Caina has the ancient Sword of the Iron King, one of the five relics that could return the necromancer-king to torment mankind once more.
But Caina knows where the Iron King's Dagger is hidden, and if she and Countess Kalthane can steal the weapon from its malevolent keepers, two of the five relics will be unable to harm anyone.
There's just one problem.
The Dagger is hidden in the grim halls of the Iron King's castle.
And sinister guardians lurk in the castle's shadows...
Standing over six feet tall, USA Today bestselling author Jonathan Moeller has the piercing blue eyes of a Conan of Cimmeria, the bronze-colored hair of a Visigothic warrior-king, and the stern visage of a captain of men, none of which are useful in his career as a computer repairman, alas.
He has written the DEMONSOULED series of sword-and-sorcery novels, and continues to write THE GHOSTS sequence about assassin and spy Caina Amalas, the COMPUTER BEGINNER'S GUIDE series of computer books, and numerous other works. His books have sold over one million copies worldwide.
Book 8 of Ghost Night, which is the third series of Cania books, so there are spoilers ahead.
Cania and the rest of her company -- it takes a bit to introduce them all -- gather, having concluded that it's better that they get the Warmaiden and the evil dagger she carries out of the spell that traps her than they get the evil sword to another city.
This involves discovering something in a basement, the dangers of insanity, stealing information from a book, talking to a skull, a lot of fighting, the return of an old foe, and more.
Caina needs to retrieve a dagger so her fiendish half-sister Talmania doesn't get her paws on it and ressurect an ancient evil. She is accompanied by her husband Kylon, half-sister Calvia, half-brother Seb, Ilona (the Bronze Witch), Sophia, a young woman hoping to study at the Towers of Lore, and Morgant, the sardonic artist pledged to bring her back alive. The dagger has been protected by the Warmaiden who in turn has been defended by Strato, the Cataphract. There is time lapse in that the Warmaiden feels as if she has been fighting for several hours, whereas over a thousand years have passed in reality.
To get to the dagger/Warmaiden, Caina and crew must manuever the ever changing and perilous Sigilsoara castle. They encounter new and old deadly challengers to their mission.
Temnuzash v. Iron King (I am having difficulty remembering how they are separate and not the same character. I guess I need to re-read earlier books)
2/23/21 - After reading several other books by a different author I finally got around to re-reading the short story, Ghost Eye, which helped me clarify some of the characters.
Temnuzash is the baddest and most powerful bad guy.
Rasarion Yagar pledges allegiance to Temnuzash in exchange for immortality and becomes the Iron King.
Strato, the Cataphract, is referred to as the Armorer in this book. (I wish characters would stick to one moniker)
I like this one very much. I was even out of breath by the time I was done. So Caina an company have to go in to Sigilsoara. Well Caina has to go twice an then bring the others on the next run. The Iron King Yagers Castle is a maze an if you get lost you will die of thrust or the uglys will get you. Boy do they do alot of running in this one. They fight to get the Sword and Dagger. They just get out of Sigilsoara by a hair along with Nadezhda and her lover Strarts. Now Caina has two of the relics of Yagera an has go get them to Iramis an the Tower of Lor. Before her two crazy aunts get there. A really good read an lots of fun an running to be had.
Each character is unique and adds something to the overall storyline. I enjoy learning how each character grows and weaves into the lives of the other characters. The way the sights and sounds are described in these books, I almost feel like I am right there, joining in their adventures.
Since being dragged magically to Sigilsora the unfinished home of the evil "god" Caina has out fought and outwitted the enemies of the empire. Now she seems to deny the Umbarians two of the riverside of the deceased Ulkaari King Yasarion. Will she again succeed. Read on and find oout
Book 8 was like the others mostly. The characters and plot are well done and have parts that are repetitive and predictable. It was a fun book overall and I look forward to the next book.
Having read books 1 -7 a while ago I felt the need to get back to the series with books 8 and 9. Nice to meet up with some old characters and a couple of new ones.
Very well written adventure, it keeps you guessing what's next. But it took far too long to finish. The final bout was well described and made me sweat.
