Sven Nordqvist (born 30 April 1946) is a Swedish writer and illustrator of children's books. He is best known for his series Pettson and Findus, about an old farmer, Pettson, and his talented cat, Findus.

Nordqvist was born in Helsingborg and grew up in Halmstad, Sweden. He originally wanted to be an illustrator but was rejected by several art schools. Instead he studied architecture at Lund Institute of Technology, and worked for a time there as a lecturer in architecture. At the same time he continued to look for work as an illustrator working on advertisements, posters and picture books. In 1983 he won first prize in a children's book competition and since then has worked exclusively as an author and illustrator of children's books.

He is married and has two grown sons.

During his career, he has been given awards in both Sweden and Germany. His Pettson and Findus books are especially popular in Germany, where the characters are known as Pettersson and Findus. In Danish they are called Peddersen and Findus. In Finnish they are called Pesonen and Viiru. And in English, Festus and Mercury, though English translations of the books exist with the original names kept.

In 2007 he won the literary award Augustpriset in the children's books category, for his book Var är min syster? ("Where is my sister?"). In 1992 he won the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis

A little boy takes his Grandma’s dog for a walk, but it’s not your average stroll! Sven Nordqvist’s detailed illustrations take you on an amazing adventure, this wordless picture book has some amazingly detailed illustrations, it would literally take hours to look at every little detail in each scene!

This book would make a lovely book for a child to look through by themselves before bed. The intricate scenes are absorbing and take you on an amusing journey through castles and knights, strange lands with even stranger creatures, playrooms, cities, workshops, islands, dungeons, blueberry forests, and just about everywhere you can imagine and a few you probably can’t! before a tired boy and dog arrive safely back at Grandma’s house.

This is a humorous adventure, very inventive and in a unique style. There is so much to see, each read brings something new!

Each page shows different fantastical worlds as this puppy and his boy wander through on the way to Grandma's house. On one page the puppy is cavorting with huge insects and splashing through water while on the other pages he's playing hopscotch with monsters or riding a train through a magical mountain. The illustrations are VERY well done and each reading you notice something different. Cute, pretty, and one you'll wanna reread.

Please note this title has no text.

I think this might be the most perfect picture book ever made to match my own sensibilities. I’ve been longing to do picture books for several years now and this just seems to demonstrate the endless possibilities of the wordless picture book. It’s funny, beautiful and an absolute joy

A boy and his dog take a walk through 21 crazy scenarios in this wordless picture book. In some of the spreads, the boy and dog are front and center; in other spreads, they are tiny and harder to locate. A fun book, similar to Where's Waldo-style books, with many tiny details for readers to pore over.

A child takes a dog for a walk, and the child and the dog see all kinds of amazing and interesting things on their walk.

A simple wordless book that children would love to explore and explore and explore.

An Astrid Lindgren award winner, the artfully displayed watercolor, ink, and acrylic illustrations are abundant with minute details that provide the narrative for this wordless picture book. Each turn of the page is like a plethora of wonder as a boy walks his dog through a fairy tale wonderland. There is a magical train ride, a visit to a park with spectacular creatures, and much more. Children in preschool through early elementary school will find this book appealing.

If you're gonna make a wordless picture book, you better be ready to bring it when it come to the illustrations. Sven Nordqvist has done just that. The premise is simple- a boy takes (presumably) grandmother's dog for a walk. The adventure they go on, however, is not simple at all! So many amazing sights to see, landscapes to wander through, buildings to explore, and all with so much detail a reader could get lost in them easily. Each illustration includes the boy and dog, so we have something specific to look for while we're looking at all the other fun stuff. A good time for all!

THE DOG WALK is by popular Swedish illustrator Sven Nordqvist. It is an imaginative wordless book about a child who takes their dog on a walk. The worlds they walk, run and linger through are depicted in intricate spreads full of fantastic creatures and varying landscapes. This is a book for kids with big imaginations who love inventing stories and worlds of their own.

I really love wordless picture books and have two young children that relish them as well. The Dog Walk asks you to follow a boy and a dog as they travel through wildly fantastical realms. The illustrations are dreamy, playful, highly detailed and easy to get lost in. In terms of a "story" this book has less to go on than other wordless picture books we enjoy (like Journey), but the pages are fun to dive in to and playful enough to entice the imagination. There is not really anything that "happens" or an explanation for this world that exists, but the adventure stands on its own.

***Note: I was given a review copy of this book via Publisher's Spotlight. Opinions are my own.

A wordless spread of fantasias, all featuring somewhere a dog taking its owner's grandchild for a walk. I might not be giving the (very detailed) art the credit it deserves, for I saw it all digitally and the real thing in my hand might impress me more, but I do have my doubts – I cannot remember seeing anything this wilfully individualistic when I was a young book reader, and I am not sure I would have relished the provide-your-own-explanation-for-what-you're-seeing aspect of things.

THE DOG WALK is an intriguing picture book that tells a whimsical story without words. The book features many detailed and intricate designs without any text. The book begins with a child and dog going out for a walk. They travel through many strange places before eventually returning home.

What I loved: This is a book where children can get creative with crafting their own stories and imagining what is happening in each scene. There is much going on in each illustration, and the details will leave something new to be discovered with each read. Finding the child and dog on each page is only the start of a larger adventure.

What left me wanting more: Some of the images may be better for older children. I would also have preferred not to have smoking in the book (there is a character smoking a cigar), but this is a small thing. The story is not totally clear, but there is also appeal in making up something new.

Final verdict: THE DOG WALK is a whimsical, wordless picture book that will appeal to young imaginations.

Follow a young boy in a red cap as he takes his Grandmother's big white dog for a jam-packed adventurous walk in this wordless fanciful Wimmelbook. Pulled along by the dog, the two ride a train to places where there are tree houses piled one on top of the other, people from different time periods, people and animals of exaggerated size (both large and small), and all kinds of animated objects, among other imaginative things. Boy and dog climb mountains, cross tropical seas, explore toy and antique shops, visit overgrown villages and castles surrounded by moats, and a town where only cats live. The sights the boy and dog see are wildly imaginative, at times fun, at other times rather dark. And just like that, they return to Grandmother's house at the end of their adventure. I was a little hesitant about reading this to my young readers, but they loved exploring the pictures and I guess they've watched enough silly things on TV that they had no problems making up stories about the boy and dog on each page after they found them in all the chaos, all of them brilliantly illustrated using watercolor, acrylic, and ink.

This picture book has BEAUTIFUL illustrations! I am so thankful I chose this book out of the education library selection. There are no words and the illustrations are done by Sven Nordqvist who is very talented. A dog and a dog walker are shown going on a walk. On each page, they enter a new region of the world that is beautifully illustrated. You could spend several minutes examining the very detailed art on each page. The dog and dog walker are also drawn very small on the page, so it's also fun to try and find the pair, almost like "Where's Waldo". I would recommend this book to a student who pays attention to detail, or to one that needs to relax/calm down and something detailed to focus on. As a teacher, I would show my class a page of this each day to see where the dog walker is going. Students could then predict where the dog might be tomorrow or what they will see/experience. Overall, I am glad I could see these illustrations.

A little boy takes his Grandma's dog for a walk. But this isn't just a normal little walk around the block. This walk takes the boy and canine through a fantastical world.

This was incredibly imaginative with all sorts of settings and modes of transportation and peoples and creatures to meet along the way. I can't imagine how long it took the illustrator to do all those intricately detailed page spreads! There isn't a word in the book, which made the translation from Swedish to English very easy on the publisher. You could easily turn this book into a seek and find activity with so much to look at on each page, play I Spy with little readers with this. It would also be fun to write a story to go with the pages if you are looking for writing ideas for a class or child.

At first I thought it was about as pointless as a Where's Waldo. Then I quickly realized how surreal it is. And then I finally figured out the point - it's a sideways look at one of my favorite themes! It's about taking another look from a different point of view, adopting an alternate mindset, learning to see that we don't all have the same 'cultural lens' and we need to respect others' perspectives.

And it's funny! Check out the zoo, for example, in which penguins observe an encaged flock of chickens....

Btw, the blurb says 'boy' but of course it's never stated, because wordless. And the child is drawn ambiguously, so draw your own conclusion.

A child takes grandma's dog for a walk. But, this is a very unusual place, because the child boards a train into some wonderful, crazy illustrations with so much to see.

The child and the dog can be searched for in every illustration - sometimes they are there more than once. Lots of paths to follow in one illustration, an amazing zoo in another. A beach, a desert, my favorite was a library, (I think, maybe it was a museum?) I keep going back in to took again. A great book to get lost in.

In this wordless book a child takes an elderly woman's dog for walk. The walk proceeds through extremely detailed scenes with 21 various fantasy settings alluding to jungles, castles, a zoo, a cellar, and more.
The first thing readers will likely do with each page turn is try to find the boy and the dog--sometimes easy, sometimes not. From there, they can go on to enjoy the rest of each amazing spread.
Each page could be studied for several minutes, and studied repeatedly since the illustrations include so many scenes within scenes. The possibilities for writing prompts are endless.

Wow, this was quite the incredible wordless picture book. This is one you can sit with for multiple reads and notice something new every time. A kid takes their dog on a walk, venturing through fantastical scenes. Reminded me a bit of Anno's Journey meets Where's Waldo with how detailed each of the spreads are. Loved the intricacy and playfulness in the illustrations, too. This is very explosive as far as imaginativeness goes.

A boy takes his dog for a walk through the most amazing places. There are no words, but there are plenty of fantastic people and animals of all shapes and sizes to be greeted on the walk. I was entertained by incredible detail on every page. Perhaps my favorite part of the walk was where the dog visited the giant cats. This is a book to be enjoyed many times over as you find something new each time you look at it.

This was like a surreal Where's Waldo where you're not really looking for anything, but you're looking at everything. If that makes sense? I loved it- and would have loved it as a kid. Wordless, but so much to look at on every page that you could spend hours with it and not really "see" everything.

A huge variety of scenery and concepts in this wordless picture book. I liked some of the ideas, and others I didn't. Some reminded me a little too much of Where's Waldo, which I always found a little... I don't know if crude is the word I'm searching for? They just made me feel uncomfortable. But some of the parts I really did like! And that big white dog was beautiful! 😊

Exquisitely detailed illustrations take readers on a whimsical dog walk filled with unexpected adventure. This is a wordless story--done right. The busy, inviting pictures demand to be pored over, and have tons of potential for story starters and classroom writing activities.
