A duke jilted at the altar...

Lady Samantha Wallace has been in love since childhood with her brother’s best friend, the Duke of Colebourne, but George only sees her as a little sister. She weds a viscount who is George’s opposite, only to find herself trapped in a miserable marriage. When she becomes a widow, she is held against her will and finally escapes, vowing to live life her own way and never be controlled again.

George is jilted at the altar and becomes one of London’s most scandalous rakes, bedding women left and right. After years of being the Duke of Charm, though, George is tired of his meaningless existence and decides he is ready for a change—which includes finding Sam, who is now a widow, and asking her to be his duchess.

Fate brings George and Samantha together at a house party, where their desire for one another ignites in a torrid encounter. Yet Samantha refuses to wed George. Determined to learn Sam’s secrets and make her his, George will do whatever it takes to fight for the woman he’s always loved in secret.

Will Samantha be able to escape the past that still haunts her and find happiness with the Duke of Charm?

Poorly written 2 stars, NOT SAFE and hero is an arsehole or idiot, I can’t decide - spoilers below:

1. Hero and heroine were childhood friends. Heroine had a crush on him that he didn’t reciprocate. She marries someone else and is widowed years later. He was stood up at his wedding and becomes a manwhore.
2. There is no plot progression or development. Hero suddenly decides in two days, that he is tired of being a manwhore and wants to be a one - woman man and wants to propose to the widowed heroine - WHOM HE HASN’T SEEN OR SPOKEN TO IN YEARS.
3. She, of course, had a bad marriage and suffered with her in-laws all the while he was a manwhore bedding and pleasing half the women in town.
4. They meet at a house party and he’s suddenly into her, despite NOT BOTHERING WITH HER FOR YEARS.
4. There’s a sex scene featuring the hero with another woman at the start of the book.
5. Even while he is chasing the heroine, he flirts with other woman and at one point, even looks at another woman and thinks that he would have pursued her if he wasn’t interested in the heroine.
6. When the heroine is kidnapped right before their wedding and doesn’t turn up at the church, his first thought is that she stood him up and he was going to go back to his manwhore ways. HE DIDN’T EVEN WORRY WHY SHE DIDN’T TURN UP. Only when her maid came running to the church did he worry.

After a horrendous marriage in impossible circumstances Samantha is imprisoned and feels forgotten by everyone.
Her brother and his best friend especially.

That friend is George Duke Of Colebourne, Sam has loved him forever but to him she’s a sister.

The two of them are made for each other, I wasn’t sure they would ever get together so much stood between them.
But Alexa solved all their problems, gave them wonderful adventures and a love for the ages .
Excellent writing and enjoyable reading.
Love the book.

Hm, apart from the first chapters they haven’t seen each other for over 30% of the book. He just wakes up and decides he wants to find and marry her and then he just loves her? I feel like we missed all the feelings developing on his part..

Poignant

When Samantha is widowed she is held against her will by her mother-in-law. For two years she is imprisoned in her room. She escapes on her forced wedding day. George is jilted at the alter and becomes a rake of the first order. He is irredeemable and becomes known as The Duke of Charm. When they meet again at a house party sparks fly. Can these two people come to love each other. Alexa Aston writes a fantastic romance. I gave this book a 4.75 rating. Sometimes who you need is right there in front of you. But it would take heartache and a lot of years for George, the Duke of Colleboune and Lady Samantha Wallace to come back together.

Sam had loved George, her brother's best friend for so long. Her only hope was that he would realize she had grown up once he saw her as she came out into society. Unfortunately he still viewed her as a little sister and announced his engagement to another. He was to be jilted.

Once Sam realized she would never have him, she married almost the first man she thought would be suitable. Oh yes, that was a mistake!

Now years later, after George became known as the Duke of Charm due to his many conquests and Sam, having gone through unimaginable treatment, come back together, is there hope?

As usual, Alexa weaves her magic and a story unfolds to win the heart! Cannot wait for The Duke of Disrepute and his story!

What I love about Alexa Aston's stories is that they are always a bit different from the usual genre. She adds that little bit extra that keeps whetting your appetite. I'm really enjoying this series, these Dukes sure know how to make life interesting!! This is George and Samantha's story and wow, what a story it is! What they go through before they reach their HEA is not for the weak of heart.

I felt so sorry for Samantha, having been in love with George since they were children and yet him seeing her only as the little sister of his best friend. When he announces his engagement, she decides to marry and the years that follow are a hell for her. As for George, with his betrothed jilting him at the altar, he turns to debauchery and I didn't like him so much then!! When Samantha comes back to town a widow, George finally realizes his true feelings for her but he has much to prove to her and it might even be too late since she's changed as well.

I was given an ARC of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Sorry, folks, but I found this hero's unapologetic past of boinking hundreds of OW (married, single, any one who'd let him) inexcusable and undesirable, especially since he supposedly had feelings for the heroine for years but did not man up and declare those feelings when he easily could have. He was too afraid of upsetting her brother. That made him a coward, IMO.

She became pathetic to me also when after becoming a widow decided to be his mirror image in regards to men. Agreeing to have smex with him at the house party and telling him to look the other way while she stalked other prey so she could flirt, make advances, hopefully set up some future sexcapades with other guys is just not my idea of romance. The main thing she had going for her was giving up on him in the first place and marrying someone else. Sadly, for her, that became a nightmare when that dude had a milk toast backbone, as well.

The opening scene featuring graphic smex where the hero is xxx-ing the daylights out of a random OW was the first clue this book wasn't going to be my idea of a romance. I should have been the one to turn tail and run then.

Here's hoping others like it. I wish this author continued writing success, especially since I've liked some of her other books. But really? This just felt wrong to me, which was a shame since otherwise I think I would have enjoyed it.

Title: Duke of Charm, Series: Dukes of Distinction (Book 2), Author: Alexa Aston, Pages: 220, stand-alone but part of a series, Not romance safe, OTT manho hero past, heroine wants to become him, not my idea of romance.

Book 1 - Duke of Renown
Book 2 - Duke of Charm
Book 3 - Duke of Disrepute
Book 4 - Duke of Arrogance
Book 5 - Duke of Honor

The first book? I LOVED. This one? Where do I begin?!

****SPOILERS****

I was already upset at the way this book was going. Samantha was supposedly in love with George but then gives up so easily and marries someone else quickly. Mr. Milquetoast. It got worse from there but when I got to the point where her husband died and the wicked mother in law takes her prisoner and it then says "two years later". TWO YEARS she was kept in her room?! And no one in the house did or said anything?! Unbelievable.

And George? He's a gross, complete man-whore who slept his way through town! And we are to believe within 24 hours of him deciding to change his tune and be a better man that he now realizes he's been in love with Samantha forever? I got to where I finally started reading very fast and skimming because Samantha has decided to be loose herself and sleep her way around, yet she falls so quickly in love again with George?! MADDENING.

AND THEN, the ending with the kidnapping and confessions is just unbelievable. I'm actually angry at this book! What a wasted night! The entire thing was CHEESY and just bad. I'm sorry, but I demand so much more from my romance books after reading such great writers (that I will not name here) that I've become accustomed to! Y'all, I need to go take some motrin for this headache the book caused me. Now would be a good time to insert the screaming Kermit meme here!!

AWFUL AND DISSAPPOINTING!!
How can this author go from writing a 5 star book 1 to a 1 star book for book 2? Well lock the heroine of the story Lady Samantha Wallace in her bedroom for 2 years!! Yes 2 whole years. Thats imprisonment. She is locked up by her mother in law the Countess of Rockaway. Samantha at the time of her imprisonment in her bedroom; husband was been murdered the year before. Her mother in law demands she marry her nephew Percy who is now the heir to the Earldom. Percy is 4 years Samantha's junior and still at the university. How Dumb and Ridiculous can this story get? Well I didn't finish so I can't tell you.. This story is Ridiculous!! The hero is just too depraved to even be mentioned.

I returned my copy to kindle Unlimited. I was grateful I didn't buy this story!! Don't waste your time! I will not be reading anymore in this series.

Lady Samantha Wallace has been in love since childhood with her brother Weston’s best friend, George the Duke of Colebourne, but he only sees her as a little sister. Sam is devastated when George announces his engagement so she weds Viscount Haskett who is George’s opposite, only to find herself trapped in a miserable marriage. When she becomes a widow, she is held against her will and finally escapes, vowing to live life her own way and never be controlled again. George & Weston are both jilted and become scandalous rakes, bedding women left and right. After years of being the Duke of Charm, though, George is tired of his meaningless existence and decides he is ready for a change—which includes finding Sam. Fate brings George and Samantha together at the Duke of Windham’s house party, where their desire for one another ignites in a torrid encounter. Yet Samantha refuses to wed George.
This is the second book in the series & whilst it could be read on its own characters do overlap. Once again the author has written a page turning engrossing read, which I devoured. Strong characters of depth & a fast paced story had me reading it in two sittings. I loved George the rake who wanted to settle down & realised who he’s loved all along. I also loved Sam, my heart bled for the way she’d been treated & rejoiced for her strength in running away & her determination to be her own person. The chemistry between the pair sizzled & I loved the road to their HEA. I can't wait for the next book, which will answer what happened to West, although the epilogue of the first book gives a clue! I do have one question though did Peter, the groom, manage to get away?
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

I have found myself utterly smitten by the naughty Dukes in this series!

Reading the series out of order for some reason, but the books and stories flow nicely even so.

This is book 2 in Alexa Aston’s Dukes of Distinction series and somehow I have found myself reading this series completely out of order. Guess what? It’s still an excellent series and as I have proven easily enjoyed, no matter what order you read! 😀

If you have not read any of these books then you are in for a treat! Aston brings sexy and slightly damaged Dukes to their perfect soulmate, which is of course a feisty and strong female who is not afraid to take on a Duke. In this book we are centered around George or the Duke of Charm who is the actual Duke of Colebourne and is looking to make a huge change. In addition we have Lady Samantha Wallace, who is the younger sister of Weston Wallace, the Duke of Treadwell.

The Duke of Colebourne and the Duke of Treadwell have known each other since they were very young boys with George spending more time at Weston’s home than his own. As soon as Weston’s younger sister could walk she would often be found toddling after Weston and George and doing everything they did including riding, hunting, target practice, or even just skipping rocks.

“It was George who had taught her to ride. To shoot. To skim rocks across a pond. Anytime Weston complained about his sister wanting to be with them, George would stick up for her.”

Samantha can’t remember a time when George hasn’t been in her life. In her mind they would always be together. So when George decides to take a bride Samantha hopes he is going to ask for her hand. When he doesn’t - Samantha is shattered.

Soon she finds herself in a loveless marriage with a mother in-law from hell. Away from her family, friends, and far away from George.

George is known as the Duke of Charm, his ability to draw the ladies in with charm is legendary, but his affairs have become stale and meaningless. After being left at the Alter he admits he sowed some very wild oats. He was always respectful of the Ladies and made sure that after their 3 nights together, he always made their required parting as enjoyable and respectful as possible. Now however after watching his friend Andrew meet, fall in love, and marry is soulmate —- George finds he too wants to find his future Duchess. George wants it all, a Duchess he loves and adores, a slew of children which he wants to help raise, and of course a Duchess who wants to spend her nights in his bed. Now he just has to find her.

This is a classic set up of the “brothers best-friend” trope yet it takes some twists and turns. The Duke of Charm realizes the woman he has needed, who he will be truly happy with, might be already gone.

Meanwhile Samantha ends up in a fight for her freedom as nefarious forces try to in prison her into a life unwanted.

The what-if’s will keep you on the tips of your toes while turning the pages as fast as you can! Will the Duke of Charm get his happy ending or is he destined to live in a loveless marriage?

Check out The Duke of Charm and see what trouble these aristocrats get into all in the name of love!

Duke of Charm, by Alexa Aston. This book was a sweet romantic read for me. I enjoyed it Immensely. Let me begin with the author. Alexa, always for me... and this is my opinion, writes wonderful historical romance novels, and “Duke of Charm” is one of many by her.
The writer’s details I think are explained well with good details. It’s almost las though the details are a food source for the readers imagination. Allowing the reader to visualize a romantic world that carries the reader away for a few hours. I did get lost in the story myself. I truly loved reading George and Samantha’s long love affair.
The book has charm, some witty moments. I enjoyed the entertainment, as well as the dramatic action scenes. Some scenes had me holding my breath, and a little afraid of what would happen next for Samantha. I have to say that their were a few people that had it it out for this lady. While Samantha questioned where her brother, Weston was, I wanted to know too. George the dear family friend, stayed by Samantha’s side. He didn’t waiver not once. I loved reading his character. George’s character is portrayed as a strong, dominant and confident Duke. He exudes power with his presence and just by speaking as a true gentleman.
His love for Samantha and Weston who he calls a brother, I found very endearing. His pursuit of Samantha was heartwarming and filled with a heated need took my breath away. Samantha, I had some hiccups about her, but as I continued to read the book, her character grew into a woman with strong ambitions. This love story has daft mother-in-laws, psychotic family members, dear friends you can count on and a charming Duke that can steal ones heart. All while the craziness is happening from jilted betrothed’s at the alter to a shoot out in a church. Ladies being locked away for years and secret kisses in the garden. With this happening around them, George and Samantha find ways to come together. They teach one another the many different pleasures that can be a very irresistible aphrodisiac that they can share together. Samantha turned outs to be a very eager student when it came to these moments. My fellow readers I recommend this book.
Until next... read on!

Very sweet, romantic story!

Samantha loves her brother's best friend, but can't summon the courage to tell him. George thinks of her as just a little sister, and he's determined to marry a woman who will fill the role without becoming emotionally involved. Since he's never seen a healthy, loving marriage he has no idea that one is even an option. Fast forward a few years, and he's been jilted at the altar while Sam has married a "nice young man" whose recent murder leaves her trapped by his horrible family.

Samantha and George run into each other right after she makes her escape, and seeing Sam again convinces George that it's time to hang up his charming, bed-hopping lifestyle and settle down with the woman he should have chosen all along. For her part, however, Samantha is determined to never again find herself at the mercy of any man, especially in the confines of marriage.

I loved how the Duke of Charm learns that his charm isn't going to work when it matters most. I could really sympathize with Sam's determination, and applauded her me-first approach to securing her future.

These two have a somewhat predictable courtship, significantly shortened by their long history (he's known her since she was born) and undeniable emotional connection. They do have one final showdown with her past to contend with before everything can be set to rights. Not only do they get a victorious HEA, but a many-years-later epilogue as well.

Most frustrating was her brother, Weston, who comes across as a truly insensitive cad, which only whets my appetite for his story. Phoebe and Andrew are also on board (from the earlier book) and it was such a joy to visit with these familiar friends. I highly recommend this story if you like a lot of sweet with your steamy romances. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Some of these stories have quite dark elements to them. I think there should have been more punishment for the way the villain treated the heroine's maid, Lucy, but I suppose it was typical of the time George, the hero realises that he should have proposed to his best friends sister., Samantha. The heroine is a widow who has been badly treated by her in-laws and at long last realises that she wants some fun. The house party means that she gets to have passionate time with George. These scenes are well written and I enjoyed this book and would recommend it.

After surviving the trauma surrounding her husband being murdered, Samantha is determined to return to her families home. Jaded by marriage, she's refuses to marry again. Will reuniting with her childhood friend change her mind?

I really enjoyed this book. Well written and everything you expect out of a spicy historical romance.

My only gripe, and this is pretty little, is that there's no further mention of the brother. Not even in the epiloge. I understand that he's probably getting his own book. But still.😅

Just, ugh. Samantha jumps into a marriage with some random guy because the other guy she loves is marrying someone else. But then her husband is shitty and he mother in law is horrible. So then the husband gets murdered (anyone with half a brain knows it's the cousin who murdered him) and mother in law locks Samantha in her room for literally two years until she agrees to marry the cousin. Then useless Samantha runs away finally. So then the guy she loves decides that he's changed but she's so over being married that she's going to jump into every random guy's bed just to prove that she's free? Like, her first lesson in bad choices didn't teach her much I guess. But the guy is just dying for her and he can't get over how much he loves her, despite pretty much fucking everything that moves and not thinking about Samantha in the past four YEARS. But that's fine because all of takes is two nights of screwing him to set her right back into marrying the man she's always loved. But then SURPRISE (not really), the cousin shows up and confesses that he's a murderer twice over now and that he's always wanted her instead. He's going to kill the man she loves unless she agrees to marry him. Useless Samantha agrees. This book is a damn train wreck and every character in it useless.

I am loving this latest series from Alexa Aston! The characters are all great and the love stories familiar but at the same time unique. Sam's mother-in-law may have been a little too awful to be completely believable but her overcoming a truly terrible 3 years gave you a good idea of how mentally strong she was. And George's reason for hooking up with just about every eligible woman in London was more developed than what you often get in these types of stories. At first you think that it's just bruised pride at being jilted, but it is later made known that it was a desperate attempt to make sure no one thought he was lacking in some way and that's why he was left at the altar.

There were so many times in this story when you wanted to smack George upside the head though. I swear every time someone told him to go slowly with Sam and not push her he immediately went and did something that anyone could have told him was pushing her. And I was very mad at him when his first reaction to Sam not showing up for the wedding was that he was going to go back to his old ways - it was disappointing that his first thought wasn't that something terrible may have happened to her and makes one wonder how "reformed" he really was. Thankfully Lucy showed up to set him straight. It's probably for the best that Sam doesn't know he had lost faith in her so quickly.

One of my favorite relationships in the book was actually between Sam and Lucy. They look out for another and the fact that Lucy refused to abandon Sam speaks strongly to the bond between them. The relationship that I found most disappointing was the one between Sam and her brother. He had better have a good reason for not being there for Sam when she needed him (both during and after her being held hostage by her mother-in-law). The fact that he was willing to run away again when his sister clearly needed him indicates he has a lot to make up for. His future marriage and happiness was hinted at in book 1 and I am looking forward to finding out what exactly is going on with him.

Duke of Charm by Alexa Aston is a cute story in the fairly new Dukes of Distinction series. Two men, friends all of their lives, are left at the altar on the same day, one literally. George and Weston, both dukes. Weston was Lady Samantha's brother and George was the man she had been in love with since childhood. Once George was engaged and the wedding was set, there was nothing for Sam to hope for so she married Viscount Haskell. He was nice enough. She thought they would be happy and so they were for a short while. They left London to live at his family's estate where she discovered her was a totally different man when he was near his mother. She got pregnant and thought she would at least have a child to love, but she miscarried at five months and rarely saw her husband after that. The viscount had gone with his cousin to set him up in Cambridge where he would attend university. Sadly he was murder by robbers and Percy brought him home in a coffin. She changed into black and mourned him for a year, as society dictated. Meanwhile, her brother and George had been as debauched as possible for those years she had spent away. Bedding any willing woman and gambling and drinking everywhere they went. She had only heard rumors. On the last day of her mourning period, she announced to her in-laws that she was leaving, and they announced that she was not and promptly locked her in her room where she was beaten and denied food, among other atrocities. She was to marry the dreaded Percy in two years when he was finished with university. George and Weston continued with the debauchery.

This was an entertaining story with interesting characters and situations. You can always count on Aston for a good read. Sam faced so many obstacles and yet she was able to climb over each one as it was presented. Her maid, Lucy, was a willing partner in her adventures and a loyal as loyal could be. George finally came to his senses and realized that the life he was leading was not the one he wanted and swore to become a better man. Weston had no such revelation. They were both funny characters, and since George was really the nicer of the two, he became known as the Duke of Charm. By the time Sam found him again she had determined that she would never marry again. She would never put herself under the control of another man or in-laws. The chase was fun. The happily-ever-after, more difficult to reach. I recommend it.

I was invited to read a free ARC of Duke of Charm by Dragonblade, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own. #netgalley #dukeofcharm

This book had a few problems for me:

1. The Hero has for years only affairs, hundreds of women, he only takes to bed. Then one day, suddenly he doesn't want this life anymore. There are no reasons given why he changed his mind.

2. Not only does he want a wife all of the sudden, he also wants to marry his childhood friend, who he hasn't seen for years. They didn't speak for years, didn't even write letters. He didn't want her all these years before, but suddenly she is all he ever wanted.

3. The Heroine did suffer for years because of her marriage and vows to never remarry. Instead she wants to take lots of lovers. The same thing she hates about the Hero.

4. After a nightmare she suddenly wants to marry the hero. There are also no reasons given for this change.

I did like the storyline, but I think it could have been better executed.

Swoon worthy

What a beautiful story.. She entered a marriage because her first love thought of her as a nothing but a sister, he is jilted at the altar so he becomes a rake of the ton along side his best friend. But once he sees that, all he is doing is living a meaningless life and he is running from the person who he truly loves... But she was only wants to be lovers after how she learned being hurt and betrayed by her brother her husband and his family..

But he is a charming duke and he helps her see that just because she was trapped once and never loved.. Doesn't mean he can't give her the love the security and so much more that she needs.

The characters are wonderful the storyline is beautiful overall just a great story.. I look forward to Weston's story

Second Chances

Absolutely loved Samantha and George’s story. Sam has loved George for a long time. When he decided he was ready to marry he chose another over Sam. She then decided to find a husband who lived on the other side of England so she would never see George again. She married and several days later George was left at the alter by his fiancé. Devastated and embarrassed he took on a different personal and became the Duke of Charm and stated bedding anyone under 80.
Unfortunately Samantha lived a life of misery especially after she miscarried. Then her husband was murdered and then her mother-in-law kept her prisoner. It took her and her maid 2 yrs to escape.
Once she finally escaped she was able to live her life the way she wanted until she met George again.
A wonderful story with a beautiful ending. Can’t wait to read Westons story!!

Samantha Wallace has loved George Moore as long as she can remember. When he announces he will marry another, she is devastated and chooses another man as her husband. Well, as fate would have it, George is jilted at the altar and joins her brother in a five-year attempt to drown their sorrows in a sea of debauchery. During the same five years, Samantha endured a lonely and miserable marriage, the loss of a baby, and horrible abuse at the hands of her now dead husband. That’s a truly sad tale, but it isn’t the whole story. This is a story of love lost and love found. Circumstances find Samantha and George at the house party hosted by Alexander and Phoebe, The Duke and Duchess of Windham. George has grown tired of being the Duke of Charm, and decided that turning from Samantha years ago was a mistake. He has discovered that he loves her. Is it too late to make those mistakes right? Can he convince Samantha to marry him when all she wants (she thinks) is to be a merry widow?

This is a complex story with interesting characters who have experienced the unhappier side of life. Disappointment, rejection, regret, debauchery, deceit, abuse, murder(s), kidnapping, rescue, redemption, forgiveness, and a marvelous happily ever after; it’s all in here and it makes a fantastic story. George and Samantha belong together. Their HEA make take a lot of work, but it is within reach. The house party is the perfect setting. The friends, old and new, are fun, and just what Samantha and George need. There is one (maybe two) insane villain. An emotional rollercoaster, this one is a fine addition to the Dukes of Distinction and a must read.

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. My review is voluntary.

We first met the Duke of Colebourne in The Duke of Renown and he struck a spark with me then. Known as the Duke of Charm, his ability to draw the ladies in with charm is legendary, but his affairs have become stale and meaningless. When his best friend the Duke of Treadwell puts his life in danger, George has no recourse other than to get him out of London. On the way to the Duke of Windham's house party, George tells Weston that he is finished with his dissolute lifestyle and is looking not only to change his ways but to get married. He also tells Weston that he plans on asking his sister Samantha for her hand, as she has become a widow and is free. George does not take into account the fact that Samatha has had a miserable marriage and when the mourning period after her husband's death is up, she is ill-treated and imprisoned in her own room. Finding Samantha at the house party seems a bonus at first until George starts to realise that Samantha is hurting and deeply wounded, and courting her is not going to be an easy task, especially as she is mistrustful of his reputation. This novel is well written and although lighthearted on the surface, the underlying trauma suffered by both Samantha and George at the hands of others, influences their reactions. I found it difficult to put this book down once I started reading it. I was completely drawn into the plot and found it difficult to close the book when I came to the end. I loved the main characters, Samantha's strength of character and her ability to prepare for her escape, and George's gentleness with her, especially once he realises that she needs a gentle approach. I received a copy of this romance through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Lady Samantha "Sam" Wallace has been in love with George, Duke of Colebourne forever. He is her brothers best friend and Sam used to follow them everywhere. When she has her "Coming Out" debut, George ignores her. Then he decides to ask someone else to marry him and breaks Samantha's heart. They then embark upon disasterous relationships that result in him becoming the "Duke of Charm" to erase being left at the altar. Sam marries the wrong man and suffers loneliness, a miscarriage, and being locked up for two years by her mother-in-law. Alexa always has great drama for her characters and this book was very entertaining. Samantha's escape was cool and ending up at a house party where she reconnects with George. Can't wait the read book 3 about Sam's brother's adventure.

Charm

This is another awesome book by Alexa that I thoroughly enjoyed. Samantha really endured hardship at her mother in laws hands, but I was glad that her and George got their happy ever after. The characters are well developed and engaging. I look forward to reading the next book.

Lady Samantha Wallace has been in love with George, the Duke of Colebourne and her brother’s best friend since they were all children. In the midst of her first Season, she decides that she will reveal her feelings to George, but before she can do so, George announces his engagement as does her brother. So, Samantha decides to take her future in her own hands and marries a man who she believes will make her happy even though she does not love him. Yet soon after her marriage, all is in tatters with George’s fiancée leaving him at the altar and her brother deciding not to marry. As a result, the two male friends find themselves leading a life of disrepute whilst Samantha is left in a cold marriage. When her husband dies, she finds herself trapped inside her husband’s home, by his dictatorial mother. When she meets George again, Samantha wonders whether they will ever be the same again.
This is the second book in the series and whilst I thorough enjoyed both books, I found that the Duke of Charm, did have a few flaws that I couldn’t overlook. George states that he has always loved Samantha and tried to distance himself due to his relationship with her brother, but this was not so evident at the start of the book. I did enjoy Sam and George as a couple but found George was a bit exaggerated in his feelings, given his past. I also found the absence of Samantha’s brother, from the 2nd half of the book, difficult to understand given his importance to both Samantha and George. Overall, this was an enjoyable romance with all the necessary ingredients for a historical romance.
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

Samantha Wallace grew up following her brother and his best friend, George, the Duke of Colebourne. At eighteen, in love with George, Samantha's desire is for him to see her grown up and propose marriage. George proposes to someone else. Heartbroken she sets her sights on the first propect she sees and quickly marries him. Once Viscount Haskett takes her to Durham, her life becomes one of despair and a living hell. After Hasketts death, Samantha becomes a prisoner. Escaping to her brother's home, she vows to never marry and let anyone control her life. Diverted in her escape, she joins a neighbor's house party unaware that George and her brother are attending. George is known as the Duke of Charm and her brother the Duke of Disrepute. Both are considered loveable and outlandish rogues bedding various women, betting, drinking, etc. George decides to change his life and Samantha is the one he wants, but she has other ideas. It's pain from the beginning for all three and heartbreaking to read. Some steamy sex and later in the book a little humor. I can't say this was an easy read. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
