What About Contemporary Romance?

As someone who has long been an unpublished romance writer (and published non-fiction writer) as well as someone who helps authors shape their books, I have a great affinity for writing prompt books. Most prompt books I've seen are more general, not focusing on a subgenre of fiction. I think this book all about romance writing is a great idea, and I highly enjoyed the prompts in the book. You can tell that the author has a strong interest in speculative fiction, as she breaks her prompts down by sub-subgenre with a strong emphasis on spec fic ones: paranormal romance, sci-fi romance, romantic suspense, historical romance (which is further broken down into ancient, medieval, time travel, and Highlander), and fantasy romance prompts. In the introductory section, she provides several ways to use these prompts to help your writing, whether you use them and expand the idea into long-form fiction or simply to practice your writing skills. The only deficit is that she left out a huge subgenre of romance: straight-up contemporary. Most romances these days seem to be of this broader contemporary genre, whether small town, billionaire, cowboy, rock star… or other contemporary tropes without a speculative or historical angle. I would have loved to have seen a section just for that. Other than this glaring omission, this is a fun book of romantic writing prompts that any would-be or established romance author would likely enjoy.

This is a great collection of writing prompts that an work for any one writing anything with a romantic undertone. I often work with a group of writers and we like to throw out prompts to get people writing and warmed up before we start anything else and this book will work well for that.

There are different sections of prompts, so depending on the genre that you're writing in, you can easily find where your prompts are in the book and don't have to worry about the prompts given not being in your wheelhouse. Or maybe you want to dabble in another genre and need a jumping off point. This book would work for that as well.

I enjoyed reading through the prompts and look forward to using some of them in the future.

OMG! I love this book. It has helped me so much with a variety of things. Not to mention teaching me now NOT to do a story. I will treasure this for all my future needs and questions that might arise. There is so much helpful information for the beginner that I am. I was shocked that someone would put out something like this to help others. Thank you so much for this book you took the time to put together. For anyone that is stuck or just not know what to do next grab this and check it out. You will not be disappointed.

I found this very interesting. It was helpful with broken down prompts in many genres. It also gave other references to use. I plan to use these ideas to journal creative writing into a more organized manner to help with my pain at night and see if it helps. I would recommend reading this because it breaks things down very nicely.

This book is suggested to be used during those times when writer's block occurs. The prompts are designed to trigger writing ideas which assist in the writing process for romantic sub-genre's including fantasy, sci-fi, paranormal, and historical romance. There is also a section for writers of romantic suspense. This great writing resource can be used for all levels of writers.

This book provides readers with 500 romance writing prompts, helpfully categorized into common romance sub-genres. I was especially interested in the section on romantic suspense, and I really felt inspired by those prompts.

I had been hoping to get more contemporary writing prompts. This book is mostly fantasy, sci-fi, and paranormal which isn't something I've ever found myself writing. Nonetheless, the prompts could possibly be worked to fit a more contemporary setting.
