As someone who has long been an unpublished romance writer (and published non-fiction writer) as well as someone who helps authors shape their books, I have a great affinity for writing prompt books. Most prompt books I've seen are more general, not focusing on a subgenre of fiction. I think this book all about romance writing is a great idea, and I highly enjoyed the prompts in the book. You can tell that the author has a strong interest in speculative fiction, as she breaks her prompts down by sub-subgenre with a strong emphasis on spec fic ones: paranormal romance, sci-fi romance, romantic suspense, historical romance (which is further broken down into ancient, medieval, time travel, and Highlander), and fantasy romance prompts. In the introductory section, she provides several ways to use these prompts to help your writing, whether you use them and expand the idea into long-form fiction or simply to practice your writing skills. The only deficit is that she left out a huge subgenre of romance: straight-up contemporary. Most romances these days seem to be of this broader contemporary genre, whether small town, billionaire, cowboy, rock star… or other contemporary tropes without a speculative or historical angle. I would have loved to have seen a section just for that. Other than this glaring omission, this is a fun book of romantic writing prompts that any would-be or established romance author would likely enjoy.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
This is a great collection of writing prompts that an work for any one writing anything with a romantic undertone. I often work with a group of writers and we like to throw out prompts to get people writing and warmed up before we start anything else and this book will work well for that.
There are different sections of prompts, so depending on the genre that you're writing in, you can easily find where your prompts are in the book and don't have to worry about the prompts given not being in your wheelhouse. Or maybe you want to dabble in another genre and need a jumping off point. This book would work for that as well.
I enjoyed reading through the prompts and look forward to using some of them in the future.

I found this very interesting. It was helpful with broken down prompts in many genres. It also gave other references to use. I plan to use these ideas to journal creative writing into a more organized manner to help with my pain at night and see if it helps. I would recommend reading this because it breaks things down very nicely.

I had been hoping to get more contemporary writing prompts. This book is mostly fantasy, sci-fi, and paranormal which isn't something I've ever found myself writing. Nonetheless, the prompts could possibly be worked to fit a more contemporary setting.
