her soul. No biggie. This book had me hanging from the edge of my seat. You have teen world drama, family drama, and otherworldly crazy drama. I loved this book so much, it made me hate the authors guts! There is a cliffhanger at the end so be prepared! If you like out of this world craziness, make sure to grab this book. You won’t regret it.
What I absolutely loved about this story is the characters. Siddoway's characters are flawed, loveable, snarky and fun. I am not a huge fan of the instant love trope but that's just being extremely picky. The overall story is pretty unique. Fairytale remakes are super popular now but this was not your typical fairytale of choice which I really liked. There's a ton of action and the story moves pretty quickly. I would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys kick ass heroines, fairytale remakes or demons and magic.
This book is beautifully written by this author. This book is great: from the well-rounded characters to the interesting twist-filled, but believable plot I fell for this hook, line, and sinker.
I loved the dialogue and scene-setting in this book. I also found that I really wanted to know what happened next - I read the book in one sitting - all credit to the author, whose style of writing is engaging, fun and balances plot/drama with regular characters extremely well.
I found myself smiling throughout the entire book. Cannot wait to read more
Totally not what I was expecting when I picked up this book! This was such an enjoyable YA paranormal read that drew me in from the first page. Ms. Siddoway does an excellent job of developing an emotional connection between reader and character. I really felt for Wynn and the troubles and decisions she endures in book 1. I loved how well the author portrays that there isn't just good vs. evil but a bit of both in all of us. A very well written, new twist on a fairytale classic. Definitely expect the unexpected when you pick up this book! I can't wait to read the rest of the series!
This was one of those reads you question and by the end, are so invested you can't stop turning the pages. I found the pacing and writing to be underdeveloped at times but the magical world Siddoway created plus her fascinating characters had me so curious that I had to keep reading. I love the mystery and trying to puzzle out the unknown motives of Caleb, Aidan, and several others as well. It was an emotional read with laughter, suspense, friendship, and tears and I look forward to the next book.
I have to admit I did not expect this book to be as amazing as it turned out to be. There were some places where the plot dragged a little, but the fantastical world created by the author and all her well-developed characters ensured that I kept flipping the pages.
What do Caleb and Aidan really want? The book doesn't exactly tell you that till the end. That's one of the reasons you want to keep reading and move onto book 2 in the series as well. This book was an emotional roller coaster complete with tragedy, happiness, family, and friends.
Loved this story! It has such an original storyline that it caught my attention from the beginning g and never let it go. High school senior Wynn had enough to deal with after her accident and her mom's illness when life gets more complicated. When she gets a visit from a strange man she finds out she is not only a demon but the devil owns her soul. There are some great twists and turns in this book I highly recommend it.
Did Not Finish -I made it to 20% before giving up. I couldn't get into the story. I didn't think that the 20% I read, flowed well, and the editing & proof-reading people needed another go at this. The main character, Wynn, did not come across as a likable character for me to want to continue to read. I also didn't comprehend how she could accept what was happening to her without seeming more freaked out at the strange happenings than she did.
A very interesting take on a supernatural world. Wynn has powers she never knew about until the day she met the devil. Caleb comes to her rescue and from there she learns all about who she is and what she has in store for her. The book gets more exciting and interesting as it goes. The beginning took a little long for me to get into the story but it definitely hooked me and I couldn't put it down once until I was done.
Blown away! Had me excited and jumping to tell the characters "what are you thinking !?". Abosultly LOVED THIS BOOK! Off to buy next in series! Why haven't I found this author before??? So in love with this series! Love the characters development and the story line. Had me on the first page. This author mad me laugh and cry with joy and sorrow from the very start!
This is my first Jennifer Siddoway book, and I'm impressed. I love angels and demons, but J Siddoway has put a spin on them that is 'outside the box' and I loved it! Can't wait to read more.
This is the first paranormal book I've read in a very long time that has had the ability to keep me captivated from the very first page to the very last. The author's incredible imagination and astounding ability to create a world that straddles both the human and the 'other' , the vast array of different mystical and magical beings, the heroine and the celestial hero and the expansive, dramatic and exciting plot line, all combine to give the reader a thrilling and exhilarating ride, from demons to angels to fae to unravelling the secrets and tragedies that have befallen Wynn's family, Dealing with the Devil is an astounding piece of writing.
'He scratched his head and laughed nervously, brushing back his hair. "Well, for starters, I wish you wouldn't paint us in black and white like that- I don't exactly have an angelic temperament. You were dealt a crappy hand and I think you deserve a fighting chance. You may technically be a demon, but you're also a teenage girl who's just had a ton of information thrown at her and is probably freaking out and scared. I...thought you coulf use a friend."'
Caleb is a bit of an enigma but one that manages to be incredibly charming, sweet, brave and selfless and who better to capture his attention that assertive, intelligent and courageous Wynn. She is the type of heroine I adore adventuring with. She isn't afraid of tackling the unknown and striving for the truth, she never runs from a fight and above all else she loves her family unconditionally, even when those bonds are severely tested.
Dealing with the Devil is a spectacular whirlwind of supernatural proportions with some remarkable twist and turns and secrets scattered throughout. It manages to extract every emotion known, from the reader. And nothing will quite prepare you for that mind-blowing and heart-shattering ending.
